Gut Reactions: Packers Rams
Aaron gives his Gut Rections to the Packers Divisional round win over the Rams
By PackerAaron
- 30 points on the #1 defense in the NFL. Not too shabby.
- Once Jaylen Ramsey was crying and Aaron Donald was mad, this game was over.
- Corey Linsley was masterful today.
- The run game was beautiful today.
- Why does Mike Pettine hate me?
- Hell of a day from Allen Lazard
- Rodgers got a little aggressive at the end of the first half.
- But I loved his pump fake and run into the endone.
- Loved the motion of Davante by the goalline
- Victory formation bitches.
- My God I love this team.
- One more game.
- Go Pack Go.

Good teams are in the playoffs for a reason...it's hard to hold them down for 60 minutes.
Still...Rams possessions in the second half--
3 plays, -6 yards, punt
11 plays, 79 yards, TD
7 plays, 25 yards, punt
7 plays, 5 yards, turnover on downs

Goff was throwing pinpoint passes; Akers was tough to bring down running the ball; and Jefferson was catching an array of passes that included a couple of nice scoops on low throws.

Crosby was fine. They went for two cuz it would have made it a three score game.
Pulpfriction01

Going for two was the right move. It would have turned it into a 3 score game. Instead of it coming down to the defense down a single touchdown at the end like it did.

I don't think you can. The guy who had lined up on that side began to move towards Adams and then saw he was going to leave the tight end (Tonyan maybe) free if he did that so he stayed put. Rodgers knew he had two opportunities to play pitch and catch depending on how those two defenders moved. Great, great play.

This team is so gooooood! Can you imagine what the score would have been if Aaron would have hit MVS the 2x he was open for TDs, if Lazard would have hung on the earlier TD throw, and if our special teams wouldn’t screw up in a game. Wow!

On that second deep ball to MVS it seemed the defender grabbed his arm, though somewhat subtly to avoid what still should have been a pass interference penalty.

Four sacks by the Packers and how many by the #1 defensive team in the NFL?
PewAuKeeFan
January 17, 2021 at 01:13 am
There is a reason why Rams are the #1 defensive team. They played all 4 teams from the NFC (L)East. The average from those 4 were 13.75 points allowed.
Nope. They don't deserve #1. To those that say Aaron Donald was injured: Bakt was also injured and OUT for the season. Sean McVay had mentioned that Donald was fine. Did he lie to make the Packers waste time scheming for Donald? Didn't help them either way.

Superb in spreading the ball around early in the first two drives, with targets to Davante, MVS, ESB, and Big Bob, and handoffs to Jones, Williams, and Dillon. The energy from that kind of involvement pays off throughout the game.
***
The small plays set up the big plays. The Packers came close on attempts at three long passes early in the second half, then converted on the awesome 50-plus yarder to Lazard that was just about enough to seal the deal. Though Lazard dropped a potential big play earlier, him being involved in the passing game throughout the game helps him to be ready for that next opportunity.
***
The best the defense has been for a long, long, long time in stopping third downs, plus a key fourth down. That was so satisfying!!! Kudos to players and coaches.
***
What a great team win!!! A wonderful day for loving football, especially when it involves the Packers having so many contributors to earn a stellar playoff victory.

If I have a minor gripe it’s that we went much more conservative on D in the second and third, going lighter and looked much less effective. Then in the 4th we get aggressive and go back to being effective. Pettine should just stick to what we do well.
Swisch
January 16, 2021 at 07:11 pm
That could be a good subject for analysis.
As good as the offense played, it seems the game should not have been as close.
I wonder what happened to give up those two touchdown drives to the Rams that seemed to go rather quickly and easily.
The good news is seeing the defense on an upward trajectory for the most part under the coaching of Pettine over a good number of games -- giving me hope that Pettine is learning week by week how to improve the scheming to bring out the best in our defenders.

Right now, it is between Jenkins and Jaire as Gutey's best pick. Gary and Savage are both making their way into that discussion. Neither are there yet. But it's a good thing they are trending in that direction.
Along with Kenny Clark's usual late-season charge, it is no surprise that the defense is playing much better lately. They have 4 legit pass rushers in Smith (x2), Clark and Gary. They have a lock-down CB in Alexander. And two pretty good Safeties. That's plenty of talent to play championship caliber defense. Since late November, they have been.

This was my kind of game--very enjoyable to watch and a minimum of penalties. Excellent game plan on both sides of the ball, and executed about as well as it could be. Even without the Rams having the full services of Donald, piling up nearly 500 yards of offense and controlling the clock the way the Packers did is remarkable. Great work by the O-line and tough running by the backs; loved the moves by Davante and MVS to get important first downs, and of course, the fake by Rodgers on the TD.
Whether it's Tampa Bay or NO (or further), this type of offensive game plan....well, what's not to like?

Great job Defense! Offense sputtered with a couple drops and the Defense stepped it up!

