Gut Reactions: Packers almost forget to beat the Eagles

  • Congrats to Aaron Rodgers! 1st player in NFL history to record five seasons with at least 35 TD passes.
  • It was crazy how wide open guys were on some of those plays in the 2nd quarter.
  • What's up Kingsley Keke?
  • The entire defensive front did a fantastic job rushing with discipline and ensuring Wentz had nowhere to run.
  • That first TD catch by Davante was just fantastic.
  • MVS with body catch drop. Use your hands buddy. Brutal.
  • JK Scott is fine. But the Packers need better than fine.
  • That throw out of the endzone to Davante from Rodgers made me see god.
  • I love that counter play with the TE out front.
  • Look at Rodgers blocking getting in the way
  • Giving up a TD on 4th and 18 is so on brand for Pettine.
  • This team has zero killer instinct.
  • Aaron Jones is a weapon.
  • Preston with the pressure, Savage with an incredible diving pick. *chefs kiss*
  • I love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

Draft or acquire better LBs and safeties to fill and tackle. Summers and Burks are pathetic. Greene not good laterally. With Reagor back there you have to punt away from this guy and pin it near the sidelines. This guy Menenga has to go. After the magnificent TD run by A.Jones, squibb kick the damn ball.

For sure--what exactly is the ST coach there for if he's not instructing the kickers how to handle certain situations?

The ladies on coverage are lanes wide. I am at a loss to explain multiple vacated lanes. To me that’s STs 101.

Is Scott the worst tackling punter ever? Help the man please. That’s not a record he wants surely?

Yeah, I am not anti-Scott (I think he actually has exceptional leg talent), but he is definitely the stereotypical punter- timid, not a football player.

We've been spoiled with a long line of kickers and punters in GB that have all been fearless about sticking their nose in a play and making physical stops without hesitation when called upon.

Scott is either a complete coward, doesn't have any idea how to tackle, or he's not being held accountable for allowing returners past him. Two of the three are directly on coaching; and even personal attitude is a reflection of coaching to a great extent. Maybe everyone is right about the ST coach.

Say it again, go sign Johnny Townsend from KC practice squad. He's a Gator stud who punted well for Gruden in LA and will make those tackles. His brother Tommy is the starting KC punter and they signed Johnny in case Tommy or Butker go down for Covid. Smart.

GB tried to hire a respected Dolphins ST coach in Darren Rizzi but lowballed him and although they ultimately increased the offer to meet his asking price by that time he turned GB down.

So GB hired a fired Browns ST assistant and we shouldn’t be surprised that you get what you pay for, as the saying goes.

Find a punter who can punt really well, but also is never afraid to make a tackle. I remember Mason Crosby being able to do it not long ago as the last man to stop a touchdown on a kickoff return. Scott does everything he can to avoid any contact.

We never should have allowed the punt return. Kick it out of bounds.

Offense did a poor job of clock killing with two three and outs.

Aside from the 10 points allowed, they held Philly under 280 yards. They got 7 sacks. Savage's pick was an incredible athletic feat made possible by more pressure from Preston Smith.

Defense was pretty good today, IMO.

Yes. And that is this d at its best. They will give up yards but will get the sacks. Earlier in the year this team was last in pressures. That was the biggest issue, bigger than the run d. Get the pressure, get the sacks, well be alright. Who cares if they get a few first downs before they have to punt? Does field positiion truly matter that much to this offense?? It sure as hell didnt when we started in our own endzone. One pass to davante, 1st n 10 from the 50.

You seem to forget it was 23 16 and held them to a 3 and out before the aaron jones run. The d was not perfect. But special teams was the issue today. The d played some damn good ball. Besides 4th and 18. Which will not be remembered like 4th n 26. Cus the d held up when it mattered, THEN aaron jones scored, and then we won.

Wenis:

GB defense gave up 10 points. Thought this was a valiant defensive effort. Savage also got the INT after the incredible Aaron Jones 77 yard TD run
where 7 Philadelphia Eagles missed 7 tackles on 1 play on the scamper resulting in another GB win.

Wenis-

The Green Bay Packers defense had 7 sacks against the Philadelphia Eagles in case
you missed the game. And 6 tackles for loss.

Aaron Rodgers almost had a perfect passer rating against the Eagles defense hitting 8 different packer receivers.

Maybe make a post about the Eagles defense?
Pack D held there own today.

Agreed. MVS got the job done, no doubt. But it was nothing special. The Flat Earth Society, err MVS Fan Club, getting all over it is something I just don't get. He's approaching Janis-levels of unwarranted praise. A few weeks back he was praised for beating a LB in coverage and someone wearing the other uniform committing a penalty so people would talk about something other than his killer fumble. He tied his shoes well too. And that is nothing special either.

