Vikings vs Packers: Week 2 Matchup

Aaron breaks down both sides of the ball in his preview of Sunday's showdown with the Vikings.

Early season control of the NFC North is on the line when the Minnesota Vikings arrive at Lambeau Field Sunday afternoon to take on the Green Bay Packers.

Here's a look at what to expect from both sides of the ball and my sure-to-be-incorrect call on who wins the game.

What To Expect When The Vikings Have The Ball

Outside zone. A lot of it.

There's been a lot of attention paid, rightfully so, to the incredible production the Vikings got out of Dalvin Cook and the running game last week against the Atlanta Falcons. There's been less attention paid to the game circumstances that allowed them to stick to running the football as much as they did.

Obviously, they were incredibly effective getting Cook on the edge throughout the game. The explosive young running back not only showcased his speed but played with some real aggression and power.

The Vikings were certainly effective on the ground, but they were allowed to stick with Mike Zimmer's favorite method of moving the football thanks to jumping out to a quick 14 point lead that ballooned to a 28-0 advantage that the Falcons never recovered from.

Mike Pettine is much better equipped to deal with the Vikings love of the running game after Brian Gutekunst upgraded the talent level on his side of the ball significantly this offseason, but that talent only matters if his players play a disciplined brand of football and make the tackle when its there to be made. We've seen Cook get the better of Packers defenders in space many times throughout his brief NFL tenure. Blake Martinez and company can't allow cheap yards on Sunday, and that includes newly acquired B.J. Goodson who Matt LaFleur indicated should see action against the Vikings.

I expect Preston and Z'Darius Smith to have a strong game on the edges funneling Cook and the running game back inside. One piece of the puzzle that can't be discounted in rookie safety Darnell Savage, who played every snap last Thursday in his NFL debut. The tape shows plenty of examples of his closing speed and his ability to diagnose things quickly. Green Bay hasn't had a player like this at the safety spot but, not to get too far out over my skis here, I think Savage could be better. He's not just a speed merchant, he's a sturdy tackler who seeks out contact and isn't afraid to mix it up in the run game. Look for him to be involved from his deep safety spot when Cook looks to be busting loose.

The Vikings passing game is a whole different problem. We, Packers fans, like to make fun of Kirk Cousins (for obvious reasons) but the guy has made a living taking it to the Packers secondary. Cousins has thrown for 1,142 yards (380.7 per game) 10 touchdowns vs. 1 interception for a 129.3 rating in 3 career games vs. Green Bay. Last season in Lambeau he threw for 425 yards and four touchdowns. This is not a guy to take lightly. (Yes, I know, I know...

The Vikings wide outs provide a big test for the Packers secondary, one which they have had trouble passing in the past. Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen have been incredibly productive against the Packers, regardless of who is throwing them the football.

Diggs is coming off a quiet game against Atlanta and had been dealing with a hamstring injury, though he does not appear on this week's injury report. He's scored a touchdown in five straight games against the Packers and obliterated the Packers last year in Lambeau, bringing in nine catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns. 75 yards and one of those TDs coming on one big play that basically sparked the Vikings that afternoon. Perhaps the best thing to take away from that play? Neither member of the Packers secondary that was involved will be suiting up for Green Bay on Sunday.

Thielen is just as much a thorn in the side of the Packers as Diggs.

The six year pro eight or more catches in four of his last five games against Green Bay. He caught 20 balls in the two games against the Packers last year. The guy produces, no matter who is throwing him the ball and no matter who is covering him.

The key then is to limit that production. I'm not going to sit here and say an improved Packers secondary is going to suddenly shut these guys down. (Especially considering that their best corner is dealing with a knee injury that popped up during or after Wednesday's practice.) But they do have the pieces to slow down Diggs and Thielen to a point where they don't completely take over the game. They actually were doing a good job of it early in that Week 2 contest last year prior to (and stop me if you've heard this one before) Kevin King's injury and House being torched on the 75 yard bomb.

Again, tackling becomes important. One pleasant surprise during the Bears game was how few yards after the catch the Packers corners and safeties allowed. It's a sticky group that looked to rarely be out of position and when they did allow a catch, that's where things stopped. Need to continue that trend vs a set of wide receivers who have just killed the Packers over the years.

