Gut Reactions: Packers beat up on Vikings

  • Lots to work on but a lot to like.
  • For a team with no weapons, they certainly seemed to score a lot of points.
  • Davante Adams is still open.
  • Seeing the Packers have to take a time out to avoid a delay of game is like coming home.
  • MVS giveth and MVS taketh away (a drop on a 3rd down crossing route? Really? Really.)
  • Thought Wagner held up ok once he got in at right tackle.
  • Tough day for injuries. Hope Kenny and Lane are good.
  • Aaron Rodgers' TD throw to Lazard was just absurd.
  • Mike Pettine. Please don't go to sleep when you have a lead. Thank you.
  • Tough look from the offense early on in the red zone.
  • Garbage call on Savage at the end of the first half.
  • Davante Adams. Still good.
  • So good to watch Za'Darius again.
  • Lancaster quietly had a good game.
  • Epic drive on offense to salt the game away and make it 43-26. That's what I'm talking about.
  • Love this team. Go Pack Go.

Its finally football season!

I was able to watch most of the game. You are right on with all the comments. I missed MVS' drop but saw his catches. When is the last time Packers scored that many points? Lot's to like but you are right on how maddening the timeouts were. And giving up that many that easy garbage points should not happen. And what a garbage call on Savage!!

Is Vikings D that bad or do we have some weapons?! Time will tell. Congrats for now. Let's hope injuries are not severe.

Watching with empty stands didn't make much of a difference.

Great to start with a win.

Offense looked good. Lots of snaps for Deguara.

Defense let down, but this game really was never in doubt in the second half.

YAY FOOTBALL!!!

In Edit:
Check out the TOP advantage for the Packers--41 to 19? Minni gets less than 50 plays? Wooo...

The offense played with focus (aside from the dropped passes) and rhythm I haven't seen in years. They seemed to be playing from ahead of the sticks all game and weren't entirely dependant on Rodgers freelancing.

Grateful for the win BUT:

The last 4 scoring drives for Minn:
9/75 1:58
7/65 2:07
4/77 1:16
3/58 0:14

That's 27 points given up on 4 drives that took a whopping 5 minutes and 35 seconds. That's usually how long it takes for ONE scoring drive, not FOUR! That's ridiculous. Not to mention 3 for 3 on 2 pt conversions and giving up 24 points in the 4th quarter. This defense needs lots of work. They're not going to score 40+ points every game. Nice to see some vintage Rodgers!!

13Time -we were posting at the same time. I didn’t like the way the defense finished the game at all. They gave up 3 TDs in the 4th quarter way too easily. Reminded me of the Capers days.
However, I’ll take the win. GPG! Thanks, Since ‘61

They're cruising to the win...then give up 3 TDs and 3 2pt. conversions in the 4th? I hope that's not a pattern that continues. Great to get the win on the road though! This could be a special offense. Nice to see Dillon and Deguara get their feet wet.

Agree with most of this but I don’t like the way the defense finished the game. 3 TDs for 24 points is just not good football.
Yes, a win is a win but this should have been a dominant performance for the Packers. Our 4th quarter defense reminded me too much of Caper’s defense. TDs were given up much too easily.
I know it’s the first game but there is plenty of work for this defense to do to tighten up. We can’t expect to score 43 points every week.
In any case Rodgers, Jones and Adams look to be in mid-season form which is a great sign. Lazard looking good. MVS still inconsistent.
We’re 1-0 and I’ll take it. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

Given the departure of Clark, the absence of Greene and a rookie UDFA starting at ILB 2 I expected much worse.

The reality is that nearly all the yards came in the drive at the end of the first half and in the 4th quarter and we were playing soft prevent. In a D predicated on pressure I think that’s a particularly porous proposition. That said, I guess I can’t argue that it didn’t work, only that it is not pleasant to watch and flatters the Vikings. Cook only averaged 4 ypc despite Clark and Greene and Cousins was under 100 yards passing going into the 4th.

Rodgers was on the bench for a long time too! What of it? You get a potential starting QB whenever you get the chance. The worst thing you can do is wait till you need a QB to try finding one! That's how you go into a decade long slump!

You wanna know how Love is helping the team? He provided Rodgers the motivation he needed to become great again! If Love does nothing in the NFL except provide Rodgers motivation for another 4 or 5 yrs, it was worth it!

