Gut Reactions: Packers beat Texans 28-26

Aaron gives his gut reactions from the Packers first preseason game of 2019.

  • Good to be back
  • DeShone Kizer is just too inconsistent
  • Kingsley Keke is a player
  • Ty Summer started hot then seemed to kind of lose his legs as the game went on. That said, really promising start from the rookie.
  • Kumerow is making this team.
  • Lane Taylor was the only starter along the offensive line to play tonight. Have to wonder if he's trying to stave off Elgton Jenkins.
  • Nice night from JK Scott, esp on the punt that ended up as a touchdown. Returner could never get a read on the ball.
  • Tim Boyle had a really nice night. Lots of folks will focus on the TD pass to Lazard, but he had a throw on a bootleg ealier with a guy in his face that was really sweet.
  • Tough night for J'Mon Moore, but I'm glad he ended up finding the endzone.
  • That was a hell of a touchdown catch by Allen Lazard, and the flex on Lonnie Johnson was even better.
  • Nice to see a defense creating turnovers.
  • Ka’dar Hollman took advantage of a poor throw by Joe Webb, but his interception was sweet. Great job jumping in front of the receiver and taking the ball away.
  • Montravious Adams did some nice things tonight.
  • Dexter Williams is going to be a weapon in this offense.
  • If this team looks like they don't practice tackling, it's because they don't.
  • I can already tell I'm going to hate coaches being able to challenge pass interference.
  • Time to have all the beer.
  • Go Pack.

Lazard, Summers, and Dexter Williams caught my eyes. Boyle did well too! Kizer was okay! Concerned for Moore based on his play. Kumerow did well!

Want to see quite a bit more of Lazard as impressed.

Congratulations LF for 1st victory. May you have many more!

Been saying this the whole off-season. I loved that James Lofton was doing the game, he told every Packers fan and the media exactly all they needed to know about Moore. There is Zero upside on this guy, there is stiff competition in camp, and several guy's I'd like to see on this roster other than Moore. Terrible hands, the dude is not an NFL receiver I want on the field in a big game or situation. Drops get you beat, period. He even bobbled the TD pas, almost to the point of not having control. Just barely got his act together of like 5-6 steps. Terrible WR in whats turning out to be a deep room. Cut bait and fish, fling! He's outta here! Wouldn't waste any more reps on this dude.

No one seems to have noticed Chandon Sullivan. Kid played well tonight and made a few plays including and Int and a sack he should've had on Webb, but for some unknown reason let him go. Overall I thought he was impressive along with Hollman, Summers, Dexter, and Shepperd.

Taryn, first of all, thanks much for the referral to bilasports.
However, I got a red rectangle with the words "Dark Mode" inside of it -- so I left the site as a matter of caution.
Also, in the little exploring I did, I couldn't find the Packers game.
Any extra help is appreciated. I'm somewhat of an old codger and not adept at the computer.

No, it just makes the screen dark or light around the edges. Did you see the games listed..if you saw MLB, tap the menu and then select NFL..scroll down to a game and select it...then you may need to scroll down a little until you see the black box with the arrow...click the arrow and enjoy the game. This is on a phone...I use a desktop with 3 TV sets hooked up...I can actually watch all the games at once....I love the Internet.

LaFleur and Gutey can't deny this guy anymore and continue to give Kizer first dibbs as backup. I fully expect LaFleur to put in Boyle next week after Rodgers leaves. He's earned it damnit!!

Just a footnote . I spent my Summers in Algoma (go Wolves) and on many foggy nights I listen to that big Red foghorn belt out its welcome home blare....That supposedly fog horn noise as referred to by the new coach sounded sounded more like the War of the Worlds alien sound. I'm not overly concerned about it, as most of the players on this defense came in being good tacklers. I actually kind of agree with the tact to prevent injuries and keep their players healthy and available for the regular season.

It's just not like the Lombardi days anymore. There is far more power and force in today's game. Not taking anything away from those players of yesteryear. I've often thought about that, the real drilling that went on, but players are so much bigger and faster today, that I am OK with this.

Random impressions:

Shepherd looks a really interesting proposition. I Want him on the roster.
Kumerow just catches it.
Williams has a great burst but is nowhere near as elusive as Jones.
Kizer got better as the half went on, played really well on scoring drive.
Boyle played against weaker opposition but looked good. Love his decisiveness.
Summers looked gassed later on. Impressive earlier.
Sheldon might have some promise
Ento does have potential.
Redmond looked good, better than Jamerson
Hollman is a steal.
Sullivan again had a good interception too. Hope he wasn’t hurt at the end.
Tackling is just not good.
Moore looks like his confidence is shot.
Was not impressed by right side of starting O line.
D lines need to be able to hold the edge once in a while.
Hope Burks is OK, that didn’t look good. We need more ILBs I think if he is out. Crawford and Summers running on empty by the end. Bolton did not impress.
We aren’t going to find significantly better QBs than Boyle and Kizer. Wilkins is not going to unseat either.

