Packers Vs. Falcons: First Impressions

My immediate thoughts on the Packers - Falcons game without benefit of a re-watch.

...

Not much belief out there that the Packers can win this game, but I was feeling a big surprise by the Packers. But that was BEFORE I knew both Cobb and Montgomery are OUT for this game.  Sheesh...
Don jackson impressive in his first carry. keeps legs churning, drives forward and then gets a helpful push from some Packers Offensive linemen.
First two series are how this game needs to go for the Packers. Field goal for the Falcons, touchdown for the Packers.
And the Falcons blow that plan with a deep shot that beats #6 corner, Demetri Goodson.
GERONIMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Seriously, Geronimo did a real nice job finding the hole in the zone and sitting there - made it easy for Rodgers.
On the Trevor Davis TD, that has to be a designed adjustment. If the closest WR sees Rodgers scrambling wide, run to the pylon and Rodgers will put it there...
Don't understand why McCarthy isn't calling timeouts with Atlanta on the Packers five and over a minute left in the half. Why not get the ball back in Rodgers' hands with over a minute left instead of 27 seconds?
McCarthy told sideline reporter at halftime they MUST be able to run the ball in the second half. Um, with the way Rodgers played in the first half, why?
Rodgers takes a drive-ending sack when he had a receiver open on a crossing route right in front of him. Just didn't throw the ball.
Atlanta has some running backs that can manufature some yards when none seem to be available.
Falcons DL giving the Packers OL a tough time. Another Rodgers sack...
When he's not making plays on special teams or blocking downfield, Jeff Janis has lost his usefulness, as far as I'm concerned.
Barclay comes in for an injured TJ Lang, and on his first snap, his man gets past him so fast and easily, the guy falls down from not getting the resistance he expected. Looked pretty funny.
3 minutes left... said all week this would be a "last team to have the ball wins" game. So I hope the Packers get the ball again...
And Ladarius Gunter goes down with a hamstring injury. This is just unreal. But he returns...

Final Thoughts:

Packers' defensive pursuit to the ball is better than it has been in many years.
Anyone want to argue that over the course of a season, roster depth is as important a factor as any other?
The short passing scheme the Packers ran in the second half of the Bears game, got Rodgers' into a rythym and thus his confidence back.
Packers backup WRs getting lots of love today, except for Jeff Janis, who it seems may now at bottom of WR depth chart.
This is not the Davante Adams we've known and mostly not loved.
So we actually saw a two man rush from the Packers on third and six with the Falcons in the Red Zone. And there was still a guy wide open.
Atlanta likely got as much consistent pressure on Rodgers as any team this year.
How Rodgers squeezes those throws in between two defenders at the back of the end zone is just hard to fathom. On his back foot, no less.
Outstanding effort by a team decimated by injuries to MAJOR contributors.
So there's a good chance the Packers' #1 CB next week will have been fifth on the depth cart at beginning of season.
Predicted on CheeseheadRadio that Crosby would kick a game-winning field goal. Alas, he didn't get the chance.

If you told me Jones would have only 3 receptions I would have said pack win... Hard to stack up with that pass offense when so decimated. Great effort

Can we show love for McCarthy? He has had great games plans two weeks in a row with a carousel of players to work with.

Rodgers looked of old... That's good to see

Best game the Packers played this year - Wish we could of pulled it out at end or stopped Atlanta from that last score - Finally using our speed at wide recievers - Great catches by Janis, Davis, Geronimo and last but never least..... Jordy - Only question left is why does MM stick to same old, same old until forced to change and when forced to do it - Comes thru brilliantly!!

Sure, I'll give MM for a great offensive game plan & production with a depleted offense against a craptastic Falcons D if you give head coach MM discredit for allowing his Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers to allow the Falcons to slowly, slowly move the field down the field instead of coming after Ryan on the final drive.

Way to take the ball out of ARod's hands.

You realize that blitzing puts a lot of guys on an island in the depleted secondary right? Armchair coaches are always smarter when they have the benefit of hindsight... Just curious who are you blitzing?

You realize that if the Packers gambled, it backfired, and the Falcons had scored quickly, then the Packers would have gotten the ball back with a QB who was red hot and needed only a point to win, right?

Just curious, were you counting on Goodson or Hawkins to come up with the big play on D?

Apologist fans are always there to backup Capers no matter what the outcome.

