Will Any of the Packers Seventh Round Picks Make the Roster This Year?

The Green Bay Packers made four selections in the seventh and final round of the 2022 NFL Draft. GM Brian Gutekunst added a player at four different positions and took special teams into consideration on some of those picks. But now that the preseason is over and final cuts loom, the question is will any of these four players make the Packers initial 53-man roster.

Here is a look at the Packers four picks in the seventh round of this year’s draft and their chances of making the roster:

S Tariq Carpenter

The Packers selected Carpenter with the 228th overall pick in the draft. The Georgia Tech alum was drafted with the idea of having him contribute on special teams and to make him a hybrid safety/inside linebacker.

Carpenter stands 6’3” and weighs 230 pounds which is big for a safety but a little light for an inside linebacker.

He impressed the coaching staff with his range at OTAs but in training camp and in the preseason, his play was mixed. Carpenter showed he could make plays on special teams and could be effective in the box and near the line of scrimmage especially on running plays.

In pass coverage however, the rookie looked indecisive at times and was slow to react on several plays. He finished the preseason with nine total tackles in three games.

Even though the Packers are thin at safety due to injuries, Carpenter would be a liability in coverage if they put him on the field in Week 1. If he makes the team, it would be for his ability to make plays on special teams and for his long-term potential.

DL Jonathan Ford

Ford stands 6’5” and weighs 338 pounds. He’s a big man who started for three seasons at the University of Miami (Florida) but was not statistically productive. He never had more than 19 total tackles in a season in college and recorded three sacks in five years at Miami, all of them coming in 2019.

Gutekunst also saw Ford’s ability to contribute on special teams which was one of the bigger reasons he drafted him with the 234th overall pick in the draft.

In the preseason, Ford has not stood out, making two unassisted tackles and five overall. He has not gotten pressure on the quarterback or penetrated the opposing backfield often.

The Packers are very deep at defensive line and Ford is behind Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry, Jarran Reed, T.J. Slaton and first-round pick Devonte Wyatt on the depth chart. Players like Jack Heflin and Chris Slayton have also been more productive than Ford in preseason games.

Ford’s hopes of making the roster rest solely on this ability to contribute on special teams this year. He is more likely to be on the practice squad than the 53-man roster.

OT Rasheed Walker

Walker was the Packers third selection in the seventh round and the 249th overall pick in the draft. He was a three-year starter at Penn State who has great natural tools but was inconsistent in college.

Scouts originally graded Walker as a potential higher round pick but his inconsistent play caused him to fall down the draft boards. The Packers were shocked that a player with Walker’s physical tools was still on the board in the seventh round and took him even though they had already added two offensive linemen in this draft.

In the preseason, Walker was inconsistent which is to be expected from a rookie offensive tackle.

The Packers will likely keep nine or 10 offensive linemen but Walker is not likely to be one of them. If the Packers brass sees enough potential in Walker, they may keep him on the practice squad.

WR Samori Toure

The Packers final pick in the 2022 draft was wide receiver Samori Toure. Gutekunst selected the former Nebraska star with the 258th overall pick. Toure led the Big 10 in average yards per catch in 2021 and demonstrated the ability to catch long passes downfield. He has experience returning kicks in college but was not called upon to do that in the preseason.

Toure got off to a slow start in training camp but played better as camp went on. He led all Packers receivers with nine catches and 125 yards in the preseason.

The Packers usually keep six or seven wide receivers and despite his good preseason play, Toure must overcome long odds to make the roster. Allen Lazard, Sammy Watkins, Randall Cobb and Amari Rodgers are all ahead of him on the depth chart along with fellow rookies Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs and veteran Juwann Winfree.

Toure is 24 which is older than most NFL rookies. The Packers may try to get him on the practice squad if he doesn’t make the team because of the potential he showed.

It is unclear if any of the four Packers picks in the seventh round of this year’s draft will make the team’s initial 53-man roster. It will certainly be an interesting week ahead full of tough decisions for Gutekunst and the coaching staff.

No. They will all get through waivers too. Caleb Jones is the only player I believe whom could potentially be claimed. 6'9" 375 lbs men don't grow on trees.

Jonathan Ogden was 6'-9" 345 lbs but he was a freak athlete. Jones reminds me more of a Phil Loadholt type.

