Gut Reactions: Packers beat Bears

Aaron gives his gut reactions from the Packers win over the Bears

  • #1 seed. LFG.
  • God I love watching the Packers beat the Bears
  • Did you know Dominique Dafney was a Packers player prior to this game?
  • A linebacker on MVS is suboptimal for the opposition
  • MVS wide open for a TD against a DB is suboptimal for the Packers
  • Love me some Robert Tonyan
  • Kevin King. Buddy. Hang on to the ball.
  • That boot play is the entire Chicago offense.
  • Jaire Alexander is an All Pro.
  • Kevin King. Buddy. It's 3rd and 3. Why are you 10 yards off?
  • Aaron Jone is so freaking good.
  • Adrian Amos loves playing Trubisky.
  • You'll hear a lot from some fans about the Packers coming up short post-bye week under LaFleur this week. You can safely ignore them.
  • Congrats to Davante Adams for breaking Sterling Sharpe's single season receptions record.
  • My god I love this team
  • The Bears Still Suck.
  • Super. Bowl.
  • Go Pack Go.

Congratulations Chicago. Your wildcard participant banner should look great in Soldier Field.

Love the Pack. MVS catch the effin ball so I can relax.

Such a chance to be a hero - and pfffff gone and now the game is tighter. In the same line - King catch the effin interception - 3 points off of the board at the end of the first half.

I respectfully disagree. At one point in the game it was 28-16. At this point the bears had 1 td and 3 field goals in 4 red zone trips. That 12 points is huge. The defense was given a short field many times and made several holds to keep chicago to FG's

Yes and no. The Bears aren't as good as GB and it is by a substantial degree. Chicago played exactly the game they needed to play to upset GB and GB did nothing to disrupt that game plan. AR threw three interception-worthy passes that could have changed the dynamics of this game.

The numbers agree by and large with you. 13 points against any NFL offense is a good result, 16 points if one includes the ST gift.

One needs to have supreme confidence in the offense to score, to be great in the red zone, to be able to sit for long periods of time and still come out and score the ball.

Hey it took 17 weeks for this d to show up in the red zone. That was a win. They gave up yards, but played good situational ball on d. Kevin king was their game plan in short passing situations. Every roll was to his side. He bent. But didnt break. He will continue to get tested.

I think King will benefit from the bye as much as anyone. Nagging groin injuries impair mobility. I’d have him and MVS wear out a jugs machine this week, but I think King was unsighted on that one.

Id say holding them to fgs was disrupting the game plan. I think pettines game plan was to let the bears do exactly what they did. Whether i agree or not is a different story. The bears got their inches on many 4th downs, until they didnt. They ate up all the clock, and it worked in gbs favor. With that being said, this cant be the plan against the bucs. They are going to have to risk more. But the titans game to me proves that pettine is willing to do that when necessary. Yesterday, not disrupting the game plan was the packers game plan. It was eerily similar to the colts game, with the 2 3 and outs in the 2nd half. The difference was the defense in the red zone and no turnovers luckily in the 2nd half.

Huh? The Bears had 204 yards on 33 attempts when it mattered and held a team that was scoring 30 per game during their win streak to 16 points and two TOs...looks good to me. That long drive resulted in nothing empty calories

The Bears rely on Montgomery or have done recently. It’s not too dissimilar to Tennessee. The rate they moved the ball was killing them effectively by the 4th quarter. I can’t really argue that soft coverage was an ineffective call.

I think, however, the question Pettine needs to ask now is whether we need to use it when our more aggressive coverage seems more effective at stopping opponents’ progress. That seems the more relevant lesson to me.

Nonsense. Chicago had scored 140 points in the four previous games.....that’s 35 ppg. And then on their home field, in their biggest game of the season, they put together a good opening drive and got 7. They finished with 16.

Good grief how ignorant can anyone be. Giving up 12 to 15 play drives, taking the majority of the quarter and keeping #12 on the sideline is worth at least 7 points each time. This allows the opposing offense to stay in the game and puts pressure on the offense to score every possession.

The point is you keep the offense on the sideline and they can’t score. This keeps the game closer than it should be. It’s really not that difficult to understand.

