Saints Sign QB Patrick Ramsey, Reach Deal With Jimmy Graham

The New Orleans Saints announced the signings of veteran quarterback Patrick Ramsey, and that third-round tight end Jimmy Graham has agreed to terms.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Both Ramsey and Graham are represented by Jimmy Sexton.

Ramsey, a 2001 first-round pick by the Washington Redskins, was signed by the Tennessee Titans last April, but was released four weeks into the 2009 season. Ramsey finished last season with the Detroit Lions, and has also had stints with the New York Jets (2006-07) and Denver Broncos (2007-08).

Ramsey, who is expected to be the top back-up to Drew Brees this season, has completed 56% of his 913 pass attempts for 5,930 yards, with 35 touchdowns and 30 interceptions for a career passer rating of 74.9.

Second-year quarterback Chase Daniel and 2010 seventh-round pick Sean Canfield will compete for the #3 quarterback role.

Graham spent four seasons playing basketball at the University of Miami, and turned down six-figure offers to play hoops overseas to spend last season playing football for the Hurricanes.

In his first season of football since his freshman year of high school, the 6-6, 260-pound Graham caught 17 passes for 213 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Graham is still raw to the position, but displayed outstanding athleticism at the 2010 Scouting Combine, running the 40-yard dash in 4.53-seconds and displaying a 38.5” vertical leap and 10’00” broad jump. Graham will need to improve his strength to be an effective blocker at the next level.

Graham has the physical tools become the next Tony Gonzalez or Antonio Gates, and with Jeremy Shockey and David Thomas ahead of him on the depth chart, the time to develop and hone his skills at the NFL level.
