Packers play starters for some reason in loss to Lions

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers loss to the Lions.

  • Congrats to Davante Adams on setting the Packers single season receiving yards record.
  • Great to see David Bahktiari back out there.
  • I literally have no idea why Aaron Rodgers played in this game.
  • The Lions certainly emptied the playbook.
  • Nice job by Tipa on the fake punt.
  • How about the wheels on Josiah Deguara?
  • The Packers played a lot of vanilla on defense.
  • None of this meant much.
  • Tough break for Love on both of his interceptions.
  • Mason Crosby must really hate Ford Field.
  • Shout out to Patrick Taylor, who really ran hard and put some nice things on tape.
  • Hell of a year from the Packers, who I predicted would go 13-4.
  • Can't wait to see who they play in the Divisional Round.
  • Go Pack Go.

Settle down, Norm. Throwing idioms around is harmless, even if they sail over the heads of some folks, but not using commas can kill (let's eat grandma vs let's eat, grandma). Might want to ratchet up your game or choose another hill to die on before you point out the log in someone else's eye.

Let's wait until we see if they win a Super Bowl first. Then see if Rodgers is serious about riding off into the sunset or not. Then we will see what is realistic. Because if this group can't win the Super Bowl this year, and if Rodgers and Adams both want top dollar to stay, then what makes us think that they can win a Super Bowl in any year?

Those tricky Lions and all their tricky trickeration! Where the hell was their fake field goal, huh?

Great to see Bakhtiari not just back, but back and winning (per Larry McCarren).

If you weren’t listening to the radio, were you aware Chandon Sullivan was injured?

The Legend of Jordan Love, Lion Killer will have to wait.

I wish Amari Rodgers would quit taking snaps away from himself.

Found it odd the Packers chose this game to finally ride the Dillon Train.

Taylor had some nice runs and has good hands.

Dean “The Bull” Lowry!

What about the cheap shot on Deguara on the pass over the middle?

Let the games begin. Go Pack Go!

My advice would be for Amari to live in Davante's pocket and study his release and route running. Amari is short. I don't see much acceleration going from first gear to second. Second to third is okay but he doesn't seem to have a top gear.

Who knows? Perhaps he is just hesitant which makes him look slower than he is.

I was thinking Cobb’s but I agree. I did say when he was drafted that I thought it would be a huge step up. He wasn’t a receiver in the true sense and didn’t run a true route tree. He was a guy whom they schemed open in space and then let him run. He was very effectively with the ball in hand.

Unfortunately, he looks slower. He’s not mastered routes and catching in traffic, but I thought he’d be better with ball in hand at least. I can only assume he’s hesitant/lacking the confidence to go full out. I have heard that he’s a guy who needs to be comfortable to perform. If so, best let him do so in the off season and move on this year with Cobb and Moore.

His block really helped Deguara on his long TD. He’s had an unfortunate rookie year, but he has stayed on the roster every week. Unlike Myers, who was drafted earlier and missed half the season.

I think that Amari Rodgers is built like an RB and has excellent quickness and speed and will develop into a real threat, but he’s never going to fit that “slot receiver “ mold because that’s not our offense

Packers played like a team with nothing to gain. LIons played like they wanted to win.

Offense was better playing with Nijman-Runyan-Patrick-Newman-Kelly, but I think that's to be expected when Bakhtiari hasn't played all year and Myers hasn't seen the field in 8+ weeks.

MVS seems to be the only casualty.

Packers need to get their heads on straight for divisional round game.

Enjoyed the second half much more than the first half.
Jordan Love on his passes was decisive, quick, accurate. He spread the ball around. He ran the LaFleur offense as it's meant to be run. (If he taunted on his run for a two-point conversion, that was immature, though.)
Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams seemed preoccupied with padding their stats in an embarrassing combination of self-indulgence.
How Rodgers can seriously ask his teammates to sacrifice for the playoffs seems a joke. He began the season with a petty holdout that threatened everything, then ended it with it the focus on his personal glory.
I could be way wrong about all this, and would be glad to be wrong.
I'm sad to think that maybe our top two players are just that shallow.

