Was Sunday's performance the final nail in the coffin for Joe Barry?

The defense laid a big ole egg in an important game. Shocker.

In an all-important game for playoff implications, the defense for the Green Bay Packers let the team down in a major way. Stop me if you have read that before. The Packers were without star cornerback Jaire Alexander for the sixth consecutive game, but I don’t think his presence would have made that much of a difference Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a performance that should seal Joe Barry’s fate as the team’s defensive coordinator.

During the team’s three-game winning streak, which vaulted them into the playoff picture, the defense was able to get to opposing quarterbacks with pressure and forced turnovers. Over the team’s last two games, both losses, Barry & Co. made the two opposing quarterbacks look much better than they are. New York Giants undrafted quarterback Tommy Devito displayed shades of prime Michael Vick (slight exaggeration) and navigated the pocket with ease, thanks to zero recorded sacks for Green Bay. And when the game was on the line, Barry’s coverage was softer than baby doo-doo, allowing DeVito to go 4/4 for 53 yards that led to the game-winning field goal. He finished 17 of 21 for 158 yards and one touchdown, with a passer rating of 113.9. He fared far worse in Week 15 against the New Orleans Saints – go figure – completing 58.8% of his passes to go along with a 72.8 passer rating. He was also sacked seven times. In the seven games that DeVito has appeared in this season, Green Bay is the only team to not record a single sack.

Believe it or not, things got worse for the Packers against Baker Mayfield.

Before the start of the 2018 NFL Draft, one in which the Oklahoma product was drafted first overall, Mayfield recreated Brett Favre’s 1991 draft “fit,” sporting a white t-shirt and jean shorts. Mayfield one-upped that move in the Week 15 contest by playing like Favre as he became the first road quarterback to produce a perfect passer rating (158.3) at Lambeau Field. Not to mention, he set a season-high in passing yards (381), touchdowns (4), and completion percentage (78.6%). Mayfield’s combined completion percentage in Week 14 and 15 was 48.3%.

Making pedestrian quarterbacks look like world-beaters has been a staple of Barry’s defense throughout the signal caller's tenure. Take Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s performance against the Packers in Week 11 last season as just one additional example among many. In a got-to-have-it game to strengthen the team’s playoff chances at that point in the season, Tannehill’s completion percentage (81.48%), passing yards (333), and passer rating (127.3) all turned out to be the gunslinger’s season-best outputs. Tannehill has been QB2 in Tennessee for the majority of the 2023 season.

Another staple of Barry’s defense has been preposterous mismatches in the slot, with linebackers lined up against perennial wide receivers. You saw Preston Smith lined up against Davante Adams earlier in the season, and on Sunday you saw De'Vondre Campbell in coverage against Chris Godwin. (Campbell couldn't cover air Sunday, let alone Godwin.) I’m no schematic wizard, but those self-inflicted mismatches should not happen at the frequency that they have under Barry.

Shall we highlight another staple of Barry’s defense? Screw it, let’s get wild. The number of massive gains the defense has allowed when facing long distances to go, irrespective of the down, has been maddening. While I could offer up countless examples from previous games, let’s hone in on Sunday’s contest. Facing a second-and-29 from their own 48 after a sack and holding penalty, Mayfield found Godwin for a 24-yard gain as the first half drew to a close. Tampa Bay eventually converted on a 46-yard field goal to take a 13-10 lead into the half. On the Bucs’ first possession of the second half, they picked up 15 yards on third-and-12 to extend the drive, which eventually led to a 26-yard touchdown reception by Rachaad White. On the ensuing drive, Mayfield once again found Godwin, this time for a 21-yard reception on second-and-18. Tampa Bay scored a touchdown later in the drive. All told Tampa Bay scored touchdowns on its three second-half possessions before running out the clock.

