Joseph's Judgement: LaFleur Needs Work on Away Game Prep

Head Coach still Struggling to get the Pack Fired Up on the Road

As Week 5 came upon the Green Bay Packers, I knew it had all the makings of a "trap game":

1. Playing overseas for the first time.

2. Playing against a scrappy New York Giants squad that had been in every game this season and had already upset a 2021 Playoffs team in the Titans.

But most of all...

3. Matt LaFleur's continued pattern of uneven performances on the road outside his division.

Don't get me wrong, I believe Matt LaFleur is a good coach. He's displayed that by having one of the best head coaching starts in NFL history. He's breathed life into an offense (and a quarterback) that seemed unimaginative, outdated, and disenchanted. But I have yet to see Matt LaFleur rise from good to great; he can start by finding a way to turn the Packers into true Road Warriors.

Now on the surface, LaFleur has compiled a more than respectable away record of 18-29 (.621) while coaching in Lambeau. However, when you take away his 7-3 record (.700) against the NFC North, LaFleur drops to a more than modest 11-8 (.579) against the rest of the NFL. Now some of you might be saying, "Well he's still well above .500, that's pretty good right?" It would seem that way until you look at the point differential. The Packers under LaFleur's leadership have been outscored 491-438 in their 19 away games against the rest of the league (-53), and then you start to recall some of the more forgettable performances the Pack have had while on the road either out of conference or out of the division. In fact, the Packers haven't beaten a single non-divisional team on the road by more than 3 points since the 2020 season (Week 7 @HOU & Week 9 @SF)

Just earlier in the week, we read Rasul Douglas' comments about his last trip to London. Now I'm not saying team decisions should be left up to the journeyman defensive back, but on a team with almost purely homegrown talent, I would hope his "words of wisdom" wouldn't fall on deaf ears, especially with a head coach who's already been to London twice. The team's unquestioned leader, Aaron Rodgers even longed for more time in London ahead of the game(albeit for more recreational purposes) Unfortunately, LaFleur chose to leave on Thursday, instead of opting for a Tuesday or Wednesday. Could the lack of time for adequate rest and adjustment have played a factor in the Packers going scoreless in the 2nd half in London? Who's to say....but "possibly" seems more than fair.

It wouldn't be the first time the Packers went scoreless in a half this season; while Tampa Bay is just a "short" flight of 1,385 miles from Green Bay compared to the 3,852 mile trip to London, the offense stalled the entire 2nd half of their Week 3 meeting. And while it's been just over a month ago since the season started, I'm sure we all remember the proverbial "panic button" the Green Bay faithful were pushing when the Packers went scoreless in the 1st half in the opener against a more familiar Minnesota Vikings adversary.

I'm not gonna lie folks, but the only "complete game" I think the Packers have had so far period is "home cookin" against the Bears. (And we all know the Bears still suck)

For the crime of not having the team demonstrate they can play a full four quarters of football at a high level, I adjudicate the following:

Matt LaFleur - GUILTY.

SENTENCE: The Packers have a LONG way to go until their Week 14 Bye, including 5 out of their 6 remaining road contests against the Commanders, Bills, Lions, Eagles, and Bears. They'll get their final away game against another out-of-division opponent the Dolphins in Week 16, who like the Giants, are far more formidable than they used to be in seasons past. LaFleur needs to do a top-down evaluation of the entire team: offense, defense, special teams, personnel, scheme, and even how they practice and prepare to get this 2022 squad going in the right direction when it comes to grinding out a win on the road.

The Packers have 3 straight away games before Mike McCarthy's return to Lambeau with a Cowboys team that looks primed for a deep post-season run(I can't believe I just typed that). If Matt LaFleur want's both his team, the league, and most importantly the fans to believe this is still a "Super Bowl or bust" type of roster he MUST come out of that 3-game road streak no less than 2-1.

Can LaFleur evade a middling start to the 2022 Campaign? I believe he can, just so long as he can prepare this team to fight for 60 minutes every week no matter where the field is located.

IMO one of the first things MLF needs to do is replace Royce Newman. Either move Jenkins inside to RG and Zack Tom or Yosh to RT, or move Jenkins to LG, Runyon to RG, and Zack Tom or Yosh to RT. Personally, I'd keep EJ on the right side with Tom or Yosh, but Jenkins's BEST position is Guard. Once that is done RUN THE DAMN BALL!!!

Next, I'd have MLF, the rest of the Offensive Staff, and maybe even Gute, have a sit down with Rodgers and tell him to just run the F'ng offense. CLEARLY, what has been going on ISN'T working. You gave AJ Dillon who BTW was averaging 5.7 YPC the ball 6 times. WTF Aaron! We understand YOU want to get Cobb or this week Lewis and Lazard more involved, but let's just focus on getting Jones and Dillon the ball a MINIMUM of 30 to 40 touches a game. Get that working and EVERYTHING will start clicking.

