Yes he said the Packers don’t put a lot of emphasis on the inside linebacker position, only the most important position on defense. That about sums it up . Mark Murphy and Gutenkist need to go. You heard it here Oren Burks is our starter.

There is not a single nfl person that will tell you that ILB is the most important person on defense. Not one.

Blake making tackles 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage is all I can say.

Well they put Blake in position to make a bunch of tackles which is what so many of the people who think he's great are quick to point out. Quite the conundrum …. is his tackles a good or bad thing?

Tackles are good.

The big thing was the defensive linemen and OLBs not having any gap responsibilities. I find that hard to believe.

Not after watching the 49rs twice thump them. He may have been inferring gap knowledge was unsound.

It will be interesting to see how Blake's numbers look over the next few years.

I agree. I initially thought Martinez better than many here did. However, he didn’t seem to improve, just to be a workhorse (which has value). Was it system, the player or both?
When they signed Kirksey I took it as a sign that the Packers want a different type of player. Regardless of what Kirksey delivers, he played well under Pettine before. That spoke to Martinez not being an ideal fit.
I don’t really understand the concept of no assignments for DLs, particularly given Pettine’s comments on the role of outside players. It sounds somewhat implausible. The concept of a ILB flowing to the gaps as they appear isn’t new. At the moment, I just think a Martinez Struggled to diagnose fast enough in running and passing. He will do better without that and maybe the Packers will without him.
If Gute drafts ILB and/or hybrid players outside of the last couple of rounds, then that will undermine much of what Martinez said about the position. No action by Gute would of course lend weight to what he said.

I wonder if this was less about Blake was taking a shot at GB and more at Pettine because he thought he'd "have his back" and instead Pettine left him hanging in the wind.

Leading the team in tackles is a good thing but not when the tackles are made 6 or 7 yards downfield. The run stop defense was poor last season. Maybe Green Bay does value the LB position and will address it in the upcoming draft with someone who can cover better and go to the runner instead of letting the runner come to them before making a tackle. I like Martinez but is he worth that kind of money? I guess we shall see how he performs with the Giants. I hope Green Bay gets a top LB from the draft.

Any body can explain to me why the Chiefs are over the cap?. Do they have any time frame to be under?

Rule of 51 says only the top 51 contracts count toward that cap until the final cutdown. It could be that this is the issue at the moment.

The Chiefs are not over the cap limit. Field Yates reported that KC in the NFL's eyes are officially $177 (and no cents) under the limit. See link. The NFLPA has the Chiefs $676K under the limit.
OTC and Sportrac for simplicity's sake include payments not yet made (which don't technically fully count yet) in their public calculations, among other short cuts. They might include announced signings like WR DeMarcus Robinson which may not have been signed yet or submitted to the NFL and the NFLPA. Note that OTC and Sportrac routinely don't agree on the exact cap number for a dozen or two players per team. For KC, they report different numbers for 24 players.
For example, a signing bonus half of which is deferred (See Matt Ryan, who got a $46.5M signing bonus but received $23M immediately and the other $23M in April of the following year) was simply listed by OTC as having a prorated signing bonus of $9.3M for 2018, but it was less than that because half of it was discounted to its present value. Frank Clark had annual $300K incentives for 11.5 sack which was likely to be earned in 2019, but he didn't get 11 sacks so it is now NLTBE, but OTC didn't adjust his cap number down.

I think Pettine wanted the Smiths to make tackle for loss in the run game, a RB with some patience could read their move and go on the ther side of the tackle. Watch the game against the Vikings in Lambeau Cook was readind the Smiths and chossing were to run with success. The Redskins game is another good example Peterson did the same thing even if hsi knees don´t let him do the same kind of cuts anymore. Martinez was completel outplayed in those games because: 1. he is slow to react, 2. does not read the defense well and 3. does not have enough speed. If in NY they give him a gap to focus on he will be very good player for them, but that is not worth 10M. The game against the Eagles I think is different. The whole defense was completely confused by the Eagles formations with the 2 TE and they couldn´t read most of the time if it was a pass or a run.
To sumarize it. Much better signing Littelton for 13M than Martinez for 10M.

Blake trying to justify his contract with the Giants which has been questioned. Good for him for cashing in when he can. We won't miss him.

Oh, I think we will. I hope not too much, but he filled a big hole in that vastly improved defense. You have to get people on the ground and he did that.

Actually hope that Gute drafts another LB identical to Martinez this year in the 4th round or later. Say what you will, Martinez was healthy, he played hard and thats a lot of production for a 4th round pick.
But i also hope they find a LB that is vastly superior to martinez somewhere in the draft.

So my post was again deleted , Blake said the Packers don’t make inside linebackers a priority. He said he was never assigned to fill a gap they depended on the D lineman to plug it , apparently the NFC game was proof of that.

Here’s a news flash: You cannot make every position a priority.
You’ve got to have people in the gaps or you don’t have a run defense. You have holes.

I have a meeting set up with Pettine and Gute to find out what was involved with the decision to let Blake walk and ask Pettine about the gap issue. Will keep you posted if I can. Certainly will have a Spotted Cow or two while up there.
