Gut Reactions: Another long look at the depth vs the Jets

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers preseason loss to the Jets

  • I enjoyed the Benkert Bowl.
  • Seriously, Kurt just slings it. Total gamer. May not be the most refined guy but I love the way he plays the game.
  • Saw lots of people getting on Sternberger for that third down drop who were really quiet about his TD catch. I get it's frustrating, but that "drop" was a real bang bang play where there was clear contact at the top of the route. I have a hard time putting that completely on the young tight end.
  • Kylin Jatavian Hill just scores touchdowns.
  • Taylor's fumble may have ended any perception that there's still a competition for RB3.
  • I really like Jack Heflin. Thought he had another nice performance.
  • AJ Dillon is a damn tank.
  • It was pretty impressive to watch a lot of Packers backups on offense move the ball early against the Jets starters on defense.
  • That 21 yard punt from JK Scott...yikes.
  • TJ Slaton providing a little pass rush would be an incredible development.
  • Don't judge anything off these preseason showings when it comes to special teams. With 32 guys in street clothes, we were watching a lot of backups to backups on teams who are also playing from scrimmage who have often not worked together on these units during the week. Patience.
  • Damon Hazelton was signed yesterday...and is out on the field in the 2nd quarter today.
  • Saw some nice things from Delontae Scott early on.
  • Really nice bounce back performance from Yosh Nijman.
  • One more until it matters.
  • Go Pack.

Bank on Benkert, make sure he's protected for the practice squad.
Bag Begelton, or at least don't pass over him lightly.
Up with Uphoff, who may have made the team today based on a big tackle on special teams, which stands out for its rarity among that unit.
Bring back, if possible, all three reserve backs of Hill, Taylor, and Williams, who all seem really good.

Uphold faces a lot of competition at safety. Gaines had another good performance.

I don't see enough roster spots for 4 RBs and I think Hill has made this squad.

TGR, I'm considering the practice squad in my wish list.
How do Williams and Taylor look to you with that in mind, and who do you personally like as the third running back?
Same with Uphoff and Gaines, are they good keeps for at least the practice squad in your estimation?

Very possible one is playing for the 53 and the other for the PS. Both could be PS candidates. 85 guys on the roster, and 5 have to be cut by Tuesday. I can't even name the five who will get the ax on Tuesday.

I think Gaines has the PS made already. Uphoff had two fine ST plays including knifing through a double-team to force a fair catch. That won't show up on any statistic.

It looks like GB is determined not to play any starters, though they could get a better idea of where they stand against Buffalo than they got against the woeful Jets and the not much better Texans. I'd expect GB to release Hazelton except they might need him to be WR #4 against the Bills. Redmond limped off the field, and I haven't heard a status on him. Crawford looks like he needs a year to work out. Molson, Capra, maybe not Cronk who at least got a look today, all are candidates. Will Love return so as to make Dolegala expendable?

I do see that Uphoff had at least a couple of nice plays on STs. I would like to see more on defense, but if STs decides things he has a chance, imo.

uphoff has no shot with gaines black and scott. they all tackle. thats why redmond has no shot either. also, they are not keeping 5 rbs. dexter williams will be on the practice squad, taylor as well. theres only 53 spots. begelton also, no chance in hell. if they keep funchess, that would be 6 wrs. its either funchess or malik taylor. most likely funchess with taylor on the practice squad.

I have to say, I was quite impressed with Benkert. He showed poise, he was ripping it and showed he was comfortable with the offense. I am usually NOT a fan of keeping 3 QBs on the 53 but I am wondering if he forces Gute's hand...

Sternberger was playing well into the 3rd...He is NOT a lock for the 53...

O-line was much better....but Lucas Patrick was not good...he is playing for not just his job but a roster spot, though I would guess he is probably okay

I cannot wait to see Dillon annihilate safetys at the second level....he is a solid human

Patrick Taylor lost his spot with the fumble....the back end secondary players are not great....

Kylin Hill, I had a 4th round grade on...he could be a very nice steal...

Thumbs up from me, Bure9620, although I don't understand how one fumble would eliminate Taylor from the running back competition.
He looks really good overall, and I think him and Hill and Williams are about tied in my book -- all three of them quite impressive.
I'd hate to lose any of them, especially with the pounding running backs will take over a 17-game season plus playoffs.
Five running backs is not too many, and I hope we find away to keep this current quintet.

If Lucas Patrick is still viewed as a starter by this staff, they had an odd way of showing it. For an established player, he played a lot of snaps today in a game where few starters played any.

