After Dropping the ball in 2015, Davante Adams has Finally hit his Stride
It seems like just a year ago, many were calling for Davante Adams to hit the sideline bench in favour of Jeff Janis.
In the crazy universe where that actually happened (I mean, get real, right?), it may be safe to say that the largest of crow has been served to Adams' previous skeptics. But who can blame them for being skeptical?
Adams' sampling size by the end of the 2015 season included a strong outing against New England in 2014, an attention-grabbing performance in the playoffs against Dallas and a sophomore season in which he only caught 53.2% of his passes. He also embarrassingly sported a dropped pass rate of 6.4% - the highest on the team last season outside of Janis' 8.3%, however, he saw just 12 targets.
Expectations continued to reign down on Adams, who came out of Fresno State at 21-years old and as the latest recipient of the Paul Warfield Award. Adams joined a list headlined by the likes of Calvin Johnson Jr., Larry Fitzgerald, Randy Moss and Keyshawn Johnson. That's not too bad of company to associate with.
Choosing to forgo his final two college seasons to declare eligibility for the 2014 NFL Draft sparked questioning, of course. More so pertaining to Adams' skill set and how long it would take for maturation. After shattering a handful of Fresno State school records including most receiving touchdowns in a season (24), the questioning was rightfully justified.
Entering his third season in the NFL, Adams answered the curiosity with his play on the field. His eight touchdowns is second on the team behind the returning Jordy Nelson's nine and his 677 receiving yards since week five is the most in the league through that span.
"I always told everybody that once I was healthy, I was able to produce," Adams told reporters at his locker on Wednesday in the uncommon instance that the team skipped practice. "I'm not going to be perfect. I'm human, so. But, I feel great right now, so I'm just hoping to keep it rolling."
Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence. The chase has been what has made Adams' 2016 that much more special.
He's currently tied for fifth in the NFL amongst wide receivers for most plays over 20 yards, racking up 14 alongside the Chargers' Tyrell Williams. Adams is also tied for the third-most receiving touchdowns with eight, locked neck-and-neck with Odell Beckham Jr. No, that wasn't a typo. The Packers' rising star has the same amount of receiving touchdowns as Larry Fitzgerald and Rob Gronkowski - combined. Albeit, Gronkowski has missed three games this season and Fitzgerald is 33-years old, that looks pretty impressive on paper.
The step from year one to year two and year three has been evident in Adams' progression, and the developmental aspect is arguably the most important. Coming out of Kansas State, Nelson had a suboptimal debut with the Packers, catching just 33 of his 54 targets his rookie year. He battled for playing time behind Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and James Jones for a majority of his first two seasons while serving as the team's primary kick returner through that duration.
After three dropped passes on 31 targets in 2009, things began to click for Nelson in 2010 as the Packers engineered their playoff run that ultimately culminated with head coach Mike McCarthy and his affiliates hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy in February. Since then, Nelson has become a household name for the Packers and the NFL. Can Adams follow suit?
"Knowing that I'm healthy and not having to worry about the pain of when I stick this foot down, how it's going to feel," Adams said. "I can just play and be free. When I'm able to just go out there and not worry about how my body is going to react to different movements and I can play fast, that's when the production comes."
After an injury-hindered campaign in 2015 that, for the most part, flew under the radar, Adams looks to stay healthy moving forward in hopes of matching or even conquering the trail left by Nelson.
"I just keep my head down and keep trucking through the rest of the season."

Am I allowed to say that I'm one those who just never gave up on Adams?
That said, even I didn't expect him to be playing THIS well!

Adams makes 2 TD catches and you guys put him on top of the world. It doesn't matter to you that A-Rod had his best game of the year. It only matters that you think your so right about his skills. Well people i'm a non - believer. To me 2 TDs don't make up for the 3 years of dropped passes. Instead of smoking your cigars . Try smelling what is coming from your bathroom. The TP is just to much for me to get on your wagon. You depended on this guy before. (When Nelson went Down) And were disappointed. I believe that he's still a shitty diaper waiting to happen.

He was not 100% for almost the entire season last year. He is now healthy and will continue prove you wrong as long as he stays that way. Sorry the great white dope didn't pan out for you. Enjoy the guy who is panning out and on a nice trajectory. Hater

I have never backed down about TTs 2014 draft. It never was about hate. Still isn't. It was about better players and better choices! The difference now is who got that chance and who gets cut. Most comments still want TT to draft a Wr. Why? Think about that logically. Why did they keep 7 Wrs on the team. Thats the real argument here if you want to kiss up.

