Joe Whitt Jr. joining several former Packers in Cleveland

The former Packers defensive backs coach will join players and personnel people who he worked with in Green Bay.

The Cleveland Browns continue their evolution into Green Bay East.

Long time Packers assissitant Joe Whitt Jr. is reportedly set to join the Browns.

While in Green Bay, Whitt worked with and helped develop several players, including Sam Shields, Al Harris, Tramon Williams, Casey Hayward, Jaire Alexander and Charles Woodson.

When Whitt was let go by the Packers last week, Woodson went to bat for him publicly.

Here’s a crazy question: Are the Browns better off in every facet besides owner (Obviously Packers don’t have one) and QB? (Rodgers still better than Baker)

hell no. packers have better corners, interior dlinemen, wideouts, RBs, olinemen, and kicker. the browns have a lot of trash to sort through from their last regime, and I dont think the packers' leftovers are the place to be looking.

Better vheck those rosters again.
Browns have already got rid of the trash.
They will be contenders next year.

They have a lot of talent due to their high draft picks and the packers have suffered with Ted Thompson at the helm. But wait, some of those geniuses that fed Ted their scouting reports went to Cleveland, so give them a few years and they will be back to mediocre.

Or, did John Dorsey's exit expose TT for what he was - a 2nd rate talent evaluator? I vote the latter unless TT's downfall was dementia. Too bad Mark Murphy didn't notice it 3 years sooner. But alas, I like his picks for GM, HC and DC. Would have much preferred Monken to Hackett as OC but you can't have everything. Letting the STC walk out w/o a contract was a major disappointment. Then again, he might have been hired away in a year or two.

Doesn't matter how they acquired the talent, the point is they have better talent over all than the Packers at this time, contrary to the posters comment.

Considering the Browns have picked in the top 10 in the draft for the last 100 years or so, they should be pretty awesome by now. They will soon be known as Green Bay East.

Great question ShanghaiKid. Are the Browns better off in every facet? I don't know a lot about the Browns players but I definitely would say they are better in the two areas that are absolutely crucial to long term success. They are better in the front office and at the quarterback position. You hit on those two and you can win for a long long time. Green Bay once had that but I do not believe they have that any longer. The guy who's going to benefit the most will be the new Brown head coach Kitchens? He's walking into a brand new house already furnished. The absolute best situation a new head coach could ask for.

On the money Rip. I love the Pack! But I DON'T love the front office. Decision by committee is ridiculous. Cleveland has had draft picks lately that have been solid in offense AND defense. The Pack is partial a victim of there own success with their lousy draft positions. The smart rats have left the ships and Murphy doesn't have enough fingers to put in the too many holes in the dike. I'm afraid it's going to be many long winters before the Pack will return to their glory days. Honestly, I wish I was wrong but I'm to old and have seen too much to Urah rah. The NFL has done what they have designed with the system..parity.

Thanks WinUSA. i am reading what you have to say and it's almost like you stole my my mind. You and I are definitely on the same page to a tee on the future of this team. I especially love what you wrote about the Packers being a "partial victim of their own success with their lousy draft positions". This is where Ted doesn't get the credit he should. At some point his success robbed him of his greatest assets, his front office employees like Dorsey, Wolf, Schneider, and MacKenzie. You replace those people with less experienced inferior guys, you are going to take a hit. I wasn't kidding when I said this entire front office has such a 1970's feel to it currently. I see I am not alone. I hope to hell I am wrong but it's hard not to feel this way when it seems like anyone who's worth a darn is leaving to other teams. That's what happened in the 70's. Nobody wanted to come here.

Do the Browns have anyone in their front office or coaching staff that wasn't released or fired from their previous job?

I'd imagine Pettine had some input on which defensive coaches to keep. Maybe he wasn't impressed by Whitt.

So will these ex-Packer staff members have better success in Cleveland because of better talent with an easier path or will it prove the players in GB were unable to be coached to a needed level because of these same staff members inability?
The comparisons come Aug will be interesting.

Yeah, it will be interesting Taryn. Cleveland took in my opinion two of the most highly respected coaches the Packers had to offer in Campen and Whitt both upgrades for Cleveland. When Charles Woodson says you are good coach that pretty much is all you need. If Cleveland was bad at making decisions they would have signed Ron Zook also. As far as I know he's surprisingly still out there. lol

Wanting to clean out complacency is one thing but losing 2 coaches as respected as Whitt and Campen could be a problem considering they were both excellent coaches. Meanwhile in his best Pity Pease voice LaFluer is still begging Kyle Shannahan for more interviews for his staff. C'mon Kyle Pity pease with ice cream, I know you said no 3 times already but I really, really, really need an offensive line coach, Pease!!!!! With sugar on top?

Rak em!! Most here wanted "hope and change". Well, get ready we are about to find out just what that means. I had my fill of hope and change and was happy it was over with. Now I get it with the Packers. I haven't been this down since they cancelled Joanie Loves Chachi.

Unfortunately, in this respect, Woodson has done very nicely for himself outside football. He doesn’t need to put up with the life of a coach.

Coaches get stale and complacent when in one place for many years. MM, Campen and Whitt all fit into that category. The Pack need to reset on the coaches too.

Whitt may be a good coach, but as big a question is his fit with Pettine. I am not sure that was all that natural. As for Campen, I am sorry to lose him, but it looks like a promotion and both open the doors to reshaping the staff to the new regime. We wanted change, well this is part of getting real change ...,

Oh.... And "Truthfully Rodgers didn't play bad this season"????? Better get a new prescription for your rose colored glasses. First, Rodgers is a warrior. He has been pummeled to a pulp. This reflected in his footwork, his constant throw aways, and his consistency. Rodgers himself would say he had a poor season as well as anyone else who doesn't have a seeing eye dog. He was playing like a punch drunk boxer- and who the hell can blamed him? We had better put a OL in front of him (depth) or we had better look for another quarterback because at this rate he will NOT make it to his 40th birthday.

I see the off season has set in and it’s only complainers left on the comment board. I’m sorry if your all nervous, and have angst, but this is what all the complainers have been hoping for, change. Now they bitch about that. Cleveland took a bunch of coaches and head office people from a underachieving organization. Packer koolaid? You all have Brown koolaid, and your grumpy because it tastes like sh@@t too. :)

6-9-1 with one of the best QBs in the league and no one is supposed to complain? All should be happy, happy, joy, joy. OK, but the next time you take your spouse to a fancy restaurant and drop 300 bills for dinner and wine, and the fish is cold, the vegetables mushy, and the wine tastes like vinegar; you better not utter one single negative word.

That’s were we differ, I’ve been to Lambeau several times but I’d really rather watch it on tv, I wouldn’t drop 300 on it. 10 bucks for a miller lite pee water? Com’n man! I didn’t buy fake stock either. I did just buy a t shirt on the clearance rack for 8 bucks though(smoking deal) . I love the pack but I don’t feel like they need my money. Either way id understand that the product is just the product. I don’t get to order it medium rare and when it comes blackened I then get to bitch. Or is it that? I should just order 16-0 and a super bowl! Awesome! We’re set next year!

I don’t have to live in Green Bay or even Wisconsin to support the team. I live in South Carolina. But I do love and support the team. Family members buy me cool stuff with the logo on it. It’s too damn cold to visit there in the winter but I might consider it someday.
Cleveland has the rock and roll hall of fame and is closer but I am not a fan of the team. I can see why they are taking the green bay model for the team. Heck, why not? Nothing else has been working for them. The Packers took a lot of success from the West Coast style when MH changed things around. So maybe the Browns are doing the same.