Does that apply here though? You’re worried about a long drive that resulted in a turnover on downs they did all that and got nothing then promptly marched down field and put the game away then got another TO and scored again quit cry damn.

D played well but could not get off the field.

Pettine needs to play more base 3-4 with three down lineman and tight man. We played great D against Tennessee that way. Makes so sense to me that he continues to play two down lineman and an extra corner all the time.

That said, it was a good team win.

Would it somehow make more sense to you if the D then ends up with a ILB covering a WR like MVS had on the 72 yd TD? You would prefer that outcome instead of a 5 yd gain?

I’m not exactly a Pettine defender. I just can’t see how a D that took away Montgomery and Robinson was a problem yesterday or the week before. Sorry, but there isn’t much I can use to lambast Pettine even though I think this D could be better if he just let it attack more.

I was annoyed that Mutch kept throwing to his left and until the last drive the boot option was just there. Why not jump it when a guy is moving and has one option to throw? King dropped the INT. Like two others were dropped also. Overall the D did what it needed to do.

Indeed they were. Sullivan whacked a couple of Bears and King hits at least. Barnes is a physical guy and Kirksey is much better as a sub-package player. Amos has always been pretty hard-nosed. ILBs in general have been much more physical and getting better angles to put a hit on ball carriers. The hit on Mooney was a crunch.

“Besides that horrible play...”

“Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the show?”

The D stepped up and prevented that turnover from being the disaster it could have been. Doesn’t change how bad a fumble on special teams is.

Here’s an idea, how about we just send guys out there on kickoffs and punts to just catch the ball. I don’t really care about returns at the point. I just want to see the ball safely downed and back in the hands of AR. Although I seem to recall someone recently (Shepherd last year?) botch a fair catch, so maybe that’s not even a safe move.

They held them to 356 yards, a team that was scoring 30 plus points during a win streak only scored 16 points, they had a long drive that ended in a turnover on downs, had another interception, was 6-15 on 3rd down, held Montgomery to 69 yards on 22 carries Mitch’s last run in garbage time is the ONLY reason they went over 100 yards, Mitch was held to 204 passing yards on like 35 attempts when it mattered...so what’s the problem again? True. I would note that the offense scored touchdowns on 5 of 7 possessions (an 8th "possession" did not involve any time or any plays but ESPN counted it as a GB possession). Also true that both GB punts came in the 3rd quarter.

I agree that the defense played well, certainly well enough to get the win. It was just a weird game and I can see both sides of the argument. Chicago executed its game plan well, getting 74 plays to GB's 44. Chicago didn't do much on offense but had few negative plays and no big mistakes like fumbles and INTs until late. Which in turn means GB didn't make big defensive plays but allowed a bunch of 3 and 4 yard runs.

GB is better than Chicago, so the Bears hoped for a mistake, like the Austin fumble or an INT. AR threw a couple of iffy balls but they all found the ground.

The defense has been playing their best football for quite some time now. Their last really bad game was on Nov 22 vs Indy. They put in solid efforts vs Chi (x2), Philly, Det, Car and Tenn since then.

It's exactly what you want to see as a Packer fan. Not so much what you want to see pairing with this offense if you're on the other side.

Chicago played the number 30, 31, and 32 ranked defenses over the last few weeks. And they scored against those defenses. Chicago did look better since those teams weren't allowing 35 PPG.

It really puts a premium on GB being extremely efficient on offense. So far, GB has been.

Defense played well but I wanted me some Snacks. Trubisky can only throw the short rollout boot and check downs. Anything downfield is an Interception waiting to happen. Amos read the INT all the way. So glad we got the bye, let the other teams beat up on each other. Finally Rodgers just earned his 3rd MVP!

The false start wasn't called so a 4th and 1 should have been 6 to go. I saw Z held on another play that wasn't called. How did the ref not call the PI on Davante right away? Home cooking but we made it through.