Not only did he play a lot, but he wasn't particularly impressive. He will need a strong game against Buffalo to make the team. I hope he does as his experience will be helpful with all of the young guys, but he will have to earn his position.

Concur Bure9620. Dillon was impressive in the few carries he got. He just runs through people. P. Taylor committed the cardinal sin of running backs - he coughed up the ball. I think the RB3 competition is just about over. Taylor and Williams to the PS.

At least one of the two holding calls on Patrick was BS, a view LaFleur endorsed. Overall, I didn’t see Patrick as any kind of problem today. In fact he seemed to be opening holes regularly. Nijman played pretty well and even Braden seemed an upgrade over Kelly. Newman is really in the mix I think.

Fair point as to him and others as well. PFF ranked Newman and Myers particularly highly, which matches my impression from watching live. Nijman was the other who both looked good and rated well. Braden did better than I expected based upon my initial impression.

JK Scott had that gawd-awful 21-yard punt, then he has that beautiful 51-yard punt (and subsequent awesome coverage tackle). Not sure that there's a more consistent kicker out there to replace him, but they sure better be looking. A good punter is a defensive weapon, and NOT a liability. Right now Scott is a liability.

No finesse in his kicks either. He cannot kick to the sidelines or inside the 10-20 yard line. Boom or bust on his punts. But he is pretty flexible for a tall skinny kid.

If the special teams are going to be this bad, and the offense is going to be the greatest show on turf as mentioned in a previous article why don't we just go for it on 4th down every freakin' time! Put the NFL on notice, you may be able to stop our special teams but you can't stop this. If this level of play keeps up I can see Lafleur going for it on many occassions this season.

Special teams and run D. Special teams and run D. Some things never change. Even though it's scrubs you would think the coordinators would have guys in some proximity of where the ball is going. The big question to be answered is whether the new ST coordinator and the new DC are an improvement? If Barry is going to keep playing zone there will be players running free even when our starters are in.

The special teams were very uneven - some good plays and some very bad plays. Better than last week, but still not NFL grade special teams. You can't give up a 70+ yard return on a kick off and punt a ball 21 yards and be okay.

zone is much harder with backups. they are all young and lack the mental capacity for the most part to be in the right spot in the zone. nfl zones have a lot of leeway, and you have to have the experience to trust your judgement and drop deeper or come up and sniff out something . im thinking of that first td to the te in particular. my guess is savage or amos might of been in better position to make that play, or maybe the vet devondre campbell drops deeper than ty summers did. maybe a tad bit of wishful thinking here, but zone is better with smarter more experienced veterans, in general.

Benkert has attractive arm talent, but a 4th year guy shouldn't be botching snaps, stumbling over his own feet from under center, and throwing to nobody.

Root for him, nice guy, has an arm.. all that jazz, but you're fooling yourself if you think he's a regular season starter in the NFL.

He's a PS arm at this point, and in year 4, that tells me a lot. I would be outright shocked if the Packers make room for him on the 53. Boyle was better than Benkert, and Boyle wasn't a regular season talent yet, either.

Guam, not great angles on the footwork, but I looked as closely as I could on both, and couldn't see any indication he was stepped on / tripped by the linemen.

It looked like he was tripping over himself. I was actually to the point of trying to see if there was something wrong with his cleats.

Given the number of players not slated for action, I wondered if interrupting my music session with Madonna was going to be worth it. Some quick observations, mostly in the first half:

Benkert didn't look bad at all; okay, he slipped a couple of times, but he made some nice throws and engineered two touchdown drives; Dillon and Hill were impressive.

Idle threat department: M. Taylor better make this team!

Innis: Lame tackling effort on one of those Croft TDS; gotta wrap up and keep him out of the end zone.

Drayton: Contradicting my earlier statements, I'm starting to get a little bit nervous here; this return coverage needs to get cleaned up in a major, major way.

Bonehead move of the week: Gute releasing Winslow, who the Cardinals snapped right back up. Meanwhile, we're left with the not-so-great Scott. I wouldn't mind seeing him on the upcoming chopping block--and Gute putting his trust in a retread, instead.

Jets: Really got it rough with the injuries; that's why we were smart to keep a lot of our guys out.

Winslow of the line drives? He wasn’t the answer. The irritating thing about Scott is that two of his kicks were beautiful with nearly 5 seconds of hang time. Maybe just tell him to kick or hang time and stop the directional attempts?

If it is not so hard to find better punter why don not you send a proposal to Gute. Find one better and you will maybe find your way to Packers Personnel Department as Kicker/Punter specialist?

Name one punter you are sure he is better than Scott!. With that statement I'm not saying that Scott is top, he is more less OK guy with punts you never know what you'll get. Maybe Cardinals had even worse punter than Scott and Winslow, and that is why they offer the job for Winslow.

