The Lass Word: A Packers Tale

Hey, it could happen.

July 28, 2021---The Green Bay Packers open training camp.  Aaron Rodgers does not report.  He is the only holdout.

August 14, 2021—The Packers play their first preseason game, hosting the Houston Texans.  Aaron Rodgers is still absent.  Matt LaFleur starts Jordan Love and the first team offensive line, but holds out the starting receivers, running backs and tight ends.  Love struggles to move the offense and is outplayed by Blake Bortles who plays the entire second half with the reserves.

August 21, 2021—Green Bay plays the Jets in preseason game number two.  Again, Love is not effective.  Fans begin to howl that he is a bust and there is a swell of sentiment that Brian Gutekunst should be fired so that Aaron Rodgers will return.  One bright spot however is running back Patrick Taylor, who breaks several impressive runs and establishes himself as the clear leader in the competition for RB3.

August 28, 2021—The Packers travel to Buffalo for preseason game number three.  For the first time, Matt LaFleur sends his entire starting unit on to the field to play all of the first half.  Jordan Love throws three touchdown passes, including a 72 yard bomb to Marquez Valdes-Scantling.  Love also runs for a score.  Fans are ecstatic.  Brian Gutekunst is widely praised for having the courage to draft what appears to be a sure-fire future Hall of Fame quarterback. Two days later, Adam Schefter breaks a story that Rodgers has reopened contract negotiations with the Packers.

September 12. 2021—Green Bay opens the season at New Orleans.  Jordan Love is clearly rattled by a loud, hostile, capacity crowd at the Superdome.  He throws three interceptions.  The defense, however, keeps the Packers in the game by sacking Jameis Winston five times.  Green Bay loses a close game when Alvin Kamara takes a screen pass 48 yards downfield to set up a last play, game winning field goal.

September 20, 2021—The Packers host the Lions.  Detroit uses the one-two running punch of Deandre Swift and former Packer Jamaal Williams to control the ball and keep Green Bay’s offense off the field.  An ugly game is decided by field goals as the Lions ruin the Lambeau Field home opener by a score of 9 to 6.  The next day, the Packers announce that Aaron Rodgers has rejoined the team and will start week three.  No details as to his contract are revealed by either side.

September 26, 2021—The game against the 49ers becomes one of the highest rated Sunday night telecasts in NFL history, as the country tunes in to see the return of Rodgers.  He shows a lot of rust through the first half, but after intermission, he finds his rhythm with Davante Adams, tossing a pair of scoring strikes to number 17, leading Green Bay to a heart stopping victory, preserved only by an Adrian Amos interception in the end zone.

November 28, 2021—The Packers take a 6-5 record into their week 12 game at home against the Rams.  With the score tied in the 4th quarter, Aaron Rodgers rolls out of the pocket after being pressured, but as he surveys downfield, he is caught and tackled from behind by Aaron Donald.  Rodgers falls awkwardly and doesn’t get up.  He is helped off the field and listed as questionable to return.  The Rams go on to win the game in overtime on a Matt Stafford TD pass to Cooper Kupp.  During the bye week which follows, Matt LaFleur announces that Jordan Love will start in week 14 versus the Bears.

December 12, 2021—On a frigid night in Lambeau, the Packers have their best rushing game of the season.  Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon pound the Bears defense for over 200 yards on the ground.  Dillon scores three times, one of them by pass reception, as the Pack upsets Chicago to improve to 7-6.  The following Wednesday, Matt LaFleur reveals that Aaron Rodgers is still not ready to return, and Jordan Love will start against Baltimore.

December 19, 2021—The rugged Ravens defense sacks Love six times through the first three quarters.  Blake Bortles is inserted in the final period, but he is equally ineffective as the Packers are shut out 14-0.   Matt LaFleur announces on Wednesday that Aaron Rodgers will play in week 16 against the Browns.

December 25, 2021—On a snowy, windy Christmas afternoon at Lambeau, it is clear Aaron Rodgers is not himself.  He struggles to scramble out of the pocket and throws inaccurately as Green Bay falls behind Cleveland 17 to 3 at the half.  Realizing his QB cannot continue, Matt LaFleur puts Jordan Love in to start the third quarter.  The second year signal caller responds with the best performance of his young career, throwing touchdown passes to Robert Tonyan and Davante Adams.  Amari Rodgers scores the go-ahead points in the 4th quarter on an end around, and the Packers make it a merry Christmas with a dramatic come from behind victory to improve to 8-7.  The next day LaFleur announces that Aaron Rodgers has been placed on IR.