I said after the go ahead TD that we should have blitzed Ryan. Either two things happen: (1) we stop them on downs or (2) they score quickly and give us more time to set up a field goal.

The question ultimately is who do you want on the field in the end. Rodgers who orchestrated an 8:30 min drive? Or an anemic defense riddled with injuries vs a potent offense bleeding the clock dry?

I'm not conceded enough to say it would have changed the outcome of the game, but certainly a viable option.

Rather blitz and get burned in 15 seconds than get carved up with no time left. MM sholud have called TO with 1 min left in game.

The Packer where without their 3 best CBs and best pass rusher. And they held the best WR in football to 3 catches. So I think Capers did a pretty decent job.

Julio Jones got hurt and Dom's D gave up 33 points.

Is the bar so low, that giving up 33 points is seen as a PRETTY DECENT JOB?

Julio Jones was hurt at the end of the first half. Until than he had 3 catches for 33 yards. Healthy, not injured. He played injured through 2nd half and have 0 catches and, of course, 0 yards!

After hurting his knee/ankle, Jones was little more than a decoy. Did nothing. Atlanta did what I thought they couldn't do, and that's win with its second and third options carrying the load.

And to do it with out 2 of the offenses most dangerous weapons. Very impressive!

Have to get healthy!

RC, we can say without 4 most dangerous weapons of the offense - Randall Cobb, Ty Montgomery, Eddie Lacy, Jared Cook!

I was proud after the game. I'm sad Packers did not win, but feeling was as Packers won. I think late November and December football will be something we will be proud of.

Go, Pack, Go!

Honestly. If the team starts getting healthy late in the year, this team will be completely different.

Our offense played well enough to win. Defense failed to stop Falcons even though Julio Jones was a non-factor. A great effort by a team with too many injuries on both sides of the ball. Trevor Davis and Geronimo look like they can develop into good contributors. We need to get our players back. Thanks, Since '61

When we scored our last TD, I thought we left them too much time. Sure enough.

The irony is our defense in the end played just good enough to lose. Neither stopped ATL nor gave AR enough time to work a drive in the end. The perfect poison.

But there's an element of truth to the notion. Who would you rather have on the field deciding the game in the end? Ryan or Rodgers?

Rodgers played his best game in 15 games, but because of him it was NOT good enough to win. When the Packers needed 3 yards for a first down with a timeout and still time on the clock, why make long throws? Makes no sense but he does it all the time.

Normally I agree with your premise about long throws when a first down can be had, but in this case, they needed yards and fast. Didn't have a problem with it in this situation.

There were other drive killing miscues in the third. Geronimo dropped a pass that would have made for a short 3rd down. O line miscommunication that allowed the NT a clear path to Rodgers.

Those cost us the lead. Can't do that against this ATL offense with a banged up secondary.

Way to many injuries to overcome.

If the Packers meet the Falcons again this will be a completely different team.

That being said the Packers offense played really good considering they were without 2 of their top offensive weapons.

Hopefully Montgomery's illness isnt a long term thing.

"Way too many injuries to overcome. "

My thoughts exactly. It's why this game stings, but doesn't hurt.

With that being said, I was expecting our Defense to make at least one big stop towards that last scoring drive. Gunter had a chance. HHCD had a chance. We have to start coming up with those coulda, woulda, shoulda plays. They always bite us in the end.

janis answers the bell like always when given a chance. not a single drop. hold on to the td after a hard hit.
geronimo was the red zone help we thought he would be and davis was not bad either. even adams was decent, get targeted a lot. not on the same page with ar on the last play.

@RC

I have no idea. I know he isn't facing the opposing team's Top 4 (maybe even 5) cover guys, so him not consistently beating anyone lower than that is puzzling. Undisclosed injury? His confidence is shot? I don't know. The only threat to him at the TE position is currently injured and he's still not getting passes thrown his way.

Crazy Theorist Dre again:

They're holding him off until later in the season. It happened with Ty. It happened with Aaron Rodgers. It will happen again with R. Rodgers. Lol, I must admit, I have little confidence in this one coming true though.

He was helping on Julio Jones whole game. When Julio is out, he was brought to the line of scrimmage to help run D. On that long TD over Goodson, he was almost on the spot, running from the side (helping against JJ) to the center of the field. He was one step short. Do not lie. You were not watching Ha-Ha. If you were watching Ha-Ha you'll notice that Julio Joines was no factor in the game. Thanks to Gunter and Ha-Ha. There is some players I do not like much, but I am not trying to convince others that they sucks, just because I do not like them. Ha-Ha is one of the best safeties in NFL...