Your post is like there is the row of very good to excellent punters, just waiting to be signed, but Packers Personnel Department just do not want to improve team they are selecting...

Everything what others do looks very easy and piece of cake, especially when you know s*it about the job you are talking about,

The Packers' personnel department obviously does not prioritize special teams, and that should be abundantly clear to anyone who has followed the team for a while. Competition for the punter job should at least be brought in and not released until the end of the preseason. An inconsistent and unreliable punter will end up costing us at some point.

"Maybe Cardinals had even worse punter than Scott and Winslow, and that is why they offer the job for Winslow...." Yeah, that statement really makes a lot of sense, Mr. Genius.

Andy Lee is likely to be their punter anyway. He’s been good for them and was just resigned this off season. Who knows why they wanted Winslow for a couple of weeks. Hardly think it proves much of anything that they churned their punting depth. Winslow spent time with them before briefly.

Didn't you mention in another article that Gute might be looking for punters on the waiver wire? Maybe we can get him back if Scott continues to have consistency issues. And it doesn't have to be Winslow, either; I'm not fixated on him. I honesty don't think we have that much to lose by at least giving someone else a shot.

thats probably the first tackle ive seen innis miss. gaines, black and scott are all good tacklers. i could see all three of them on special teams making contributions. the tackling on that play wasnt the issue, it was the fact that he slipped right in the middle of the field and was wide open. when a tight end catches the ball on the goal line, hes gonna get that extra inch on a safety regardless of what he does. and as for malik taylor. really? i like the guy. hes a nice story. so was darrius shephard in the preseason. but funchess would be number 6. they are not keeping 7. would you really trust malik taylor in the nfc championship game? or devin funchess?

M. Taylor hasn't given me any reason not to trust him so far, and he could be useful for ST. He catches nearly everything thrown to him, and he did a great job keeping both feet in on that 23-yard completion. As for Funchess, we've hardly seen him in a Packer uniform, so it's hard to make a judgment at this time.

he is making it hard. but its no question. kumerow caught everything in preseason too. taylor has no size speed or athletic ability compared to first team nfl dbs. thats why he looks great in preseason. because he does all the right things and he has good hands. but funchess is proven, and taylor is not. we could try and hide malik on the ps, we will see. but if you think about it, cobb can do all the malik taylor shit besides special teams. and honestly they might keep taylor simply due to the fact that all of the other wrs besides amari rodgers are free agents next year. taylor would be controllable for 2 more seasons after this. interesting decision gute has. but if its all about 2021. its devin funchess.

Taylor is not tall but he is not small at over 6 ft and 220, he’s not a deep perimeter guy, but he is strong with plus hands. As to speed, he was timed at around 4.4 in college. He’s probably the fastest receiver behind MVS now Thompkins is on IR. Very different from Shepherd. Small, extremely agile but lacking speed.

Taylor came in with virtually no route running skills, just an athlete. He had a heck of a long climb to learn the position. That’s why he was so limited. This year he’s taken a huge step forward in terms of the variety and precision in his route running and awareness too in my view. He’s become a receiver not a gadget athlete.

Glad there were no injuries again, though I want to see some starters in the last game against the Bills. You need live action against another team instead of you own teammates.
Winslow didn't show enough to beat out Scott, and roster cuts are due. Five more meet the guillotine on Tuesday and 27 more on Aug 31st. Packers will grab a vet after roster cuts in 10 days. Scott had his chance and either doesn't care or is not focused enough. No more drafting punters; EVER

Pretty good first half. Great 10 minute drive. Benkert and Hill stood out.

I really liked that they had lots of guys out returning punts and kicks in the second half. Dexter and Begelton with some nice returns.

I may complain about the guys we don't dress, but feel for the Jets with their injuries today.

Zach Wilson looked pretty good for the Jets.

Not sure who we are cutting this week based on performance today.

I get most of the ST guys out there are likely gone, but it is hard not to think new coach..same brutality. JK's inconsistency is frustrating. The best play was that nice hustle and tackle by Uphoff near the end of the game.

Not that I proclaim to be a tackling coach, but he needs to make a decision to either play for the arm and ball or aim lower to the solar plexus of the QB - but keep away from the head and neck, or risk drawing a penalty (I personally thought it was a good hit).

I thought the hit itself was legal. I thought the two steps he took after the QB released the pass was iffy. Others disagreed with me that he took 2 steps/it was a late hit. IIRC, the QB was Mike White, not Mahomes (which shouldn't make any difference but I think it does).

