Lions Sign K Dave Rayner

Free agent kicker Dave Rayner beat out Shaun Suisham during a tryout on Tuesday, and will sign with the Detroit Lions, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

The Lions were looking for a replacement for veteran Jason Hanson, who injured the medial collateral ligament in his kicking leg during Sunday's 23-20 overtime loss to the New York Jets.

A sixth-round pick (202nd overall) out of Michigan State by the Indianapolis Colts in 2005, Rayner has connected on 42-of-59 field goal attempts during a 43-game career with the Colts, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers, and Cincinnati Bengals.

Rayner has also had stints with the Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins, and was with the Lions during the 2008 pre-season, connecting on 6 of his 7 field goal attempts before he was waived after the third pre-season game.

Cornerback Jonathan Wade has been released to add Rayner to the 53-man roster.