The offense with Love-Amari-Winfrey scored more points in the second half than the starters scored in the first half.
Jordan Love led an offense that was effective for 17 points; Aaron Rodgers mostly exalted himself and Davante Adams.
Not running Dillon at the goal line for the first touchdown was the symbol of selfishness that derails teams in the playoffs.
It's a reminder of what happened in the playoffs against the Bucs last season with first down at the 8-yard-line. What we got away with today against the Lions may not fly in the playoffs.
A preference for personal accolades is a huge obstacle to team success.

He's 22 and won't turn 23 until next season. I didn't peak at 22 and it's possible that he hasn't either. All reports about this guy , and his long association with the Cobbs, suggest that he's a guy you win with.

He's had a bad rookie season, no doubt. I would argue he's still had a better rookie season than Myers, who was hurt for a big part of the season.. Stokes has been outstanding, and Newman played when he was the best choice and held his own.

Of the WRs taken in the draft AFTER Amari Rodgers, only one is of note: Amon St. Brown. Other than that, none of the receivers taken after him did much this year. Some of the WRs taken AHEAD of him haven't done much much.

This is a good player. We're lucky to have him.

One has to look at Love on a play by play basis. Amari was culpable for one interception. The other was a desperation toss under pressure as time ran down. Rodgers had thrown similar ones.

Love wasn’t perfect by any means, but I see real progress. Remains to be seen if that continues, but I think the Packers will be encouraged. He’s going through reads and making decisions while playing with all back ups. Winfree fumbled, AmRod dropped and knocked it up to boot. Davis dropped a lovely throw. Yet Love kept us in the game with little help from a D full of backups and playing preseason style vanilla. One can’t argue that Detroit we’re not giving it their all against mostly backups.

Taylor, Daffney and Deguara helped themselves. Dillon looked great. I truly hope Moore is active on game days going forward, for STs and receiving depth. EQ just can’t make an impact. AmRod can, but not the good type. Burks and Yiadom should never appear on D.

For the Lions this was the Super Bowl.

For the Packers, this was marking time until something real happens.

I knew the moment Jordan Love didn't go 30 for 30 passing with 5 touchdowns and no interceptions that the 'fans' would come out to crucify him. Shame. The kid has some assets. He needs playing reps.
I agree they should find a QB somewhere to compete next training camp.
Oh, by the way, as the Bears, Lions, and many other teams have shown, the next great QB isn't necessarily in the draft. As I recall Love threw a TD today...some must have forgotten that. He was also working with backups at the receiving and backfield positions. Amari Rodgers is awful both as a receiver and kick returner. THAT pick is likely a bust. Him going out of the endzone at the end of the game is a mistake a Pop Warner kid wouldn't make.

Note that the Lions played their starters throughout the game.

The Lions did the Packers defense a favor by running those trick plays. Those plays show tendencies in the defense that another team would have taken advantage of eventually. By playoff time that will be fixed. The defensive secondary looked off today. I think they should have blitzed more as Goff folds easily under pressure. You could tell Campbell was missing today. Barnes is active but he isn't Campbell.

The backup(?) offensive line--the line that's played the majority of snaps this year--did pretty well.

This could be it for Mason Crosby. To many 'yips' this year.

I thought Love made more pretty good throws than I've previously seen, even if some weren't completed. CW sees real progress and I thought at the least modest improvement. Not too far apart. His stat line could easily have had another TD and one less INT.

I thought Patrick Taylor looked like he belonged in the NFL.

I agree TGR. I meant real as in readily discernible, not as in approaching the finished article.

It was good to see Taylor get some real opportunities and capitalize on them. If we lose a back during a game, he is ready help carry the load. Another player they kept around that is showing us why they had patience.

