Gut Reactions: Packers lose in embarrassing fashion to Bucs

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers 34-20 loss to the Bucs.

  • The Packers are who we thought they were.
  • The first down the defense gave up on 2nd and 18 finally broke me.
  • If this defense doesn't get a sack, it's over.
  • Aaron Jones. Nice to see ya buddy. Would have liked to see more.
  • Tough one all around.
  • Jordan Love once again missing too many easy ones but then making a couple incredible throws.
  • Kinglsey Enegbare with a great play to take the ball away.
  • Van Ness also had a good game.
  • Thought TJ Slaton played well.
  • Wicks was fantastic as well.
  • Watching Rudy Ford asking what the call is as the ball is snapped and then having the defense give up a back breaking touchdown - just brutal. Though good hustle at the end.
  • Can't believe we get to watch this team on the next two holidays. Going to be fun.
  • Going to be a tough week in Titletown.
  • Have to keep perspective here. As tough as this will probably be down the stretch, this is almost exactly what I think most honest observers would have expected coming into this season. An uneven team, filled with young talent, that we hoped would show signs that they can build a contender around in the coming years. As tough as today was, I still think they're in a good spot looking foward.
  • If they completely revamp what they're doing on defense.
  • Go Pack.

The only real hope that comes out of a loss like this is that MLF will actually look at the wisdom of retaining Joe Barry and decide to move on.

Though we would lose continuity, we don't want continuity from the last two games.

Again, I’m so sick of allowing QBs to have career days against our D. I want the Bucs DC. No rushing 3 while dropping your DBs 12 yards. Instead he brings the house, Love gets sacked and fumbles. Game over.

The fumble had no effect on the game. Once Love was sacked on that fourth down play (which seemed to be all the receivers going deep, so Love was forced to hold the ball too long), the fumble really didn't matter, except for aesthetic reasons. But as far as Barry's defense? He needed to go last year. But anyone thinking of replacing him in season, here are your choices for his replacement. https://www.packers.com/team/coaches-roster/
Anyone jump out at you as a solid replacement?

"Sorry. Misheard Wayne on the radio..."

Wayne had a fairly error-free day today, although my bar for him is quite low these days. I laughed out-loud at his description of a would-be pass play where he said (reflexively at this point) "Mayfield throw over the middle" then revised because the ball hadn't been thrown. Poor guy, just a collection of rote phrases held together with skin.

Everything LaFleur said couldn’t happen after repeated by Barry. At this point LaFleur is a joke as a Head Coach and Barry should just pick up his things.

There’s no point now in not giving someone else a chance to gain experience. Our D couldn’t be meaningfully worse designed and called than it has been twice this week.

It doesn't seem as though there's much to lose, if anything, by firing Barry.
Let's go into these last three games with someone different coaching the defense, and seek for improvement.

If we win the last three games and one playoff game, maybe LaFleur stays.
If not, he probably should go, too.

Offense missing Watson, Musgrave, Bahktiari, and Dillon. Having to constantly rely on different skill players every week.

Defense is clearly the top problem. Constantly watch Packers score and then Barry defense gives up easy scores. Barry was never the top choice for DC and we have all seen why. When announcers are saying Packers defense may be the worst in the league it is time to for the DC.

Especially when the offense is gifted a possession starting on the Tampa Bay 4 yard line, and they still score only 20 points, and the average points per game in the NFL this year is 22. But I'm told this is good enough, I guess.

Bad loss! Gave up over 450 yards playing at home. We should have seen some improvement by this point in the season. Team is going backwards.
Defense is allegedly focused on stopping the pass but allowed 353 yards passing. Then at the end they couldn’t stop the run even on 4th down when everyone knew Tampa was going to run the ball. Something needs to change.
Thanks, Since ‘61

If Barry is fired after this game, as of tomorrow, then it'll be worth the loss on the field.
What would be extremely painful is going ahead with Barry.
If Barry is gone, I think it'll be a lot easier for players and fans to get up for these final three games.

In any case, do not give up on any of these last three games.