By the grace of the Big Man Upstairs, Green Bay still has a shot at making the playoffs, albeit not a great one. And it’s not a great one because of Barry and his squad’s ineptitude. I understand the personnel is not spectacular and has been limited by injuries, but the personnel in Minnesota, for example, is not spectacular and yet look at how that defense has performed in 2023.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirriani made a change at defensive coordinator last week with the unit performing poorly, and they are on the doorstep of their second straight division title. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, meanwhile, said after Sunday’s 34-20 loss that “now’s not the time for that” when asked if he would pull the plug on the Barry experiment before the end of the regular season because he needs to look at the tape. LaFleur can look at the film for hours on end, but even a delusional person with basic football knowledge would conclude Mayfield was playing a simple game of pitch-and-catch for 60 minutes with his receiving options.

Whether the ax drops this week or after the season likely does not matter in the grand scheme because LaFleur made this bed when he decided to bring Barry back last season, and frankly, when he hired Barry in the first place.

Rex, this is a glaring error:

"He finished 17 of 21 for 158 yards and one touchdown, with a passer rating of 113.9."

Mayfield recorded a perfect passer rating, the first in stadium history. You'll want to edit that.

Sometimes I seriously wonder whether Barry is doing these things on purpose, since he has to know he pulled the upset of the century by being retained, and knows he is gone after this year. So, effectively, he is "sticking it to the Packers" by continuing to put on these futile displays of ineptitude. Meanwhile, Vic Fangio, who was available during the off season, is fielding an effective defense in Miami. Perhaps if Saleh is fired by the Jets, they could lure him to Green Bay as DC. Well, a guy can dream, it's Christmas, and the New Year is just a few weeks away.

Or, it's possible there's a conspiracy at work here?
Maybe mlf, mm, gutey and jb formed a compromise at end of last season.
Don't fire jb last year.
Give him one more year (and salary plus nfl benefits) to implement the full rebuild strategy.
Win enough games and perform well enough to keep people interested, then lay enough eggs to get into the top 5 to 10 of the draft.
At year's end, jb is sent to the curb.
mlf gets kudos for his toughness and decision making.
gutey gets more high picks.
If it weren't for the stench from the field, this scenario would be a win-win-win.
Other than that possibility, it's beyond disgraceful to the G!
I'm not sure what to think of ja23, but if barry as at the heart of it, I'd look the other way if physical pain were inflicted on the dc.

He's been doing that since day one, though. In every season with Barry at the helm, we've had multiple games of making mediocre QBs look like future hall of famers and multiple games of making average running backs look like prime Walter Payton.

Come on Rex, we are the GB Packers, we don't fire incompetent coordinators in-season.

We are not like the 8-6 Buffalo Bills who fired their Offensive Coordinator and have gone 3-1 since then.

We are not like the 10-3 Philadelphia Eagles who just demoted their Defensive Coordinator.

We are the 6-8 Packers and the envy of the NFL.

Right but for the wrong reason. Lets get rid of him because he isnt a very good coach. he teaches a young Qb, just throw the out pass when no one is open didnt mean, if you cant read the d and are worried about being hit, throw the ball to the outlet and save your own ass even though we needed 11 for a first.
Or hey we tried twice and its third and one at the four, lets run our smallish back right into the teeth of the bucs d for a first down. Ya, two year olds saw that play coming. Thats why you fire the guy who really lived off Rodgers ability and now the real coach has shown he sucks at coaching and Love cant save his ass

I still don't believe they dump him after KC and Detroit.
The defensive unit will be at full strength shortly.
It's just a matter of the veterans playing up to their contracts.
The New players listen. But have to sit.
The vets can't stay on the field.
Losing any momentum it takes for progress.

Absolutely, positively wrong stockholder! This defense has regressed big time under Barry. Putting disgruntled veterans - and rightly so - back in after injury is not going to solve the problem of a general lack of respect for Dingle Barry. At the least the young guys have something to prove. But the Vets won't play hard for fear of injury to see what next season brings...

Let's cut to the chase: The simplest solution is to relieve MLF and Barry of their duties and appoint Bisaccia as the interim for the last three games. While MLF has done a reasonable good job of transitioning the offense from Rodgers to Love and company, the exponential stubbornness he is displaying with Barry is beyond belief.

It has been said countless times that Packers have an abundance of talent on defense, but it would be nice to actually see how much if they could ever be freed from some of these asinine schemes and put in a position to succeed. It might be greater or less than some may have imagined, but we'll never know until a change is made.

