Packers Periscope: Sunday's Big Win, 55-7 and Taking Over Broadway
In this week's Periscope, we close the book on Malik Willis's impressive backup effort on Sunday, reflect on a Christmas Keister Kicking in 2012 and peek ahead to a Geen & Gold invasion this coming weekend in Nashville.
By Tony_Wilson

Well, that was quite the impressive coaching and execution effort I've seen by the Green Bay Packers in a scenario like that maybe ever. Malik Willis, just a few weeks with the team, looked well-prepared and well-coached in his first career win as a starting quarterback. He wasn't asked to do much, and for good reason. But what he was asked to do, he executed with near perfection in the Packers' 16-10 win over Indy on Sunday.
Defensively, a pretty impressive bounce back, albeit against a significantly less dynamic offense. But three more turnovers that should have been more and thwarting nearly everything Indianapolis tried to do is a positive trend for a group still figuring it out a bit.
But as this is a week-to-week league, the Packers Periscope must be the same. We savored the win, watched the highlights and listened to the podcasts. Now, the page must be turned to a new opponent and a new challenge, this time the Tennessee Titans, live from Broadway in Nashville on Sunday.
So let's head on over to Tootsie's, have a couple pops, listen to some country and raise up the ol' Periscope to look at the past, present and future of the Packers and Titans.
The Past
The Titans (and Houston Oilers, in this case) hold an 8-6 all-time edge, with the first of their 14 match-ups taking place in November of 1972, a 23-10 Packers win at the Astrodome in Houston. Of late, however, it's been a back-and-forth affair with the Titans winning 3 of the last 5, most recently, a 27-17 bludgeoning of the Pack in 2022.
But one of those Packer wins, coming two days before Christmas in 2012, is one of the all-time great Green & Gold beat-downs. The anemic Titans came to Lambeau in the bitter cold facing a Packers team chasing a division title. And boy, did Tennessee catch this Packers team on the wrong day.
Aaron Rodgers opened up the scoring on a 6-yard TD run and followed it up with a 20-yard pass to Randall Cobb to make it 14-0 Packers in a blink. Two Mason Crosby field goals gave the Packers a 20-0 halftime lead, showing a sign of things to come.
The second half, though, is where things really unraveled for Tennessee. After a DuJuan Harris 7-yard touchdown run to open it up in the third, Rodgers hit Greg Jennings for a bunny to make it 34-0. By the way... DuJuan Harris was awesome and will never get his due.
The fourth gave us a James Jones 12-yard touchdown, then two Ryan Grant touchdowns, from 7 and 9 respectively, to put it at a comical 55-0.
Jake Locker finally found Kenny Britt for the ultimate garbage TD to put a bow on this 55-7 Christmas gift.
The Present
We've talked about the Packers and their impressive effort on Sunday. Since then, however, MarShawn Lloyd was added to the IR, meaning he'll be out for four weeks. A real bummer for Lloyd, who just hasn't been able to find his footing yet due to injury.
Speaking of injury, we'll find out shortly whether Jordan Love will practice. Given he's day-to-day per Matt LaFleur himself, it'll be interesting to see how they treat this week. Will they stick to the standard of conservatism and let Malik Willis get his revenge game, or will the Pack's QB1 get back into the lineup?
As for the TItans, they chalked up back-to-back 24-17 losses to start off the year, each with a brutal turnover from quarterback and mayo lover Will Levis. Make no mistake, they have not been good offensively, and now running back Tajae Sharpe is hurt. But on the outside, DeAndre Hopkins and Calvin Ridley are a couple of the best at their position, so the likes of Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes and Carrington Valentine will have to be at their best.
Tennesee has also struggled to protect their struggling young quarterback, allowing 7 sacks in two games, tied for third-most in the league. Green Bay's pass rush hasn't been great as of yet. This may be the week we see them flourish.
In all, the Titans are already desperate and starting off 0-3 is a death sentence for their season. If they have a best effort, the Packers will see it on Sunday.
The Future
Sunday, noon Lombardi Time, Nissan Stadium in Nashville. This is THE destination game for road-traveling Packers fans with a street full of bars, music and partying all within walking distance of the stadium. I'd fully expect this to be a near home game for Green Bay. So much so, I wouldn't be shocked if there's one team operating on a silent count and it ain't the Pack.
So much of this hinges on Love's availability, just like last week. But at least now, if he can't go, Willis has a win under his belt and more confidence in addition to another week of prep. But it sure seems like Love is on the mend, so maybe he'll make his return. And even if he does, the Titans are more than formidable defensively, with the likes of Jeffrey Simmons, T'Vondre Sweat and Harold Landry across the front. While they're struggling, it's mostly their offense. Defensively, they're a strong unit.
I do think, though, the Packers win this game whether Love plays or not. We saw that they're capable of running the ball whenever they want, at will. That'll either relieve some pressure off Willis or open things up for Love if he plays. Getting to 2-1 with a division game on the horizon is pivotal for this team, and a goal I think they can achieve.