When The Packers Have The Ball

David Bakhtiari should play, but it's certainly something to watch over the course of the next two days. The sight of the Packers starting left tackle in street clothes during Thursday's padded practice is enough to send a shiver up the spine of fans everywhere.

The Packers will look to get on track offensively by getting their running game going, but to me the whole key is pushing tempo in and out of the huddle. LaFleur talked about it all training camp and we saw very little carry over in Week 1. Now, that undoubtedly has to do with the fact that they were on the road, in prime time, running the offense for the first time in a hostile environment. But Aaron Rodgers and the offense need to operate with a much higher sense of urgency from the moment they step onto the field Sunday afternoon.

For his part, Rodgers did take ownership of this aspect of the game and vowed to improve there going forward. Here's hoping we see some tangible evidence against the Vikings.

The prime time matchup in this one is Davante Adams vs Xavier Rhodes. The two pros have had some really compelling battles over the years, though Zimmer hasn't shied away from giving Rhodes help from time to time. I don't expect that to change on Sunday, with coverage shaded toward Davante on obvious passing downs and an extra rover in the box. (Most likely Harrison Smith.) Adams may not run free all afternoon, but he has shown an uncanny ability to make things happen in space against Rhodes once the ball is in his hands.

LaFleur used two tight ends maybe a bit more than expected in Chicago and I'm curious to see if that was more opponent specific or a foundational shift in how he plans to utilize his personnel. Sean McVay tends to stay in 11 personnel the majority of the time. Kyle Shanahan mixes it up more than McVay with many more power looks. Where does LaFleur end up?

The Packers struggled to run the ball in any kind of meaningful way last Thursday night, which I very much expected. I do think they'll have a better showing on the ground Sunday afternoon, but I still don't expect great production from Aaron Jones and company. What I do expect to see, however, is the play action game to be utilized much more than we saw against the Bears. Getting Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks taking steps toward the line of scrimmage and working receivers in behind them is where LaFleur and Rodgers want to live on Sunday. Not that it will be easy, but I expect to see Jimmy Graham and the tight ends used on delays where they act like their helping block a defensive end and then releasing up field a few times.

Mostly, this will be a big game of cat and mouse between Mike Zimmer and Aaron Rodgers. Yes, LaFleur calls the plays, but I've seen enough already to know that this offense is most certainly in the hands of the veteran quarterback. Maybe they spread it out and go tempo. Maybe they utilize the fullback in the passing game some more like we saw throughout the first part of training camp. Whatever wrinkles we see on Sunday will only be as effective as Rodgers allows them to be. He clearly hasn't worked on cleaning up his mechanics. He's still taking the play clock all the way down prior to the snap of the ball. He's still not playing within the rhythm of the play design. All of that is fine - if he makes it work. Complete those passes you don't step into or sling side arm (sometimes both at the same time) and exactly zero people will care.

But the more balls we see thrown at Jimmy Graham's feet or out of the reach of a breaking-open-on-an-out-route Davante Adams, the more Rodgers' play needs to be scrutinized. It's all well and good to point to past MVP awards and shrug at the deterioration of his mechanics, but the longer he isn't productive because of it, the more it hurts this team.

All this said, there will be opportunities for big time production on Sunday and I expect Rodgers to take advantage and move the offense much more effectively than he did last Thursday.

Alright, Enough, Who Wins The Game

It's going to be a warm, humid afternoon in Green Bay on Sunday. Long, sustained drives are going to be the order of the day on offense and getting off the field will be a priority for the defense. Get the lead and tire them out with a healthy does of Aaron Jones and well-executed play-action passing. Cousins, Cook and the Vikings offense will undoubtedly get theirs, but I expect the Packers defense to make the plays in the secondary they couldn't make in their Week 2 matchup last year.

Give me the Packers winning by a field goal and many beers being had afterwords at Stadium View

This article has me coming back to reality a bit.... I thought per James Jones quote on Bill Michaels, "We're fittin to kill these dudes." Originally I thought there was no way Cousins was going to be able to avoid the rush and be productive due to his consistent inability to feel a rush. Now as I learn Jaire and Kind are dinged up it's got me worried. Not to mention Big Bahk in street clothes.... 24-20 Pack

I think the safety play is the biggest improvement on the defense. i know there is a pass rush but safety's contribute to both the run game and pass coverage. With Amos' intelligence level and Savage's speed and instincts I think Cousins makes a few mistakes that flip the game.