Probably just wishful thinking on my part due to the Murphy situation being in the way. Some kind of executive powwow might be the best hope, though, because does anyone trust MLF to do the right thing or make an astute short-term hire?

I agree and commented similarly. While the loyal beat reporters swear MLF job is not in jeopardy, answer this. Clearly the players don’t buy Barry’s bullshit scheme and philosophy, just ask Jaire if anyone respects him. So Mr no accountability MLF proved he doesn’t mind losing home playoff games until what everyone told him, your ST coach is going to cost you a game. What is the respect level the players have of the HC protecting his buddy? If MLF has lost the team you’ll see it in these last three games and he has no credibility to rally the team….you think MLF job is so secure?

I'd love to see Rich B as interim DC! How much worse could it be? A blind dog with 3 legs could do a better job than Dingle Barry.

But MLF would never consider it as Rich could eventually be a threat to his HC job! I have zero respect LaFleur now. The dynamic duo must leave asap!

So lets chsllenge LaFleur! Make Rich B the interin DC if you're not the scared, little weasel we all think u are?

Murphy stopped the interview process after first interview with LaFleur and announced to Ball and Gute he’d found his guy on the flight back. He then said nobody disagreed with his choice. His instinct told him LaFleur had the mindset and vision he resonated with. After sleeping on it he was convinced and neither Gute or Ball spoke up against it. Murphy’s own story of what happened

In other words, they didn’t fight the man he wanted and was willing to end interviews without any further first meetings or any second interviews at all. Hardly surprising. Ball is a Murphy hire who was retained after his quasi GM fiasco at Murphy’s insistence and Gute was a junior not quite GM. No one was going to fight Murphy over his choice.

They also interview 9 others. Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano were interviewed before the end of the regular season. Joe Philbin, Josh McDaniels, Brian Flores, Dan Campbell, Pete Carmichael, Todd Monken, Adam Gase and, finally LaFleur.

Here’s one piece setting out events if interested: https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2019/01/10/how-the-packers-picked-matt-...

You mean the idiots who drafted a guy that looks like the next franchise QB? And multiple starters from this year's draft? And a talented young cadre of WRs and TEs? He's not going anywhere. There are so many GMs in the league that are so, so much worse than Brian Gutekunst. The average for draft picks that even do much of anything for the team that drafted them and earn a second contract is around 30%. The number of first round draft busts is around 50%. Gutey has a team that is competitive AFTER the loss of a hall of fame QB, with much of the salary cap tied up in injuries this season (Aaron Jones, D Bakhtiari, Jaire Alexander). Other than the repeated poor performance by the D (which seems to be in some large part coaching/scheme related), this team has had more success this year than was expected. This is despite being the youngest roster in the NFL. Be careful what you wish for.

You got to understand that math wise this team, and to me its very fuzzy math, is still in the hunt. If the Planet Pluto explodes as the same time Saturn loses some rings and Kelsy proposes to miss wonderful and it all happens on a Saturday at noon, they may make the play offs.
I listened to one analyst who is really pissed at the Packers and obviously a fan said that the Panthers will make the Packers crap their pants at home and totally embarass the team, only then will they start to get rid of people and change. Lets hope so but what if the cheap ass management goes out to find someone else who is not on anyones radar, is a has been and wouldnt make any other teams DC, thats who you'll end up with just to save a fn buck.
Dom Capers, way past his prime when we got him, his successor was god awful but better then Barry, but no way in hell they went out and got a tough nosed disciplinarian because that person would gutt the defense of all the losers and demand free agents and real playes and the management doesnt want to pay for that bill.

That's the thing: Matt LaFleur hired Joe Barry in the first place. Why? There was nothing in Barry's resume to recommend him in the first place. And last year at the end of a dismal defensive season by the Packers, Matt stubbornly refused to get rid of Joe Barry. So maybe the real problem is Matt LaFleur.

