Packers release Danny Etling

The quarterback was on the team's practice squad late in the 2021 season and for the entire 2022 season.

Earlier this afternoon, the Packers announced the release of quarterback Danny Etling

The move leaves rookie 5th round pick Sean Clifford and USFL MVP Alex McGough as the remaining quarterbacks behind starter Jordan Love on the depth chart.

Etling was on Green Bay’s practice squad for the last part of 2021 and spent all of 2022 there. A former seventh-round pick in the 2018 draft, Etling started his career with the Patriots and spent time with the Falcons, Seahawks, Vikings, Broncos, and Jaguars.

Etling's biggest play in a Packers uniform was undoubtedly this 51 yard touchdown run from last preseason.

I'm very surprised to see this. I thought all 3 looked pretty even and thought that meant advantage Etling due to more time with the playbook.

Guess not!

Etling was a 7th round pick 5 years ago. He's already 29 and has been with NINE different NFL teams. McGough probably has a higher ceiling. We'll see.

Yeah, this shouldn't surprise anyone. Etling's ceiling is camp arm. He doesn't have the arm talent to be on a 53 man roster.

Wish him best of luck. Seems like a great guy. Great football career. Not an NFL level talent at QB to see the field on Sundays.

I believe that he and Mcgough were in the same draft class, one pick apart.

I think McGough had passed Etling on the depth chart. McGough is 27, whereas Etling turned 29 in July. Clifford probably will be on the 53, and I hate the notion of keeping 3QBs, so this matters not to me. Bring in Benkert for a different camp arm.

Ii think it is very possible they keep 3 QB'S this season due to the uncertainty at the position. Love is a first time starter and could use a sounding board being a first time starter. We all expect this year to be a down year for the Packers, but remember except for maybe Philly and San Francisco the rest of NFC is not going to be that great. If by some blind luck the team is in the playoff hunt at the end of the season, do you want Sean Clifford starting a game if Love can' t go? Also, remember the NFL made an adjustment to the third quarterback rule, so you don' t for sure how Gutekunst and MLF view the situation.

I don’t know that McGough has surpassed anyone. I think he’s still fighting for a PS spot. I think what happened was a jump by their draft pick. His play took a step Etling’s hasn’t and that was enough to have them decide Clifford will be number 2 to develop as TT/MM did Flynn.

Camp is over, they don’t need a 4th with Love needing snaps. Absent injury, the question remaining is will McGough earn a spot on the PS.

When they brought in McGough, I figured that either he or Etling would get cut soon, because they are similar in some ways. I'm surprised it's Etling because from what I was hearing, he was usually the #2 QB in practice. Maybe they figured he had reached his ceiling, and Sean Clifford is playing well enough to be the backup, so they might as well see what McGough can do.

This could mean that the Packers are looking to sign a vet backup before the season begins. In any case a spot is open for now. Thanks, Since '61

or, it could mean that they released Danny Etling, and that they have the quarterbacks that they're going to roll with. Younger, faster, cheaper.

BINGO! We're on a major youth movement, with no need for an overpriced, washed up QB, WR, DL, take your pick. It may sting for a short stint, but will pay dividends in the long haul. I can't wait to watch this team grow and blossom 🌻❤️