I made a similar point on the live blog: this reminds me of the 2010 loss to the Patriots, in New England, that Matt Flynn almost pulled out (you know, the one with the Dan Connolly kick off return for about 70 yards). I know they say there is no such thing as a moral victory but that was one back and 2010. It remains to be seen if this has a similar springboard effect.

If MM gave to Falcons what you are now asking for, and that fails, you will be here screaming against MM. You are pathetic. In the first half they hed 27 sec and score FG before the half. At the end of the game they had 31 sec and they achieve 1 first down and 4 incomplete passes. If Aaron had 2:00 minutes and 4 consecutive incoplete passes in one series how would Packers won? They will give the ball to Falcons again. So, do not write nonsense...

Given all the injuries, the Packers played a great game. But after playing with so much energy in the 1st half, why did they come out so flat in the 2nd half?

This isn't the first time this has happened. After scoring 24 points in the 1st half, they score 0 points in the 3rd quarter and only 8 points in the 4th quarter. If they had played this game with as much energy in the 2nd half as they did in the 1st half, they would have won this game going away.

After I heard the report that McCarthy wants to establish the run game more and I started seeing more Perillo and Rodgers in the game the first thing I thought about was, a couple of years ago Johnny Manziel has a really good first half. His best game as a pro, and when the reporter talked to their head coach at the end of half and was asking about Johnny's game the head coach says, Johnny needs to stay in the Pocket... WTF???

McCarthy often says one thing and then does another. My commentary was more about why he felt at halftime that running the ball more would be the key to winning this particular game when Rodgers was playing so well and all signs pointed to a barnburner where many points would be needed to win.

I get it. My personal opinion, though, is that I should never give any attention to anything spoken to some ditzy sideline reporter at halftime. It's the quintessential "coach-speak" opportunity. "Ah, we just gotta execute, we need to protect better, make plays, blah blah blah. It's generally meaningless, IMO....

I got blasted in a game thread for suggesting that 6 rushes in the 1st half was inadequate. Got blasted again when I suggested that Atlanta's pass rush was getting ferocious in the 2nd half and we needed to A) snap the ball with more than 1 or 2 seconds on the play clock, and B) put in a halfback sometimes. At least they gave the ball to Rip a few times.

I thought Jackson looked pretty interesting on his first run, and then very little seen of him. Knile Davis needs a good-sized hole. Freeman doesn't.

it depends all on 12, the weapons are there....

Hey Jersey AL, why bash Janis?
He had some good catches including a TD reception.
I would say he did about as well as Jordy.

Janis needs playing time and A Rodgers doesn't even look at his 2nd and 3rd reads most of the time 'cause he's dancing to his own drummer. He's a very good athlete with a weird attitude.

I agree, Janis gets a bad rap but really I've seen all of the starting WR's run routes that AR didn't want run and drop balls they should have caught but Janis seems to get slammed even after a decent game.

Ridiculous. So that means you think Rodgers' throw to Janis in the back of the end zone was not impressive? Again, reading comprehension: I said "Impressive in his first carry." ANY single pass, run, tackle, kick or anything can be impressive or not impressive as a single occurance.

Sorry to disagree. But I was impressed with all the Wrs. today. This is a game the Packers should have won. They were catching everything, including Janis! He may be on the bottom of the depth chart, but he made 3 great catches. If they get rid of him they'll be sorry. Abbey's gone, Get over it people. Allison did something that a lot of WRs from the 2014 class didn't do. He kept moving to an open spot in the end zone. He is a perfect replacement for Abbey. No comments on Adams? I'll give you a couple. When you look at the 3rd quarter it was very obvious A-rod was targeting him. Thats the biggest mistake about this game. I 'LL give Adams the fumble, and he made up for it with a shoe string catch. But He still did not run the right Route to end the game. I said all along keep him within 10 yards of A-rod! Period! He's finally starting to catch. Don't jinx him now by sending him over the middle. The best guys for that are Nelson ,Cobb, and Janis. I'll give Davis 2 years and he'll be the next top WR on this club.

Janis will be gone in a year or two. Abby may never play another game in the NFL. --- Neither WR is an NFL WR. --- Some of you need to check out the "loooong" list of up and coming WRs that never make it in the NFL. --- WRs are a dime a dozen.

