Surviving Sunday: Packers news, notes and links for the football deprived

It's hard to believe, but in only two short weeks, Packers Training camp begins and the 2017 season is officially underway.

Adam is once again in NYC this week, seeing some of the best doctors in the world at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The hope is that the intense chemotherapy treatments he has been undergoing has had enough of a positive effect so as to allow surgery to be a viable option. You can keep up to date with Adam's cancer-slaying journey at caringbridge

As for the Packers, it's time for them to re-establish their dominance in the NFC North, and shut up those Vikings fans who actually believe their team is ready to surpass the Packers. If Nelson, Cobb and Lacy all return to form,  the Packers offense should rediscover their groove, especially with the addition of Jared Cook.

While the goal is always to get to the Super Bowl, this year likely holds a greater sense of urgency. Aaron Rodgers is now 32 years old. Mike McCarthy has coached in Green Bay for a decade - few coaches last longer than that without a few trips to the Super Bowl. Five players on the Packers offensive line (including 3 starters) are in the final years of their contract. What this team will look like next year will be a huge question mark.

I am in full WIN NOW mode. Are the Packers? Are you?

Packers news, notes and links

  • Did you particpate in Jerry Kramer 4 HOF Day the previous Friday? Did you send an email or a letter to the HOF senior committee members? If not, there is still time before they meet in August. All the details you need to know are here.
  • Tex Western over at Acme Packing Company lists his choices for the 10 best Packers players on the roster. Interesting that three offensive linemen are named, and only one is a tackle.
  • Andrew Mertig of PackersTalk.com throws out a rather bold prediction about Davante Adams.
  • So it took Jordan Rodgers appearing on Batchelorette to let us all know that Aaron Rodgers has a rather uncomfortable relationship with his family. Petty jealousies or just another thing to blame Olivia Munn for?
  • Jason Wilde delves into Aaron Rodgers' comments about the concussion issue in the NFL.

Non-Packers links and other nonsense

  • I saw my first pure Country music concert a few weekends ago - Garth Brooks at Yankee Stadium. For such a "huge" event, I found it quite underwhelming. After several times proclaiming how "we're going to be here all night, he barely made two hours, and that includes four songs from his wife, Trisha Yearwood, who frankly I enjoyed a lot more than Garth. Luckily, I wasn't there Saturday Night, where rain delayed the start of the show until midnight. Put Springteen in Yankee Stadium, and you're getting three hours of high energy performance at the minimum. Throw in the relative simplicity of Brooks' music and lyrics and it was a real yawner for me. Give me Lucinda Williams or Chris Stapelton, country artists with grit and songwriting talent.
  • I rarely delve into politics, but if like me, you can't see yourself voting for for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, there is a 3rd party candidate who is starting to get some notice, former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson. I don't know a lot about him yet, but will definitely be doing my research.
  • Another terrorist attack in France. The lack of respect for human life has hit a new low. Will defeating ISIS stop terrorism? Likely not - the problem is much bigger than that.

Thanks for filling in and an updating us on how Adam is doing Al, I hope the Packers have half the fight in them that Adam has showed us this past year. If so the SB is in the bag!

RE: Not wanting to talk politics. Agreed. But I'm also agreed with you Al that I won't be voting for either of the bums that are on the ticket this year. Write in for me. Depending on how angry I am the first Tuesday of November, I might just be writing in my cat Zelda. :D

Why waste your vote on Zelda? My cat Bubba is a better choice. I didn't like the last Bubba, but this Bubba is fixed, so we shouldn't have some of those problems.

"I am in full WIN NOW mode. Are the Packers? Are you?"
I'm always in full WIN NOW mode, but, also, understand that there is so many factors you can not see now, which influence outcome... If Packers will give the best from themselves I will be sad but with no objections on the result...

"I am in full WIN NOW mode. Are the Packers? Are you?" No - but then, here is my definition of "win now mode:"

A) Stretching the salary cap in various ways to bring in the last piece or two that might be necessary to win it all, even if we have to manipulate the cap hits of any FAs we re-sign, or if it means re-structuring the contracts of some of our stars to manipulate the cap;

B) Re-signing more of our FAs than TT otherwise would. (Eg, while I like Murphy, Rotheram, Walker, and Taylor, I doubt any of them will play at the level we've enjoyed from Sitton and Lang).

C) Altering our draft strategy to emphasize quality and need (I think TT drafts largely for need, but that's another subject) over quantity.