I get that people want to support the team. But there comes a point where that means recognition that a player is unworthy of being on it. We're at that point with MVS, who is in year 3 now and has shown the same thing in each of the first 2---tremendous speed and a penchant for what is charitibly described as inconsistent production.

He still scares the shit out of dèfenses. The bears double teamed him. The bears double teamed an inconsistent player because of his speed, while davante adams was on the field. He is worthy of being on this team right now, his ability is arguably the reason we beat the jaguars. He will break out of this slump. The difference in year 3 is he already started hot, slumped and got hot again. That to me proves he can adjust. Year 1 and 2 he slumped and never came back. Hes just a streaky player. Like a 3 point shooter. Even if hes not hot, he can still keep the d honest and space the floor. And open it up for davante, lazard and tonyan. If the packers find a better floor spacer then yeah he is expendable. But right now his role is not as simple just catching balls. With that being said, for us to win 3 playoff games and a superbowl, he most likely will have to get right. Luckily he has the lions panthers and titans and bears to do it against. All of which dont have strong corners except kyle fuller.

- ST is a real problem.

- Isn't it awesome that we're 9-3, 3 games ahead of the Vikings and second seed in the NFC, and we had the luxury to draft for the future with a lottery ticket that might give us four decades of legendary QB play? Seriously, we won by 2 scores and you're complaining about the draft?

Two coaches need to be replaced next year. ST's and DC. The Packers have to commit to hiring a top notch coach at each position, even though it may cost them more than they like. In the past, especially on ST's, they've had a chance a really good coaches, but have balked at paying them. So they settle for mediocre, and end up with sub-par. The new DC has to be able to motivate players, and get them to attack in a controlled manner. I know that Jim Schwartz is not a nice guy, but he's a terrific motivator and coordinator. I want a tough guy, someone who will come in and let the defense know a new sheriff is in town. And it's time for the posse to saddle up or look for greener pastures.

Good point, Thegravedigger, that the defense did come through in stopping the Eagles on the possession before Jones reeled off his spectacular run.
That's what we have to hope for in the playoffs -- but then again Hurts is a raw rookie while Wilson is a savvy vet, and even Murray would have a couple of seasons of experience.
The other thing is that the Packers defense was bad in the first quarter-- with the time of possession, I think, 11:33 minutes for the Eagles out of 15 minutes.
I'd still make the daring move of removing Pettine right now, because I think the Packers need to be somewhat daring to win the Super Bowl this season.
If there is anyone at all available on staff or elsewhere who could step in as defensive coordinator immediately, then it's time for Pettine to go.
The replacement wouldn't have to completely change the system for the defense this season, but mostly tweak it with more aggressiveness and more discipline.

With this offense, im okay with the defense giving up some yards, as long as they dont give up 7. As long as this offense keeps on cruising. The main difference in this defense now opposed to earlier in the year is the pressure. 7 sacks, and a bunch more hits and hurries. Earlier in the season, we were last in nfl in pressures. Last season, we were first. If this d gives up 3 first downs, then gets a 3rd down sack, thats a win. I see this defense progressing, and i also havent seen the dreaded pettine 3 man rush lately, which tells me he and they are adjusting. I would hold off on the pettine firing, at least for now. If raven greene is hurt against the lions, hopefully we see more kamal martin and less will redmond, which will also be a telling sign on if pettine is willing to adjust from his urge to be in dime all the time. My biggest questions about mike pettine are is he willing to adjust? I see some willingness, hopeful to see more.

Looked to me like he got in the way more than did anything special. Including getting in Jones' way from about the Pack 45 to the 50. Once he got out of the way, he cleaned up a guy that was already back-pedaling because Jones made over-run. Bakh was right there to do that as well.

Jones was remarkable on that play. The blocking at the LoS was remarkable. MVS was not.

Hello to you, HankScorpio, I think getting in the way may be the secret to good downfield blocking.
It avoids penalties for illegal blocks, while allowing the ball carrier room to maneuver.
(I think good special teams also would involve more getting in the way and less of a need to block from behind or grab from the side.)
I didn't see what MVS did at midfield, but he looked great to me for the last twenty yards or so as far as helping Jones into the end zone. It seems he negated two or three defenders by getting in the way.
That MVS was down there with maximum effort -- after things didn't go his way at other times in the game -- is a huge plus in itself as far as his character.
P.S. To the naysayers against MVS, yes he should have caught that deep ball.
Then again, Davante dropped a touchdown pass that, while difficult, could have been had if he grasped it cleanly at the top of his jump before the defender reached in.
(Lazard dropped one, as well.)
I think it was year four that Davante really took off.
MVS in in year three. He's already good; going to get better; and may become a star.
Let's support him as fans to reach his potential, rather than getting in his way with rash criticism.