Stroh beat me to it. I was gonna say that the drafting of Love really energized Rodgers who went back to 2010 films to find out how he could improve. One thing he found was that stronger legs help his passes to be more accurate.

If the Packers offense don't run up the score on MIN, the Packers defense doesn't give up easy yards in the fourth.

It's the same reason the Packers put any points on the board against the 49ers in last year's NFC Championship game.

If the Packers don't pull far ahead by the half and leading into the 3rd, the defense plays an entirely different game.

I'm not buying into this theory all that much. THe Packers offense scored twice in the 4th They really had to score twice to keep the game out of reach of some crazy finish. Even with that, the final margin was single digits.

Think about it like this: Including the inability to stop even one of the 2 pt conversions, it's like the Packers defenses gave up 4 scores (3 TDs and a FG) on 3 drives. That's concerning no matter how far out front they were.

Hank - I agree. They gave up 3 TDs in less than 4 minutes of running time. That’s really poor defense. I don’t care what the score is. There is no guarantee that they would have played tighter in a close game. It reminded me of the way Capers defense would give games away late in the 4th quarter. Thanks, Since ‘61.

I guess my point is the play call is a bigger factor than the talent.

You can fix play calling. You can't summon up talent that isn't there.

Caveat: Is Kenny Clark okay? His loss affects the entire defense.

At least 3 times, I found myself marveling at throws others guys won't even attempt, much less complete. At least for this week, he turned back the clock to the days when 40 points was not uncommon for the Packers offense. If he can continue to play like that, the weak WR group and suspect run defense won't matter that much.

So much for Defense ahead of Offense... Nags I like your summary of today's game... A wins a win, we move on and hopefully correct any mistakes we made today next week. Who needs exhibition games...? Maybe Rodgers is right..? Although to many injuries to start the season. Lions up next, I'm sure they don't want to open up the season down 0-2. Packers better not fall a sleep on them. For the Vikings I would say Eric Kendricks had a great game. That is how you play MLB.

This is only the second or third game we've seen the LeFleur's offense actually executed for 4 whole quarters, and each time it's looked like an well-oiled machine that does nothing but methodically move the chains.

Here's hoping we see more of that and Clark and Lane get healthy and back on the field soon.. Although Lane had the look on his face like he was thinking his year was over.

All in all, Aaron Jones had a good game, but to my eyes, his cutting ability and COD skills did not look right. I wonder if he went into today's game with a tender ankle, or maybe it's just rust.

Pettine's last year in GB. This D is Caper's D. Hope we don't give him the same leash Capers had. Get a real D coordinator already. Bad against the run. Zone D when ahead letting teams score as if they were playing against a HS team. That zone D at the end of games has been the bane of GB for decades. Stop it already! Yes, the offense is good. But for once can we give Rodgers a decent defense?

Platinum game ball for AR: He took the short stuff, made beautiful long throws, and took care of the ball.

Time of possession: Love it, and love even more that we converted it to touchdowns as the game got rolling.

O-line: Are we that good, or is Minnesota that terrible?

Receivers: Nice game from Adams, except for the one drop at the goal line; MVS: alternated between great and terrible; at least AR went back to him after the two bad drops, but I still don't know how much trust he's earned. Lazard comes through again.

Defense: Aside from the two big plays from Alexander, not very encouraging. I think the idea of a prevent defense is to keep the plays in front of you, make the tackle, and force the offense use up clock--not let the opposing offense score a touchdown almost immediately after you do on several occasions. Definitely need to do better than force two punts, although that's one more than Minny did.

All in all, a surprisingly easy win--happy to have it.

I think we'll find out of the next 16 weeks. But for this week, the Packers o-line deserves to be singled out. They started the game down one guy and lost two more. It didn't de-rail an incredible offensive performance.

Always terrific to start off the season with a road win over a tough divisional rival like Minnesota! The defense made some plays, but also allowed the Vikings to stay in the game....like others have noted, eerily reminiscent of the Dom Capers era.

The injuries -- especially to Clark -- are worrisome. Let's hope Lancaster and Keke can step up if Clark is out for a prolonged time.

Rodgers looked superb. Perhaps it's his way of saying "I'm not washed up yet," or Aaron Rodgers just being Aaron Rodgers. MVS could actually end up as the No. 2 WR instead of Lazard if he can fix his issues with drops.

Too bad the Lions let duh Bears comeback. Oh well, time to slay the Lions and go to 2-0 next week! So glad football is back; what a welcome distraction to what's been a crazy 2020.