Radom thoughts: Mike Pettine cares not for your feelings.... Monster game from the offensive line. All game long all RB getting to the second level, an elite performance by the entire group. Rodgers was clean the whole game. Punished the Ram's defense from beginning to end. Packers got good Geoff, heck of game. Too bad the Rams got Hall of Fame Aaron Ha Ha Ha. The Defense denied LA the long ball and smothered the run game. Smith Bros what a game. Z. Smith will haunt the Rams dreams this off season. Defensive front 7 was special, tip your hat to Barnes, heck of game with the 'club'. (Not thinking about special teams no no no no...) Packers beat a very good Rams team playing at a high level today. This team has elevated their play at the right time. In their house, it doesn't matter who they play. NFC Champ game for the second time in two years. (YESSSSSS) I need a (Root) beer...

What impressed me the most about this game is there wasn't anything fluky about it.
The Rams had no TO's. No ints, no fumbles. No special team gaffes. Not a lot of penalties except the big one by Donald. They played a clean game.
Goff actually played pretty well. He made the short throws and a few intermediate ones.
But he was on target the whole game. He just didn't get anything long down field.
Akers did Ok, but no big runs.
Yet GB won by two scores and could have scored again if they needed to. One of their best games of the year.

Many drinks in but I think I can type this...
The offensive line was absolutely BEASTLY!
Mumbling to the tv for the Packers not to have one of those slow third quarter starts - and then Jones promptly goes for a 60 yard run on the first play! Ok then!
Rodgers was off on a few but overall this offense truly seems to only get stopped when they make a mistake and stop themselves. First ranked D, 32nd ranked d - doesn't make much difference to this team right now. They are playing that well on offense.
Everyone kept saying that the Packers other receivers need to step up and help Adams and i think MVS, Lazard and Tonyan all did well today.
D was good today even though everyone will bad mouth it and point to Goff's insane pass completion percentage on his collection of 2 yard throws. 18 points will win every and I mean every single game this team plays and was a job well done.
The crowd was loud. I am watching the Bills game right now and you could definitely hear the Packers fans more prominently. Specially that annoying banging the sign thing that sounded like rain drops on a "tin roof, ...rusted" except no one got pregnant I would surmise. That comes later tonight. (humming Love Shack now).

I couldn't believe how well we ran the ball. It looked as if the Rams weren't getting off the ball at all. So great to watch Aaron Jones turn two yard runs into six to eight yard runs. His explosiveness and balance are beautiful things to watch. Williams is a stud, too.
Jenkins maturity not to retaliate when the Defensive POY had him by the facemask. Veteran presence from a young OL. Can't say enough about the OL today.
Do we still have to wait until the Packers have beaten more teams with a winning record, or can we go ahead and be excited now?

Yes, But I was referring to LAs offense. LA was 2 of 8 on 3rd down conversions. LA hurried to the LOS.(On 1st & 2nd) And it wasn't a 2 min. drill. Or to catch a 12 man on the field. It was to stop the defensive alignment.

Hates off to Billy Turner and Rick Wagner... The whole O-Line was great but Turner and Wagner were great too.
CLEARLY Rashawn Gary ISN'T A BUST. That kid is a BEAST. He was handing Whitworth who's a hell of a RT.
Aaron Jones first carry of the 2nd half reminded me of the carry Eddie Lacy had when Matt Flynn brought em back after being down 23 points at halftime. My God I HOPE we can find a way to keep him!
Jalen Ramsey wasn't a factor really. Matter of fact, the WHOLE Rams defense wasn't!!

So stoked that we get another NFC Championship game. I haven’t mentioned it before, but I have heard completely enough about San Francisco and how our D will never be good without better drafting and and blah blah blah. I burned that one out of my memory and am sick of hearing others bring it up. Well, we are back, ouR D is just fine and SF was LAST in their division. Suck it realists!

Five reasons that I believe this is the year.
Jenkins taking it to Donald, Set the tone.
MVS starting to really get it. See juke after catch for the added yards.
Oline even with out Bahk is for real and getting better.
True 3 RB rotation that can control a game.
Kenny Clark is on fire and has the talent around him.
NickPerry
January 17, 2021 at 04:58 am
Love these 5 reasons TB...
Even though Donald wasn't 100%, he was CLERLY frustrated with Jenkins early as we saw with the 15 yard un-sportsman like conduct penalty. Maybe a 100% Donald makes some difference in this game, but not in the final results. And by next season, I think Jenkins will whip ANYONES ass on a D-Line.
That first catch by MVS and his last, both for first downs were BOTH catches of a guy really building his confidence.
This O-Line is awesome. Lucas Patrick who is supposed to be the "weak link" is playing great too. Hats off to Adam Stenavich. This was yet another guy who I didn't think was a great hire by MLF and boy was I WRONG!
Aaron Jones please don't leave. Jamal Williams, please don't leave even though I know we can't keep you both. AJ Dillion, please be okay!
Kenny Clark...You are THE MAN!!

