Around the NFC North: Vikings 2026 Season in Review
Missing on QB so bad you get fired.
By Mike Price

Last week we talked about how all off-season, in 2025, we said the Lions would miss a step down two coordinators and it happened. Well, when we talked about the Vikings making a mistake by going with JJ McCarthy QB, it was even more right. 2-0. Ignore the Bears article, please.
Offense
The Vikings were 28th in EPA on offense in 2025, down from 14th in 2024. This happened after they let Sam Darnold leave to go win a Super Bowl with the Seahawks, and went with JJ McCarthy as QB. McCarthy was PFF's 33rd-ranked QB (remember, there are 32 teams). To make it even worse, at one point this season, Daniel Jones was in the MVP race with the Colts (his season was ended prematurely because of injury), and he was also in that QB room last season.
But that's not all! The only offensive lineman on the team to place in the top 12 at his position was right tackle Brian O'Neil, O'Neil could definitely be a cap casualty this offseason. No running back on the team was close to even an average performer. Jordan Addison took a step back and is now in every wide receiver trade rumor. It's not just the QB! The whole offense is bad.
We'll get into the salary cap soon enough, but let's make it clear: they can't just go sign three offensive linemen, a vet QB, a few new RBs, and a new WR2. Ain't happening. Not only is there no money for any of that, those guys aren't in free agency. More than likely, the Vikings' offense will be bad again.
Defense
At least they have Brian Flores coaching the defense, right? Well, last year, yes. They had the third-best defensive EPA in the league. And that was without superstar-level play from any player on the defense. It is worth noting that they're going to lose Harrison Smith to age.
Flores holds this defense together - their highest-ranked d-lineman was 31st. Linebacker was 40th. D-back was 19th. From that list, Isaiah Rodgers at corner was the best performer. He played outside after previously being a slot corner and benefited from some well-timed pressures. Sound familiar? A few years ago, Byron Murphy played like one of the best corners in the league coming off a disappointing run with the Cardinals. He played well enough to get paid and then was ranked 70th last year. I'm just saying, don't be shocked if Rodgers takes a step back.
Anyway, the other thing with Flores defenses is that, when they're based on cloak-and-dagger-type stuff they get figured out. Half the league is running quarters pressures now and 100% of the league is running sim pressures. It's not that unique and he won't have Harrison Smith as a coach on the field to keep everyone in the right spot.
So...I'm really hoping we see some regression from the defense. Let's say they blow their load on Kirk Cousins in free agency and then the defense is like 12th best. That's a recipe for a 5-12 team. Nice.

Odofo-Mensa left a large mess behind him in Viking land. He whiffed on a 28 year old SB Champion QB and another good veteran QB to keep JJ McCarthy. And the Vikings only have about $30MM in cap space this year due to large contracts on aging players. The Vikings could be bottom dwellers for several years before this mess gets fixed.
Between dumping Aaron Rodgers, drafting Jordan Love, signing the Smiths and trading for Parsons, Gute may not be all we want but he is certainly not the worst GM in the league.

OTC says they're in the red by about $40M.

They are now, but supposedly expected moves will put them around $30MM in the black. Kind of like the Packers parting company with Jenkins and Gary - not done yet but pretty obvious moves.

Kwesi also moved up to draft McCarthy, in front of Denver, who drafted Bo Nix, Nix could've been in the Super Bowl, if he hadn't gotten injured, in the playoffs. also, with their cap space issues, they will need to restructure contracts and most likely, let some people go. The egomaniacs on that team, might not like that, and may demand to be traded. They will replace the Loins, as Cellar Dwellers, in the NFC-North, for the foreseeable future. Loving it, I am! I just hope they don't get lucky and get Malik Willis, in FA. I'd hate to play against Malik, twice a year.

I know we have the best kicker in the division…..
At missing field goals. And extra points …..he has to be on the take …..
Will they extend Mcmiss contract

I would never say a player is on the take unless I knew for a fact. That is truly low to say that about a player.

I still find it astounding that the Vikes let Darnold walk for what is virtually nothing on the starting NFL QB market. Especially after the year the team and Darnold had in 2024. He really didn't get that much from the Seahawks compared to other QBs who had seasons like he had.
At the very least sign him for $30 million and trade him for at least a 1st round pick. The rookie QB could sit & learn for another year if they keep him. I am not so sure GB shouldn't transition tag R Walker and trade him for a higher pick than a late 3rd round comp pick, like I have read in several articles on Packers sites.

Once a team tags a player that money goes against the cap. So he would count $23 mil. That is less cap space for the Packers to use in FA.

You obviously don't understand how the transition tag works. Even though it's been explained to you several times. The tag amount immediately goes on your cap.
Also, what would be the incentive for another team to trade (give up draft capital) for Walker when they can just sign him as a UDFA at the same salary?

Yup. A transition tag just gives the Packers right of first refusal and they get no compensation from another team if he's signed away (unlike a franchise tag). If the Packers have no intention of resigning Walker, the tag is no impediment to his going elsewhere and it gives the Packers no leverage. Whatever internet talking head is floating these possibilities is dumb.

Then just offer him a contract for $19 million anually for 3 years and then trade him. The point is to gain something better than a late 3rd round comp pick. Do you really think everyone that writes about NFL free agents are wrong and no teams will be interested? I'm sorry but I just can't see that. Young, starting , healthy, left tackles are few and far between, especially when they haven't missed a game in 2 years.
Being able to trade a 2nd round pick in order to not be part of a bidding war would be in any teams best interest. Why give him away?

You do realize it takes two parties to get a contract done right? He'll be a FA. You can't force him to sign a contract. That would defeat the whole purpose of Free Agency.
You, yourself, have acknowledged that his market value as a UDFA is north of $20 million and there would be no shortage of teams looking to sign him at market value. Your own words..."Young, starting , healthy, left tackles are few and far between, especially when they haven't missed a game in 2 years." Why would he sign a contract for less than that with Green Bay? He's going to take less just to help GB get draft capital? He would be crazy to take less money with Green Bay. That's not how things work in the NFL.
There's not an agent out there that would recommend their client to do that.

I think Darnold was intent on moving on and Minnesota didn’t do much to convince him to remain.

With a cheap QB in MIN, who is costing so much? Jefferson, sure but who else deserves a massive deal?

Jefferson is the big hit at $39 million. Other impacts are because they deferred cap hits from 2025 free agent signings to 2026, so it's a cumulative ugly that rivals their uniforms. They made major investments in the trenches that just didn't pan out and now the bills are due.

Do you see an immediate upgrade? Sure seems the Packers have considered special teams like a used spare tire.