Bill Michaels played a clip from ESPN's Sunday coverage. Rex Ryan and crew ripped the Packers defense, calling it 'awful', noting the depth of talent on the unit is not producting results.. Eric Barancyzk(sp?) noted that multiple times Campbell went wide to cover a running back or wide receiver while the much faster Quay Walker stayed inside. Walker's strength is his speed and Campbells' is his toughness inside. That shows some koo-koo execution by the defensive planners.

As I have commented many times, a great defense only requires a mediocre offense to win. The Packers offense is coming around, but the defense is going in reverse.

One might as well put Slayton or Clark on Godwin as Campbell. Campbell was a complete mismatch yet Barry kept calling those coverages. That’s where it gets to be ridiculous. Mind you, they had 3 steps in pretty much everything that we did behind the front all night, not just that match up.

We who watch a lot of football and have followed the game for years know one thing most coaches will admit to, both in college, high school and the pros: when you find something that works, you stick with it until your opponent figures out how to stop it and force you to then try something else.
One analyst pointed out kindly, the Bucs have a hell of a running game but yet weren't even trying to run - as in the pickings are so easy for Mayfield passing for big yards, there is no reason to run. The analyst was being kind by not saying that.
I mean 12 long first downs in a row not once being stopped by the pack d? A decent QB looking all world, greatest of great at Lambeau? This was an embarrassment LeFleur needs to study? Fire his ass too none of us will miss either one of them. Really is there one freekin person in GB who would miss LeFluer - two playoff games that were one and done and two years no playoffs. Shit coach could accomplish that

I’m sure Barry is gone after they finish 7-10, or 6-11, but if you think MLF picking a new DC will make them winners, you must have missed the offense against Denver, Las Vegas, Pittsburgh, and yes the Giants. 21.4 per game on this schedule is not good for an offensive guru, and qb that watched Rodgers for 3 years. When exactly does MLF get the blame? This is the fourth coordinator he fired after the horse left the barn. And he didn’t even fire this one yet.

Barry will not be fired or let go until the season is over. Matt LeFluer is just too nice of a guy to do that, plus he picked Barry!!! It will look bad on him to fire Barry during the season. Hopefully, LeFluer will bring in someone outside the Packet family business, an ass kicker. Someone who starts fresh and treats everyone the same. Rookies, second year players, veterans... Should all fight for a JOB, nothing handed out!!!

Did anyone see Carrington Valentine celebrating the only pass batted down by the Packers all day. End of third quarter, Packers already being roasted. Very next play a PI on Ballentine. Valentine was coming off a rough Monday night.
I can’t see this happening on a team that really respects its HC. Or I would question the collective IQ of this entire team.
Patrick Taylor, Quay Walker , Keisean Nixon, .. not the brightest group.

Everyone is picking on the D, but the O only scored 20 yesterday. Unless you have an elite defense holding teams to something in the teens, that's not gonna cut it.

In the 8 losses this year, the O has scored 24, 20, 13, 17, 10, 19, 22, and 20. Pretty awful. 7 of 8 are 20 pts or less. Pretty hard to win with that.

Sure the D needs to improve, and yesterday was awful, but the D is not the reason for majority of the losses this year.

I feel if Berry was going to get fired it would have already happened. Matt seems very loyal to his coaches and I get it (I have learned the hard way) but at some he point he will have to come to the realization that if he doesn't make change it is going to reflect on him if not now but certainly going forward.

Perhaps the stage is too big for MLF. He has said multiple times after losing games that GB "has been out-coached." Thankfully (for him), the Packers do not have an owner, or he would be gone.

MLF only said that about being out-coached to "allow" him to say that the players got out-played.

He is a soft touchy-feely new age wimp that thinks criticism is NEVER deserved and that only by including yourself in the equation can you speak truthfully - if negatively - about someone elses fault(s).

The consensus of opinion seems to be that GB doesn't fire coaches mid-season.
BUT, that's when Mike McCarthy got canned, after a bad loss to a bad team (Zona) in '18.
So who knows?

I am no longer as frustrated concerning Coach Barry as I am the person responsible for retaining him.

Just a side note: it could be just me, but when the camera panned to the Packer sideline before the final whistle blew...it was the first time I felt Love and Doubs look completely demoralized. Mainly Love.

