Packers Select RB AJ Dillon in 2020 NFL Draft - Round 2

The Packers pull another surprise with their second round pick.

With the 62nd pick in the 2020 NFL draft, the Packers have selected power running back A.J. Dillon of Boston College.

MEASURABLES/COMBINE:

Height: 6'0", Weight: 247lbs,. 4.53 40 yd dash / 23 bench press reps / 41.0"" vert / 131" broad jump / 7.19 3- cone drill

CAREER NOTES:

Algiers Jameal "AJ" William Dillon is the grandson of College Football Hall of famer Thom Gatewood, who was the first African-American team captain at Notre Dame. Dillon played for a former B.C. offensive lineman (Paul Zukauskas) at Lawrence Academy in Connecticut, and he decided to sign on with the Eagles. He played only four games due to injury his senior year of high school but still racked up more than 600 yards and 12 touchdowns. Dillon jumped into the fray at Chestnut Hill as a true freshman, winning ACC Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-American honors by ranking seventh in the FBS with 1,589 yards (300 carries, 5.3 ypc) and scoring 14 touchdowns in 13 games (four starts). He started 10 games in 2018, earning first-team all-conference accolades (227 carries, 1,108 yards, 4.9 ypc, 10 touchdowns; eight receptions, 41 yards, 5.1 average) and cutting his fumbles from four to one. Dillon was the team's bellcow again as a junior, finishing among the national leaders in carries (318), yards (1,685), and 14 touchdowns in 12 starts (13 receptions, 195 yards, 15.0 average, one touchdown). The 2019 third-team Associated Press All-American and first-team All-ACC selection chose not to play in the team's bowl game to get ready for the draft.

The Draft Network:   (change link to the player's "full scouting report" at https://thedraftnetwork.com/prospect-rankings  )

CHTV DRAFT GUIDE:

Dillon was highly productive as a three-year starter at Boston College, eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark three seasons in a row. Leading the ACC in rushing in 2019 with 1,685 yards on the ground, Dillon garnered national attention as one of the top tailbacks in the nation. The Connecticut native is a physical downhill runner who should be a great mid-round option for a team looking to find a reliable halfback in a powerrunning scheme.

COMMENTARY:

Wait, is Mike McCarthy still in the building? Because a bruiser like Dillon who can get the tough yards in cold December games at Lambeau was surely MM's M.O. Dillon is built like a fullback, but runs like a halfback. He's a between-the-tackles guy, an inside zone or gap runner. I don't recall seeing him in the top-10 of anyone's board, yet here he is, the sixth running back taken. Some have mentioned Derrick Henry as a possible player comp, others have him as a short yardage specialist. The reality is certainly somehwere in between. One thing for sure, Dillon will make safeties very sorry they were brave enough to come meet him in the box. Perhaps the best thing to be excited about is his touchdown total. It's hard to keep him out of the end zone when he gets close.

Obviously, Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams are both on their final contract year, but still, what are the Packers doing with this pick? Nothing against Dillon, who was super productive for the Eagles, but would this be the type of back you would expect to replace one or both of those players next season?  I can rationalize the Love pick, despite not liking it. This one? I just don't know at this early juncture. Perhaps if the first round pick had been different, I'd be more ok with this. Perhaps I'm just flummoxed.

Finesse Offense, Ba bye.

"He's projected as a short yardage specialist, which means he likely was drafted way too high."

He looks nothing like a short yard specialist on tape. He looks like a 2 inches shorter Derrick Henry. Obviously Derrick left an impression on LaFleur. Personally, I'm tired of the Packers being a finesse team. I want to see the Packers run over people and this guy does just that.

Was he a reach? I don't know, maybe. But watching about 2 minutes of tape after spending all last summer watching Titans reruns, it's pretty clear why the Packers want him. I see a powerful runner and receiver with good hands who is crazy nifty for a man of his size and power on wheel and flat routes. It will be fun running play action with AJ Dillon back there too.

