The Lass Word: EQ and Funchess Put Themselves on Shakier Ground

Just because it's voluntary doesn't mean you don't need to be there.

Yes, I know OTA’s are voluntary.  The reality is, you can’t afford to skip them unless you can take your position on the team for granted.  Aaron Rodgers can skip OTA’s.  He has a job with the Packers any time he feels inclined to report.  The same is true for Davante Adams, and a small handful of other established players.

Out of 89 players then on the roster, only ten failed to show up for workouts that began Monday.  But out of that ten, half turned out to be the top five returning receivers.  I am having a tough time believing that is coincidence.  Seems pretty obvious to me this is a collective action to demonstrate some sort of support for Rodgers.  The five missing were Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, Equanimeous St. Brown and Devin Funchess.

In his conference with the media Tuesday, Matt LaFleur said he has talked to each one of the receivers individually, and the subject of a collective boycott never came up.  Either he is in denial, or more likely, just trying to keep the focus on the players who are there.

If there is any positional unit that would feel the need to suck up to Rodgers by pulling a stunt like this, it would logically be the receivers.  After all, catching passes is how they make their money.  You can’t catch passes if the quarterback doesn’t throw them to you.  Rodgers’ proclivity for having favorite receivers is well documented.  We have heard ad infinitum that receivers need to “earn his confidence” before QB12 will target them consistently.  What better way to stay in his good graces but to join in his absence?

As I mentioned, a player with the resume’ of Davante Adams can do this and nobody will question it.  Perhaps Adams is also sending a little extra tweak to management that, as he goes into the final year of his current deal, the Packers had better not take him for granted.  MVS and Lazard are certainly not of the same standing as Davante, but they are starting veterans who played a significant role in the team’s success over the past two seasons.  Both will also need to be re-signed after this season.  So if they want to flex a little psychological muscle by opting out of the voluntary activities, okay.

But EQ and Funchess?  This is not smart on their part.  Green Bay may only keep five receivers on the active list.  Third round draft pick Amari Rodgers is certain to be one of them.  That would leave someone in that missing group of five as odd man out.  EQ has not been available enough nor productive enough to feel secure about making this team.  Funchess chose not to play because of Covid concerns last season, and that is understandable.  However, the Packers demonstrated they could do just fine without him, and the salary cap squeeze being what it is, the temptation to cut him will be strong.  He needs to be on the field, voluntarily or otherwise, impressing coaches.

The receiver absences forced Green Bay to sign an extra free agent receiver, DeAndre Thompkins out of Penn State.  Thompkins is likely just camp fodder but what if he balls out and impresses the coaches to the point where they find a place for him?  That would be one less spot for EQ and Funchess.  Malik Taylor is in a similar situation.  He was smart enough to realize he’d better get on the field and try to catch the coaches’ eyes.

The irony is, these pass catchers are losing an opportunity to begin developing chemistry with the guy who just may turn out to be their starting signal caller in the fall.  If Aaron Rodgers is holding out or traded, Jordan Love is going to be throwing to somebody, probably those with whom he is most comfortable.

The Players’ Association has been encouraging players to skip voluntary OTA’s, and has been campaigning to make them permanently virtual.  As is always the case in matters like this, that’s all well and good for established stars, but the rank and file fighting for a job need to be on the field putting good stuff on tape.   It will be most interesting to see if the Green Bay receivers will take their collaboration far enough to skip the mandatory camp that begins next month.

I doubt they will.  So what’s the point?

"and the subject of a collective boycott never came up."

Is it a boycott if I don't tell anyone it's a boycott? The definition of boycott leaves that part sort of vague.

Surely the point of a protest is to make it known? Personally I doubt that covers all five. I do agree with the authors comments on the Union in terms of the impact of their guidance on borderline roster types.

I agreed with the comments on Funchess initially, but he does have an immunocompromised family member. At some point he’s got to move past that, but I’m not in a position to judge whether this merited it (got to be darn close Devin).

ESB somehow doesn’t shock me. There were questions about his desire and attitude in college. He seems to have trouble fighting through anything and I get the impression he feels entitled. I can see him not realizing he’s not a roster certainty. I think he drifts himself off the roster.

I’d extend the same sentiment to non receivers, to players like Hollman and Samuels. These types needs any and all opportunities to get a leg up and catch the eyes of coaches. If you weren’t a starter last year, you probably need to be on the field as much as you can, never mind what the Union says. It’s not getting you a roster spot.

Agree 100%! The players union doesn't do much for former players who are not on a roster.

I actually find the case of the missing CBs more curious. The WRs are presumably garnering favor with someone who might be determining the ball distribution. What are the CBs getting out of skipping OTAs except a couple extra days off? Careful what you wish for. There might be a lot more days off in the future...