Toure is one who I think could get claimed, but if he does, he does. He reminds me a lot of Abby - lots of technical skills as a receiver, but lacking that first step burst and with a slender enough frame that injuries will probably always be an issue.

Caleb Jones does really intrigue me, though. Guys that big shouldn't be able to move like he does, and I could see him playing in goal line situations either as a tackle, a jumbo TE, or as a FB a la Raji. If GB doesn't have a spot for him, SOMEONE will.

Toure should without doubt. He’s got potential and was a steal in an overloaded WR draft and he’s proven that. On what he’s done in terms of deep plays, catches in traffic and positional versatility combined with catch rate, he can help now and will help more in future. The drop in game 2 was the exception in his case. Importantly, he’s not a marginal athlete with those traits either.

Walker and Carpenter should get a chance on the PS having missed most of camp. Ford disappointed once the games came along. I’d give priority to Slayton on the PS at that position

It’s interesting how PFF saw our top 5 on O:

WR Samori Toure: 77.1
C Josh Myers: 71.9
OT Rasheed Walker: 71.4
TE Tyler Davis: 71.2
OT Caleb Jones: 71.1

To me Walker needs more time, but there is no way Toure should be exposed (or Jones as a LT with that level of play).

In agreement on everything you shared. Wish we could have seen more of Walker in pre-season but since he will end up on our PS it probably is best he did not get any more reps.

Probably not. It would be a shame not to keep Toure, but he's not a contributor on special teams, whereas Winfree is (although I'm not sure how much, really). We've seen Winfree make some nice blocks on offense, but most importantly, Aaron Rodgers seems to like him...which bodes well for him being on the final roster.

Ben Fennell tweeted out before the KC game that he has been impressed with Winfree and his ability and willingness to do the dirty work.'

Now, that doesn't speak to whether Winfree should make the 53. As a receiver, my answer is no. I wouldn't be shocked to see that he made the 53, but I would be disappointed. I was pulling for him all camp, so this isn't stubbornness speaking.

One issue with Toure is those 7 reps on the bench. But that can be remedied and he has good height. Could be as simple as going for it (keeping guys who can help the most now) versus long-term sustainability. Toure has upside: if the main consideration is the latter, he should probably make the 53. PS would be fine, assuming he slides into that slot.

Biggest misconception about making the 53 with the last 4 or 5 players is not ability today but who does the organization think will get poached during cuts.

1. Carpenter: absolutely no one is poaching this man to be on their 53
2. Ford : absolutely no one is poaching this man to be on their 53
3. Walker : This is the one player I would worry about the most. Big man with all the ability in the world but developmental . I could see this being 50/50 shot a good team that can afford to develop him poach him
4.Toure seems like a player, but almost every team has a toure on their team right now thinking the same thing I doubt he would be poached but WR is a hot commodity so who knows would worry more about Walker
5. I know he is not on this list , but with the film Caleb Jones has put out their and his size and premium position I can guarantee he will be poached udfa with 4 or 5 years control at minimal cost .

I know this sounds weird but if your worried about Toure being poached cut all the rb execpt dillion and jones and I can guarantee you someone like a Goodson, or Taylor or even both of them will be available.

I think you hit the nail right on in that when the cuts happen there will be 10-15 guys just like Goodson, Winfree and Toure out there. Almost every team has one of those.

I disagree about your assessment of Toure as a combination of athletic ability and talent that is commonplace. In fact, his mix of deep speed, positional versatility, ability to track balls in the air and to adjust his body to extend his catch radius is extremely rare. Teams, including us, have had bunches of seasons where we can’t find one WR with that combination. There’s a reason MVS stuck around and now gets $10 million a year.

Teams have lots of Kumerows: marginal athletes with route and ball skills or great athletes with no ball or hand skills (Moore). Teams are desperate for Toure types. The one to our south, for a start. Sometimes rules of thumb can be dangerous. Not all WRs are alike. This is one of those instances and we now have plenty of film and preseason stats out there to support it.

The rest of your points I agree with .

If your assessment is right, CW, and the coaches agree, then maybe the Packers protect Toure even if they have to cut Winfree and Amari Rodgers and hope they don't get claimed by another team.
If Goodson is seen as having uncommon skills as a playmaker, then maybe cut Taylor and hope he doesn't get claimed. If Taylor is claimed by another team, perhaps Dexter Williams can replace him as about as good.
This is the time of the year I hope the coaches can discern the players who have special talents and exceptional potential, even if they haven't yet set themselves apart -- also including the evaluations of Caleb Jones, Chris Slaton, and Rasheed Walker.
Who will be the next Yosh Nijman or Aaron Jones coming from the back of the Pack to the forefront?

