Packers Daily Links: Rodgers Responds to Favre Comments

Aaron Rodgers deflected attention from Brett Favre's recent comments about the current quarterback. That and more in today's Daily Links...

Following what could be described as former Packer Brett Favre's backhanded comments about Aaron Rodgers, the current Packer quarterback gave his reaction on Wednesday. “You know what? The only thing I want to say, I’m just really proud of our guys and what our team did last season,” Rodgers is quoted as saying by Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “It was a great accomplishment. It took all 53 of those guys. Obviously it got the attention of a lot of people, and we’re proud of the fact that we achieved the ultimate goal as a team.” It was pretty clear Rodgers was not interested in responding to the situation any further.

More on Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre comes from the Wisconsin State Journal, Packer Report, Fox 11, and ESPNMilwaukee.com.

Both Clay Matthews and Greg Jennings commented on Brett Favre as well.

Wide receiver Jordy Nelson answered questions about his newly signed contract extension for the first time on Wednesday too. "He thinks the Packers will be contenders for years to come, and that's more important than going to a less talented team where he might get a few more passes thrown his way," writes Chris Jenkins of the Associated Press.

More on Jordy Nelson's reaction to his new contract is at ESPNMilwaukee.com and JSOnline.

Former Packers executive Andrew Brandt writes a column about Jordy Nelson at the National Football Post.

Tight end Jermichael Finley reportedly met with head coach Mike McCarthy after expressing some disappointment with not getting the ball more often following Sunday's win over the Denver Broncos. "He just told me to keep running my routes hard, that the ball was going to come my way," Finley said. "It's going to come." It's as simple as that. Finley will get his catches so there's no use talking to the media about not getting the ball.

Linebacker Frank Zombo said he was pain-free after practicing yesterday for the first time since training camp. "Though the outside linebacker was limited on Wednesday, he said he took part in every drill," writes Rob Demovsky. "He wore full pads to protect his shoulder, while the rest of the team practiced without pads as has been the case every Wednesday this season." Whether he'll play in this weekend's game against Atlanta is still up in the air.

More on Frank Zombo comes from the Journal Sentinel and JSOnline.

The Packers return to Atlanta on Sunday, site of their playoff victory last year where Aaron Rodgers had a superlative performance. "That one performance against Atlanta in the playoffs - his best as a professional given the burden on his shoulders and the relevance of the game - raised the stakes for Rodgers more than any other, including his MVP showing in Super Bowl XLV," writes Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel.

More on Aaron Rodgers and the re-match with the Falcons comes from Fox Sports, the Press-Gazette, the Associated Press and the Packers official website.

Tackle Bryan Bulaga didn't practice yesterday but he is getting closer. "Packers coach Mike McCarthy said right tackle Bryan Bulaga is champing at the bit to play, but team doctors are being cautious with him," reports Mike Vandermause of the Press-Gazette.

More injury reports come from ESPNMilwaukee.com and JSOnline.

Both Ryan Pickett and Aaron Rodgers expressed disappointment over Johnny Jolly's recent arrest. Rodgers said the NFL deserves some blame.

The challenge of the Packers pass defense against the Falcons air attack is covered by Packer Report (subscription required).

The upcoming Falcons game is previewed in a video at JSOnline.

The Insiders section at JSOnline features pieces on Aaron Rodgers, an undefeated season, offensive production, the 1961 championship team and Vince Lombardi (subs required for all).

ARod is the man's picture

ARod responds the only way he knows how, classy, unselfish, and all about the team. He not only is a far better QB than Brent ever was, he's 100x the person.

Very true.

But I did like how Jennings twisted the knife a bit. "We didn’t go all the way with Brett, but we did with Aaron. I think that kind of speaks for itself.”

I loved Jennings comment on that as well. I think it is just sad that ARod still has to answer questions about a guy who hasn't been here in 3 years. Go Away Brent!

Will having Zombo back, meaning Walden sits out, help the struggling defense?

Man, I am getting so tired hearing about Jermichael Finely griping.

He seriously had to go talk to the coaches about his targets when (1) he admitted to being doubled about 80% of the time, (2) the team scored 49 effing points, and (3) he caught THREE effing touchdowns ONE week before?????? Seriously?

Guy's a phenom, but this stuff gets so old. I really wonder how he is viewed in the locker room (and by McCarthy, who is probably busy enough raising a newborn and running a football team, but has to take time out of day to stroke a grown man's ego).

Forgot to mention - this business about the team needing to get the ball to its "playmaker" adds to it to.

Jennings, Driver, Nelson, Cobb, Starts, etc aren't playmakers?

Maybe I'm just grumpy this morning, but good lord, grow up.

I agree with everything you said. The problem with a guy like Finley is he wants his, and he wants to make sure that he doesn't get short-changed. He's in a contract year. Every game where doesn't get the ball he's going to be AFRAID that the Packers are lowering his market value. He is also probably a guy that won't sign without seeing what his free market value could be, unless the Packers just throw a block-buster deal at him, which is not TT's style. This is a no-win situation. It's Javon Walker all over again. Wake me up when the movie is over, because I think I know how this ends.

Yup. The irony is that he is only hurting himself from a contract situation. Everyone is the league knows what he can do catching balls. He would help himself the most by saying, "You know what, I may have not caught many today because of the D's scheme, but I took some real pride in pass/run blocking and helped the team out there."

If GB lets him walk without an offer, its not going to help his siutation either. He'll still get huge money, but the good teams will realize that he must have been a giant pain in the ass off the field, and he'll wind up on the Bengals.

I'm willing to bet Finley won't be back next year. Too bad, as he's a great football player. I just don't see the Pack investing in him. I kind of hope I'm wrong.

What do you expect from a narcissitic ego-maniac? He's trying to goad Rodgers into a verbal war, and Aaron is too classy to take the bait. The more I hear Brent talk shit the more I wish he'd shut the fuck up and go away once and for all. TT knew what he was doing when he sent Brent packing, as does everybody else now.

What's really special for me? Not having to deal with the 1st series "over-amped" characteristics of Favre. Case in point - vs Denver, 1st series, 1st down - roll-out, throw-away: no one open. 2nd down - screen to Starks, gain of 5, 3rd down - deep ball to Jennings complete for 43 yards. How many of those are over-throws by # 4 or thrown into coverage? Better decisions, playing within himself - this is soooo much fun to watch.