Even at MVS's low contract levels, maximum effort is the expectation. Every WR can run. The standards I have extend beyond trying hard and being able to run. And yes, every pass catcher will have the occasional drop. The issue at hand is frequency of them. MVS is too high, Adams is not. That's pretty easy to see.

Generally speaking, for my money, 800 yards is the benchmark for a productive year from a WR. Adams exceeded that in year 3 and 4 before truly spectacular numbers in year 5. MVS will need about 70/game over the final 4 to hit that mark. He's more than capable of that but I'd bet against it if I was betting. He has two defining traits--tremendous speed and inconsistency. THe latter tends to cancel out the former.

It's nothing personal with the guy. I felt for him over the ridiculous reaction on social media after his fumble va Indy. If anything, my issue is with the Packer fans that constantly prop him up over marginal accomplishment--such as beating a LB in coverage or running between 2 defenders while Aaron Jones pulled some magic.

It's amazing how quickly a blowout can turn into a close game. I think the most frustrating part is that they give us sustained looks at true greatness, particularly on the offensive side of the ball, only to mysteriously sputter out for a drive here and there. Couple that with inexplicably soft defense on 3rd/4th and long plus horrendous special teams, and this team gives you opportunities to beat it.

Credit, though, to Jones with the dagger TD and then Preston + Savage on the interception to close out the game. We've seen this team forget how to close out games before. First in the division with only one game back from the Saints (who still have to play KC in a couple weeks) is a pretty good place to be in at this point in the season! Go Pack Go!

More worried about ST at this point. J. K. Scott is a mediocre punter and this is the second punt-return TD we've given up in 4 weeks. Insanity. Since Ervin can't stay healthy and we don't have anyone else on the roster who can field kicks, hopefully the recently signed Austin can give us some life in that regard. Even Crosby has missed two XP attempts.

I don't like Pettine either and this defense does often play soft, but giving up only 10 points in 4 quarters is a win no matter how you slice it, particularly when our offense is good for 30 every week.

Another solid 3 quarters of a game. Special teams coverage really needs help. 4th and 18 for a TD why not?

The Packers played well on both sides of the ball but 4th qtr lapses again allow the opponent to stick around.

Rodgers to Adams may have reached another level. Aaron Jones with a spectacular TD run. DL and edge LBs played much better. The Smiths plus Gary all had a strong game.
OL played well again against a good DL.

Nice win, #2 seed. On to Detroit. Thanks, Since ‘61

The usual hiccups with the second-half defense and special teams, but:

The O-line was superb and so was AR with his pinpoint accuracy; Davante was great, especially with the fancy footwork along the sideline for AR's 400th TD; P. Smith had another strong game with a nice TFL and timely QB pressure which led to the game-sealing INT by Savage.

Aaron Jones: I don't care what anyone says about RBs being disposable and so forth; this guy is an integral part of our offense as far as running, receiving, and blocking. He needs to be re-signed!

Totally agree Split Pea. Everything
Starts with the OL. Rodgers hitting 400 TD’s was fun to be apart of.

Letting Aaron Jones out of the building would be a grave mistake.

Play makers are not easy to find
(I get the AJ is a RB argument-
but don’t buy it).

Offense is geared toward
Rodgers Jones and Adam’s.

Guy from Chiefs 1st round pick Clyde Edwards Hillair (spelling??)! Reminds me of Aaron Jones.

Every team in the league is looking for Clyde Edwards, Aaron Jones or Alvin Kamara. These type of players are very difficult to replace.

It was a headscratcher the 4th and 18 play. But i think using the word atrocius was a little strong. They got pressure all day, and were decent against the run. This defense is improving and are making plays when they need to. The special teams tho. Wtf man. Get your shit together. If ty summers doesnt make that play.... Kirksey needs to be replaced. Two of the Packers best secondary players lost contact because they got drawn in to a QB who broke contain. It happens. I counted at 5 times when Rodgers sucked a good Eagles secondary in when he broke containment, it happens. Martin and Barnes are not assignment sure, if they were both would be playing on the field. 10 points scored by this Eagles offense, good day by the Packers defense.