I heard Silverstein asked, Joe Barry if it was smart to use his secondary the way he has been the first 5 weeks, and WHY Joe Barry are you playing this shitty soft zone with your CB's 10 yards off on 3rd and short? Barry did admit it wasn't the best way to go about it and he'd be more aggressive. Obviously, this isn't how the conversation went but you get the idea. NOW, we'' see if Barry is just another Packers Coach who gives us lip service but doesn't back it up with action.

I'm sorry folks, I know I've been pretty negative this week but this is beyond ridiculous. IMO there's just no excuse to be playing offense and defense like this with the personnel the Packers have.

You are right, there are no excuses. Barry recently said he’ll take a more aggressive defensive approach, so we’ll see if he does and how creative he gets.

Cant move Nijman with Bakh as he is. That’s the frustrating thing. We might actually be better if Bakh gets fully back, but at the moment we are unable to shift Nijman and probably less good than when Nijman was starting. I lack your confidence that Tom has shown enough to be a significant improvement at RT this year. If I had to go with a different RT, it might be Walker.

Newman is the biggest culprit on the O-line. I think Tom should line up at RG.

The difference between home and away games is MLF only flaps his arms at home games. Someone should do the analytics on win vs loss differential in flap and non-flap games. I think it would be significant from a statistical standpoint. MLF could use the results to determine if he should flap at away games. He doesn’t ever make any in-game adjustments so it’s not like he’s busy coaching or anything. He might as well be flapping.

He must have been flapping pretty hard, though, in order to fly himself all the way to London

"Away game prep?" Is that a thing? Like significantly different than "Home game prep?"

Minnesota, Tampa and the Giants on the road (11-4). Chicago and New England at home (4-7). Maybe there are other explanations than the flight schedule.

They still call it typing?

Nick said everything needed above. Thanks. Try not to over-exert yourself Nick.

egbertsouse is heading in the right direction too. I think MLF needs to concentrate on more left flaps maybe a couple right flaps to mix it up. Reminds me of the coach I most despise in Pete Carol from Seatle. Never could stand his sideline antics.

Someone should tell MLF that his arm flapping looks ridiculous by the HC and he should concentrate more on what the opposition is doing and what his team is NOT doing.

I began to question MLF’s judgment, when he decided to hire Joe Barry

Never stopped wondering why MLF hired a guy fired at his last three DC stops? Two peas in a pod maybe?

Joseph, I appretiated that you try to be positive. I have to say that history is not on your side. First of all, Packers roster is not SB or bust. Packers roster is for the future. Only few players on Packers are SB or bust - ACR, Lewis, Cobb, Crosby and possibly Bakh. The rest of the team is young enough to have time to win SB down the road.

Second, what some posters already stated here on different topics, it looks like MLF is not doing his HC job, but possibly concentrated on OC job, while leave DC and defense coaches to take care of defense under the tutelage of Joe Barry. Only one coach doing his job properly - Rich Bisaccia. Looks like MLF as play caller worries more about how to please ACR than what opponents are doing at D. Also, to me it looks ridiculous that you keep Toure inactive every game, while you are keeping Amari Rodgers on the team. It is obvious that he is not KR and just average to below average PR. I'm sure that RB can find another PR/KR on the roster who'll play better than Amari. For me it will be blessing for Amari and Packers if something happens so that Amari goes to IR (I do not call for anything serious, just some soft tissue issue that you can not solve in 3 to 4 games) what will push Packers to try somebody else on those 2 duties.

Special story is Packers QB1. Some issues many posters here have noticed already last season. It looks like ACR did not do progression throug the field before made throws. Last season inacurate throws were relatively rare, but this season those inacurate throws start to come in bunches and we do not notice how ACR screen the field through the progression. Some find excuses that Packers OL are weak at pass protection, but those weird throws occurs also in situation when he had good protection.

By my opinion, the most worrisome thing came out after the last game vs Giants. Some players, from D side of the ball (like Jaire, for example) had some observation aired publicly about D strategy they not like. Also, Aaron jones comment on those last 2 plays in the red zone (3rd and 2, 4th and 2) is something that we are not used to hear publicly earlier through MLF time with Packers. That shows that in the Packers Locker room exists turmoil or the beggining of it.

Also, if someone did not read the book "Peters' principle" I recomend you to read. That principle may be the problem why Packers offense is so unimaginative. Peter's principle say that every person advance in hierarchy to the level of his/her incompetence. Stenavich is surely wondeful OL position coach, but we may ask ourselves does he has in himself what is necessary to be OC. Same principle may be used to explain succesful ILB coach who became DC (Joe barry) with suspicious results.

I hope other posters will be able to undestand my English in what I wrote above.
