Packers Daily Links: Rodgers Critiques Finley

In an interview on Wednesday, quarterback Aaron Rodgers gave some constructive criticism directed at tight end Jermichael Finley. That and more in today's Daily Links...

Quoted in an article by Chris Jenkins of the Associated Press, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers both praised and critiqued tight end Jermichael Finley on Wednesday. ''I think the mental mistakes are the ones that I believe can be cured through preparation,'' Rodgers said Wednesday. ''And as gifted and talented as that boy is — and he's an incredibly talented man, the big fellow — I think he needs to tighten it up a little bit with some of the mental mistakes.'' Finley did not provide any reaction for the article on Wednesday.

Former Packers safety Brandon Underwood has been suspended for two games by the NFL. "The Packers explored re-signing Underwood after Nick Collins' season-ending injury but were worried about the forthcoming suspension," writes Bill Huber of Packer Report. "While we originally reported that the suspension would begin when/if Underwood signs with a team, a league spokesman said the suspension begins with this week's games, meaning Underwood is eligible to play in Week 6." Not that I think this is likely, but is it perhaps a possibility that the Packers continue not to fill Collins' roster spot until Underwood's suspension is over?

More on Brandon Underwood's suspension comes from JSOnline, PackersNews.com and ESPNMilwaukee.com.

It's looking more and more like there's a less than 50% chance Ryan Grant plays this weekend against the Packers. "The Green Bay Packers running back expressed frustration Wednesday that he might be held out of the Denver Broncos game Sunday because the medical staff is reluctant to clear him," writes Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "A decision won't be made until Friday, but Grant was held out of practice and probably will be again Thursday." Based upon comments from head coach Mike McCarthy, it looks as if rookie running back Alex Green will see some action on Sunday.

More on Ryan Grant comes from ESPNMilwaukee.com, JSOnline, the Green Bay Press-Gazette and Fox Sports Wisconsin.

Offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga is in the same boat as Ryan Grant. “What happens a lot of times when you have injuries and then players are trying to get ready to play, they’re of the opinion they’ll be ready to go by Sunday,” Mike McCarthy is quoted as saying by Packer Report. “Our medical staff is not of the same opinion. That’s really what’s come out of the evaluation today. So, we’ll give them until Friday to see where those two are. But they’ll be pressed to make this game.” McCarthy also said Bulaga is "exceeding expectations," for what it's worth.

More on the injuries to Bryan Bulaga and Ryan Grant comes from PackersNews.com and JSOnline.

More on the nine players held out of practice on Wednesday comes from PackersNews.com, JSOnline and ESPNMilwaukee.com.

The offense won't change if Marshall Newhouse has to replace Bryan Bulaga on Sunday, writes Rob Demovsky of the Press-Gazette. “I think everybody on offense was encouraged the way Marshall just jumped in there and played in that environment with the crowd noise,” McCarthy is quoted as saying. “We did not cut out anything on the call sheet. That’s really the first question that’s asked as a play caller. You’re on the headsets with the other coaches going through the packages and (asking if there’s) anything we need to stay away from? Marshall did a nice job.”

More on Marshall Newhouse comes from the Journal Sentinel and the Packers official website.

Center Scott Wells' value is increasing, writes Pete Dougherty of the Press-Gazette. "Wells, in the meantime, has been playing his best football going on three years now, and at age 30 is at a position where players routinely perform well several years into their 30s," writes Dougherty. "With no ready-made replacement on the roster, Wells looks like a prime candidate for a contract extension." It could happen before season's end.

Safety Morgan Burnett is featured in an article by Tyler Dunne of the Journal Sentinel. "Losing Nick Collins is a major blow to the Green Bay Packers defense," writes Dunne. "Players agree three straight Pro Bowl seasons cannot be replaced. Somehow within the structure of Dom Capers' defense, the Packers needed to find playmakers elsewhere." Burnett has been that player so far.

Linebacker Clay Matthews is the honorary chairman of AIDS Walk Wisconsin taking place on Saturday. Articles are at the Journal Sentinel and via the Associated Press.

Articles on the Packers' upcoming opponent, the Denver Broncos, come from Packer Report, Fox Sports Wisconsin and the Packers' official website.

Players comment on being the No. 1 run defense in the NFL.

A breakdown of expansion in the Lambeau Field south endzone is at JSOnline.

Breast cancer awareness with several pink elements will be recognized at the Packers-Broncos game.

Some notes on the Packers appear at Fox Sports.

The Packers are looking to maintain momentum, according to the Associated Press.

"Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers both praised and critiqued tight end Jermichael Finley "

I'm tempted to say this is something that should be handled inside the locker room. But, maybe Rodgers has already tried that and hasn't gotten the on-field response he wanted.

Watch the clip at Packers.com.

Really making something that is not there. He just made a point that Finley missed some assignments.

Essencially he said Finley is so good he can get by with those mistakes, but that Finley has the potential to be the best ever if he really works at it.

Eh, Jason Wilde did a follow-up on Tueday with AR. He set it up by saying, "we know you don't say anything you haven't thought through." Then he hit him with the criticism emedded in the comment. AR didn't really run away from the idea that he was sending Finley a message.

I laughed when I read this. Remember when Finley called-out AR twice in his rookie year? Payback's a bit$h, eh Jermikel? Seriously, Finley isn't known for his mental acuity. AR needs to cut the man some slack.

I am stunned that our white quarterback, some three years older than #88, just called his black teammate, "boy." First the douchy Ford commercials, now this?

I wouldn't read anything racist into it. If you listen inteviews with all the players (black, white, whatever) they are constantly calling each other boy or son. And it isn't used to assert dominance in some territorial pee in the corner to mark the territory fashion. It's pretty much universally used in a positive light. Let's not be making mountains out of molehills.

He did call him a man later in the same sentence.

Why are you going racial btw? or do you normally declare everyone's skin color when you rehash a story?

RE: Bulaga and Grant wanting to play but the medical staff holding them back. I remember when players often tried getting out of a game by using injury as an excuse and the team insisting they play anyway. Things have changed and for the better. Both Bulaga and Grant should sit this one out.

This is interesting only because usually Rodgers seems like he would marry Finley if he could...

Maybe AR caught Finley cheating on him so he got pissed and criticized him just a theory.