That is fair and honestly I might be over looking this fact good point . I guess if it was my decision how would you feel about this . Let's keep walker and Jones , Lets keep toure but that means we would have to cut 2 of the three Taylor Goodson or Winfree.

Actually in all honesty I would cut Hanson not really sure what this team see's in him back up center ? Jenkins Zach Tom can do this in a pinch and be much better.

Tom should have been at C from the outset, then tried elsewhere. I’d be fine waiving Hanson and putting him on the PS, because I just don’t see their love reflected in performance. I can’t see them doing that though. I would waive Rhyan. He’s got worse not better in games. No one is going to pick him up on waivers despite his draft spot. I think this is more plausible. I’d say the same of Rodgers. By far his best showing and still 4 catches for under 40 yards and some contrived run yards. I agree with PFF, his best is … ok and he’s not getting any more athletic.

Taylor probably wouldn’t be claimed but Hill isn’t a replacement for him and nor is Williams. He’s a very effective hard yards pounder and plus protector and makes key tackles on STs. I think he’s on the roster because they will want him active. I’d waive Rodgers and use Goodson as the option/slot/4th back.

I’d reluctantly waive Winfree. Toure is higher potential and a better athlete and while I think a team like Chicago could pick Winfree up, they probably won’t. Even if they did, I’d rather face him than Toure, even today let alone in future. Winfree is a workhorse not a game changer or big play threat. I am even less daunted by the prospect of having to defend Rodgers. Even with us trying to get him passes, he’s been shut down by 2nd and 3rd stringers and largely by 4ths as well. His yards per route run is dire. I think we could cope.

So Goodson for Rodgers, Toure over Winfree.

Jordy was 4.51. I suspect Toure has enough speed that he can get deep if he runs a good route, uses a nice head fake, or otherwise causes the DB to take a false step or even lean the wrong way. He isn't MVS.

His time was 4.44, just to clarify.

Have you watched him? He’s been getting behind players all camp, but you can see the speed in games too.

As far as background goes he achieved the second -highest yards-per-catch average in Nebraska history (19.5) last year in his only season with them. According to Pro Football Focus, he was tied for 10th in the draft class with 13 receptions on passes thrown 20-plus yards downfield. He dropped only two passes.

For context Doubs’ 40 time was 0.02 seconds slower (4.46). Watson’s was 0.08 faster, MVS was 0.07 faster. Winfree was 0.09 slower. I do think Doubs’ time is slower than he actually is.

One point I think is being missed about Toure is it isn’t just his long speed. Toure has too end agility that one doesn’t often associate with a player of his build. His lateral movement and change of direction testing is outstanding.

Toure’s three-cone time of 6.77 seconds would have ranked him third amongst his position group at the combine, and his 4.22 short shuttle would have placed him fourth among the receivers in Indianapolis. This is not a dime-a-dozen athlete.

CW, as a Packer fan I certainly hope that you are correct and that Toure develops (as a Packer) into an excellent WR. I agree that he has looked good with lots of potential. But that assessment is based on a few preseason games vs 2nd and 3rd stringers (and of course playing with 2nd and 3rd stringers).

And there are plenty of guys trying to establish themselves either as a rookie or now in their 2nd or 3rd attempt to get off practice squads or to stay on some team's "53". Speed and athletic ability can be found throughout the NFL but only some of those guys become starting NFL WR's or RB's for multiple seasons.

It is too soon in this young player's career to have a definitive opinion but the scouts and GM's from 32 NFL teams felt that 257 other college players should be drafted ahead of him. They are not always correct, but the odds of him being "special" are low.

The odds of beating the draft are low. However, they are not so low as to be dismissed as players like Bakh, Runyon, Aaron Jones show. Just as one can be beaten by the draft, teams di regularly beat it with picks. I would say Doubs has a very very good chance to be another example.

Although there is a lot of hard work and analysis that goes into draft boards, I think we all know that there is an element of subjectivity and that hype plays a role in players rising and falling. This year there was also an unusual volume of players with an extra year in college.