Barry will undoubtedly be fired after the season, unfortunately LeFleur will be back. And that’s the bigger problem.
MLF & his assistants:
Kept Pettine
Hired Mennenga
Hired Drayton
Hired Barry
And his offense is sloppy, mistake prone , slow starting and inconsistent. Even in the 13-3 seasons it was mostly Rodgers and close games.
It’s an insult to bring MLF back and I think players like Alexander and Bahktiari know there is no chance here.

I don't get the line of thinking that this is who we thought they'd be coming into the season. Record wise, probably but I think most observers agree that the offense would take time to gel and the defense would carry them early on. The complete opposite has happened. It's embarrassing and Barry needs to go. The defense has cost them many games this year and with those games, they're in the playoffs.

on two of the Bucs TDs to wide open receivers there was also another receiver completely open in a blown coverage; so Mayfield had not one but two easy choices to make. thank god i unloaded my tickets for this one and will do so for the remainder. it is not that there is bad D; it is that there is NO D. i guess when you have the DC who oversaw the Lions 0-16 year you got your qualifications to end up in Green bay secure year after year. and i still do not think Love is the answer; too many routine throws he cannot make and then he makes a perfect one just to remind you, that something is wrong with his basic preparation. time really to clean house

It doesn’t really matter anymore. 85 games in to the LeFleur era and it’s painfully obvious what we have.
Tired of missing Watson, tired of hearing about high picks on defense. Honestly, Campbell, Walker, Stokes, Nixon, Owens, and Ford could never start on a decent defense. But it doesn’t matter. Joe Barry could screw up the 85 Bears.
But it starts and ends at Matt LeFleur.
How did the Giants do today after embarrassing Green Bay?
You can bet Tampa won’t score 30+ next week.
My biggest problem is I know Matt LeFleur will be back in 2024 and we will be at 8 or 9 wins at best. Even if Vic Fangio ran the defense. Until LeFleur is fired, nothing, absolutely nothing will change. Only the Green Bay Packers need more than 85 games to reach that conclusion.

I didn't enjoy the game today. In these trying times, I find solace in the words of the late John Madden. Madden said, "It doesn't matter if the horse is blind, just load the wagon." How true those words ring today, and everyday for that matter.

There is a collection of talented young athletes in Green Bay. Some of them play football for the Packers. It would be best if they were provided with structure and guidance to be successful. Always remember, as ye sew, so shall ye reek.

Stokes is mediocre or hurt since his rookie season. His first game back and he did what exactly?
Part of the problem ( besides Barry and MLF) is the belief in so many players that just aren’t winning football type players.
Watson can’t catch passes in street clothes, where he’s spent about half his career, Campbell sucks, Walker doesn’t play like a top pick, in fact he’s invisible, stokes sucks, ford, savage, Nixon ?? You’re not winning with those guys on your starting 11.

Barry deserves an extension—Defense gave up only 452.
The wide receiver group is talented and exciting.
Our TE’s are gonna be outstanding.
Love completes impossible throws—and misses throws impossible to miss.
D’Vondre fooled us—he’s a liability.
Go Packers!!!

Campbell is a couple years and a few soft-tissue injuries away from his big season. He's not the same player he was that year, but that was lightning in a bottle. There was a reason he was available...underphysical, slow the ball, not nearly what he used to be in coverage.

The inside linebackers were in bad matchups most of the game and Barry made no adjustments. The DBs spent the day in zone and the Tampa receivers found every seam and Barry made no adjustments. The few times Barry blitzed, it seemed to work, but then he stopped blitzing.

Worst of all the defense seemed to quit late in the game, likely because they had no faith in the scheme and knew they were going to get beaten.

LAC fired Staley, can Lafleur actually be a head coach and fire Barry? This week will be interesting.

For once, the run defense didn't kill this team...but Mayfield took whatever he wanted today. It didn't matter who he was throwing to, but he made money between the numbers today. Tampa punted once. Defense had plenty of opportunities to get off the field, but just couldn't do it.

Tampa made the adjustments to slow down the Packers offense...Packers made no adjustments to slow down Tampa. That says it all.

Kraft is a better TE than Musgrave. His Film showed. Musgrave was injured most of his final year in college, less reps than Kraft over three years. Kraft should have been featured down the stretch and work to the gold zone. We end up with another fourth and forever conundrum. The Fullback scored for Tampa. You need bad asses on your team if you want to establish a physical presence.