Adams is going to break the bank either way within the next 12 months. Either in GB or somewhere else, It is perfectly understandable that he's not risking injury.

I truly do not understand why the other 4 are sitting it out. I go back and forth between thinking it is a coinkydink and coordinated. No theory to explain a coordinated effort makes much sense to me,

If Rodgers is behind it, it would be an indicator he does ultimately plan on coming back. We've all heard the stories of how he freezes out WRs. If he's saying "sit it out with me so we can all leave", MVS, Lazard, ESB and Funchess are monumentally stupid for following. None of them have built up the career resume to make that kind of stand. If he's saying "make a point with me before we all come back or else I will freeze you out once we do", it makes more sense. I still think ESB and Funchess are making a mistake, since they have to make the team before it matters. But that's another discussion.

As a GB WR, if AR doesn't like or trust you, then you don't play. If AR isn't QB in fall, then it's going to be a shit show anyway. Either way, I was kind of hoping that someone beats EQ out this year.

I'd like to see someone beat out most of those receivers!

Just maybe one or two WR's from a Rodger's trade come over and actually beat a few of these WR's out for a roster spot. I'd be very concerned particularly if I am ESB and Funchess....VERY!

Wow, Ken. You, yourself, close this wild goose chase by saying "If Aaron Rodgers is holding out or traded..." Don't you think that last word carries with it some significance? I mean, we're talking about our franchise QB being traded, but, no, we're not going to discuss that...

There are simple procedures involved with making trades. One of them is protecting any and all players who might be involved from any potential harm by exposing them to the practice field.

Wouldn't it make sense that there might be something to this GIGANTIC TRADE RUMOR flying all across the NFL that the Denver Broncos might be in trade discussions with the Packers for Aaron Rodgers, and that there might be some other players involved?

I mean, nothing you said here makes any sense.

MVS, Lazard, EQ, Funchess - those players have to know, along with Davante, that they might be part of a potential AR trade, and would it not make sense then, if they are being discussed, to hold them out of OTAs???

There is no end game to this whole "solidarity" stuff being bandied about. ZERO. Who makes the final calls on roster cuts? Brian Gutekunst.

ESB was training with Jordan Love this offseason. Why would he hold out? For Aaron Rodgers? A player is going to risk his livelihood for a QB so he might throw the ball to him? ... this is batshit crazy.

Don't you think the team might have held those players out, like the Broncos did under similarly questionable guise?

Does everybody have their heads up Aaron Rodgers' newly cleared out rectum wiggling their ears???

Refusing to acknowledge this trade possibility - as a simple possibility, in favor of the above narrative puts the character of those players in question. I don't think that is fair.

As Lombardi would say, "What the Hell is going on out there???!!!"

There’s going to be a trade and it could well include a WR. I’ve never really been a fan of the “multiple players from both sides” theory, but even if it’s one WR why would you tip your hand by excusing only him?

First couple days.....stretch, lineup, do walk throughs......it’s no big deal for people who already know the drill.

Why do I not see the packers trading Da with AR? Can Denver take that cap hit for Two? Do they want his extension/new contract signed first? Huge risk to trade for AR and DA knowing one expects a long term close to or above highest paid player in the NFL and the other to be made the highest paid WR. Both those guys, at least DA, could just walk as a FA (unless the franchise tag is used) and AR could pull the same game there.
Plus the Packers would be immediately be committing to a rebuild and setting love up for failure. No one on the Roster or from a trade is going to help him as much as DA. lets give the kid every chance to max out his ability from day 1. Sure that ability wont be as good as in a few years but Amari,Lazard,MVS etc are all good role players #2 on down WR that excel at certain roles. Da graded out as #1 for a reason, knows the system and can be a great security blanket for love just as he was for AR.

Just thoughts from what we know and can put together.

I dunno man.

Multi-player trades are almost unheard of in the NFL.

plus.. the only WR I could see Denver being interested in acquiring, or the Packers being interested in moving, would be Davante Adams- From the Denver side, he's the only WR who holds any real value, and from the Packers side, he's the only WR who offers substantial cap relief.

I think the idea that the Packers are intentionally holding out their entire starting WR corps just in case Denver wants a trade involving one of them is getting pretty far out there on the "not likely" fringe.

Rodgers? Yeah, that makes sense. MAYBE even Adams. not the whole damn 1-5 lineup.

Another good article from Ken that raises legit questions about all of this drama, how it has/is going to spread among players and has the potential to create a fracture in the foundation of the team.