He was projected to the third rd. Packers low two pick not much off the mark. The power back they needed since Ryan Grant left. This is the guy who will get the 3rd and 3, move the chains and beat down on defenses; thereby saving Pettine's crew from fatigue. I almost sound like Old School, but this was a guy that fills a big need for this offense. A lot of whining on various blogs about the WR drought. When Philly bagged Reagor all bets were off and Lynch then paid a lot for Aiyuk. The round two wides are not much different from the fours. I'm hopng Gutedkunst moves up for Bowden. Proche is still out there from SMU.

No more having to manage Jones workload either! Like Lacy, start to run w/ a physical brand of fooball. Great RB to push Jones into the 3rd down role that best suits him.

Now LaFleur can get his outside zone run game cranked up w/o having to manage Jones workload (just like McCarthy had to). Jones can be used in the role that best suits him, 3rd down RB in the James White mold.

He picked up Wagner to fill the RT spot and covered his bet with Funchess for a veteran wide. Murray was there in the first, but as we all know the Chargers dumped a bunch of picks to Bill and moved in for the guy. Gutekunst was not going to pay that ransom , nor would the viqueens deal with him as Lynch paid out a 3 and 4 to move for Aiyuk. There were zero wides worth the one pick after the top six were taken. Most had Brooks pegged as a two pick, but Carroll liked him enough to go for it in the first. Queen's value does not match up with Love's. Mims drops the ball and is not a great route runner. Shenault? will he stay healthy? Gutedkunst has solid hits so far.

I guess since they gave up their 4th round pick to move up to get Jordan Love, they felt like they needed to spend their 2nd round pick on a 4th round running back to make up for it. Makes sense.

Bring Jones back and make him what he is... A 3rd down RB in the Jame White mold. Your mistake is thinking Jones deserves to be a #1 RB. He can't handle the workload and is too injury prone and small. Even last year the Packers had to manage Jones' workload, just like McCarthy did.

Now LaFleur has a RB he can use to get the zone run game going and take the pressure off Rodgers!

Come on NP!

The Packers do not have the talent to be true SB contenders and this draft was not going to put them over the top. The team have quite a few young players that need to step up and spread their wings. Love was a great pick if he turns out to be the player I think he will be. Dillon looks like he could be a great player and I think we all will be surprised at the impact he brings.

The Packers have talented young WR's and ILB's. It is time for them to step forward. The Packers need to draft 2 OT's.

Let's keep the faith and hope these draftee's turn out to be great players!

I understood the Love pick. Not this one. Gute doing the RAS thing. Feels like a pretty big reach. You don't draft a RB in the 2nd unless you're going to feature him, and Dillon will have a hard time seeing snaps this year.

Rebuild? But even that doesn't make sense. Truly confused. Gute had better be right or he needs to be fired by this time next year.

Also, I love college football (Michigan, in particular, being my alma mater) AJ was committed to Michigan before he de-committed to go to BC. After that, anyone who knows anything about college football has heard this kid's name being brought up.

I've said many times before.....never ever anticipate who the Packers might draft. I have been doing this for something like 30-years and never get it right.

I'll be honest, I really would have liked Justin Jefferson or Laviska Shenault, or Kenneth Murray amongst a few others. To be completely honest I had hoped the Packers would draft Jordan Love but didn't think it would happen. I am very excited when they did select him. I was around during the 1970's - 1980's and 1990's watching a 'lot' of inept QB's and never want to experience that again. I think Love was a very smart draft choice. I will acknowledge AJ Dillon blew me away. Not upset as I assume the Packers know much more than me and because I was completely unfamiliar with AJ. I think you will see Aaron Jones playing as a receiver much more often including in the slot and out of the backfield. I do think the Packers have better young WR's than most give them credit for.

I believe the Packers have some young talent at ILB and here is hoping they develop and step forward. My biggest concern is the Packers OT position. I see Josh Jones continues to be available but how do the Packers move up for him?

The Packers went into the draft needing WR, TE, OT, DL, and ILB and after two selections they haven't picked any of those selections. Very interesting!!!!

