Packers Question of the day - All-time: Running backs

The Packers have been in a bind at running back ever since Eddie Lacy went down and put on injured reserve.

It's gotten to the point where Ty Montgomery, a wide receiver, had to be converted into a tailback. Thankfully, he has the size and capabilities that your average running back would have. But for questions like these, we don't aim for average.

Which running back in Packers history would you bring to this current team? Preferably one who would fit a balanced gameplan. With Aaron Rodgers at the helm, there may be more dependency to pass. Keep that in consideration.

2003 Ahman Green!

Ahman Green was a beast and that year specifically. His speed, power was second to none.

Excluding the Lombardi era, I would have to say Ahman Green then maybe Dorsey Levens. In all honesty, I can't say that I consider us to have ever been really good in the backfield. While Green was decent, we were always a level back from Emmitt Smith, Eric Dickerson, Walter Peyton, etc.. Even today, Eddie Lacy is second tier and he is by far the best we've had in the last 10 years. To make matters worse, we have never really employed a change of pace back to compliment the north-south guy. Running is not our game - unfortunetly.

Ahmam Green,a back that could take it to the EZ at any time, GB hasn't had that since.

As much as Paul Horning and Jim Taylor were great in their day, I believe only Taylor of the two could/would do well in the Packers system. He would add the attitude that Daniels brings to the defense...he would bring to the offense.
Ahmand Green, could do it all and would be tough to defend. He could catch, had speed and was a great 3rd down back. BUT the guy that would fit in right now and make those safeties fear and loathe the Packers would be John Brockington. With the Oline the Pack has now, my word it would be a delight to watch.
My choice...John Brockington!

Oh yeah, Brockington was a punishing RB. A lot of fun to watch, him and MacArthur Lane imo were one of the best tandems in GB history. Not that they have had many.

Heartily agree! I remember seeing him rip through defenses when I was a kid. He was fun to watch.

Please don't judge me.

Green Bay has a history of great QB play, great DL play and great CB/S play.

Chicago has the RB and LB play on lockdown.

We don't have a HOF back to brag about since the Lombardi days.

I'll take our QB history though. :)

I will take Paul Hornung who could do it all: run, pass, receive and kick both punt and placekick. He's why Vince cried when he let him go to N.O

Since Handsback beat me to the John Brockington punch, I'll go way back before my time and propose...the legendary Johnny Blood. One can only imagine what he'd think of today's helmets and other protective gear, not to mention the player safety rules. That was a different era and brand of football for sure.

I know some have mentioned Paul Hornung but then ruled him out but I would take Hornung in a second because he could run, block like a guard for Rodgers or Lacy, he was a great receiver out of the backfield and best of all he could throw the option pass. Plus Paul was very deceptive runner once he was out into space. Also Paul could place kick, kickoff, and punt. He could even play QB in an emergency. He was the true definition of a football player. As Lombardi said, "Paul was the best back inside the 20 that I have ever seen". Remember that he scored 176 points in a 12 game season. The NFL record for nearly 50 years and only broken in the final game of a 16 game season by L. Tomlinson. I would also consider Eddie Lee Ivery, Dorsey Levens and Ahman Green. And just for good measure let's not forget Elijah Pitts and Travis Williams (The Road Runner) Thanks, Since '61

Herbert "Whisper" Goodman for the All Name team, and Tony Fisher because he was friggin' money in the bank catching passes out of the backfield on 3rd down.

And whenever the weather is bad, gimme the web-footed Edgar Bennett. He had some huge games on sloppy fields.