-Lot to like. Rodgers looks dialed.
-Kevin King- that 3rd and 3-I was yelling at my TV pre snap.
He also appears to have attended the Deion Sanders school of tackling. Its ugly.
Hated the bears winning the TOP, but they do still suck-

I have been really rooting for King to do well but its hard. He makes some tackles, then fails to wrap up and tries those legs cutting tackles which he only wins 50%, then tries to stick his nose in on other tackles to make up for the misses. I'm hoping he plays well in the playoffs but I doubt the Pack will spend $ to keep him.

Yeah, King drops his head prior to contact resulting in some complete whiffs. It is a habit now. Can't help but wonder if he doesn't want to wrap up because his shoulders are duct-taped into the sockets.

King believes in doing 200+ pushups every day. Those are his low figures. In one of his interviews long back, he had mentioned that his father had instilled that into him.

Pushups are not cardio... they should not be done every day. His shoulders are now an issue; easily getting injured, and perhaps stiff and making it difficult to wrap his arms around when tackling.

A wonderfully urgent but patient drive in the fourth quarter featured our trio of superstars in Rodgers, Adams, and Jones in a fitting finish for a clutch win.
13-3, a shout of glee.
Plus the bye, a happy cry.

That's why I think you have to re-sign Jones. We don't really know what we have yet with Dillon, but we do know that Rodgers, Jones, Adams is the best triumvirate in the NFL. Why break it up? Did the old Packers think about letting Hornung go because we had Taylor?

A thumbs up from me, Johnny, and I hope we find a way to keep Jones.
I think we make him a sincere offer, one that guarantees him some good money but also minimizes our risks -- maybe two or three years, with incentives for games played.
Somehow I doubt that Jones will take it with Drew Rosenhaus as his agent.
It's worth a try, though. That guy is superbly good, and may become great.
The problem with running backs is that they tend to fade physically just when they're on the verge of greatness.

It just wasn’t going to be a typical Bears v Packers game until Trubisky threw a pick. My unease didn’t subside until Nagy decided to throw on 4th down, after being 4-for-4 by the run. Two major mistakes and several (too many really) minor ones made this game much closer than it needed to be. Get the mistakes out of the way for the playoffs. Billy Turner should get a game ball for his play.

For a while I was concerned that MVS cost us the #1 seed.
First possession in the 3rd quarter, Jones runs for 9 yards. Why are we throwing the ball on the next 2 downs.
No Dillon? Why?
Saw Snacks in for a few plays.
Great games by Rodgers, Jones and Adams.
OL held up excellently without Bak.
Gary, Savage, Alexander and Amos had good games on defense.
Can someone teach King to wrap up??!!?
Why did we start the game with 2DLs when 3-4 DLs last week stopped the ground game cold? Take Montgomery out of the game and the Bears have nothing.
Despite everything we have the #1 seed and the bye.
Congratulations to the Packers and all Packer fans.
Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

Hicks had 2 QB hits. I didn't see Patrick allow those so I don't know the circumstances behind them. Quinn had 2 QB hits, presumably against Turner, but I only saw one allowed by Turner. Mack and Gipson each had 1 QB hit. Now, allowing 6 QB hits isn't bad, and only one sack to boot.

Yeah, Dillion had a heck of game last week. But for goodness sake he just came off the Covid-19 list. Who knows even if he had his legs this week.(Even with one snap) And to play two productive veterans over him in a de facto playoff game, that's a no brainer. Besides, looks like the Packers were running a fairly small run package this week.

A whole lot of people, myself included, figured that the Packers were due for a regression in year 2 under MLF because the 13-3 season last year was a bit anomalous - lots of weird wins in close games (c.f. both Lions games). We were outclassed in the NFCCG last year and it didn't seem like we'd picked up enough in the offseason to put us over the top this year. Well, here we are in January 2021 and MLF and the Packers have wrapped up the 1-seed with another 13-3 season, and this time around look like the championship team we've been hoping for. Kudos to the whole organization and everyone at CHTV and let's go get another ring! GPG!!!

To see what happened to the 49ers shows just how much a team can slip after looking almost unstoppable the previous season.
That the Packers matched their 13-3 mark from last year, and seem to be even better going into the playoffs this time around, is indeed quite an accomplishment.to appreciate and even cherish.
Wasn't it just two seasons ago that we were blown out by the Lions in a dismal finish to a miserable season?