I get what you mean. I thought injuries early and Covid-19 did more damage to both players field time than Kirksey being a veteran. The other is teams are now starting to pull more unscouted looks during games. Having a veteran makes a difference. (Still, Kirksey look a bit beefy now compared to earlier this season. I like to know how many guys on the roster really had Covid-19 this season. After watching what happened to the Ravens, well glad I'm not a Steelers fan...)

The Eagles scored 16 total points today, 6 of which the Packers' defense wasn't on the field for.

One must consider that the Eagles are averaging 21.2 points per game in 2020 against professional NFL defenses.

So, the logical conclusion here is that the Packers defense played the Eagles offense better than most other NFL defenses have so far it 2020, and you don't fully appreciate what a good or bad NFL defense actually gives up.

Still, the circumstances were far different with AR, who some thought would be drafted number one overall. Love was and is a head-scratcher.

Even in Rodgers' first season as a starter- one he personally played fairly well in (although the team didn't over all), people were still calling him a bum.

Mostly because he wasn't Brett Favre.

It amazes me how sometimes people don't learn from the past. You don't know, till you know. Despite Love not playing his rookie year, he may end up being a more valuable pick than any other this decade. It all depends on how things turn out when it's his time. Ridiculing the pick because he hasn't played in 2020 is so short-sighted.

Philly took Reagor @ 21. He is just starting to get his mojo after being injured earlier. There was debate between Jefferson or Lamb after Ruggs with his 4.2 speed as to which guy was better. Jeudy was over-drafted. Spielmann made the great pick. Jerry and Big Mike thought Lamb was the real deal. The only chance to move for one of the top guys was to get up to #20. Jefferson is so smooth for a rookie, just a player.

you're right about my comment about Jefferson beign irrelevant. Jefferson went at 21. The vikes picked again at 25. Gute traded up to 26. I want to believe he traded up to 26 to get aiyuk, assuming the queens had their wr already. But then they traded 25 to the niners. Gute was then caught at 26 with his pants down and just took the "bpa" on their board. Just my theory.

He made the move up to bag either Aiyuk or Love, we don't know his thinking ,but they had their eye on Aiyuk since his 2018 season at AZ State. Vikes at #22 from the Diggs trade to Buffalo and the #25 was expendable. Spielman had a great off-season killing some CAP and still getting a blue chip in the deal. The trade down with Lynch got him Gadney as a starting CB then the three pick to Danzler for his other starting CB.

Aaron Jones, I love you man! I was really sweating in a game I felt like I FINALLY wasn't going to sweat with 7 minutes in the 4th quarter.

Shawn Mennenga has NO BUSINESS coaching in the NFL. That's 2 games this year against inferior opponents a punt return game them life. And for the love of God, please bring in a punter. JK Scott is 6'6", if he just CUTS the returner BOTH times they go down or at least it doesn't look like your dress tripped you up.

Mike Pettine actually looks like a very competent coach when compared to Mennenga.

Keke looks like a solid rotational DL to me, which is all you can reasonably expect from a 5th round guy. The arrow is pointing up with him, as well as Gary and Savage.

It goes without saying that Jenkins was an outstanding 2nd round pick.

I'm still holding on to hope that Sternberger will become a player that can at least match what Tonyan is doing this year. With TEs, the 3 year wait is a very big deal, IMO.

Hollman held up ok when forced into duty a few weeks back. Summers is a core ST player, although I'm not sure that is a positive, given how bad the STs have played.

I like the up arrow on the 2019 draft production.

Another great offensive performance against a pretty good D. Love to see the running late.

The special teams are just brutal. It is going to cost them in a close game. At this point you no longer look for a big play from the Packers on special teams, you just hope for no disasters.

Next Pettine has to bookmark the Cleveland-Tennessee game. After the Packers dispatch the Lions and Panthers, Pettine has to really get to work and learn from that game.

Btw, What the hell is it with us on 4th and long? I kind of expected it. Pettine should know better.

Not on Pettine. Both DB knew better but got sucked in. Two of the Packers blue chips screwed up in breaking coverage. They knew...

Remember back in Adams' second season in '15, he was getting destroyed on the blogs, message boards, etc., for having a dud of a season? (And TT was getting destroyed too for drafting him?) He's a perfect example of why you need to give players a couple of years before calling them a bust.

TT had plenty of busts. I can name many if you need reminding. But yeah I had to eat some crow on Adams.

Good stuff, Todd. I'm thinking of MVS and ESB as among those with whom to be patient.
Davante dropped a difficult be gettable touchdown catch tonight; Lazard had a drop, as well; and Aaron Jones went so far as to drop a pitch out.
Without being blind to mistakes from young guys, it seems better with promising players to error on the side of encouragement rather than discouragement.

