Gut Reactions: Packers 2014 Week 17 vs Lions
Aaron's Gut Reactions to the Packers' win over the Lions
By PackerAaron
- Please be OK QB1.
- Loved TJ Lang talking junk to Suh after that bush league crap from Suh.
- Richard Rodgers has really improved week to week all year long.
- How about McCarthy and this Packers team running all over the Lions? The Lions defense has been incredibly tough to run against all year and McCarthy and Co simply did not give a crap.
- That said, I hated how Lacy got them down to the doorstep of the endzone on that opening drive and then he didn't see the ball again until 4th down.
- DeAndre Levy is one hell of a football player.
- So is Randlall Cobb.
- Aaron Rodgers is the league MVP.
- It's really disconcerting how it took 3 quarters for the Packers' defense to key on the fact that Stafford and the Lions were throwing almost everything inside.
- Morgan Burnett wasn't quite as great as he was last week, but he was pretty damn good.
- Mike Daniels is one of my favorite Packer players in a long time. A lot of what he does doesn't show up in the box score, but damn if he doesn't win his individual battle down in and down out.
- Another blocked kick and a huge gaff on the free kick after the safety. Not to mention a near-blown onside kick. Yes, they are all individual breakdowns. But at some point, you have to start to wonder how much of these miscues are individual breakdowns and how much are systematic problems.
- Love seeing Julius Peppers show up when it matters most. He didn't get sacks, but he caused major problems for Stafford and the Lions.
- NFC North Division Champs. Again.
- Bring on a much-needed bye week for QB1 and others.
- Go Pack Go.

Had Rodgers not come back, the Packers would almost certainly have lost.
Regarding Suh, I'm not sure if we want to see him suspended or not. Without him, the Lions have no chance to beat the Cowboys, which means we'll get the Cowboys, who are playing extremely well.
So, it's one of those situations where perhaps the Packers shouldn't complain too loud about Suh.

Agree on the Suh comment. Much rather play the Carolina/Arizona winner. Think we'll be stuck with the Cowboys. Don't see the Loins winning in Dallas even though I have Suh on my all overrated team.
Speaking of Suh, I was hoping the spread would have been wide enough to insert Lane Taylor for a crack-back block. Suh knew exactly what he was doing we he backed up on ARod's leg,. If there's any justice....

If he's suspended:
1) Dallas will win for sure
2) Dallas will get a big lead early and rest key players
3) Dallas will be able to begin game planning for the Packers this week
No doubt about it. A Suh suspension will make life more difficult for the Packers, which is some kind of irony.

Looking ahead of the current playoff opponent and to the next one is a recipe to blow the game in front of you.
Let's not forget the Tony Romo and Cowboy team that we've all seen for the last several years. Neither bear much resemblance to the version we see this year. Never discount the possibility they will return to being who we all thought they were.

Great win. QB1 went legend.
ST's may be our downfall. How many blocked kicks is that? Can't have that in the playoffs.
2 more wins, and we're in Arizona. 1 of which will likely need to be in Seattle. I think we can exact some revenge there. I believe.

Man, I love this team. QB1 is the MVP and Lacy has no regard for humanity.
Suh honestly needs more than a fine and small suspension. The constant disregard for his actions and inevitable "Woops, I didn't mean it" is enough. There's a very fine difference between reactive anger and being a sociopath. Thank goodness he's too dumb to be a good sociopath.

That sack was on Flynn. He had I think Rodgers? In the slot to the right of him. The DB was about 10 yards off the ball from him on a 3rd and 3? How does he not do a simple throw to him?
Zola Davis
December 28, 2014 at 11:16 pm
I don't think the play calling was conducive for Flynn's success either today or other times that he's played. If needed for extended action, I think he would get in the flow and be better.
I do, however, wonder what is up with Tolzien. Head scratcher, there.

Eddie is a beast.
7 blocked kicks in ONE season.
This could very easily have been a blowout. That first drive getting stymied, Aaron missing time, defense giving up drives. Blocked FG.
We can beat any team in the league.

Gritty performance by #12, but I think they lose if he doesn't come back out. Defense seemed to fall apart a bit towards the end.

For the first time in a long time the Packers played more physical than a tough team, from Rodgers playing through the pain, solidifying his MVP bid, to Lacy and the ground game running the ball down the Lions throat. The defense did a great job of putting pressure on Stafford, limiting Calvin Johnson and keeping the Lions running attack in check.
Great game to finish off the regular season and wrap up our 4th straight NFC North title.
Now time to rest and heal and get prepared for the playoffs at Lambeau Field!