This will all shake out and I am very excited to see the Packers roster and coaches in a year or two. The gems this year for me that was totally surprising were the wins against the Lions and Chiefs...those were awesome!

Peace,

Campbell has been crucified today and perhaps rightfully so……but this also points out Barry’s propensity to put players in positions to fail ! Putting Campbell on a wide out is insanity….playing db’s 10 /15 yds off is as bad and leaving Huge gaps between the rush and lbs is worse ! We have good defensive players but Barry always puts in positions to fail! Suck it in……MLF won’t can him and maybe next year’s head coach will bring in a coordinator with some 🏈

The bigger story as we all know… young team, cash strapped. MLF ain’t going anywhere. He may fire Barry. But that will be the extent of change during such a rebuild.

At the beginning of the season, 6 wins was widely expected. Don’t get too carried away by past successes…

As a long time Packer fan - one who goes back to the Ice Bowl and before. I just cannot see why they are being so proper in not dismissing Barry after Sunday's performance. A performance that was under pressure and an ebarrasment. . And just look at the coaches and assistants this year who have been dismissed this year including most recently Steelers OC. And OC of the Bills. Factor in the the Pack fired McCarthy before Black Monday - why oh why wasnt Barry fired. Now there is a few things such as injury to the roster but - there seems to be a lack of hustle and a lack of scheme and a lack of the desire to win. I also wonder if some of the players are taking longer to recover because they dont want to be re-injured because they are not putting their desire to win above playing a little bit hurt. When the going gets tough the tough get going.

I agree with the comments that Barry and MLF should be gone by now. However as I have posted on numerous previous occasions since the end of the 2020 season I am not expecting that the people who created this on going mess for the Packers are capable of getting the Packers out of this mess. The inaction by management over the last few seasons is proof that management does not yet see the need to make the necessary changes for the benefit of the team.

They have no sense of urgency due to a sold out stadium, the Titletown District and league revenue sharing. If Murphy is allowed to hand pick his successor after he retires in 2025 the current situation could go one for a long time. Ultimately MLF will be the scapegoat but the issues with the Packers are systemic and begin further up in the organization's hierarchy. Thanks, Since '61

Yes, that is almost exactly what i said....

Murphy could promote Ball, or Policy to his seat.

Hell, he might even feel he owes Russ Ball after the McCarthy circumvention.

So if that happens, maybe the old boys club goes on as business as usual.

Since '61

Years ago i called it the disease of upper management. That was conceived when i thought Murphy was derelict in duty by not removing Thompson when he clearly wasn't well in 2015-2017, and the team was regressing.

A reporter then asked Murphy about Thompson, and Murphy told him.....Ted will let me know when he wants to retire.

I was like...are you flipping kidding me?
DO YOUR JOB!!

About a year or so later, someone from the BOD's tells Murphy he has to let Thompson go.

Thank God someone had some backbone and told Murphy to do his job.

Mark Murphy can't leave soon enough for me, i'll buy him a one way ticket out of Green Bay.

I think that holds true of this coaching staff. Wait till the season ends and then pick them up and reload.

Sadly that's the way. Fandom is reactionary. No one is immune I'm afraid. people tune into the most inane screamfests between mid-IQ outrage merchants and that seems to animate every sports discussion.

I pretty much loved Capers. I thought he was too cautious about playing Bishop, but he was a cerebral jedi when it came to defense. Pettine was a quality dude too. The issue with Barry is that he's been a repeat milk-toast loser at every prior stop. He's another one of those guys who gets recycled in spite of their past records. A mediocre white guy failing upward.

Leatherhead,

You make very valid points about the DC's of the past. Hell, we fans would probably complain about Fritz Shurmur had he been a DC in this era of "instant gratification."

That said, the parallels between the first seasons of Rodgers and Love as starters are eerie. The stats are very similar. Both QB's were/are betrayed by passive defenses. McCarthy had the will to fire Bob Sanders (whose defense was in the NFC title game the year before). That decision resulted in Capers who got us to a SB win 3 years later. (Granted, Capers got long in the tooth and was retained too long) Can MLF make a similar decision? And get similar results? Only the Shadow knows.