The offense seemed to have rhythm and purpose. ARod was very good except for stretches in the third quarter despite playing with an injury-depleted supporting cast. More progress for the offense, but the W was there to be had...

The "get-well Packers offense" against lousy defenses string continues next week when Indy comes to Lambeau. The Colts can move the football and have greasy-quick WR...it's getting close to must-win time. Dropping another home game, against a very beatable AFC opponent, can't happen...

Quick impressions:
Not enough pressure on Ryan (2 sacks? )
HHCD again absent not much help over the top and maybe 3 tackles that looked like he didn't want to make, loved the stop Brice made though! And beat up secondary did good job on J jones.
Davis looked good.
Janis caught everything including a TD
Nice to see Allison make a nice catch on the sideline and a TD.
Good game for AR but again burned a TO in the 2nd half running the play clock down.
Fackrell offside on 3rd and 5 uggg.
R Rodgers a non factor (0 catches? )
MM said at the half they must run the ball in the 2nd half. Question: where did we hear that before? Answer: 2015 NFC Championship game, oh how some things stay the same with MM.
Good game that was theirs to win but GB has yet to beat a good team this season .

Valiant in defeat, but a defeat. Rodgers was exceptional, especially without a viable running game. My main criticism is not to cover Sanu who had been eating up the defense all second half.

The other criticism, one without a solution until the off season is: Richard Rodgers. What a waste of a perfectly good body. He couldn't block a gnat.

One more thing that many hinted but was proven today: the Packers have no RB and will struggle to run the football (I can't believe I'm writing this) until Starks comes back. When your leading non-ARod ball carrier is Ripkowski, there's clearly no faith in Jackson or Davis.

I still see crap tackling, poor angles, and guys taking each other out of plays.
Entertaining game except for the last 3:33. Exciting plays by Davis, Allison, and Janis.

Richard Rodgers is a clunker. Throwing a little pass behind the line to the fullback and then Ripkoski has to turn around and run into a mass of bodies. Loses 3 yards. Stupid play calling.

Sorry, but this is still a woulda, coulda, shoulda 8-8 team. Certainly no Super Bowl contender, and being forced to play marginal 2nd and 3rd stringers almost guarantees it. All Rodgers really wants is to run 'n gun. The defense sucked when it needed to.

This is probably the best I've ever felt after a loss. I wasn't expecting to go down to Atlanta and win, but this team played their hearts out today.

Aside from missing half the team through injuries, Rodgers is looking more like himself and Ladarius Gunter continues to impress. With Rodgers playing like we know how, this team is still dangerous as ever.

The only things that bothered me were the lack of a running game and no turnovers created. Also -- WHY THE HELL DOES DON BARCLAY KEEP GETTING PLAYING TIME?? He came in for one play vs. Minnesota and gave up a sack, he came in for a couple series when Lang needed to get something checked out vs. Dallas and got pummeled, then he comes in again tonight and gets bulldozed.

The good thing is this team has a soft schedule with very winnable games coming up. Unless Minnesota has an epic collapse, second place in the division is the best and most realistic outcome we can expect.

Great game. I mean we lost by one point with half our team not even playing. Never expected RR to play so well especially with most of his weapons missing. That said we need a running game...bad. it's obvious that we need our secondary to heal up (and trade for Haden haha), but we need a freaking run game. Obviously they attacked through the air because of ATL poor secondary but if we are gonna win against a good d I hope we get these new RBs going and fast.

Anybody else think it was dumb to go for two at the end? Either way ATL needs a TD, but if you don't make the 2-pt conversion and then they score a TD, you're kicking a FG to tie at the end, whereas if you kick the PAT, you're kicking to win after they score. Turned out to be a non-issue, but it seems like the wrong choice to me. I'm not sure what we gained by going for it.

Also, I do wish Rodgers hadn't done the belt. It seemed rather premature.

All that said, I'm happy with a lot of this game. I think Rodgers and our O took a big step forward and got some swagger back. That is priceless.

I was wondering also what they were really gaining by going for two. the numbers, as you pointed out, didn't make sense to me.

Biggest takeaway is that Rodgers has his confidence back. I've felt along that's all that was missing...

People like to say that there is no such thing is a good loss, but I don't think that's true. Exhibit A is when we took the Patriots down to the wire with Flynn at the helm in 2010. Several players credited that game with giving them confidence in their ability as a team and ultimately propelling them to the Super Bowl. I would love something like that to happen here, and it doesn't seem totally out of the realm of possibility.