#1 My favorite part of the game was watching Rodgers throw to the RBs instead of trying for the jackpot.

Defense. "Kenny and the JAGs" are now just the JAGs. It showed in the second half too.

Bad day for the Rodgers haters.

Bad drop for Adams at goal line and 2 drops (one drive killer) for MVS.

I expecting a lot worse for the first live competition against a team.

I wanted them to feature Dillon for one drive in the 4th after seeing him knock Kendricks earlier. 4th quarter, D is tired, don't get fancy, just let the road grader go to work.

The offense looked to be in rhythm and firing on all cylinders, excepting MVS' inconsistency and converting TDs in the red zone early. Rodgers looks like Rodgers. Loved seeing the stuff with Lazard and Ervin out of the backfield. Defense had a horrible first drive, good rest of the half, then cruddy second half.

A win is a win is a win, especially against a divisional opponent, and the Packers were the better team today. Just want to see a complete game of football out of them.

My thoughts.

1. Great win to start the season.

2. Top ten offense, top ten special teams, bottom ten defense.

3. MVS, just catch the ball.

4. Why draft a QB in the first round?

5. Hope injuries aren't serious.

6. Officiating hasn't improved. Same old same old.

7. Don't understand the OL shuffle to start the game.

8. This team wins because of Aaron Rodgers, not MLF, not BG and not MM.

9. Looked like every time out was used to prevent a delay of game penalty.

10. Did Oren Burks even play?

Rodgers to Adams - great.

Good game plan. Horizontal movement pre-snap usually worked. Deguara block early in the game taking out two Vikings downfield was impressive. The O could have scored 50 if MVS had hands.

Defense looks like last years sieve. Bend but don't break is fine, but bend and break doesn't work. The easy three they gave up just before half should never happen.

Fortunately the balance offensive attack was more than enough.

The D-line without Clark isn't anything I want to see going forward. They need to add someone this week (Snacks ?) now that veteran contracts aren't guaranteed.

Red Zone was very concerning.. That Safety was HUGE.. Turning point in game , after awful red zone execution and play calling .. Why didn't Dillion get a opportunity down there? think that is one of the reasons they drafted him.. maybe to early in season? ..worried about a fumble ? Without some drops the game was closer than it should have been,,, all in all very nice / important win! AR looked amazing !

I thought so too - but it was the first quarter of the first game - so I have to give Lafleur some benefit of the fact that what he tried didnt work - Would like to see Dillon push the pile but the Oline didnt and has never teally got much push - even AR did a QB sneak though.

If you look at my old posts you will see that I loved our receivers. I dont think that we needed to get a receiver in the first couple of picks. Now whether or not those 2 picks become the difference makers that you expect out of first or second rounders will be seen in the future but liked what we saw out of the few plays that they were in for. Now if MVS can just catch the easy balls every single time our guys will be DYNOMITE.

Our defense is scary bad - and sometimes scary good - but mostly scary bad.

Squad looked solid running lafleurs offense for 4 quarters. But rodgers taking the checkdown early and often instead of forcing the deep ball actually opened up the deep ball!!! And those sweet end arounds and 2 hole blasts kept em guessing all damn day. I loved going back to mvs and just trusting your wrs to catch the ball. Even after a drop. The vikings corners are awful.but still. And the davante backshoulder and out routes looked just like rodgers to jordy. When all else fails just hit davante on a lil square out. Hopefully this big boy daylon mack can come in and eat some blocks if kenny clark is out for a while, or even if hes not.

Seems like it is a little early to be sodown on the defense so much! Just hope Clark gone not too long!

• Defense – disappointing letting 3 TD’s that fast/running prevent defense, but to do what they did without Kenny, Greene, starting rookie ILB & keep Cook 4 yds is still impressive. Not the worst defense out there as some are claiming.
• Swerving - doing his thing
• MVS – can’t give up on him yet but jeez, those perfectly thrown passes others like Foster, Taylor & Begelton are champing at the bit to show what they can do with those
• Time outs used to prevent DOG – after an entire offseason to correct, we all need to accept this is just who AR is. As long as he performs in all other areas like he did today, hard to knock him
• Hardly any penalties shows MLF doing good pep work.

Overall, good jobs guys. Onto the lions.