Not surprised the Packers took a RB early. Not in the least. Jones is too small and injury prone for a heavy workload and last year the Packer were still managing his workload just like McCarthy did. LaFleur wants to get his outside zone run game cranked up and he needed a RB that could handle a heavy workload and allow Jones to be what he is best at. Jones should be a 3rd down RB in the James White role in NE. Dillon will be a nightmare for Defenses to handle late in games and late in the season.

Wasn't the pick I would have made, Josh Jones or Baun would have, but this pick makes perfect sense!

LOL... All the wannabe GMs who know better. --- Gute has more football knowledge in the tip of his pinky than most of you could ever dream of. --- You need to stop with the bs... you're making all Packer Fans look ignorant.

I'm already looking forward to "Love hands the ball to Dillon for the TD & the Pack secure another NFL Championship". ---- When is the only question.

If love pans out that’s the point. I hope he does but everyone now is acting like he’s Rodgers cuz of what happened in 2005. Common sense says Green Bay is trying to relive the past. Every other team with a hall if famer is playing to win now so if that wasn’t the plan then why extend Rodgers. I think love can maybe be something but if he isn’t that this team is back to the 80’s.

When you say tip of his pinky, we hope you mean his little finger??? There are a lot of doubt out there based on Round 2. My hope is Dillion can learn to be a slow LB. Because he is not an impact offensive starter.

I rather liked Dillon and thought he would be a good late 3rd or 4th round pick. I do think LaFleur will be happy with thebig bruising RB, but he won’t be Derrick Henry. He will be a nice complement to Jones.

Let me tell you. AJ is a beast. Was he a slight reach? Maybe.
Probably would have been a high 3rd rounder for some other team.
I have been following this kid since he committed to UMich (still upset that he recommitted to BC). He is fast and has got so much power. I am thrilled with this pick. I can see him being a better Derrick Henry for sure.
GO PACK!

Honestly, if you have followed this kid in college you'd agree. He single-handedly carried the BC offense for two straight years (even playing through injury). I'm just saying I wouldn't write him off as just a short third down converter.

Believe me, I'm not writing him off as just a short third down conversion back. The little film I've seen of him says otherwise, as do his measurables. A 4.53 40 and 41 inch vertical on a 250 pound back is crazy. I think it's just as crazy though to say he'll be better than Derrick Henry. I would love, love, love to be proven wrong!

Glad to hear he can play through injury because it looks like he took quite a pounding with the high number of carries he had at BC. Hope he's still got a lot in the tank. Even the Earl Campbell's of the world break down after too much pounding.

Top notch players at LB, Edge, and DL left on the board to help fill needs and you take a WHAT, a RB? Yeah that will help fix the terrible run stopping defense of last season. It would have made more sense to take a WR to fill a need than a RB. And even a top OL makes more sense.

Agree.... Maybe Dillion can convert to ILB???? Instead of an impact RB like Antonio Gibson that fits MLF offense, we draft a slow, big RB with high mileage (carries) in college. This team needs speed.

Goal line, third down and red zone were and have been difficult areas for the Packers. This kid can immediately make an impact as a lead blocking back, goal line/third down runner and pass protector. Strong, 4.53 40 and tough to bring down. Good pick.

I like the player. He will bring a physical presence that we miss in the running game. Jamaal Williams will be gone after this year.

That being said Gute seems to be admitting Dexter Williams (no one seems to remember him) was a wasted pick last year. It is also fair to question that so far, two picks in, Packers have not addressed the ability to stop the run, or added speed to stretch the field on offense. This is my problem with this draft and the entire offseason to date.

Dillon could be the thunder to Jones’ lightning. However, I think we could have taken him in the 3rd and taken a WR or OL now.

Gute should have traded out of 30 and taken a WR early in the 2nd and maybe another WR or OL with this pick. If he got a 3rd with the 2nd for the 30 he could have taken a LB and an RB in the 3rd.

I’m not a draftnik by any stretch but I don’t see where Gute is going with this draft. I wanted to focus on offense in this draft but this is not what I was thinking or expecting. I’m not waiting up for the 3rd round. Everyone stay well. Thanks, Since ‘61

Since 61 -Of course your right. Jones really should have been the pick after a QB was Taken. If you listen to CBS on the Love pick. They predict #12 will be gone within two years. A Grade D was awarded. With #12 leaving, we will lose are OL. Jones should have been the pick. Dillion was another LOVE pick. Meaning Gutey is falling heads over heals with his picks. People who scout these guys know what makes sense.