I'm at the point where I think the Packers best recourse is just acceding to the divorce, signing the papers and getting as much out of the dead marriage as possible before it affects the kids.

Spot on LambeauPlain!

When Rodgers' grudge was against other teams, the fire that was lit under him was great. Once his grudge turned against the Packers, I fear he may burn down his own team.

I support AR12 because he is a Packer. Once he moves to another team because of a grudge, then he becomes the enemy. Packers first. Everything/everyone else last.

Acceptance! Welcome Aboard!

I’m for trading Rodgers for Surtain and Chubb and next years first round pick. If they want to talk about Adams, I could listen to what they’d offer.

Denver is in a hard spot: They have Mahomes in the division and he’s owned them. Teddy Bilgewater isn’t going to change that, but the Rodgers/Adams pitch and catch could.

If the Packers take on players, I hope it's only because Denver needs to move players to afford Rodgers.

If the Packers take on players, I hope it's only for a brief moment while they deal them elsewhere for picks.

The Packers desperately need to get out from Rodgers' contract for the health and long term stability of the roster. If they move Rodgers and take on near equal amount of cap liability, we're just going to be in the same situation - having to release young talent for the next few years- without having the HOF QB.

Moving Rodgers needs to happen within the next season or two, and it should be with the intent to acquire draft capital and build a young, extremely talented roster with the eye on a potential run while the new young talent added is in first contract.

I had these same thoughts when I read the list of receivers not there. EQ and Funchess, I agree, are taking a big risk. If they perform well then they should have a shot at making the roster. However, if they are sort of tied with those who came to the practices, then if I'm the coach making the decision, that would have to be in the back of my mind who to choose.

Funchess, I don’t know a thing about, but, please, EQ? He trained with Love just weeks ago.

Not only that, but if this was some kind of players union stance, why would only the WRs be holding out?

Don’t you think it makes more sense these players, who are team assets, might be told to sit tight pending a trade? Doesn’t a lack of real transparency with this at all levels point more to a pending trade situation?

Let me get this straight, Malik Taylor is the only smart one... ???

I refuse to cave, Bubs!

There’s no way. So, now it’s Davante that organized this hot mess show of unity & support for AR? What’s the bigger stretch here? That’s quite a pretzel.

My brain has blown clean off my shoulders at how readily accepted these convoluted tangents have become.

Denver Broncos held out players.
Green Bay Packers held out players.
They might be making a trade.

Simple.

Acceptance, my friends. This is happening. AR is not coming back to the Packers. There’s nothing we can do to change that. I’ll support the team, and whatever they need to do. Gutekunst & LaFleur have earned my trust.

Like with all conspiracy theories, the more people the proposed theory touches the more likely that it will be leaked.

GBP management could NO WAY tell the top 5 receivers to sit out OTA's and not a one of them says that as the reason they are NOT in attendance.

Same with the non-attendees in Denver. The players, especially those on the roster bubble, would look askance at management for asking them to sit out, and someone-somewhere would spill the beans.

I buy the trade stuff, but the group non-attendance with no story exposed is a bit of a stretch.

This conspiracy theory would not simply cover the players on GB and Denver, but their agents, significant others, multiple franchise employees... No way something like that stays under wraps.

Funchess is slower than the Packer TEs (a position he played at MI until his Sr year) and ESB is showing he is made of glass or finds reasons not to suit up.

Both are long shots to make the team with Amari Rodgers and faster, more ST potential WRs on the team.

To think the 5 didn't get together to agree to avoid the voluntary OTAs to throw Rodgers a bone is silly in my view. Of course they did. And I don't think this is a big deal in the long term view. And may be an encouragement to the sensitive, arrogant QB saying "we have your back, but get in here and let's get to work!"

I mentioned this in a different "thread".

Why are all these WRs not at OTA's? To curry favor with the QB who refuese to return to the team? What advantage is that? If AR isn't returning to the team or is going to be traded, why should they care about what AR or how he feels? He's not paying their salary. But if they know he's staying...then we all know AR and his "trust" issues! Recommendations from the Player's Union are all BS (in regards to this situation) . If you knew with a reasonable amount of confidence that Rodger's isn't coming back to the Pack...Why would any of the WRs including Adams not attend these OTAs? Think about it. If they think Rodgers can be vindictive, wait until they see the Packer FO!

I think it's safe to assume that the receivers know WAY more about what's going on than any of us do. I would imagine that they have talked to each other and that there's a good chance that Adams, at least, has talked to Rodgers. So it's hard for me to say that they are doing the wrong thing by not attending, even though I don't like it. Maybe this is actually a GOOD sign, because it suggests that they are assuming that Aaron Rodgers is returning to the team. If they thought Rodgers was done in Green Bay, I think they would be more likely to show up for the voluntary OTAs. That's just a guess, though.