I had to look up DuJuan Harris. He's the RB who was a used car salesman for a week before the Packers signed him. He had a nice little run at the end of the 2012 season but suffered a season-ending knee injury in training camp the following year. His NFL career never got back on track after that.

Packers seem to do their best when they are given little chance to win, and won some iconic upsets when they were playing backups at key positions, and sometimes, nearly a whole back up WR corps. Then, they befuddle themselves in a game they should clearly win. So.....who know??? They should win, but who knows? Depends a lot on the coaches. Do they have this bunch ready mentally and physically, and a solid game plan? Do the players know situational football, what do do in key situations? Are they refining and limiting mistakes, penalties. Can the coaches dictate pace, create urgency and establish momentums without the penalties and miscues. I think yes, because MWillis is still a big work in progress....so the coaching staff will have to put in extra effort, contingency preparation, and.....so....the group will be unified to rise to the occasion. 55 - 0 packers. :)

I do not believe Willis has a "revenge game" on his mind. Nor do I believe this will have any consideration whether Love plays or not.
This should be Willis' "thank you game" to the Titans for trading him to the Packers. He's in a good spot for his career long term working with Love, LaFleur, Clements.
I sit on the west side of the bowl in Lambeau and can see the Packers sideline. What was enjoyable to see was Jordan standing on the sideline, welcoming Malik every time he came off the field, escorting him to the bench, and showing him his tablet to review the last series.
Both young men are about the same age. That should be a fun QB room.

Willis know there's no such thing as a good long-term backup in the NFL. If he shows well again, he'll be QBing somewhere in the future. Need I bring up Flynn (sp?)?

This game, as always, will depend on the O-line not who's playing QB. Right behind the O-line is the coaching, rather that the D which is close behind this week. A stellar performance by special teams would be a very helpful thing to set the tone too.
Tony, I thought you'd be bringing up Dillan's rookie season game against these guys, but since he's out I suppose you let it slide for another time.

Please do not send Love out there to play a mediocre team.
Let Matt come up with another creative scheme.
Malik should have just enough confidence to take on the next baby steps

If Love is completely healthy, medically cleared and practicing, there is zero reason to keep him out of this game. Zero. The first 2-3 games of the regular season are most of these starters preseason, he needs those reps with his starters before the schedule gets really hard. Zero reasons.

the Houston oilers have nothing to do with this Tennessee squad. if you move your team AND change the name you're a new franchise. lumping the oilers records with the titans' is just wrong. do you lump together the ravens and their old browns records together?

too soon to say this Packers team can "run the ball whenever they want, at will". didn't run the ball very well for halves of two games now. if Willis starts, the titans' will certainly load the box and force Willis to make plays down field. by all accounts, this defense is much better than the colts'. we'll find out just how capable we are of running the ball at will.

The Titan's D has good numbers so far but look at who they played. The Bears and the Jets. 2 teams with not much offense. I hope MLF works in some play action early to get the Titan's D to bite run and get burned downfield. Get pressure on Levis and he will make mistakes so our D should be ready for some opportunities.