I am not all in - yet. I'd advocate watching the play of our rookies and 2nd year personnel very closely, and giving them some playing time, even if it hurts a bit, so that we can better gauge which veterans we can allow to walk to garner comp picks. My rough estimation is that Sitton and Lang would net 4th round picks, Lacy a 5th, and Bakh probably a 4th, but could be a 3rd I suppose. I think Tretter will get a better offer than most think, but still would be worth probably only a 5th. Perry, Peppers, Cook, Datone, Hyde and Barrington are also FAs. What they are worth depends on how they play. Remember, though, that the NFL has a strict limit of 32 comp picks total, and no team can earn more than 4. Last year no 7th rd. picks were awarded: it wouldn't surprise me if no or few 6th round picks are awarded next year.

I'd like to garner some comp picks if we have guys in the pipeline to replace our losses or if the contract demands get outlandish, and go to Win Now Mode next year. Not that I don't want to win this year - which seems a reasonable possibility given health and a few bounces.

"The lack of respect for human life has hit a new low".

So true Al, precisely and perfectly stated. Regardless of where one stands on these hot button issues, ask whether society's current acceptance of each encourages the devaluation of human life: 1) The death penalty (state sponsored killing); 2) Healthcare rationing for the elderly (some lives are more important than others); and 3) Abortion.

Once again, not debating the merits of any particular issue. The point is when our government/society accepts that some lives are more important than others, that message becomes ingrained.

Sports are an escape from reality. When our teams win it's a time of great joy, especially if they make it to the top and win it all. We forget about the sad state of affairs everywhere else in the world for a brief period. Since the beginning of time there's been a lack of respect for human life. Now we get to see it every day with social media with the invention of the smart phone. As for politics, what choice do we have ? I heard a lot of people saying they won't vote for either candidate. Prisons, college, health care have become big business that drain the average workers pockets. So, GOPACKGO, give us an escape for the next six months, and let the rest of the fans suffer even more after this election year.

Al -nice job filling in for Adam and thanks for doing it. I'm with you in full win now mode. This team needs to adopt a take no prisoners attitude and do whatever it takes to win the SB this season. Defeating ISIS will not stop terrorism, I agree with you. One of the primary problems is the lack of leadership not only in the U.S. but in most of the major countries in the world. Terrorism and the lack of respect for life will continue until we can resolve the underlying societal issues that are driving many of the violent and divisive forces around the world. Enough politics for now. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Jersey Al,
Um, if you want to keep politics off this site, stay out of commenting on political statements. YOU feel that a political comment on abortion is a contradiction, as it happens, I disagree with you. I feel it is a WOMEN'S choice, and I am a happily married man. Sorry to see that you are allowing your OWN political feelings to come through. That is disappointing to me. And I apologize to those whose opinion is different from mine as this country needs to cleave together more than ever! I've been on this earth over six decades and have never seen such hatred and divisiveness in an election year before. Let's PLEASE just get back to talking football only on this site.
Thanks,
Spock

You completely mis-interpreted my comment, which based on the breadth and tone of your comment, doesn't surprise me. The contradiction was the commenter saying to keep politics off the site and in the next sentience railing on " right wingers" and women's rights.

There is a clever comment to be made about your adding the "i" to "sentence" in this context. Anyone? Bueller?

Just win baby. Wow that article on Davante is crazy. If we get 1000 yards out of him this offense is gonna be rolllllin! I have my fingers crossed for Monty but he's just a big fat question mark at this point which is very disappointing. Sorry to hear about Garth that sounds pretty lame. I'm more of a rock metal or punk fan but I respect most music and love concerts. Going to a Blink concert in a few weeks and Trivium (top 3 favorite bands) shortly after. I gotta say if you really wanna see a band give you your money's worth and play tons of music hands down best band Foo Fighters. Saw them last year and they must have played 25-30 songs. Epic performance even with Dave in a cast and on a throne. God speed to Adam ..go pack go!

saw them last summer. Probably too late now. Brian Johnson can't perform live anymore and the bass player is retiring after this tour.

Saw AC/DC at Alpine Valley on their "Moneytalks" tour in the 90s. Great show...still have a few "Angus Young Dollars" tucked away in a book as a momento...

Machine Head is my bucket band. I have seen everyone from Slipknot to Ozzy and everyone in between but Metallica and Machine Head are the only 2 big bands that I have never witnessed love. (I like Metallica just hate Lars ).

Found myself at RockUSA in Oshkosh this past weekend. Slipknot, 5 Finger Death Punch, In This Moment, Disturbed and many more. Never saw more involved and dedicated fans, but I must admit, I don't get it. They all scream the same to me.