Different year, and obviously a different set of circumstances. Last year there were no OTA's or preseason games. How did that work out for most of the young newly acquired talent in the NFL last year? Notice how the best teams were the ones who had mostly veteran talent. The older established vets do not want summer practice, the young guys really need it. I am a veteran fan, and I know change will always be needed. OTA attendance is needed this year. Proving you belong in preseason, as apposed to hoping you belong because of you draft status or name recognition from a previous year, makes it very important to show you can play in the NFL. PROVE IT!

Hey Ken,
I must have read your mind and posted this yesterday on a different Cheese Head topic:

May 26, 2021 at 06:11 pm

Missing the OTA's could be disastrous for St. Brown. If the Packers keep five wide receivers he could easily be the odd man out with the addition of Amari Rodgers who is our 3rd round draft choice this year. I like our group of tight ends and I could see the Packers easily keeping four or perhaps even five. In my opinion, Equanimeous St Brown has made a mistake by skipping the OTA's.

Adding Funchess to that group in trouble is spot on. The receivers who are out if they are doing it to support Rodgers may very well be considered as dissing Jordan Love when he needs them badly himself. The receivers making the team this year may need to play their best football in the event Rodgers heads west and missing OTA's certainly is going to enhance their ability to do so.

Awesome movie. I watched it twice. Especially loved the courtroom scene, the one where the girl shows her expert car knowledge :).

Nobody here thinks it’s odd that there was no blow back commentary from HC Matt LaFleur? Nobody thinks it odd that his response was more matter of fact? He wasn’t pissed off? None of that?

SNAFU

No we don’t think it’s odd. Thanks for asking. People are saying that the word on the street is that rumbling has been heard in Denver. Coach says he’s only concerned about the next game. Aaron doesn’t respond to his texts.

So much emotion! So many feelings hurt! Boycotts, team chemistry, Diva, divorce, trade, prima donnas, solidarity, massive ego, legendary ego, holds a grudge, LA actress, golf, Hawaii. Denver, Brady. What a wild off-season. What will we do between mini-camp and training camp?

The old Rebecca was much less provocative. What have you done with her?

The Bucks are on tonight for a playoff run and it is Baseball season. Like the underwear olympics, I don't give a damn about the snowflakes soap opera or OTAs. A pure football player can line up on opening day after skipping the Summer Session and have an AlL PRO afternoon. Just ask Jerry.

In the end the talent and special teams availability will win out, that has to go for the CB’s that missed too.

I know I will be rooting for guys like Begelton, Winfree and Bailey Gaither, I like the 4 & 5 WR to be hungry and wanting to prove themselves.

Of course what I want doesn’t matter I’ll be happy with whoever they keep, but I’ll root a little harder for the underdogs.

Thank you, neither has a place in GB. I went as far as stated even after last season that MVS and his bad hands also have no place on this roster. St. Brown and Funchess are building an excuse to be whacked, as they should be. That's how bad this GM is, these guys should have already been released.

This whole thing is a joke, if Rodgers isn't back in GB, I won't be watching this crap product they're going to put on the field. I'm not going to sit and watch and cheer for a QB that has no future in the NFL, and shouldn't have even been selected by GB..

Truth is most vets feel they got they had a great offseason last year with no otas. They did their own workouts and it worked for a lot of them in their opinion. Thats it. They might say hey rodg this ones for you but really its for them.

Yeah gravedigger, that’s happening everywhere. Melvin Gordon is doing that. I’m sure Jaire is too. Cheers!

Does anyone actually think virtual ota's are comparable to being at the ota's. My virtual diet is not working either

People the super bowl window is over for now ..

1. If Rodgers is Traded not fair to think love can come in and pick up where Rodgers left off . Not saying Love won't be good none of us know but let's be honest

2. If Rodgers is forced to stay in Green Bay and believe me know way this man gives up his salary and benefits and retires if dumb and dumber refuse to trade him . Rodgers is smart and just vindictive enough to make sure he takes a few dives throws a few balls away change enough plays and so forth .

In conclusion The MVP is no longer in Green Bay even if Dumb and Dumber leave him no option but to come back and play this yr that player is gone

BOth of these two could be cut now and you packer fans wouldnt miss a beat. Both have unsure hands and run lousy pass routes.

Wow! What a fun bunch of comments today! Lord Zakuza?!!! LOL. I have to admit, I've been a little frustrated over the Rodgers fiasco, but I'm learning to stop worrying about the Packers and love the chaos. Can't wait for tomorrow's posts!