You almost thought the Bears were on to something with that offensive game plan, but no, you have to successfully stretch the field to keep up with the Packers; it's tough to make all those conversions drive after drive.

Great job by our O-line: a few QB hits, but only one sack allowed.

We won despite giving away 10 points between the drops by King and MVS.

Speaking of King, does he have an injury which prevents him from using his arms for tackling?

Busy day for Barnes--we've got a winner here. Good job of catching and blocking by Dafney, too.

Austin: You need to protect the ball instead of keeping it out there when you're surrounded by a bunch of charging Bears on returns.

I read in a recent article that some Bears fans initially thought they got the better of the Amos/HHCD swap. Huh?

Offense looks unstoppable, defense improving, and looking real good here except for special teams--maybe we'll get a chance to get some work in here with the extra time. Everyone else gets a well-deserved rest.

It seems King plays too far back in coverage for the situation; then after giving up the catch in front of him, is poor at tackling. Not a good combination.
I'm not giving up on the guy, but let's say there's room for improvement by not allowing so much room between him and the receiver.
If one were to write a book about his game today -- with the failed attempt at a body tackle, and the flailing attempt at an interception -- the title could be, "A Farewell to Arms."

Packers played 5-2 on snap for most of the game. Smiths and Gray played close to the entire game at the LOS. Bears wanted to control the clock in a game they were two scores down. Right. Why didn't Nagy thrown downfield? We all saw the answer in the fourth when he did. This defense played a fine game.

Here ya go:
Dominic Dafney: Via Wikipedia
In his only season with the Indiana State Sycamores, Dafney rushed for 439 yards and caught 15 passes for 196 yards and scored seven touchdowns and was named second team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference at fullback.
Dafney was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent August 26, 2020 and was waived on September 8, 2020 during final roster cuts.
He was signed by the Green Bay Packers to their practice squad on October 12, 2020. The Packers elevated Dafney to their active roster on December 5, 2020, and was officially signed to the active roster on December 12.
On December 27, he recorded his first NFL catch, a 13-yard reception from Aaron Rodgers, during a Week 16 victory over the Tennessee Titans and his first touchdown today!
He just might be a keeper!

Plus, right after his touchdown catch he had a big tackle on the ensuing kickoff.
The Bears returner, Patterson, looked like he was about to go from third to fourth gear when Dafney tackled him from the side.
So that makes both Tonyan and Dafney as free agents out of Indiana State. We may want to locate a scout there during the college football season, or get Larry Bird to give us some good tips.

Chicago has made the playoffs twice in the last ten seasons; Chicago has made the playoffs twice in the three years Khalil Mack has been on the team. I don't think it is a mere correlation but is a causative relationship.

Packers are spoiled: after seven season with no playoff appearances, signing Mack and getting to the playoffs might be considered a good move by Bears' fans. Tubisky just failed to improve and that killed their chances.

I liked the intensity we had on D. There was some excellent tackling out there today from Savage, Amos, Gary, Barnes, and Alexander. There were still some horseshit efforts from others, but at least it was ramped up, guys lowering shoulders finally. Thought Lowry played his ass off, as well as Clark. Please find a way to keep Aaron Jones. He kept us alive several times.

Remember when Chicago traded for Mack? The field was tilted. They'd be the '85 Bears again. And with Hicks back this time, well, look out Green Bay! Guess what? The damn field still hasn't tilted, and our O hung 35 on the ferocious Chicago Bears. The Bears still suck.

Anything is possible with this team. Go Pack!

Leotis, it seems you're getting at the reasons for conflicting comments here about the defense.
It appears there was good energy and toughness and team tackling that was impressive.
Yet something seemed off, I'm not sure what.
Perhaps at halftime, we could have made adjustments to play better against those short passes to the outside that seemed to keep the Bears drives going on and on.
I'll be interested to hear more analysis from the staff at CheeseheadTV and the fans here over the next week.