Early on the Packers using their smallest back at the goal line with a makeshift O line , should have used Dillon the adrenaline would have carried him into the end zone , also when the Vikings were on the goal line why is Pettine playing the linebackers deep in the end zone? Kevin King was less than average today, Rodgers was Rodgers , 1 st pick should have been a D lineman or linebacker .

Great Win! No preseason and still, this went well. Rodgers? Great game. He seems to have bought in. Still issues with taking the game clock down to zero.

Red zone issues

Kenny injured, shit.

83 makes me nervous

Wanted to see more of Dillion short yardage and goal line.

How much did RG play on defense?

Lazard has great hands.

Impressed TOP and Timely calls on defense (sack for safety)

Go Pack

The Good:
1- The Vikings did their best social distancing defense! Davante was not good but great. Tied Don Hudson team record 14 receptions.
2- Aaron freakin Rodgers.

The Bad:
1- Where was Rashan Gary or Preston Smith? C’mon Packer Aaron we raved all off-season that this was a coming out season for Gary. He was barely noticeable. Preston Smith was also pretty invisible. I can give him a pass because he’ll get it going.
2- Run defense still looks soft and will really be a problem depending on Kenny Clark’s injury.

The Ugly:
1- MVS dropped Two passes one on the crossing route which would have been a 1st down and one long pass that looked like six until he dropped it. He redeemed himself later but consistently inconsistent has been his trademark. This is year 3, not year 1. Time to turn a corner.

Kirksey wasnt GREAT out there today but he was noticeably/consistently more active than Martinez. Barnes made a HELL of a play on that screen to Cook. Thats an undrafted rookie making a major play on an All Pro RB, I was impressed with Barnes today - still wish he was Patrick Queen though.

The 2 best acquisitions the Packers made this offseason were re signing Tyler Ervin and pissing off Aaron Rodgers.

Deguara, Dillon and Runyan looked somewhat promising.

Pettine sucks

I watched parts of several games today and it seemed clear that most defenses were not playing well. I think we need to wait a month to see what we have on defense.

Cliches usually suck and aren't as true as you would think. But this one is:

Defense wins championships.

And nothing about that defense gives the impression it's capable of helping that cause. Without at least an above average defense, you have little chance at winning the superbowl. I don't make the stats. That's just how it's always been in the superbowl era. Its tough to go against the kansas cities of the world when we are getting gashed by minnesota. On average, it took them under two snaps to get a first down. They averaged almost a yard and a half more per snap than green bays offense. On cooks touchdown, you can watch alexander give up on the play when he could have at least hit cook 2 to 3 yards away from the endzone. What if that hit causes a fumble? That defense lacked heart, effort, and coaching.

Football is back baby! Rodgers goes 364 yards and 4 tds with some terrible drops. Dude has it going on early.

Is the jet sweep a permanent play in the offense? It was used often.

I had to think whether Scott punted at all, oh yeah one. Over 41 minutes time of possession. Other than some red zone inefficiencies early what a day by the offense.

The defense had a couple sacks and pick but looked vulnerable inside, outside and through the air. Work to do there.

Random thoughts: When Rodgers runs this scheme he is deadly. Damn, the only luck Lane Taylor has is bad. Offensives are always ahead of defense in the early part of the season. More so with stripped down schemes on both sides of the ball. Refs swallowed their whistles and let them play, good call. What was MLF thinking with that OL lineup. This is defacto preseason ball for the next 5 weeks? Nagler was right (sigh...) I need a (root) beer.....

I can not remember the Pack starting the season on offense so crisp. They are routinely slow starters. I like the quick flow of the game. It keeps the pressure on the opposing "D". We saw a lot of good things today from ML offense. I don't know what happened to Sternberger but he is non existent. Degura showed some nice things already. I like all the mixing of different positions to create mismatches. Dillon was made for the goal line attempt so lets use him for it. Lazard catches everything. Adams was near perfect. MVS brought back his T-Rex arms and short armed a sure T.D. LOL. He made a couple good catches for some points. Rodgers executed the offense at a very high level. I don't know what the deal with time outs and play calls but what is wrong with keyed wrist band to call sheet and just say a number and Rodgers looks at band and calls full play out instead of repeating it twice? That is gonna lose some games sooner or later if it doesn't get fixed. Pettine only has the players he has but the DL was leaky as advertised. Gute go get snacks and another starter before it's to late. I liked Rodgers cadence drawing off sides multiple times and free plays. I hope K. Clarks injury is not to bad. Those type injuries will be limiting. I liked Alexanders sack/ safety and INT. Thielin put the hurt on our secondary to often. I did not see EQ play? I hope all our injured guys are back soon.