Three years? He had 2 drops all of 2014, had a spotty 2015 because he was injured and battling through that all season long. He's only had two registered drops so far this season as well and has arguably been the most productive receiver on the team. Larry Fitzgerald has more dropped passes. Mike Evans has more dropped passes. Odell Beckham Jr. has more dropped passes. I'm all for everyone having a right to their own opinion, but boy, your comment wasn't very smart.

It's unbelievable how fans can hate on a guy for finally producing - for their favorite team no less - after facing nothing but criticism for the past year. Mind-blowing.

I hammered on Davante. Hoped he'd be cut. Proved me wrong. Keeps this up and he'll have a great career.

Zac where are you getting the new math from? What bias assumptions are you making here? You need to include the targeted throws too. Let alone the A-rod Interceptions, throwing to him. I've criticized TT and this pick for 3 years. Stats don't make a player. He's had the lowest Yards After Catch, among NFL WRs until this year. You think he's great. Lets compare him right now to any of the great WRs the packers have had. Is he Jennings,Lofton, Freeman, Sharpe, Ferguson,Nelson,Cobb, etc. Common dude. You want to justify the favoritism this WR has gotten for the last three years. Adams has had the advantage over others for 3 years. 1. He's been working with the #1 Game day ready unit since day one. 2. He was the 2nd rd. choice. 3. A-rod is trying to shut down the peanut gallery and so are you. I will agree that Adams has finally turned the corner after a lot of work. But be realistic here to how much work he got over his challengers to turn it. It takes work to stay on top, If A-rod goes down what will happen. I did not give him that nickname of Drop Adams!

Glad Adams has finally turned things around. It was easy to forget just how young he is. It sounds like he learned a lot from his struggles. Hopefully he continues to ascend.

Interesting... I remember when I was warning that Davante Adams was injured and that many drops and bad plays were assossiate with that fact, I got here lot of minuses, some of you call me for lack of football knowledge...
Also, I was never on Jeff Janis train. He just do not know how to do his routes in time. This year he regressed heavily. But I think we should gave him another season. That is for sure...

I'll admit that I wanted to see the Packers draft Allen Robinson over Adams, especially after the 2015 season. But I also said and most agreed we wanted to see what Adams could do when he was healthy AND had a WR coach. Many of us also mentioned the 3 year rule for Packers WR's. Most don't contribute on a consistent level until sometime in year 3, Adams has been no different. If I should "Eat Crow" for that so be it, serve that bird up!
Last year when the QB & WR were all coached by the same coach (Van Pelt) was a mistake, one McCarthy admitted at the end of the season. Adams was so young when he entered the draft he really was a boy among men the first 2 years.
Several people, even those who have posted wanted Janis to play instead of Adams. Because Janis was more "Athletic" than Adams, Janis should have been the starter. Nevermind Janis doesn't seem to be able to learn a route tree or run the proper route, can't catch the ball with his hands (Body Catcher) and frankly has had one good game though it was one hell of a game.
Adams hurt is ankle in Week 2 against Seattle last year and was never right again until the playoffs when he was injured again. This year he's healthy and has been consistent. I was hoping for 800 yards and 10 TD's at the start of the season. Looks like he'll beat both of them. Good for you Adams!!

Nick I'm teasing you a little here. Raw or well Done? But seriously he uses his body to catch the ball more than any of the packer greats. I can't say he's the super star that the media is projecting. What is going to happen if A-rod goes down. And A-rods back -up can't make those pin point, basket throws to him? Castrate the next QB. Or will we see the old Devante? I praised him for his last game TDs. But he's still a merry -go-round to me. (Can He, Will He, Should be, IR?)

I understand stockholder and you're entitled to your opinion. Like you I'm not 100% sold on Adams though I love what he's done over this past season. I'm not seeing the large number of body catches your seeing, but I have seen a few. What I have noticed is on many of the passes he's getting YAC those passes are all hands. Rodgers is putting the ball in a spot where Adams is catching the ball and turning upfield at the same time.
If he continues to thrive this season and next, I think the Packers have a pretty damn good WR on their hands.