You would have to move down to the high third round to pull that off. Dillon was talked about all winter on this G.B. blog. No more throwing incomplete on third and two.

Of the 58 backs whom were "draftable" 3 fit the Packers athleticism profile. Dillon was one. Like his game a lot, he can also play teams and FB. AJ is a baller, I live in New England, watched him quite a bit.

I have watched a lot of his youtube highlights, I was thinking "Hey, this kids a beast! Maybe in round 4 after we get our WR, OL, and LB, if this guy is still there that be a nice luxury pick up" .... But in ROUND 2?!?!? When we still haven't addressed a SINGLE need?!?!? What is the plan Gute? do you have one? what are we missing here?

As long as Murphy can fill enough seats to keep the Titletown District in the black, all will be well. Vanilla front office, young coach who won't rock the boat too much, and a reasonable shot at 8 wins and possible wild-card berth will be fine with the Board of Directors.

This is another statement pick. First, a QB that ran an up tempo offense ( as opposed to Rodgers running the play clock down to 3 every play) at Utah State. Then they pick up a back that looks like a faster, quicker Marshawn Lynch. The message from LeFleur and Gutey being, we're eventually moving forward with our plan, with or without your approval, Aaron. The running game is going to be a greater part our offense, get used t it.

Silly me. I thought we needed a WR, MLB, DL or an OT. I hope I'm proven wrong and end up with egg on my face. I really have loved what Gute has done the past 2 years, but I don't see any rhyme or reason to the picks so far. Who would have thought to pick players you really don't need and leave the old holes in your team and shore up your weaknesses. It sounds like a whole new drafting philosophy. Oh, I hope I am do wrong.

I'm far from the most knowledgeable fan on this site and I don't follow college football to the extent I used to so take this as the musings of a intermediate-level but long time football fan. I see several ways a team can improve their passing game. A great quarterback is of course a necessity. GB has that (or at least used to, time will tell if the succession of sub-100 passer rating seasons was the start of a steady decline in Rodgers' skills or more a reflection of the offensive talent around him and just being on a less talented overall team, including the defense). A stable of good WR's helps. We have only one, so far, and maybe a decent TE time will tell. What else helps a passing game? A great running game, which opens up the play action but also keeps the defense guessing and maybe creates some match-up problems if they can't predict run or pass with much confidence. And if the RB's can catch the ball out of the backfield all the better. We definitely have one and now maybe two RB's who can catch the ball. Opens up a world of possibilities in the pass game and keeps the defense guessing. What else helps a passing game? A good O-Line that allows time for routes to progress, and also opens holes for the running game. I'd say our O-Line skill set has been tailored more towards good pass blocking than good run blocking, obviously because we tend to be a pass-first offense because we have a HOF QB.

What I'm trying to say is that drafting WR's is not the only way to improve the passing game. And has been noted by others, with all the WR's being drafted, some decent veterans are going to be available this summer, veterans who can contribute right away (historically rookie WR's don't contribute and that's especially true with Rodgers as QB). I believe a quality WR2 can be had in free agency (think Terry Glenn or Andre Rison, although they both became available for a different reason and who knows, maybe Stephan Diggs wears out his welcome in Buffalo in short order, but don't even think about picking up Antonio Brown).

And what about improving our defense, that was absolutely stampeded by the 49ers twice last year? Well, a good run game helps with that too by keeping the defense off the field.

I'm hoping that even if Rodgers skills are declining, which they probably are but hopefully slowly, we can take a page from Denver in the twilight of Elway's career and maybe AJ Dillon becomes Rodgers' Terrell Davis (who was a seventh rounder if I recall correctly). Truth is none of us knows how this will play out, not even the Packers front office, but I trust they have a plan and will adjust that plan to take advantage of what players are available in the rest of the draft and free agency.

Just my two cents.