Coldworld, I gave you a thumbs up just because you spelled WR Shepherd's name correctly. Others will too as he continues to break open, catch everything and show toughness holding on to the ball. He follows the lineage of Allison and Kumerow as FA WRs that outperform draft picks and force their way onto the roster. He's been a top notch baller for four years but got little respect from talent evaluators because he is on smaller side and played Div 1 FCS football. He looks like a gem and has good chance of not only bypassing Moore (already did IMO) but making roster as slot receiver and PR/KR.

I agree with almost all of it, except for Wilkins. He was playing behind our 3rd or 4th stringers up front, and doesn't get a ton of reps with 1s and 2s. I actually think he can beat out both Boyle and Kizer. He didn't have a good night, had some really bad drops, (Hall comes to mind) and had very limited action compared to the other two.

Summer came in at the 8:00 mark for the injured Burks, and did not leave the field until the end of the 4th Quarter. He WAS gassed, and it was his first game at this level. I know he wasn't happy with his performance, and I'm confident he will only improve.

You are right in that Hollman was a STEAL, as were many others, including Ty Summers, Dexter Williams, Kingsley Keke, Jace Sternberger who we didn't get to see, and Elgton Jenkins. I firmly believe this may go down as one of Green Bay's best drafts.

If a player keeps doing it, it seems futile to argue that he can’t. It’s very like Allison. Actions speak louder than testing or analysts. They both just seem to get open and catch the ball. Can’t argue with that. But Shepherd should have a train too. That kid is impressively sudden and athletic and also seems to just make plays.

Was glad to see the Shepherd TD on replay.
I'm getting the impression that the "impressively sudden and athletic" description you offered about him may be unique among all the talented receivers we have competing for jobs.
If he's quick and elusive and electric in a way that is special among the others, I hope we keep him.
I don't remember the Packers having such a spark in all my years as a fan going back to the early 1970s.

4th and 10. A client of mine. an actor from CA I worked for told me that he was the originator of the Kumerow looking like Jesus deal. He told me he was on Packers.com and said Kumerow "looks like Jesus and plays like Jordy". It caused quite the stir there and my client was reprimanded for saying it can you believe it. About a month later I was reading here and Nagler referred to him as "Touchdown Jesus" and I just laughed. The Jesus comparison stuck and that is a good thing. I love Kumerow as well. I said yesterday I would rank him the no. 2 receiver based on the Rodgers' trust factor and I stand by that. I mean when you think about it, does it really hurt anyone that this guy actually looks like Jesus and plays like Jordy? I kind of think it's a cool thing. I bet Kumerow doesn't mind the comparison.

I agree, Kizer played predominately against a mix of first and second stringers, while Boyle played mostly third string and practice squad guys.
Both Kizer and Boyle posted passer ratings over 100 and somehow people make the scenario out as Boyle is the second coming of Mark Brunell.
Both Kizer and Boyle played well, not just Boyle.

Well if Moore continues to give his qb's reasons not to throw to him due to his inability to catch the football and if Boyle continues to play at the high level he played tonight, I would have to agree with you. Right now I would say Moore has a higher chance of not making the team than Kizer does. They still might keep three qb's but I do know if I am a scout in the stands watching this game I am drooling over the thought of the Packers letting Boyle go. On several catches Moore looked like he was trying to trap the ball against his body instead of catching it with his hands. Resulted in an incompletion every time he tried it. Haven't heard that he was doing that in practice so not sure why it showed up in the game. Even the announcers spent some time talking about his improper hand positions on a couple of incompletions. Not a look that will help him make the 53.

Shepard's grab was beautiful - high in the air twisting his body and snatching the ball with his hands. Hung onto it after a big hit by a defender. This kid could make the 53 if he keeps that up.

I think Moore is over thinking due to lack of confidence. In essence he is too worried to let his instincts take over. I agree, he seems different in practice yet he did the same on Family Night.

When a player can obviously do something but fails to when the lights are on, the issue isn’t practice it is sports psychology. That said, he either sorts it out in the next game or two or he is not on the roster despite all his other gifts.

Spot on comment Coldworld. I haven't seen any practices, but all of the comments were positive about him catching the ball. In games he just looks unsure and reverts to trying to trap the ball. On his TD catch, he looked angry and just snatched the ball out of the air with his hands, so the capability is there.

I am not sure he can overcome this in the next few weeks, but I would be happy if the Packers could sneak him onto the practice squad. The guy has great physical talents and some work with a sports psychologist might help him immensely.