January 9, 2022—After leading Green Bay to a Sunday night win over the Vikings at home in week 17, it is clear that Jordan Love is getting more confident and more consistent in executing the offense.  Needing to win to finish 10-7 and lock down a wild card spot,  Love throws ten completions to Davante Adams, including a pair of scores.  Aaron Jones runs for 120 yards and breaks a 40 yarder for another touchdown as the Packers win easily.

January 16, 2022—The Packers play a wild card game against the Seahawks in Seattle.  It turns into a shootout with Russell Wilson and Jordan Love both leading their teams up and down the field at will.  The Seahawks prevail when Wilson, with time running out, is flushed out of the pocket by a fierce rush from Rashan Gary, and pulls off one of his signature scrambles down field to the Green Bay 18 yard line.  A game ending field goal ensues and the Packers season comes to a heart breaking, yet decidedly encouraging end.

March 1, 2022—Aaron Rodgers, now healed and healthy, is traded to the Houston Texans, who have parted ways with Desean Watson.  The Packers receive a first round pick, a second round pick, and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, who immediately becomes Green Bay’s starter on the right side, giving Green Bay the best set of offensive tackles in the NFL.

Possible, but if this is what the future holds, probably better to trade Rodgers now. He will not command a 1st, a 2nd and a quality RT after coming off of IR and being over 38.

Why now?? Get several teams to bid for him in March when they have the cap room. It just doesn't make sense at all to trade him now. The compensation will be 2022 draft capital anyway.......

Gazing into the Crystal Ball...

Thanks for the well-written and entertaining off-season fiction Ken! A bit of lightness is welcome in the midst of the Packer drama. I can't disagree. At this point there's very little (I think) by which I'd be surprised! -JQ

No you’re not, or you wouldn’t have written such a jerkish reply to a respected sports news writer. What other news is there to report? We’re in the six week dead period now. He wrote a “future fiction” piece about what could happen this season, and it was a good read. Don’t be a knob.

August 28, 2021 Aaron Rodgers states he will sit out the season. Mark Murphy announces how disappointed he is in the QB, but tells him he will have the office set up direct wire transfer info for his repayments to the Packers to avoid any "complexities".

February 13, 2022 the Packers win SB 56 vs the Kansas City Chiefs 28-10 in a repeat of SB 1. Jordan Love passes for 175 yards going 16 of 23 - 0 int and 2 TDs, one each to Davante Adams and Amari Rodgers. But the win was powered by the Packers dominating run game behind their 3 pro bowl lineman Bahktiari, Jenkins, and surprising rookie Meyers and 140 yards from Aaron Jones and 105 yards from AJ Dillon. The defense also controlled the Chiefs with 4 turnovers (Ints J. Alexander, E. Stokes, fumble recoveries by K. Clark, P. Smith) and 4 sacks (Z. Smith - 2, R. Gary -1, D. Savage -1).

March 1, 2022 the Packers announce they have traded Aaron Rodgers to the 3-14 Denver Broncos for 6 draft choices in 2022/23 (2 First round, 2 second round and 2 third round), LB Bradly Chubb and WR Jerry Jeudy.

Hey, it could happen!

I think the injury you predict to Rodgers will come much sooner if he returns. Maybe after 4 weeks and possibly being 4-0, he'll pull the plug and watch the season circle the drain slowly but surely, collect his paychecks, and see himself traded possibly by the deadline for a pittance, like Favre to the Jets, with a final FU to the FO and the fans who now already have him swinging from the goalpost.

The point maybe is that when you have a Q HOF and you want to pass by him (and this will I think is clear as the sun) you have to try to get as much as possible out of his trade !!! and if it continues like this we risk getting nothing or much less than what we could have obtained (such as if we had traded it before the draft !!!!)
The consequence could be a complete failure on the part of the FO
That is why they are trying to save face in every way

I appreciate this article Ken. Clearly a preemptive offering to, gradually and gently, prepare Packers fans to the possibility of life without Rodgers this season. A future that for many fans fear, may become a grid iron dystopia - a futuristic tale - in which Green Bay devolves into a desolate wasteland with the loss of the one and only person who can prevent it from happening - the hero - "Man Bun" (no relation to Mad Max).