That’s why one has to look at what the player does once one has him. How does he move, does he beat others one knows can perform. In Toure’s case his performance throughout camp and games has been one of getting open and displaying an ability to catch the ball deep or over the middle in multiple roles. In doing so he’s displayed a plus ability to track the ball and impressive ability to use agility to expand his catch radius and adjust.

Toure isn’t perfect, he’s got room to polish, but he just keeps getting himself in a position to make plays in the red zone, in traffic across the middle and going vertical. Those are players you keep however one finds them, as a 7th, a 4th or a UDFA.

There’s a reason that he’s our leading preseason receiver as a rookie and it’s not because we schemed him there or gave him the most snaps, it’s because he gets separation and runs decent routes and, with one notable exception in game 2, catches the ball. On Thursday he was deemed 8 for 8 on catchable balls.

That’s why you keep him and why others will be willing to if we expose him. His draft position is already shown to be a poor indicator of potential on plenty of film.

Winfree we know what we have in him, which is good, reliable & consist player. He is reliable but he does not have 'a lot' of upside. I think he has peaked and there will not be a whole lot of improvement. Maybe I am wrong!

Toure is in a different category than Winfree as he is good now with way more potential upside. If it comes down to the two of them I wouldn't hesitate to take Toure. I very much like the idea of Toure, Watson, Rogers, and Doubs moving forward after this season. Add another Day 2 WR next year and that is a good bunch to grow with.

I also have to add that I agree with some posters that 'Too Tall Jones" should be protected. Walker should not be protected. You can never have too many OT's. I don't think Walker was able to show much to teams that passed him by in the draft to all of a sudden say we are going to take him. Next year, Walker very well could be a keeper. Some other guys like Heflin and Slayton I say try trading for whatever you can get for them prior to Tuesday's deadline. At least one of them if not both of them.

I think Goodson has to stay on 53 as he can be used in so many ways. Taylor is a keeper but isn't going to get much playing time on Offense as long as Dillon is healthy. I think Goodson would be picked off the PS quicker than Taylor. At the same time losing Taylor could have some real negative impact if Dillon got hurt.

Be very interesting to see how Watson is doing in practice? Will Sammy Watkins make the cut? I have seen nothing from him and even reporters at practice haven't said much about the guy. If Doubs, Toure and Watson are showing enough I don't know that Watkins is a slam dunk like many think. I wouldn't be surprised to see an Interior OL be cut that maybe we automatically think will make the 53, particularly with Jenkins back.

Main thing is the team is talented and outside of a questionable RG, RT position, FG kicker, and back-up at Edge & Safety the team is pretty set.

Winfree will make the 53. Toure, Jones, Slayton, Walker and Carpenter make the PS. Ford may get cut, depending on what the coaches saw from him and what they think his upside is. Goodson and Taylor both make the PS as I think GB expects Hill to be back. Someone else will be demoted to PS, if Hill can play, as expected.

I have the highest praise for Toure. Not only does he get open. He can TAKE A HIT. His feet and separation have been terrific. And if they don't keep him. They will keep re-drafting Wr for the next 3 years. Because MVS- StBrown- Adams wanted out. The Money for a Wr has gone through the roof. St. Brown is now considered the #2 Wr for the bears. And so it goes.
Toure said he'd welcome playing on the STs. Yet, we're still seeing him getting less playing time. Why? To push the draft status of Amari Rodgers. To push the development of lesser talent. To keep the Door at Wr revolving. Especially the slot.
I would put the rest of the 7 rounders on the Ps. But the guy who has a chance is T. Carpenter. The Reason; Special Teams.

I agree…it seems many are hung up on the fact AR8 is a third round pick, thus should have more opportunities to prove himself. Never mind the fact Toure (and Doubs) bring more to the WR position than AR8. I saw the Saints and Chiefs games. AR8 did show improvement against the Chiefs but I’m not sold on his “potential.”

This reminds me of the Brian Brohm vs. Matt Flynn debate years ago. Brohm was a second round pick and Flynn was a seventh round pick the same year. Many in the front office were pushing for Brohm over Flynn because of Brohm’s second round status. Never mind the fact (sound familiar?), Flynn out-performed Brohm at every opportunity.