Zimmer is no slouch and you can be sure he'll have his team prepared and playing to the best of their abilities.

Simply put, the Packers can't beat themselves- win the turnover battle, no stupid penalties, control the LOS, move the chains.

Prediction- Packers 17, Vikings 14.

Yeah. Cousins is one of the better QBs we’re going to face this year, and he’s been one of the better QBs n the league over the last several years. And those are just the unfair facts.

Stas on losing tend to get padded on losing teams. The bottom line is he's a BELOW 500 QB. Wins and losses is how they grade all great QB's at the end of the day. We that and what they do in the Playoffs which he's 0-1 losing to who? Green Bay!

Gute took over a friggen mess left by Thompson. He's done a remarkable job building the defense in what, 20 months or so? 8-7-1 last season after they went 12-4 with Keenum? Yup he sure is one of the better QB's (cough cough).

Those are the facts OS...And those are VERY fair.

Exactly. So wow cousins is the champ, beating the Packers the last 2 years, when Rodgers missed most of that time, and while we sucked at times on D. How's his record in other big games throughout his career, of which there are not a great number, I suspect? He's good, but I concede nothing more than any opposing QB.

The facts are posted above by Aaron Nagler similar facts posted by Old School in a previous thread. Nagler got 7 thumbs up for his article OS got a littany of thumbs down.

Cousins has been a thorn in the Packers side. I'm hoping our inproved defense can keep him in check. The Falcons dug thenselves an early grave and Cousons didn't need to win the game for them when their defense dominated. The Packers needed 1 drive from Rodgers to win and that's all he could deliver.

Nagler and OS make the same point that the Packers should win with hime field advantage. It's going to be tougher than people are giving the Vikings credit for though. I'm looking forward to a battle!

Because posters that bring a dose of reality are frowned upon. Like Nagler said in another story, it's like MM never left, which meant a lot of the problem last year was due to Rodgers. Simply put, Rodgers needs to start executing the offense and not run down the clock, not hold the ball forever always looking for the big play while accruing sacks.

I wonder if Rodgers understands how much McCarthy protected him over his play the last couple of years. I remember a 2017 thread where Mojo broke down Brees rebuilding his mechanics comparing Rodgers. (Got to go back and read that..) His point back then is Brees understood that age had caught up and he needed to change. Well, it's two years later, and Aaron Rodgers is not the same player physically he was even two years ago. Father time respects no one. (a fact I am painfully aware of these days) I question if Rodgers understands his limits now and how much of that is restricting his use of the offense. Well, it's still too early for that I guess. We will have to wait and see.

Nick, you tend to go overboard on Thompson's last few years. I do too, but for different reasons.. What Gute has done in the past two years is remarkable. Drafting is always a crap shoot and Gutes play at the table has been nothing short of amazing short term. And his free agent pickup and signings in a tight cap space really is something special, even at NFL standards. But none of this would be possible without the base that Ted Thompson built, even in his later years. We knew that this was a good team but thin at too many positions, and that a rebuild was coming. It was just a question of when, that's all. While we all are happy about the regular season starting, lets not forget that this team is still a work in progress, with many positions thin and depth uncertain. (and no replacement for RT and QB. the two most important positions on the team) Go PACK!

Need to get the run game going. First it will make play action much more effective. Second it will keep the Vikings offense and their weapons off the field. Cook is very fast plus he has enough power to generate yards after contact.

The interior of our OL needs to be better than they were against Chicago. Early on Rodgers needs to take what the defense gives him on the ground and in the air, assuming the OL plays effectively. Once we get the Vikings to bite on play action we can take our shots down the field.

Our defense needs to stop the run but also be prepared for plenty of play action off of Cook if the Packers over play the run. Our pass rush should be able to disrupt Cousins but if he gets time Diggs and Thielen can hurt us. Sound tackling will be required again this week.

It would be great to force a few turnovers against the Vikings.

Play with a lead, move the sticks and keep their offense off the field. Pack 23 - 13. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

Patriots and Ravens LB+DE Defense 101 - set the edge against the run as a priority.

Personally I do think that injuries are going to decide this match.

If the Packers remain healthy then I see a win for the Packers.

If a key lineman or defensive back goes down then Minnesota are good enough to capitalize.