This game would have been even more one-sided without the numerous "big play" drops. Everyone contributed to the problem and I can only hope the receivers coach takes notice. Didn't seem like Rodgers got all that pissed off though - took it in stride and then tossed another dart.

I counted at least 19 points that was left on the field for green bay. The vikings were lucky it wasn't a bigger blowout.

Wow - Great Start - Tempered enthusiasm here as the season wouldn't of been over if they laid an egg. 1 game - one win - on to the next game.

initial takeaways yet very small sample size...

The scheme is working and the Draft choices were dead on. Lazard and MVS (if he at least drops less) are both legit#2 rec.
ARod ran the offense like a brilliant maistro. Loved the early check downs, jet sweeps and chain moving outs. They,IMO help lead to all the downfield success later in the game.
Huge props to ALL the OL, not only played well but overcame a great deal of adversity. Is Wagner the real deal? Need tape review to really say. Was and still is a real concern
More Dillon please, Pack still showed some weakness in short yardage runs, more in the instances when everyone knows its a run. liked how AJones ran and did have some short yardage success.
Until Dillon can prove he can pass protect anywhere near Jamal, he snaps will be limited. Honestly, love Jamal the person not as much as a RB. He's good but lacking. That said he's an absolute beast in pass protect, Ajones did his part as well.
Jury's out on the D. To be fair it is unacceptable to run such a pathetic prevent. We get it, us fans aren't stupid. Big lead, keep it in front of you - -yada, yada, but as pointed out in a post the time and yards allowed were BRUTAL. We should temper that with 3 quarters of very strong defense. Cooks had what 60 some yards? The stopped the run from possibly the #1 back in the league.
The same DC who called those first 3 quarters of brilliance, including the safety blitz that was genius, is the guy who needs to get that prevent D cleaned up. Still don't get the lack of faith in our DC. Huge jump in improving the D from 2018 to 2019. Today's performance really kept the Pack in the Game and then never let the Vikes back in it,
Kenny Clark was paid as the best NT and it showed why when he went out. Why wasn't Mack on the active? They had ZERO answers as far as personnel.
Announcers sucked, why did the Pack get the worst Fox booth? NFC North gets no respect. Packers and Arod get no respect.
This team looks like they are going to demand respect.

Lets Go Pack!!

We're all getting excited over the beautifully orchestrated offense and the return of GOAT Rodgers, and it was great to see. But we saw it for years with only one trip to the SB. Pettine in his time here seems little better than Capers and if we allow him to continue we'll again be destroyed in the playoffs because playoff teams also have great offenses. Remember the shootout in Arizona? Remember the embarrassing losses to Kaepernick?... The destruction just last year by the 49ers?... Let's enjoy the rebirth of Rodgers, but there should be an outcry about the defense so loud that MLF can hear it and demand better from Pettine... and Gute. After the draft and free agency, we were still left without a sidekick for Clark and without two decent LB's. Pettine and Gute should have figured out by now that Lancaster and Lowry are JAGS. That they wasted a pick on Rashan Gary who is a mediocre pass rusher and too small to play inside. Gute needs to find a big body that can play and Pettine has to stop selling out to stop the pass by giving up on the run. I love the offense. I also loved McCarthy's offense when we ran five receivers out there and Rodgers was winning MVP's. But the only year we won the SB we had Woodson and Nick Collins and Picket and Raji and Desmond Bishop. We had a defense. I only hope that MLF isn't only an offensive-minded genius. This was a less than satisfying win for me and I hope it was for MLF as well.

Some of the guys don't think there was a problem with the defense. They gave up 24 points in the 4th quarter. The prevent defense, which is supposed to prevent quick scores, gave up quick scores. Minnesota possessed the ball for only 5 min and 15 seconds on those three touchdowns, an average of about 1 min and 45 seconds each. But hey, that's the prevent defense. They must have been running the prevent defense on the three 2 point conversions as well as they were pretty much walk in scores. It's early and I'm very glad the offense dominated. But I want a superbowl team. Hopefully they figure out the defense, because without it, it's not a superbowl team. I don't have any faith in this defense after watching the 4th quarter fireworks from a vanilla scheme with chunk plays that looked like the 49ers game with their exotic scheme. Let alone trying to match firepower with KC. We need a top 10 D to have a shot. Let's go!