Idiot, I don't think it was a bad idea. With the extra point moved back, kickers are missing more often. I think it may have happened in the London game. I think 6 point lead there is much better than 5.

Oh yea!

On a positive note:

I love when Rip gets a head of steam. No, I'm not a prisoner of the moment -- Rip should be RB #2.

Next season:
Either Lacy, Starks, or another (drafted) RB can be RB1. Rip can be RB2 and as a long as we have Cobb/Montgomery healthy, we can sub them in when Rodgers/coaches decide to speed things up. It's not like we use 3 RBs anyway. Remember Mike Alstott and Peyton Hillis?

I was wondering which Packer team was going to show up. Their best game in my opinion. There are continued issues with MM seemingly throtteling what works. He said he wanted to establish the run and wasted the first 2 series in the 2 nd half and gave the momemtum to Atlanta. That being said Im excited about what I saw..now I know they are capable of competing..this looked like the old Packers we are used to. Defense needs their guys back..played well missing so many pieces but could not hold onto the lead when it mattered. With Jones hobbled Capers and the D let a tight end kill us again. I was wrong thinking AR was slipping.

I don't think running too much in the 2nd half was the problem. I think we didn't run enough, particularly with Rip. 2nd Half play selection:

Drive 6: Inc., Pass/Scramble for 8, Pass 4; Rip Run 12; Inc., Pass 4, Sack -8 Punt. [6 passes, one successful run.]

Drive 7: Pass 7, Run 0, Pass 14, R -1, Pass -2, Sack -8, Punt.

Drive 8: Pass 1, Scramble 11; Pass 11; Scramble 2, Pass 17; Run 5, Run 2, Scramble 13; Inc, Pass 6, Pass 3 - penalty 12 men accepted; Run 6, Run 0, Pass 7 TD. Designed run 2 yards for 2 pt conversion.

Drive 9: Pass 7, Inc, Inc, Inc. Atlanta kneels down to end the game.

Takeaways 2nd half:

A) 31 plays - 26 in shotgun (83.8%); 5 plays in non-shotgun.
B) 7 runs (22.8%) for 24 yards for a 3.43 yd average.
B1) 2 runs by K. Davis/Jackson for -1 yards; Rip 5 for 25 yds
C) Maybe running stopped Drive 7 (put us in a 2nd and 11).
D) Noted increasing ferocity of Atlanta pass rush as 2nd half progressed.
D1) AR 17 of 21 (80.95%) for 170 yds. and 8.10 yds/att FIRST HALF
D2) AR 11 of 17 (64.71%) for 79 yds and a 4.64 yds/att SECOND HALF

Atlanta's adjustments:
E) Atlanta 2nd half adj: ignore the run - Rip can't really hurt us;
E1) Other RBs can't run at all.
E2) Atlanta used 7 DBs and 6 DBs a bit in 2nd half;
E3) Nelson 4 for 94 first half, shut out in 2nd half
E4) Adams 8.0 yds/rec 1st half, 5.57 2nd half [5/40 v. 7/39]

F) 30 plays in 1st half, 24 in shotgun (80%) vs. 83% in 2nd half.
F1) No change in shotgun percentage - # of plays the same too.
G) 1st half: 6 runs, 24 yards (4.0 Ave); 5 for 15 (3.0) by Knile/Jackson.
G1) 20% runs in first half vs. 23% in second half. No change
H) Explosive plays in 1st half: Passes for 58, 21 to Nelson, 22 to Adams, 55 yard punt return; Scramble 23 yards - 5 big plays.
H1) Explosive plays 2nd Half: Zero. [Passes for 17, 14 don't count.]
I) No MM adjustment to Atlanta flooding the secondary with DBs.
I1) Failure to exploit Atlanta's known trouble with shallow crossers. Cobb's absence hurt in this regard. ESPN lists only 6 passes to the middle of the field (I think 2 more were to the middle but ESPN did not list the location - they were TD passes.]

Being at sea, this was one of the few games I have been able to see all year. I must say that things looked improved since the last time I was able to watch our packers (loss to giants). AR looked outstanding and the D held up much better than I expected. I really anticipated another installment of the "Julio Jones Show". I was happy to see that that was not the case. I think there were more positives than negatives in this game. Onward.