Sanders was not McCarthy's guy. He was Mike Sherman's hire. That McCarthy axed him was a statement of his ownership.

LaFleur let Pettine go. His CHOICE was Barry. He interviewed talent and he landed on Barry. Barry is his guy. This is the defensive philosophy - LaFleur's defense.

A fish rots from the head.

"I've heard this song before. Fire Donatell. Fire Capers. Fire Pettine. Fire Bates."

You mean the Ed Donatell who had his longest stay as a DC (tied) with the Packers, or Dom Capers who spent 9 years with the Packers (more than twice any other stay in his career) or Mike Pettine who spent 3 years with the Packers and can't find another DC job, or Jim Bates who spent 1 with the Packers then followed that with 1 year off, 1 year with Broncos, year off, then 1 year with the Bucs and retirement.

So DCs that either stayed the longest with the Packers or were out of football shortly after they left the Packers. NOT A SINGLE QUALITY DC IN THE GROUP. I can see how fans would think they need to be fired, just like Joe Barry.

Are you seriously arguing any of them should have stayed LONGER?

"Whoever we hire to replace him , we'll be wanting fired in a few years."

Yes, because the Packers are incapable of finding a good DC. The solution, make a list of all candidates ranked by GBP front office from best to worst. Turn the list upside down and hire the "top" person. Almost a 100% chance of being better than the crap they've hired for the last 20+ years.

My heart sank on the very first snap of Sunday's game. The Bucs receiver split out to the right. He was uncovered at the snap. About 2 1/2 seconds later he caught the pass 5 yards down field with the Packers DB 5 yards further down field. Next thing he's being pushed out of bounds after and 11-yard gain. It went like that all the way to the 20-yard line where our defense suddenly decided it might be time to start playing ball. The reporters covering this team are way too polite. Someone should have asked Barry why the hell didn't they start covering receivers at their 20-yard line instead of waiting until they got to our 20-yard line.
This team will never win anything with Barry as DC. I hope he is being fired as I type this!

Id mentioned on another forum that win lose or draw this year some of the Packer tree needed pruning in the off season. This particular limb should have been lopped off a while back Barry has never had success in the pros as a d coordinator, hes a linebacker coach, period. He coordinated an 0-16 lions defense under marinelli,, and his redskins ne commanders defense was near the bottom of the league too. The knock was "he didnt have the talent he has here" True enough hes got better talent here.....and hes squandering it. The drive at the end of the half tells the story, 2nd and 29 after a penalty and sack, and the next play goes for 24 yards. Come on man. Thats not good enough We need a defensive coordinator who understands defense. Barry isnt it. Time to move on

Every staff can have a shelf life. Philly kicked Andy Reid out. There were other coaches whose success came after a move even our MM. I would like to see Lafleur have another year with Love the same as MM had after AR. But we need a different voice on the defensive side of the ball. Not sure that Lafleur is an offensive Guru but I dont like dumping HCs when a new QB has first year development issues. How has worked for the Jets or Buffalo or Giants or Carolina or especially da Bears

I kinda agree early in the season even with the earlier losses. But once we had a chance to be really competitive and we stunk the joint out At Home and had no competitive interest in playing defense, that's when I am going with the fire him now crowd ( D C ). Dont believe it's an overreaction if it would have happened after that game.

The vast majority of the comments all seem to be in favor of firing Joe Barry and I am in full agreement. I saw many comments about effort and so on, injuries, and poor play calling - I find myself saying there is something to all of that- but one comment really stuck out how does De'Vondre Campbell end up in coverage on WR's five or six times in a game.

I learned in Pewee football if they are running over your DE put a bigger body there- if Mayfield is picking on your match-up then change the match up. I know football is harder than that but in the years Barry has been here Gb could never stop the run- now they can stop nothing. I was not shocked over the frustration losses early on where GB lost because of so many penalties oh wait now after 3/4 of the season we have 9 or 10 again tonight.

Hard to imagine worse results with all the back ups in so where do you go from here??