I cannot believe the Packers were favored by 3 points. That said, I thought the team put in a strong effort, with some strong individual performances on both sides of the ball. The problems with this team IMHO rest primarily with substandard coaching at all levels. But again, good enough as far as Mike Murphy and the Executive Committee are concerned. BTW, I noticed the Giants, who dominated the Packers last week, were obliterated by the Saints today. gpg.

It's Deja Vu all over again. Everybody on the planet. including Mo Drayton's mother, new Drayton was way overmatched as ST coordinator. Not Matty "we'll look at film and see what needs correcting" LaFleur. Well what happens is you lose a home playoff game in embarrassing fashion because your ST screws up while being led by a Coordinator who couldn't correct clocks on day light savings time changes.

Insert Joe Barry above, and remove the playoff loss and here we are again.

To me there is no greater damning evidence that MLF isn't capable of functioning as a Head Coach in the NFL than the Drayton/Barry fiascos.

I thought Pettine should have been done after 1 year, but he wasn't as horrendous a DC as Barry. Drayton made Mennenga seem ok. Just look at all those HIGH draft picks on defense . Our offense is developing nicely. No it’s not perfect but it’s loaded with young players and getting better. The Defense? Gets worse by the game. Why? This Organization needs to take a look at every aspect of said Defense. Player acquisition, player
Development, player coaching. All of it. Today just highlighted a problem that has existed for a while. It must be addressed.

I would say quite a few are over-rated and the evaluation process flawed, but to show the level of incompetence we saw today in the secondary, ILBs standing in glue reading and a so-so pass rush, you have to look at the motivators. letting Douglas walk was not a good move. The draft now takes another CB from the top end. Kleen Haus !

Poor drafting and lack of free agents, and throw in the team is in salary cap hell for the next two seasons. I don't want to see Gute make another draft selection in Green Bay. Especially our #1 pick, I don't want to see another Non -starter in College selected. This team is a mess, and the veterans on the team are now showing signs of frustration and lack of commitment. This is not a serious football team as long as Joe Barry is employed--just pitch and catch to the middle of the field over and over...Yeah, the defense got a couple of big sacks, but then promptly gave up a ton of yardage on the next play to either get in FG position or to pick up a much easier first down.

I liked the effort by the front end of the defense, especially Clark and Slaton. But the LBs and the secondary, I think they were just beleagured and worn out as the game dragged along. The last TD by Tampa, well, we had two defenders crashing into each other, and the receiver blowing by what, five others on his way to the end zone? Keystone Cops all the way.

It would be nice if somebody, either player or executive, would express some public displeasure with the character of this defense. It's admirable to be a loyal soldier, but when it's obvious you're getting embarrassed by stubbornly ineffective scheming week in and week out, someone has to show some courage and call it as they see it. Rock the goddamn boat--it's okay to be frustrated.

Joe Barry frustrates even my dislike for him. I wanted him gone last season like most. But then this season, with a defensive secondary at times of Valentine, Ballantine, Nixon (who has been a pleasant surprise to me- I expected him to be bad as a nickel), Johnson, and Ford, the man turned in some credible defensive performances despite the occasional Barry moments. Gotta respect that. But just when I temper my dislike, we get this game. Frustrating. I do feel confident that he is not a championship level coordinator so if that is the goal, then a change must be made.

wow, where to start? Defense for the second week in a row came up microscopically in a big game. Lets be real here, the past two games have been playoff scenario games. if we win both, we jump the vikings and still got a shot at the lions. conversely, lose both, and we can pretty much dream about next year. LaFleur ripped Barry last week, and now, its time to show him the door. with the draft capital spent on that side of the ball the past three or four drafts, we ought to be seeing dividends. Continued improvement by Kraft, nice to see AJ back, and Love didnt have a bad day . The lack of urgency shown by the defense was really telling . Very sloppy uninspired play by the defense, outside of the efforts of Van Ness, Clarke, and Kingsley. GoPackGo, show Barry the do'......

Barry should just resign and not wait to get fired. Do they allow hari-kiri in GB? Did you see how quickly TB was on our guys on the dump offs.