I agree. But there were some formations on defense I didn’t agree with that didn’t exactly give him favorable circumstances...which would be a different discussion. The defense generated turnovers but they were highly incidental. In my lizard brain, turnovers are great ...but handling the LOS, playing soundly and tackling is what makes your team D good. I didn’t see much of that. Living and dying just on turnovers alone...I don’t think that’s sustainableThe eye test said that the run D was not that good. They also need to practice opposition scramble drills...course there were hardly any starters in and that could have been done by design also. I’ll have to watch it again, but those were my initial impressions on the D side. A guy named Sullivan can tackle and make plays though.

Savage dressed, but didn’t play. As for Gary he has quite the get off and there were a couple plays where he hurried Webb, but Webb is one elusive QB/WR. Gary will get home 6x this season is my prediction.

Winners:

1. Tim Boyle - If this guy is not the no. 2 qb this season they need to fire Gutey. Was borderline dominant tonight. Made all the throws long and short. What a night!! He passed Kizer tonight and isn't looking back!!

2. Ty Summers - I originally thought he reminded me of John Offerdahl. I have now changed that. He reminds me of Jack Lambert. Tackling machine. A killer. What a find by Gutey.

3. Montravius Adams - Impressive first move. Very active. Will make TT look good.

4. Raven Greene - Nice strip. Very active

5. Sullivan ? rookie db? Thought he made some nice plays. Nice Int.

6. Jake Scott - responsible most for that special teams td.

One negative. J'Mon Moore. He had three throws by Boyle in the end zone all for easy td's. One last week and two tonight. He dropped two of those three and the two he did catch tonight he still managed to bobble them. I don't know man. It's not looking good for this guy. A receiver needs to be able to catch that ball. I give Boyle credit for still going to him but wow this is getting tough. He's in a mental funk he can't seem to get out of.

3.

I will give EQ a shout for gathering The punt fumble. Not bad for a guy who couldn’t play special teams last year.

Re Boyle. Different level of opposition than Kizer. Like to see them play him in first half and vice versa. Probably not next week if Rodgers is going to play I suppose though.

Dash has returned rejuvenated, for sure, but I don't think he can sustain this intensity. Being a Seer requires a huge amount of psychic energy, and Dash isn't getting any younger. So, enjoy him while you can. Soon the headaches and nosebleeds will take their toll and he'll be back at the card table looking to fit the next corner piece in a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle.

- I haven't been so impressed with the middle of the roster in maybe a decade.
- MLFs vanilla/show nothing offense is 10x more interesting than McCarthy's regular season offense.
- The Packers still don't tackle well.
- Montavious Adams looks great, blowing things up in the backfield and setting up others to clean up the mess he makes
- How on earth does Gary weight 270 lbs? He looks and moves like a 230 lbs guy. Not happy seeing him quit in backside pursuit, especially not when he is otherwise making very little impact on the field.
- Ty Summers looks good, which is great. Because, Oren Burks must be Italian, he's "Fragilie"
- Kadar Hollman can cover.
- If Kumerow is not on the Roster I will ****ing loose my ****.
- Elgon Jenkins lined up wrong on the Extra point but he can block.
- Raven Greene is representing 36.
- Moore still can't catch with his hands, he's a body catcher. Cut him. The other WRs are too talented.
- Kizer might be able to play in this offense, maybe.
- Punt coverage guys still can't stay in their lanes.
- what a punt by Scott and recovery by ESB.

I did not notice Gary taking plays off. I will have to review. I saw him hustling.

Wish they could wrap up Webb, but it occurs to me that you can’t hit the QB below the knees now. That probably cut 5 sacks from Webb if I’m correct and they didn’t wrap up for that reason. Sure hate that rule if true.

The O line couldn't run block until it was 4th stringers out there and the D line didn't penetrate much until it was 4th stringers out there.

Is there still a spot for a situational pass rusher than can play special teams like Gilbert?

Lazard and Shepherd made some case for more looks tonight.

They made Joe Webb look like Michael Vick scrambling. Tackling was weak

I thought the Texans' 2nd string was slightly better. The packers' 3rd string was a bit better, and the guys getting released (+4th string) were even.

Moore has stone hands. Tried to come up with a nickname for him but failed. J'Mon Moore "Drops" was the closest. Even when he caught it, he bobbled the ball.

I think people are being harsh on Gary already.. although he didn't really do anything flashy. He showed he is that athletic freak as advertised.. he had a couple hurries and seemed to be ran away from schematically.

Tweet by Jason B. Hirschhorn - ".... Rashan Gary blew by his blockers but hasn't connected in part because the Texans seem to scheme away from him..."

I felt as if this was part of the angst againist Gary. I noticed a lot of attention was shown towards him. He still had opportunities though, but I wouldn't worry. After actually having his first live reps out there, it seems as if a lot of you were expecting Khalil Mack in Gary's first preseason game (or snap for that matter).. give him a chance to see what he has, needs to correct, and put it on the field. Also gotta remember it's their first real game in over half a year, conditioning for a rookie is still MUCH at play. When teams start to have to block both the Smiths, Clark and Fackrell.. Gary should be able to capitalize a lot more easier.. maybe even giving him the confident boost to start to make those splash plays.