They tried to boost mvs confidence with that reverse. Didnt quite work out.... The lions corners should hopefully do the trick...

ESB had a drop though it was a difficult catch. Really beautiful throw to ESB, one I've seen Jordy come up with time and again.

Radom thoughts: Me on 4 and 18. Protect the end zone, don't get sucked in. NO!!!!!!!!! &$%#@&!!!!!!!!! Offense needs to hold on and burn clock, BUT NOOOO one giant brain fart of a series, good job Rodgers-MLF. Punt...... Eagles touchdown on a nice set return play. DIE MENNENGA DIE NOW. (GET THE DAMN COMMIE FLU JUST GO AWAY) STUPID MENTAL MISTAKES ON ST GOT THE EAGLES BACK IN THIS GAME...... On defense the Packers shut down a dysfunctional Eagles offense and crushed their offensive line for most of the game. Packer D gave up 10 points, 10 points is a very good day no matter who the Packers play. Packers offense...was not good early against a good Eagles defense. Skill players were off early today. On the other hand Adams was a monster against a very good Eagles secondary. Had over and under cover all day. On the other hand the O Line kept Rodgers clean for most of the day and dominated a good Eagle front 7 for most of the game. Injuries are starting to pile up now, do the Packers have enough depth to counter. Good win against a tough proud Eagles team. I (really) need a (root) beer....

Never underestimate the ability of this offense to score points. Never underestimate the ability of this defense to give up points. J. K Scott tried to fake out another punt returner today. My wife implied only Super Bowls matter. Aaron Rodgers is the GOAT.

Look at it this way...we’re complaining about Pettine’s prevent defense whereas two years ago we were complaining about McCarthy’s prevent OFFENSE! I will gladly take this season’s discussion.

That said, I am much more concerned about the ST performance than the defense. The defense was less prepared to deal with Hurts at QB than they were for Wentz. That’s not unusual. It’s annoying but, IMO, not so much as the ST performance over the past few weeks.

Why don't they fire the DC and make the Outide LB coach the DC. The guy is just an idiot and never learns from his/players mistakes or how to play to the players strengths.

Extra special teams. Unreal. Need to get some different personnel out there. You would think their arguably best open field tackler besides jaire, raven greene would be able to make that tackle on the sideline though. Might have to put amos and some starters out there in the playoffs if this doesnt get fixed. Jeff janis is out there... Wheres this teams travis jervey? Its a good problem to have i suppose. Id rather be bitching about special teams coverage than ya know, shitty defense, or losing. Cus the d is making progress. And we won. Early in the season, p smith, amos, savage, and even z besides when he got sacks were having down years. Theyve all turned it around. Even dean fuckin lowry had a good game. King is back n playing well, jaire is a beast, raven greene makes plays every week. Kirksey is an issue but other than that the d is starting to put it together. They pressured wentz, and then adjusted and stayed in their lanes for hurts. Miles sanders didnt do jack shit. On the short passes, amos and jaire closed in and got tackles. Their was a roll out play by hurts where amos came at hurts, dropped back in coverage, then came back and made the tackle, just one of the many good plays by him and this d. I love this team.

Daguara and Lovette injured, their two FB?HB types for SP teams. Burks afraid of contact, etc, poor lane discipline by Summers? 4th and 18, just play cover two and rush five.

It's virtually impossible to judge safety (or even DB) play on modern NFL telecasts, so it's hard to say how his overall game is improving without viewing in person or seeing the all-22 film, but it's nice to see Savage grab another athletic pick today.

It feels like he's building confidence to go make plays the last few weeks, and talk about the right time of year to see it start rolling. I hope his angles are also starting to improve. He has not played sound defense overall in his short career. Here's hoping it's all falling into place.

Philly looked like a different team with Hurts at QB. He was much tougher to defend than Wentz.
The offense was very good again today. But the defense will cost them in the postseason.
Throwing away big leads in the second half is a very bad habit. It is now an established pattern that the defense will cave and let leads slip away when they should be shutting the door. Theoretically, it should be easier to play good defense when they have a big lead. They know the other team is going to pass, so they can tee off on pass rush. But the opposite happens. Poor pass rush and disorganized secondary equals blown lead. Luckily, Jones long td run stopped a near collapse.

Special-teams is a total disaster right now but a very nice win considering Eagles are playing for their lives.
Some great plays made on both sides of the ball for us very entertaining to watch as long as you don't watch the commercials if you know what I mean.
Go Packers!