BOLD roster predictions for final cuts:
1. Sammy Watkins may be the #4 WR on this roster, after Lazard, Cobb, and Doubs. And he is on a 1-year contract. I think there is a real chance of cutting Watkins and keeping Toure.
2. I would cut or trade jake Hanson and keep Walker / Jones. I think the Hanson-hype this summer is much like Ben Braden.
3, We can do better than Tyler Davis. Cut him and see who shows up on other team's cuts. If not, you can resign him later. NOBODY is going to claim the guy, after his disastrous preseason.
4. Heflin is a keeper, and Slayton makes the PS.
5. Bye Bye Rico. Runs like a Cheetah plays like Jane

Just a side note: why are QB3s so lovable? Boyle, Benkert, Efling, ...

I believe the packers will load up the PS with 2 RBs. And guys that they know Need development.
I also feel that they carry borderline players for the STs. So this is my prediction.

2 QBs = Rodgers Love
2 RBs = Jones, Dillon,
8 Wrs = Lazard , Cobb, Watkins, Watson, Doubs, Toure, Rodgers, Winfree- ST
4 Tes = Tonyan, Deguara, Lewis, Davis
9 OL. = Bakhtiari, Jenkins, Nijman, Runyan, Myers, Newman, Tom, Rhyan, Hanson,

5 DL = Clark, Reed, Lowry, Slaton, Wyatt,
5 OLB = Gary, Smith, Gavin, Galeai, Enagbare,
5 ILB = Campbell, Walker, McDuffie, Barnes, Summers (ST)
5 CB = Alexander, Douglas, Stokes, Jean-Charles, Thomas, (ST)
5 S =. Amos, Savage, Davis, Abernathy, Carpenter,(ST)

3 ST = Crosby, O’Donnell, LS CoCo

Hill will be back, but we need to consider that RBs have historically been less than themselves for a few months after returning from ACLs, particularly RBs whose style is centered on rapid cuts and explosion.

From my previous comments you will know that I’m not in agreement that Rodgers has justified a spot. I’d swap him for Goodson and use Goodson as an option/slot and have Doubs/Watson return punts/kicks.

I’m not sure about Hanson l, but they will keep him and I’m at the point where Rhyan was bad enough on Thursday that I’d risk waiving him. That leaves Hanson and Tom as G backups, but Jenkins will provide options. We are not going to play Rhyan anyway. I’d keep Jones instead. I like Walker, but I’m reluctantly willing to risk him after so limited a camp, little film and some doubts about his current durability: I think he’d slip through.

Otherwise, that’s a pretty fair list, though I think that the team will keep Taylor. I’m not going to quibble about Galeai or your choice of Summers over Gafford and other “ST” choices simply because I think OLB is essentially a toss up with no great options and RBs really key ST wants and mix of capabilities are so hard to read at this point.

I don’t like the fact that the back up corners are all inside types. I don’t like the S group at all except for STs. There no one I’ve seen cover deep even barely adequately (Abernathy perhaps but I’ve not seen it) I think we will see a signing there. I’ve proposed King as a back up S/CB, but others are possible. I’d not be surprised to see an OLB arrive either.

I agree on Rodgers. And I felt Jones, Rhyan, and Walker need work. And Work keeps them on the GB Ps.
Jones must show he can control his weight. And the best way to keep him working. Is Risk him. Because he won't start.

No offense, and not saying your wrong on that roster, but if we keep 8 WRs I’m gonna puke.

I think it comes down to how back-up center and the health of Bakhtiari and Jenkins are going to affect the number of offensive linemen are on the 53. Hanson doesn't look NFL ready to me (especially at guard.) Can Tom or Rhyan play center in a pinch? Caleb Jones and Rasheed Walker look like better prospects than Hanson. Jenkins, of course, could play center if healthy. One question might be how much trust the Packers have in the young talent they have at tackle.

Also:

* Carpenter has a better chance of making the 53 than Ty Summers

* I don't see the Pack keeping more than 7 WRs -maybe 6 (which means Toure out)

* Need 3 RBs and 6 CBs

* Tyler Davis may be headed to the PS

* Trash can full of dirt!!!

Tom played Center. But they want Hanson. And I like Jones better than Hanson. Yet, they played Jones at LT more than RT. And he was a RT in college with some Lt. Ento was my 6th choice at Cb. He has Tackling issues and a bad Toe. If they don't keep Toure for the slot. It will haunt them for years.