Nothing can or will be fixed on the Defense. If it's not fixed in the regular season how's it going to get fixed in the playoffs against playoff caliber teams?
this defense will not get off the field in the playoffs just like last year. You are going to see our opponents stacking the box and blitzing just like Tampa Bay did to us last year.
I was hoping all season that it would be different, we would be stronger, but it does not appear to be the case.
Let's hope that Rogers plays out of his mind and/or weather is nasty at LF.

MLF KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT HE'S DOING. You wanted Love, and you got your Loss. Love can't throw deep. Short throws and Runs, don't stretch the defense. But you know better then Rodgers. Where was the Pocket awareness? Thats what we needed to see. None of this meant much? - Then why the Love for a QB, that should never have been drafted by the packers. In a game like this, you look for player smarts. I didn't see that from Amari Rodgers. And how about a RT that wants to let the inside rusher get a faster track to the QB. Plenty went wrong. And for such a talented athletic secondary. They still need better safety play.

Before Love took a meaningful snap, Packers were down 11 points. Packers took the lead with 4:49 to go and the defense puked it up.

If you're telling me that Love lost the game and failed to run the offense against a shitty Detroit team, I think you decided what you were going to write here before the game started.

Was he a revelation? No. Was he shit? No.

Just like "thegreatreynoldo" said in the game thread, "GB QBs have to make two 4th quarter comebacks to win".

Where was Gary and our vaunted pass rush. Goeff had all day to pick us apart other then like two times we got to him. He could read his progressions, step into his throws and make things happen.
This secondary scheme is god awful. Does anyone on the planet have any idea what they are suppose to be doing? It hasnt worked all year. A lot of our games were close. We could have been 8-9 just as easy as everyone else.

Well, for your information (NOT ALTERNATIVE FACTS!):

1 Half Aaron Rodgers lost 13:14. With starters! He scored 2 TD!

2 Half Jordan Love's offense scored 17 points! He moved chains better than No 1 offense with players w/o significant snaps during the season. His best throw was long throw to ESB, who will have the ball right in his armful if he just continued to run and not be fooled by defender who was trying to brake the pass. He has nice throw to the end zone for TD if not Davis had stone hands. Beautifully thrown accurate pass! He scored 2 points conversion by his leg, too. And failed another 2 point conversion, because there was AmR again. like he was there for JL INT.

So, what do you want from the guy who basically did not have more than 1 and half game under his belt in NFL (preseason is not counting - that are vanilla O and D games!). You know for certain he is bust?

For me, he showed promise. A good one. If we will trade Jordan Love, Peyton and Saints will grab him and made him our burier for the many seasons.

And if that happens, you'll be the first to claim that you were telling us how that trade was huge mistake!

We got out of there unscathed, and that's all that matters.

Davante was smart enough to hit the turf before he could take any nasty shots.

Who needs to end the regular season with momentum, anyway? The 2009 Saints lost their final three games and everything turned out fine for them.

That was a really nice outfit Pam Oliver was wearing. The cameras spent an inordinate amount of time trained on her at the end of the half, but since I didn't have volume where I was at, I have no idea why.

Jordan Love didn't get much help from his receivers at times, save for the Deguara romp. Nice block on that play from Patrick.

Game balls to the RBs and H-Bs.

Defense will hopefully be in playoff form when it's time; trickery won't be so easy then. I don't take much away from this game on either side of the ball--we'll be ready when it matters.

As I understand it, Pam Oliver didn't realize the game was still going on and started to ask LaFleur questions on the sidelines. And he started to answer those questions even though the first half had not yet ended.

I gather the etiquette is to wait for a break in the action to ask head coaches questions, usually during the actual intermission between the first and second halves or before or after the game, but not during it.

It was a pretty nice outfit, I suppose.

Do you remember that from football futures. Because that is where I said it. Brett Favre was pretty special. But Rodgers exceeded everyones opinion. As long as your bringing up the past. MM had called plays for Rodgers to roll out. In fairness to LOVE. No plays were designed to cut the field in 1/2, on throwing situations. MLF system may be to hard for Love. Lets not use wishful thinking. Love is in the NFL NOW. He's suppose to have an arm. He must show it off or Gute drafted the wrong QB.

