Packers Calendar: Clearing Space on the Roster for Khalil Bell

If and when the Packers make the signing of Bell official, they'll either have to place a player on injured reserve or release one.

The Green Bay Packers didn't make the signing of running back Khalil Bell official on Monday but will have to make a corresponding roster transaction on Tuesday if the reports are true.

To clear space for Bell, the Packers would either have to cut a player or place one on injured reserve.

Perhaps the most-likely scenario involves center Evan Dietrich-Smith being placed on I.R. after suffering his second knee injury of the season on Thanksgiving in the loss to the Detroit Lions. However, the team has not yet indicated the severity of the offensive lineman's injury.

There are several other injured players who could be candidates for season-ending injured reserve as well, including defensive lineman C.J. Wilson (ankle), linebacker Jamari Lattimore (quadriceps) and tight end Brandon Bostick (concussion), none of whom played last week.

After reports that the Packers could shut Rodgers down for the season earlier this week, it's possible he's could land on injured reserve too. ESPN's Ed Werder reported that Rodgers was set to undergo scans on his shoulder on Tuesday.

Rodgers is likely to give an update Tuesday afternoon on his weekly radio show "Tuesdays with Aaron,"  aired on the ESPN Radio affiliate in Milwaukee, 540 AM at 1:30 p.m. CT and streamed live online at ESPNWisconsin.com. It will be replayed on 100.5 FM in Madison at 5:00 p.m.

Head coach Mike McCarthy will also hold his re-scheduled press conference on Tuesday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. CT that was originally scheduled to take place on Monday before being postponed. The press conference will stream live on the team's official website at Packers.com.

Wide receiver Jordy Nelson will be the guest on the Mike McCarthy Show that airs on several television markets in Wisconsin and the Midwest on Tuesday evening.

The Mike McCarthy Show airs at 6:30 p.m. CT on WGBA Ch. 26 in Green Bay and WTMJ Ch. 4 in Milwaukee. Complete listings can be found on the team's official website.

Offensive lineman T.J. Lang hosts Tundra Talk on 105.7 FM WAPL in Appleton at 5:00 p.m. and streamed online at WAPL.com.

why put Rodgers on IR? Waive him right away, he is injury prone. And we have 2 pro bowl caliber QBs playing right now, so who needs #12? ...

Bell was a KR in college and briefly for the Bears, so I assume they sign him for that.

I hope you got my sarcasm there... but hey, Longshanks also thinks Harris is Barry Sanders... Not sure whether that is better than the Tolzien / Aikman comparison...

"Perhaps the most-likely scenario involves center Evan Dietrich-Smith being placed on I.R..."

If EDS does go on IR, I'd be shocked if they didn't bring up a true center (Garth Gerhart, most likely).

I just don't think Lang playing C with Newhouse at RG is a workable long-term situation.

I would be ok with Lang at Center.

Just as long as Newhouse isn't on the field. I would say either put Barclay at RG and have Sherrod play RT. or keep Barclay at RT, and put Taylor at RG.

An under the radar move that has hurt this team, is the loss of GVR to IR. No one talks about it, but he was our back up C.
Lang has done ok, but then your changing at least 2 positions if not 3. Its hard to do.

12 better think twice about even trying to come back.
Those line possibilities are terrifying.

I agree. If EDS is done for the year, Gerhart should be moved from the PS To the roster. He should have a good handle on the offense and know the OL calls. He's the obvious choice if EDS is out. Gerhart is a natural Center, not an OG, has been snapping as a Center for years. No reason to experiment and upset the entire OL by moving players to other positions.

My question is Gerhardt better then Lang, or Sherrod?

I guess at center he would have Sitton and Lang next to him. And it would be 1 player for 1 players, vs. moving around a few players.

I just don't know how good he really is.

I have to imagine Gerhart can play center better than Lang...but that's not based on anything other than the fact that Gerhart IS a center.

Yeah, I'm just wondering as a whole line setup if Gerhart being plugged at C, would be better then moving Lang to C and putting someone at RG or RT and moving Barclay to RG...

I like the idea of just plugging a guy in for another guy, but there is a reason why he is on the practice squad too...

Lets IR EDS, Sherrod, Raji, Burnett, Pickett, Worthless, Kuhn, Bostic, Quarless, Taylor, Newhouse.
Ten bucks says we wouldn't miss a beat, still get our asses kicked. Still get run over by even so so backs, still allow 541 yards of passing and running offense. My point, none of the above if playing would do a dam thing to make it better by being there.
Barclay, EDS Sitton, always are hurt. Whats new here.
Kahill of the Vikes has now played two seasons and hasn't missed a play. How do all our guys not make it half way through the season????

No bandwagon jumping here... but I can't imagine that I'm the only one fed up with how they've looked. They're just very, very frustrating and have just sucked so bad lately it's making me nuts!

Tough to compete when you're putting a JV team out there.

you do realize who unusual it is to be in the playoffs as often as the Packers have been the last 20 years, right? Most other teams would be happy. this team started 5-2 and would've been cruising into the playoffs had it not been for #12 getting hurt, plain and simple. Whether they've done anything in January is debatable, but they've been in. So go home and cheer for your beloved Vikings or Bears or whoever you really root for.

Hahaha, come on now, people... not giving up on the team forever, but let's face it -- the season is all but done.

I love this team and always will, but you didn't throw your hands up at any point last thursday?

I started watching them right around the time Brett came around, so I've been spoiled rotten. Other than the '04 debacle, they've always been (reasonably) good... so I don't know what to do with myself when they suck!

Yeah, I was surprised by this move. They don't typically let guys go that fast, especially 4th round draft picks.

I thought for sure he would have been on the roster till next year. Hoping that this was a 'sophomore slump'.

given that he did nothing during his first year either, I don't think this was a sophomore slump.

Better to admit your mistake and cut your losses than compound your mistake by wasting more time on him. Smart move...

McMillan cut. Rodgers looks like he'll play (gut feeling). If there's a shot at the playoffs he has to. If he gets injured again then so be it. He'll be ready for 2014. The time is now. It makes no sense to sit him and keep losing.

Is McMillan that much worse than MD Jennings? With the scarcity in the safety group already, that guy must've graded really low to get cut. Well, guess it's time for Jarret Bush to take over!

Honestly, I don't think so. Personally I thought McMillan was better.

I am hoping this move means they are impressed with Richardson's play and they will start using him more.

I honestly thought Bush would make a good Safety. He is physical and can cover better then most safety's, but isn't great 1 on 1. In a safety role he wouldn't be asked to cover 1 on 1.

McMillan was good in run support where Jennings is better in coverage. Neither is a good safety but Jennings is more reliable and probably the better backup. This should give Richardson some playing time. We need to see what we have in him. Who knows if he can show that he is reliable in coverage we might already have our Safety to play next to Burnett. If not we'll use a premium pick on Safety. If Richardson looks good maybe just draft a developmental Safety. Richardson has ideal size and athleticism but was used more like a LB in college.