On the minus side, it was a pretty poor job by FOX in failing to provide updates on the injured players, Lancaster and Dillon. Mason Crosby should be okay as long as he doesn't have to make any tackles, which unfortunately is quite possible with this team's kickoff coverage.
Edit: I just read Tom Silverstein's game blog, and he said that Lancaster came back into the game and that the Dillon injury was to his thigh.

Heard a lot about how good Jalen Ramsey is before this game. He couldn’t stop Adams and Lazard beat him on a crossing pattern. I saw nothing special about him or the rest of the Rams defense for that matter.
I’ll stick with Jaire Alexander thank you very much. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

Somebody gave me a thumbs down and a lecture when I jokingly stated that Alexander is the only shut-down corner in the NFL. So yeah, I REALLY enjoyed watching Ramsey lose his shit. I get that we didn't get Donald's best, but the Packers OL didn't have Bakh at all, so, yeah, I'm just going to say the Packers OWNED the Rams today. Defense wins championships? Apparently not in 2021.
And BTW how about an Oscar for Goff in the category of best losing effort this post-season. He played even better than I thought he would give the circumstances.

January 16, 2021 at 11:22 pm
I think a good defense came up against a very good offense. A. Donald came up against an all pro OL jenkins.
Ramsey came up against an all pro Adams. Rams played well, we played better. We could have scored on final drive. Class act to just run out the clock instead of go ahead by 3 scores especially after Donald/Jenkins confrontation. GPG

As much as I love Jenkins, no... that honor of being the most dominant guard clearly belongs to Quenton Nelson in Indy, who appears to be the freakish love child of John Hannah and Larry Allen.
But damn, Elgton ain't far behind.
Here is the smartest thing that has ever come out of my dumb mouth. On this site, under one of Al's "polluted mindset" articles, on 16 October 2019, I wrote: "Not many people realize it yet, but soon they will be referring to Gutekunst as 'the guy who drafted Elgton Jenkins.'"
Kinda proud of that one. Too bad I've said so many stupid things to tip the scale the other way. lol

Not much I can add that hasn't already been said. So will just say the GBP's look dominant and this year has SB written all over it.

I'd prefer GB plays TB next week despite the shellacking they put on us earlier.
I think NO has an overall better team. Paytons a better coach than Ariens.
If you put pressure on Brady he'll be looking for a piece of Lambeau Field to lie down on and curl up into a ball. Lots of inside and corner blitzes. Play tight man to man coverage. Brady sure as hell isn't going to run when the DBs backs are turned, and even if he does he ain't going nowhere. He's incredibly slow. If you can put pressure on him, he'll throw it up for grabs.

It's time to acknowledge the high talent level of this defense. Jaire, Clark, Savage, Amos, and Z are all playing at All-Pro level. P. Smith and King are playing well... and then you have what I think are the two most recent difference makers; Gary and Barnes. Gary just seems to get better every game to the point that now I expect a QB pressure on almost every down, while he sets the edge as well as I've seen from a Packer in years. Barnes though may be the glue for all of this. He finds the hole and sticks the running back. And remember when the middle of the field was a vast expanse where opposing WRs and TEs would roam freely? Not so much anymore. Our offense is a well-oiled machine, but I come to praise the defense, quickly turning into one as well.

Watching this team play midway through the season I did not even think it was playoff caliber. Sure did come together.... hats off to the coaching staff minus special teams.
MLF Is making adjustments now and that makes a huge difference. Pettine better not use the same zone scheme against Brees or Brady or the Packers won't make it to SB.
Love the Pack's intensity !

Somebody help me out here...
Why would the Rams, on several different occasions, run a wildcat formation in which Akers receives the snap and Goff is flanked out wide? Yeah, I know they scored a TD on a nice run up the gut by Akers from this formation, but they got stoned on all the others. Are the Packers really going to believe that the Rams might ask a rookie running back throw a pass to a rather un-athletic QB who recently had multiple pins inserted into his thumb? Are the Packers going to think that the Rams will run to Goff's side and expect their broken-handed quarterback to block? To me, this was an example of "super-genius" Sean McVay overthinking and deciding to play with 10 guys instead of 11.
Contrary to what the announcers kept saying, I don't think "Oh, you have to know that Akers played quarterback in high school" is really an acceptable explanation.
flackcatcher
January 17, 2021 at 01:55 pm
Way the Rams line up was closer to the old single wing. Makes sense if McVay wanted to protect their QB from blocking or getting hit. That thumb must have been plenty big and sore fairly late in the game. Fox guys were really a step behind all game long. Makes one wonder if they were on site at all.

I'm impressed by Krys Barne's play. He injured his hand on a play and was questionable to return. Next thing I know is Barnes is on the field with a club on his hand. If he did not have that club, he probably makes that INT. A solid guy at ILB!