Agreed. Most of the numbers all say the defense played well. Chicago did not run the ball well against GB, but nor did they have many negative plays while running. They just churned out 3 or 4 yards most of the time. Chicago didn't make too many mistakes, like offensive holding (which hasn't been called as much this season anyway). This meant that Chicago had one 3rd and 14, a 3rd and 7, and a couple of 3rd and 6s but mostly they had a lot of 3rd and 2 or less. And a lot of 4th and 1.

Chicago seems to have played to its game plan well and still lost by 19. D had two consecutive three and outs but ST turned that sterling effort into 3 for the Bears. The D looks increasingly looks like one that can win against post season teams.

Random Thoughts: No. 1 and Home field all though the playoffs. YES!!! This game encapsulated the entire season. Everything from MVS drops a sure touchdown, to the offense farts in the third quarter to Pettine playing two DL in his main defensive packages it was there. Say what you want, the defense allowed an FG in the second half, and the offense ate up a critical 7:00 plus in a game killing scoring drive. Aaron Jones. Enjoy him while you can. What a gritty performance. D. Adams a Man in a man's game in the fourth quarter. Billy Turner the best offensive lineman in a high level offensive line group. Well worth his free agent signing. (Go Gute) Packers won this game in the trenches, on both sides. The road to the Superbowl goes through Lambleu. I Need A (Root) Beer...

The Defense held them to 16 pts. which is great. I much prefer 3 down linemen on run plays and they ran a lot. The folks not happy with the D in this game wanted more 3 and outs. That takes more big guys on the DL like last week. The game was close for 3/4 of the game. MVS drop and also not moving the chains on 2 and 1 and throwing down field. Teams are only going to get better so the wiggle room is shrinking. Our ST botches of kickoff too close to the side line is a learning point which was +15 yds on kickoff. Also fumbling on a return.
We have some stuff to clean up. Congrats on Adams records and Rodgers MVP. We are going to have to get all our WR's the ball going forward. Adams will find it tough sledding sometime soon. A good coach is going to try and take him away.

The defense held the bears on 3 consecutive downs three or four times today, which normally would result in a punt, but the Bears went for broke on 4th down repeatedly.

It would have been nice to see them win on 4th down. Still, I can't imagine arguing about the defense on a sub 20 point performance. Especially considering the special teams gaff gave the opponent another incredibly condensed field.

I think the Crosby kick to that side was intentional to try to limit Patterson to that side or the middle of the field. Which is to say no confidence in the coverage team. Overall this season suggests the Pack might better take the chance of the ball at the 40 than try to bring down an elite returner like Patterson. That is how bad ST is right now in GB.

Looks like we probably see Tampa Bay in two weeks.

The announcers were jerks. They were amazed the bears coach was going for it on 4th and 1 all the time? This ain't game six it's win or go home. A 5 year old would not be amazed at this. It's called going all out to win, keeping Rodgers off the field and trying for more points.
Why are our backs playing off so far. My only guess is to discuss their lack of speed. It was obvious they don't trust trubisky going downfield, it's all run and dink passed so why the prevent. Pettine sucks?

The announcers were just fine. Burkhardt is well-spoken and entertaining. Johnston is informative and even handed. They are consummate professionals. To the contrary, you are a worthless troll.

There was no prevent defense. You would not have any idea of whether the DBs were "playing off so far" or not, because you have no clue about what you watching. Learn something about the game, you might not sound like a complete ignoramus.

Can the Packers retire the number ten in honor of Mitchell Trubisky? He's won more games for them than some others on the ring. And while they're at it, add Jay Cutler's six.

I think in two weeks the only goal is to collapse the Tampa Bay pocket otherwise it will be tough. I hate seeing Brady play like he's on the couch

I think what disturbed me most about the King drop is that he was just standing there and seemed to have been for almost a second. He just was not in the play, either looking for a receiver to cover/hit or the ball. I mean they were throwing to any part of the field that Alexander was not party to so King was getting a lot of looks but geez, he was just standing there.

I know the Bears did well on 4th down BUT they gained the most yards on 4th down when they punted. It is sadly clear that GB's ST on the field are "suboptimal for the Packers".

So many positives from the game but what really stood out to me was the way the defense swarmed to the ball. That’s championship play! We have a lot of talent, on our defense, but no matter what your talent level is you can always bring hustle.