New players, new coaches, new scheme, old rivalry. I don’t think that this game can be compared to past games. I recently heard that “Stats are for losers”. Right now there is very little to go on. Injuries and key players coming back (like Cook) are also an unknown factor. But I do know that Rodgers can still pull off a win when the chips are down even when he is not at his best. I also saw a better defense from us than I have seen in the past. Vegas has the Pack winning by two. Often the home team is favored by three so that tells me that it will be close, very close. I think that MLF will try to get our run game going and have a lot of two tight end sets and might use the fullback more but in the end it will be up to Rodgers.

I'm all for getting better and for picking up quality players at a discount from a tanking team.

That said, this team will need to invest high draft picks for an OT, WR, QB and LB in the next three years. I'm not sure I'm comfortable giving up a 1 for a guy where GB is already deep. If I thought GB was one of the best teams in the league I'd do it in an attempt to win this year. I just don't think Fitzpatrick is the difference between GB and NE, NO, KC.

Last year in the secondary, we had HaHa, Brice, and Breeland. Outside of Kenny Clark, we had marginal players on the DL. The outside linebackers were a slow Clay Mathews and a pathetic Nick Perry. Inside we had a fairly reliable Martinez. Most of that defense has been replaced and upgraded with new bigger, faster, younger, healthier players. AMos, Savage, The Smith brothers on the edges, and a new ILB to team up with Martinez. This defense has speed like it hasn't had in years. The Vikings are in for a big surprise. On offense, the biggest thing is Rogers getting rid of the ball quickly. That said , Packers win 24-17.

Now that you put it that way I do feel a hell of a lot better. I'm sincerely hoping that we come in with the same attitude that we had in Chicago. Better players and some momentum on our side. And we're home.I suppose any doubt I do have, lies in the fact that I want this win so bad that I can taste it.

Breeland didn't play until the Washington game. We had Alexander and King, HaHa and Brice. King went down and then House got taken to the house. Now we have Amos and Savage patrolling the back end. Amos and Savage BOTH would make the play on the ball that Theilen caught between 2 defenders (HELL of a catch though) to send the game to OT. I don't see Captain Choke putting up gaudy numbers against the secondary this year. That man will be running for his life today.

Also this game Minn's secondary is really, really beat up. Mack Alexander is out today, Hughes is doubtful and likely won't play (according to VikingsWire). It's like the tables did a 180. If there was a day to get the GB pass attack going and running on all cylinders today is that day.

I don’t know about “efficient and flowing” but is 2016 really that long ago? The Packers were 8th in yards and 4th in points scored that season. Rodgers had 40 TDs, 7 INTs for a 104.2 rating. Pretty efficient. I know it’s more and more a ‘what have you done for me lately (yesterday)’ world but I’m old and I can still remember that season.

Cubbygold, I agree with most of what you said but disagree with, "... Trubisky ... wasn't careless with the football." There were multiple times when the Packers could have come down with interceptions. Trubisky didn't seem "careful" to my eyes. In any case a less mobile Cousins should have our secondary feasting if the front 7 the Packers showed us in the first game is for real. I can't remember the last time I saw the Packers only rush 4 and believing they could still get a sack!

So sorry i won't be able to watch it here in S Cal, we get the 'skins & cowgirls. Alas, we'll listen to Wayne & Larry call what should be a barn burner; so far i've loved how GB has prepared and it'll be so rewarding if they (again) bring their game faces and confident swagger to defend their turf. Out is MM with his boring play calling and in is more motion and a hungry, prideful offense that has something to prove. Also gone, but not from memory, is the idiotic game stealer call on CM3..so, let's hope the officials can call a fair game. No injuries please on either side!

I’m in San Francisco- I use an app called “pro radio” to listen to Wayne & Larry, and I stream the games (shhh don’t tell the NFL) through Reddit at r/nflstreams. If you have no other means to watch, you should definitely try the reddit streams. It can be a bit buggy but I usually get it to work. My brother has Sunday ticket and man sometimes it doesn’t work! I wish NFL would create an ala carte team pass.

Yup. I'm in Rochester, MN. It's the black hole of packers fandom. I'm outside packers local networks AND NFL sunday ticket blacks out the games because I'm considered local.

Going to try that radio app

For all of the hype that Dalvin Cook is getting, I would have thought that he had done something more than just 111 yards against last year's 25th ranked rushing defense.

I thought the Falcons looked awful. No flow, no containment. Made running look easy. The Bears want to run the ball and struggled against our new look defense.