How does this team beat Detroit and KC and lost to the Giants and TB??? Look at what happened to Giants today (L 24-6).
This comes back to MLF. The team is a mess mentally and planning-wise. Sometimes it gets lucky. That's it.
We won't win with MLF. And it is going to take more than 2 wins in a row to make me reconsider that this time.

Love isn't terrible and he shows general command but he is just too inconsistent. He has some good games but that's it. Who knows what's next with him but we will probably be seeing him next year. But he probably is not going to get that big contract he was hoping for.

The two past wins against playoff teams the Defence looked stellar from the front line to the linebackers covering the gaps to the DB’s and safeties flying around making great plays running tight coverages. It looked as if everything was coming together at the right time for a playoff push. Since then… WTF! The front line is playing well enough but Barry’s not making necessary adjustments. The linebackers are steps behind where they should be. D. Campbell looked like he was running in sand. Previously, Isaiah McDuffie played much faster in the middle and DB’s are back to playing soft coverages. Making the playoffs is out of the question now. It’s time to move on from Joe Barry. The player talent is in place on the field the Coordinator’s talent is what’s lacking.

The worst part of all this is that LaFleur obviously feels untouchable. What owner of any team would watch these past two games and NOT fire the DC, the HC, or both?
Time for Murphy to get off his dead a$$ and fix this mess. If LaFleur doesn't want to fire Barry, tell him "Fine, pack your shit, it's been nice knowing you" !

Dam right joe. its more about money for the pack then championships. They lack a deep pocket owner who is willing to pony up to the bar for free agents to plug holes.

Next year LeFleur and Gutt and Murphy will all be gone by the end of the season.
I cannot see how this team can win six games with that defense and the fact the bears lions and vikes will also be much better and their young guys, lots of them, will be better too but Love wont.

The Packers exemplify the definition of insanity by keeping Joe Barry as defensive coordinator. I'm done watching until something changes. The "Keystone Cops Defense" is anything but funny.

Unless Barry is gone, it's going to be hard to watch these last three games as a fan.
If Barry is still around, I would guess it will be extremely hard to get motivated as a defensive player.

There is a reason that I have nicknamed to GB defense "The Manage-ables" all year long. No down, distance or time frame is unmanageable for the opposition offense against a JB defense. How many _____ & longs were there today? How many did Baker Mayfield convert. The BM QB rating of 158.3 suggests that he converted almost all.

The contrast was the TB defense. Jordan Love had a decent game (rating 111. 5) Jordan Love had the Packers moving on offense in their last two drives. Both drives were stopped when the TB defense executed perfectly executed blitzes in both situations. Net result: 3 total points and no hope of a wild comeback. We never see that from a JB defense.

This is just one reason that the first seasons of Love and AR as starting QB's are eerily similar...both were hamstrung by passive defenses. Will MLF fire JB like McCarthy fired Bob Sanders? Does MLF have a choice at this point? We shall see.

And not just passive, but predictable. TB seemed to have a scheme where receivers could just settle into the hole in coverage they knew would be there, drink a cup of coffee, catch the ball, and take off for a hunk of YAC. Painful to watch.

I notice the same problems on the Jets:

- 1 or 2 guys with giant egos running the show.
Packers----Murphy
Jets----------Rodgers/Woody

Neither Saleh not LaFleur have appropriate authority.

Both teams show foundational issues as a result.

LaFleur can't manage with the authority he has, giving him more would just compound the problems.

Alexander, dont know if he is even playing, but he sucks. Stokes I've beaten him like an old muel on this board. He is just too dam dumb to play in the NFL.
I still remember, the vikes, need five yards for a first. Pre snap Stokes drops way back off the line about 10 yards like he wants a head start? The Vike tight end, runs five, catches pass for first down and Stokes comes up to make the tackle.
I'm thinking wtf would you give him that kind of room if you have all this cover speed and your 6'3?

If LaFleur does not grasp that Joe Barry is not the right DC by now, then he never will.

It was clear in the press conference, based on questions from reporters, that confidence in Barry been shaken to its core.