Agree with both you and TGR that this was a good hit - and he did almost everything in his power to not land on the QB and drive him into the ground. Looking at it again, the main thing that the zebras seemed to object with was the helmet to helmet contact (as light or indirect as it actually was).

FWIW, go and watch Aaron Donald's play now. He seems to place more emphasis on attacking the throwing arm and obstructing the ball trajectory (to force a turnover) than pancaking the QB - and if he does, he seems to employ a wrap-and-drag-down rather than a shoulder-and-pancake technique.

My biggest takeaway from this game did not occur on the field but the sideline. I loved the footage of Rodgers and LaFleur interacting. Their body language suggested to me that everything is copacetic. Rodgers' subsequent interview in the fourth quarter reinforced that he is all in this year.

For the love of me can't figure out the fantasy with JScott and letting Winslow walk! Scott is modern day football rendition of Jekyll and Hyde!

Man, I'm disappointed in you guys! Not a single post claiming Benkert has clearly won the back-up job and Gute should be finalizing the deal to trade Love by tomorrow. You're slipping, or maybe just sober? Or you watched the game?

Jack Heflin is a shorter Carl Barzilauskas / Mike McCoy mashup who just may be a damn good football player. I like him.

The Packers may have Benkert operate exclusively out of shotgun formation. I think it's either that or use his inability to get out cleanly from under center to our advantage. He did instinctively get to his feet and run after his second fall, and that is a skill that cannot be taught.

Carrying resentments will eat you up inside, especially if you add mental exclamation points to them There's no reason to ever let anyone else live rent-free in your head.

Remember, this is the internet. Pretend awards or demerits just don't matter.

Anyone who makes it to the NFL works harder than you ever have in your entire life.

I feel pretty confident in saying that.

Yeah, I don’t think he won the back up job, nor will he. Gute wouldn’t permit his golden child to be dethroned. I seem to be in the minority but when I watch Love I don’t see Pat Mahomes, I see DeShone Kizer.

During the sideline interview with John Kuhn, Rodgers said he went over to the lineman who stepped on Benkert's feet (twice!) and told him he better improve the footwork because that can't happen when the games are real. He also told the lineman "we're going to have words...) if it happens to Rodgers.

I don't understand how a guy with 4 in the years SEC and 3 years in the NFL can shank a punt that looks like something I kicked. I think they need to look closely at punters who get cut because it's rediculous.

I feel sorry for Randall Cobb.

Between what Funchess put up last week and Taylor this week, come regular season, if one of these guys becomes a roster cut down casualty and Cobb isn't catching anything and everything, he may come in for some flack.

"Really nice bounce back by Yosh Nijman."

Despite all the negativity toward Yosh, IMO he's on track for regular season playing time. Except for the one highly visible gaffe in Game 1, he's looked very steady to me -- like a guy who has learned a lot from watching Bakh, and like a guy who believes he can compete for a starting role.

Still confused by the Patrick hate. Just didn’t see that on first pass.

Taylor had the fumble, but I did see that he averaged 6 yards per carry, by far the closest to Dillon. He hasn’t played in a while after injury. I’m inclined to give him more chances if he can do that. He’s be excellent cover for Dillon on the PS. Hill is a different kind of runner.

ento missed a few tackles but made a few as well. had a couple on special teams. i like the physicality of gaines and henry black as the backup safetys. special teams could be upgraded with gaines black ento, maybe isiah mcduffie. this team needs willing tacklers on punt and kick coverage. tipa galai made one really nice open field tackle on an out route early to the tight end. open field tackling is something this team desperately needs and is a welcoming sight. if you want to make it as a fringe roster guy, making solid open field tackles is one way to get you there. weve been so used to will redmond, and kevin king, its just nice to watch these guys wrap up and hit somebody.

Hard to get a read on much of anything from Saturday except Kurt B. looks like a gamer. Dillon is a tailback in a fullback's body, Lucas Patrick might get traded before the season to a team needed o-linemen.

The overall effort by the players was much better this week. Last week the players looked like they were sleepwalking.

If I was Matt LF I would give all the starters one series next week against a quality Buffalo team. Otherwise they go into the first game under-practiced.

Also, Jacksonville screwed up. They should have taken Wilson#1. This guy is going to be good for a long time.
Lawrence, not sure.

I like Wilson’s mental attributes, but he was playing a vanilla D not scheming for them and made up of 2nd and 3rd tier players not used to playing together. He was also rarely pressured or asked to do anything particularly demanding. A bit early to say that he should have gone number 1 or even that he’s a long term solution for the Jets.

After reading most of the comments, I've come to the conclusion the Scott is a really good holder and Crosby wants him.