As for those who mock you and scoff at your prescience - let them prove - TODAY - that you are wrong!

Nevertheless, I truly appreciate you sharing your visions / snapshots of the future with us. In preparation, I shall begin accumulating essential Jordan Love and Blake Bortles jerseys and merchandise.

In spite no matter what happens after the Favre fiasco, the Packers don't want to look like complete nincompoops again and don't under any circumstance let Rodgers go for the next 3 years unless he retires! Murphy may be an idiot, but not a complete idiot!

But they didn't look like nincompoops after the Favre fiasco. They won a Super Bowl in Aaron Rodgers' third year as a starter--the same year that Favre broke down physically and retired. And they were contenders for most of the next decade. Management's decision to move on from Favre was vindicated.

Hey Packers0808,

Murphy & Gutekunst likely have zero chance of making him return to play for the Packers. The decision may all be 100% Aaron Rodgers’ - entirely. There’s a legit chance it has nothing to do with the Packers picking Love, the FO, etc. and everything to do with he and his new wife to be wanting to live elsewhere. Yet, he’ll blame the FO to deflect attention away from her.

That is what it looks like to me, my friend. I was stunned by his message on draft day and remain so.

I doubt he will change his mind.

I do agree that Rodgers seems to be looking for a reason for public consumption. The FO one is nebulous shifting from Love to past players. To me that suggests it’s a smokescreen and the shifting is because nothing really stands scrutiny.

Ken,
Kind of interesting sceneo, but it's just a dream and time to wake up. At this point anything I say is merely speculation, but one thing for certain; I've gotten tired of this whole routine and it's beyond time for Rodgers to come out and tell fans what is his beef, he owes it to us.

Tunsil? God no. How could they field a team if their 2 starting tackles getting $50 million? They're already like $35 million over next year, and they have 1 receiver under contract next year. No Adams, Tonyan, MVS.

They gain about $30-35M cap space with Rodgers' contract gone, and then Ball does his cap PFM stuff.

That's how.

Rodgers' cap hit is 39 mil with 17 dead. That's 22 million saved. Tunsil is due 26 mil next year. So now they are in worse shape. And Ball can't keep kicking the damn can with all of these void years. Yeah, the cap is going to jump significantly in 2023, but do we really want tons of that new found space spent on dead money?

I think that if the Packers acquire a high-salary vet in return, the first thing they'll do is re-work his deal.

Whatever the case, the Packers are going to be shedding salary in 2022...ARod or no.

Remember, if Rodgers goes, Davontae follows him out the door at end of '21. AR has the FO right where he wants them.

As to Gutey, I am more and more of the belief that he is bringing lots of talent to the GB roster. He may have alienated AR12 in the process, he had to look ahead to possible post-Rodgers. The funny think is that if AR12 continues to play at a high level, the job is his for as long as he wants it. Does he not understand this? MLF has a great system that is QB friendly and the roster gets better and deeper every year. As long as AR12 can play near his 2020 level, this is a SB worthy team. Thank Gutey and MLF for that. It is irrational for AR12 to insist on manufacturing this crisis unless he believes 2020 was a fluke for him and the 4th Q of the NFCCG is the real AR12 going forward. This is not only a relatively talented and deep roster, it is also quite young. The only major negative I see going forward (besides AR12's BS) is the salary cap in 2022. That was forseable back when they drafted Love and probably contributed to their reasoning for doing so. I still say the best course for the Packers' organization at this time is to trade Rodgers and to do so ASAP.

What you share Archie is why I also believe the Packers should have a mega trade that includes not only Rodger's but also Adams. I love Adams both as a player but also as a person. Just listen to him in interviews! The guy is everything we look for in a Packer.

However, he is almost 30-years old and he will command a lot of money negatively affecting our cap in 2022. Also, he may just leave the Packers and follow Rodgers (what I would expect) as Adam's has a shot at the HOF with Rodger's. Money will not keep Adam's around. A chance at the HOF would. Trade Adam's along with Rodger's and get young talent. The Packers team is young, as is Jordan Love, Love needs young WR's that will be around for several years to grow together just like Rodger's and Adam's have.