This team is about where I thought it'd be: 8-9 or 7-10. Todd Bowles just seems to have the Packers number. He's gotta be 3-0 or 4-0 in the past several years against the Packers.

LaFleur is not dumb. I think he got the hint from today's press conference. He'll never fire Barry mid-season unless something extraordinary happened.

Hopefully in 3 weeks, Barry's reign will be over. LaFleur has to know his seat will start getting warm in 2024 if this defense laden with 1st round picks does not improve.

AJ started out hot. I couldn't believe LaFloor didn't call any play-action off AJ's runs. What do you expect when you run AJ 7 times in a row...the defense is going to figure it out. Milquetoast play calling. No long balls to stretch the defense? Argh.

It's weird for me to say this but I'm actually glad our premature playoff hopes are getting doused. This team would only get killed in the first round anyway. It's a young team with potential and I'd rather see it nosedive and precipitate a leadership change. Barry needs to go for sure and maybe LaFleur too. I'm not one to carry a torch and pitchfork but I've seen enough.

I honestly feel we won't see Jaire Alexander the rest of the year. And if t has nothing to do with his injury. During this SIX week layoff, Alexander has been practicing all week for the last 3 weeks. So....what gives??!
I believe he won't play again this year because he e refuses to play for an incompetent clueless DC in Joe Barry
And I don't blame Alexander at all

At this point, everyone knows Barry can't do the job. Everyone except his boss, Pepe LeFleur. At this point, it's Pepe's responsibility to fix this mess.

If he doesn't, get rid of both of them.

"Have to keep perspective here. As tough as this will probably be down the stretch, this is almost exactly what I think most honest observers would have expected coming into this season. An uneven team, filled with young talent, that we hoped would show signs that they can build a contender around in the coming years. As tough as today was, I still think they're in a good spot looking foward.
If they completely revamp what they're doing on defense.
Go Pack."

As i posted I thought after pre season this was at best an average team and they would win 6 games, 7 tops.
Unfortunately I'm predicting the same thing next year. What you see in Love is who he is he is not going to get better with age. Thus, he will waste the talent of our receivers due to lack of long ball and inaccuracies throwing. Two things he did not have in college either.

Someone (Some brave sports reporter) should ask Joe Barry what he intends to do after he is fired from his third failure as a defensive coordinator. Or they could ask MLF WHY he chose Barry knowing his track record and after seeing his recent performance why he should still have a job under him.

After the pre season my evaluation was this was a six win, maybe seven win team at best. I didnt judge it on youth like many others because J Jefferson lit up the league as a rookie receiver how did anyone know whether I new guys werent play makers too?
I judged it on lack of free agent acquisitions to fill needed holes on defense. Lack of speed at linebacker. Lack of experience at QB albeit the guy is not a rookie, hes been here three years, I expect something.
As of now I say based on all the teams I watch on red zone and other channels, this is an average team who played an average schedule and has a below average grade to show for it.
The Vikes, our nemesis lost two starters at running back this year. Yesterday they played a fourth stringer up put up 129 yards. they come up with players and we make do with two guys who one is always hurt and only played six games and the other guy is an only average back who doesnt have break away speed or the ability to catch the ball but this is alright with the coaches. Two guys and a practice squad assortment if needed.
That is the real problem with this team. they've accepted mediocre players at key positions because they came cheap. Murphy doesnt give a rats ass about another super bowl, they care about making money.
The packers are concerned about money more then anything to do with the team. Sad the fans dont see it that way but this team is not going to be older, more mature and light it up next year, expect about the same as this year. The lions are a very young team. the Vikes are a very young team. the bears are a very young team.
If the pack arent the bottom of the NFC north next year I would be shocked.

MLF says poor coaching is part of the problem...

Someone needs to fire him and J. Barry now or else we'll look like the C. Panthers pretty soon.

The young talent is showing up. Its the defense's soft zones, bizarre concepts, and cowardly play calls that are costing us.

I couldn't stop laughing after your melt down Nags, I felt your pain but we knew what was coming, I have to watch film to see what the problem is, maybe someone should run an hour of film with nothing but Joe Barry on it and have him watch it, do you think he would see the problem then? Nope he would just say its a communication problem!