I think Gute stole Hollman, Summers and maybe even Lancaster. Hollman is sticky.. Summers started out on fire, but seemed to be sprinting through the marathon, started to look gassed but has real potential. Lancaster is just a slippery brick wall, good for 2-4 run stuffs a game and can even put a little pressure on the QB. Boyle even looked above OK. But.. just one exhibition game though, can't take TOO much from it.

Maybe so. The objective analysis of Gary's play against Houston is that it comports well with his scouting reports. He is a great athlete with enough tools to be a great player. How good he turns out to be (and when) depends on how much he can learn from Mike Smith and Montgomery.

I had to wait until the NFL network showed the game at 10pm Tucson time (and, of course, showed Seattle's end of game instead for the 1st 10 minutes of the Packers 1st quarter -so missed that) but my impressions were that the eye test are the D is not looking good against the run. Typical pre-season game and fun to see a lot of players who probably won't be on the 53. J'mon Moore looked to me to be a lost cause with zero confidence. He gets open but doesn't use his hands to catch, dropped a sure touchdown and juggled the one TD he did get. Too many other good receivers battling for his spot. Kizer and Boyle looked okay. I'm loving the hang time J.K. Scott puts on those punts! Overall a typically sloppy preseason game. Always nice for the team to get a "win" and still have plenty of teaching tape to go over.

I'm in agreement Moore will likely not (and shouldnt) make team. Possibly PS?

Liking Lazard and Shehperd. Liked Lazard on Special Teams as well. Cant keep both on 53 or can they?

1. Adams
2. Allison (is Allison at risk?)
3. MVS
4. ESB
5. Kumerow
6. Davis (or Shepherd)?
7. Lazard

I think Allison and Kumerow are similar players age wise, talent wise, but Kumerow impacts less against cap. Really a couple tough decisions coming up at WR barring injuries.

Thanks CW!

On eliptical at club (helps to not thinking about the cardio) and wasnt sure but assumed close about age.

In my mind Kumerow creates the biggest dilemma at WR. I like him but is he a luxury the Packers can keep? Take his age and minimal to no ST's ability, and fact he is at his peak now with minimal upside talent wise from here on out. Believe he has an injury history (correct me if wrong) vs several young rookie and 2nd year WR's currently battling it out like Lazard, Shepherd, and Moore.

Just dont know...

1st I think we saw the real Gary, all be it a tiny sample. He was criticised pre-draft in part by some as lazy, while others didn't see it. Why the disagreement? Having played a similar position in college I saw it right away last night. Overwhelmingly athletic players that can win their initial 1v1 easily like Gary have a pretty common problem. They can rush past, or be pushed passed the target. This becomes an even bigger problem if they're a high motor player. They get so far past the play they "look" lazy though they really are not. There are only 2 solutions for this & we've seen both. Either he must become SO dominant he can just go straight line to the target Classic example was Reggie (his club move is a perfect skill for Gary, a must master) and Mack. They simply overwhelm & attack straight line. The other is the quick closer. These guess, like a young Clay & especially Vaughn Miller, as so quick & sudden they can reclose any Gap like a leapord or cheeta. Don't think he's that sudden. Either way 1st key is slowing his mind but not his body down. Regardless the technique that's the indesputable 1st step. I have no doubt with our outstanding OLB coach & the Smiths he'll get all the teaching, encouragement & accountability he needs but his mind is all up to him. That's a 50/50 proposition, I couldn't do it.

On a side note: Lazard, Shepard, Looney and several DBs will make cut down excruciating. Love this draft

Well, bearing in mind it was the first preseason game and a bunch of starters for both teams weren't out there, I think it showed off some things...Dexter Williams for one. Im a big Irish fan, and we stole this guy. He should have gone in the 3rd or 4th round. Dude gets stronger as the game goes on. Jake K looked really good, as he did last preseason> Id love to see him make the squad. The young wide outs looked good, Lazard and Shepherd both stepping up....Now the not so good....JMon Caught a TD, but the drops, the sloppy routes. He didn't help himself. The other two guys drafted with him are way more polished at this point. I think that Lane Taylor might have gotten a JOL notice...only starter out there. Finally, backup quarterback. This position hasn't been good for a long time. Kizer is in his third year, and he is still not there. Granted, its his third coach, and the cream of the crop receivers weren't out there, but still. I don't think that Boyle is the answer either. Hoping that BG is out there taking a look to see if there isnt a better solution at back up quarterback to insure that if AR misses a game or two, we still have adequate quarterbacking. Problem with the current guys on the roster, neither is adequate. Young DBs looked good. All in all, I think things are progressing. GO PACK GO!!