I've had a calf strain/pull. That puppy is very easily aggravated. I seriously doubt it will be healed in 2 weeks time. The offensive line was absolutely outstanding today. If they play that way again, QB1 will not have to scramble much.
Suh's antics were a clear sign of frustration since the Lions couldn't get to a gimpy Rodgers. Had he been 100%, this would have been a romp.

IMHO, the game plan was to pound Detroit as a show of force. In the right setting he will be used if the D keys on WR1 & WR@. Not that RR shouldn't be in the mix; its all about matchups. The reason I don't worry about Adams is that Boykin isn't doing much, either; so it must be the game plan.

That first drive was like a flashback to packer running the way it used to be,except until the final few yards ugh. Did Lacy and Starks disappear or did MM have to get cute again? Exactly. I'm positive at the time everyone was saying the same about the play calling at he end, Call it what you want but storming your way down the field and then not making a yard is frustrating. Not whining or complaining just wanted them to finish it off so badly to cap what was an incredible statement drive, and one that I longed to see.

Great win. Time for a rest. Only one thing I noticed throughout the game: what the hell is Dix doing? I see a lot of standing around and watching others make plays. Bad weather won't bother Dallas at all. It's run, run, run...long pass to Dez. BTW: Dez is the best receiver in football at this point. He really battles for every ball. Super competitor. Ditto for Romo.
Dallas has injury problems at linebacker, so I foresee opportunities to run up the middle. With QB1 gimpy, it's going to have to be run-first, just like today.

Remember 2007? Packers were the #2 seed. The Gints knocked out #1 Dallas & Packer fans are thinking hooray, we don't get Dallas + we do get home field for the NFC title game. The problem is that if a team can go on the road and win against the #1 seed, they can probably beat the #2 on the road, too.

Does anyone doubt the outcome if we have Stafford and they have Rodgers? For those few who still like to complain about it, this just goes to show the importance of that position and why the best QB is nearly always the MVP. Including this year. JJ Watt is a tremendous player and from all accounts a great person, but this should be a near-unanimous vote this year, and the one Flynn series that counted solidifies it. This is an 8-8 team at best without Rodgers.

I agree. I despise the Lions in a way that's different from how I feel about other teams.
I hate the Bears with a respect and reverence for 90+ years of honorable rivalry.
I hate the Vikings for their stupid inflatable dome, god-awful horn, obnoxious fans, etc.
I hate the Cowboys because they were the roadblock to the Super Bowl in the early '90s, because of Jerry, and because... Dallas.
I hate the 49ers and Seahawks because of their jag coaches.
But I just effing hate the Lions. They are quite simply bad human beings. I really thought it was Jim Schwartz, and once he was replaced by Caldwell, a quality person, they would change. I was wrong. You put a pig in a prom dress and it's still a pig.
It's fitting that that shittiest team in the NFL would inhabit the shittiest city in America. Best thing that could happen would be North Korea nuking Detroit so we can wash our hands of that fiscally bankrupt city with their morally bankrupt team.

Lion's are dirty like the 80's Pistons. Bill Lambeer, et al; man they were bad.
Did you see the idiot Viking motorcycle dude waving pom-poms in the endzone? Only thing better is if they would've been pink.
Bears: I agree with the rivalry.
Cowboys: yeah, hate them too. Michael Irving is going to get slugged by Marshall Faulk one of these weeks because he doesn't shut up! What don't you get that your face time should be about 1/5th of the show; commesurate with the others. Just shut up already, you're just a diva WR. That said, one of my finest moments was marching my family (in full green/gold) into Cowboys Stadium 2 months after GBP won "their" SB! The staff tried to talk smack, but I had their number! Yes!!!! Then visiting "their" lockerroom, where the Pack was the only NFL team other than their precious teams' because the Pack was the "home" team. I thought I heard Jerry still sobbing, but I think he was too busy finding a new coach.
SF/Seattle: REALLY want to avoid another Seahawk SB win; because I think both teams play too much off emotion which can't be sustained long-term. Yes it gets them some success, but when salary cap realities set in, the morale suffers.

How good is this offensive line? They sprung Lacy and Starks early, blowing up the myth of the great Lions run defense. Then they protected a nearly immobile quarterback in the second half and made the only memorable moment for Suh his thuggish stompy feet. My game ball goes to them.

Yup, the o-line was pretty darn good.
Again.
There was plenty of talk this past offseason about the potential of this o-line to be the best Packer line in quite a while. It has pretty much worked out that way. I don't think they are on par with the great Cliffy-Wahle-Flanagan-Rivera-Tausch unit of the early to mid 2000's. But they are nosing their way in to the conversation.