Winfree had an up and down game (mainly down).

Same too for Amari Rodgers - he needs to spend the off season training with Cobb and Adams (I remember Adams not settling the world on fire in his first year, so we’ll see).

Taylor had some nice runs. Good YAC.

The problem isn't next Year. It isn't LOVE. The problem is now. The problem Now is the Defense. Not Rodgers. Not the OL. Not the WRs. This offense is ready to win. It's the Defense that isn't. They needed Campbell back on the field. And as Much as Z. Smith was brought to GB to win it. He's on his butt, sucking the Tit of the trainer for all it's worth. Thats #2. #3 is Alexander. He's the CB who must get on the field. You just don't replace All-pro CBs. Stoke's has learned. But Savage just hasn't been the same since Alexander left. Alexander will fix the secondary. #4 - This Defense will go just as far as Clark can take them. If You think Lowrey was good today. Thats Great. But the truth is this DL is up and down. And to keep winning you must rotate them. Right , Left and bench them if they "fall down" . Special Teams- we can win with them. Just keep Moore and the speedy guys on them.

Dan Campbell is a clown! To be 2-15 and run trick play after trick play . Seriously learn to coach ball not coach cute!
I liked what I saw in Love …big ,fast, strong …sadly he didn’t much help especially on his picks
Amari R starting to look like a wasted pick
Savage has regressed
Quit bagging on ARod and DA for stat hunting. We are where we are because of them!

You guys get it. You (almost) ALWAYS get it.

😎 We got Bakhtiari and Myers back. Does anybody get how much stronger and deeper our line just got?

😀. Love played pretty well right up to the end, protecting the ball, moving the team, and putting points on the board. Without Jones or Adams. I thought it was a good showing, much better than anything Rodgers did in his second season.

🥳I think our RB situation for 2022 is really good.

😀. Lazard is a real good player for us, and it’s a shame that some people can’t/won’t see that.

Winners: Taylor, Deguara, Daffney and, passively, Campbell (Burks just isn’t good or going to be), Moore, Cobb. Losers: AmRod, Burks, Yiadom.

Yes, it was a nice job by Tipa Galeai on that fake punt, though the announcers bizarrely refused to acknowledge his effort. They acted like it was simply a drop of an easy pass, but Galeai made it very tough by getting his arms up in the guy's face. The announcers also couldn't get enough of the fact that the Lions actually tried to win the game, even though most teams in that situation do the same. I don't know who they loved more, Lions coach Dan Campbell or sideline reporter Pam Oliver.

Jordan Love was pretty bad again. The interceptions were mostly not his fault, but he didn't do anything special on the TD to Deguara either. The coaches seem to lack confidence in him, as the passing plays were almost all dinking and dunking, and when he did have some chances to throw the ball downfield, he couldn't get the job done. He doesn't look close to being ready to start. If Rodgers leaves, the Packers need to bring in another QB to compete for the starting job--either a high draft pick or a veteran.

Your not getting a shut down corner at the end of round one Gutty.
Gary went missing in action again today and was handled most of the day. Most defensive ends who are 12 picks play much better then what he is giving.

Mr Nagler insists on downplaying Love's poor play as a way of preparing Packers' fans for the possible departure of AR12 next season. Love is terrible! A bust! His release is slow. He makes poor decisions. As long as he doesn't throw three consecutive interceptions Nagler will continue to say that "nobody knows anything." Well, we have some data to examine at this point and there is little to suggest that Love is a worthy successor to Aaron Rodgers. Should the Pack win the SB, every effort should be made to lock in AR12 and DA.

Futher, Nagler refuses to accept the staggeringly obvious when it comes to Amari Rodgers whose play grows worse with every game. Rodgers made another stupid decision to run out a kick at the end of the game and waste precious seconds for absolutely NO reason. He also made a key drop on an easy pass play. The Packers would be better off cutting Rodgers and replacing him with virtually anyone off their practice roster. But God forbid if anyone dares to criticise the play of Love and the other Rodgers. Every Packers' player is untouchable except for JK Scott.

The game against the Lions was unfortunate as it had zero value to the GBP's. I do not think the players were all that motivated and focused, and the defense played soft/vanilla. There just wasn't that killer instinct!

Watching Bachtiari and Myers come back and get some playing time in was a wonderful tune-up to start integrating them back into the lineup for the playoffs. Lot of work remaining for them to be game day ready!

We ALL know that whoever is coming to play QB after Aaron Rodgers it is going to be a tough pill to swallow with Rodgers being a generational type player. Doesn't matter if it is Jordan Love or some future high QB draft choice. Change almost seems inevitable this offseason unless you want a totally gutted team (shell of itself) just to have ARod back. Personally, I find those rabid & extremely emotional fans of ARod on here who want him back even if it is detrimental to the long-term growth and success of the Packers interesting. I am a fan of the GBP's first and foremost. Players come and players go! While a fan of ARod at the end of the day I only care about the success of the GBP's. If ARod needs to go from a financial perspective and the GBP's are able to get a number of young quality players/draft choices than so be it. For it to be any other way makes zero sense!

The trick plays were nauseating but going to assume some of that was simply the Packers were playing a non-important game (at least the 2nd trick play). Patrick Taylor has been a player I have been anxiously wanting to see and truthfully he reminds me a lot of Dillion with how he looks and plays. Patrick is a starter type RB in the league and on the same level as J. Williams in Detroit. The Packers have the best combination of running backs I have ever seen over the years with Dillon, Jones, Taylor, and the forgotten Kylin Hill who I think has a lot of similarities to Jones. Can't wait to see him back and healthy for year 2.

Unlike some of the emotional Rodger fans on here I have been watching Jordan Love (who it has been well documented he is a very raw QB) grow this year. Last year, was an almost wasted/lost year for Jordan. Unfortunately he gets hurt in pre-season this year when Nijman missed a pass rusher. Then he had covid during the season where he could have played in another game. He unfortunately has missed opportunities that have been out of his control. With that being said, I have been watching Love closely and I am seeing nothing but improvement and growth this year in the limited times he has played. That is what one looks for with a young and raw QB. Have no idea in the long-term how good Love will become but being that he just turned 23-years old 6 weeks ago Jordan Love will be in the NFL for the next 12-18 years. Anyone who does not believe he is going to become a very good QB during his career with an upward trajectory is ridiculous. The guy has lots of talent and the only ones throwing him under the bus are emotional ARod fans who are simply afraid Rodgers will be gone after this season. Whether ARod stays or goes after this season I have no doubt the Packer organization has thought this decision out as well as it can be done. In the perfect situation ARod wins the league MVP this year and helps the GBP win the SB. Then Gutey trades him and Adams (franchise tag) to another team for a plethora of draft choices and young talented players including someone like Drew Lock to compete with Love. The Packers have a lot of very good building blocks already to surround Jordan Love should they want to go that direction. They have a 1st class OL with a lot of young but experienced players to go with Jenkins, Nijman, and Bachtiari. They have possibly the strongest RB group the team has had in 50-years with Jones, Dillion, Taylor, and Hill. They have a very good TE group should they resign Tonyan and with his injury I believe they may be able to do. My guess is the Packers would not only receive at least one young talented WR in a trade for ARod, but they would likely take one or two WRs in either Round 1 thru Round 3 in 2022 with the extra draft choices. Should they do this the Packers are restocked on offense and will be an offensive powerhouse as Jordan grows into his starting QB role. The downside will once again be the defense and trying to restock the talent on that side of the ball. The Pack needs another stud on the DL, and at least one and preferable two OLB's. A lot will hinge on whether the Packers can retain Jaire, Preston, Amos, Campbell, and Douglas. If they can retain those players to go with a few extra draft choices and a young defensive player from another team with any Gutey luck this team might slip into the playoffs in 2022, or in 2023 be a strong contender. For now let's win a SB with Rodgers at the helm but let's restructure the team with either Jordan Love or another QB under center in 2022.
