Rookie Josh Myers Likely to Start Week One

Head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Tuesday that rookie Josh Myers is on track to be the starting center in week one.

Head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed that Green Bay Packers rookie center Josh Myers is the likely starter in week one.

“Josh Myers, more than likely will be our starting center,” LaFleur said Tuesday.

This came right after Aaron Rodgers said he likes what he sees from his new center. During an interview with former teammate and current NFL Network Analyst James Jones, Rodgers was asked to name an under-the-radar guy who can help the offense in 2021. Rodgers showed no reservations about choosing the rookie as a guy he has been pleasantly surprised with.

"I gotta say the center, Josh Myers. For a guy to come in as a draft pick, as a rookie, and to be that comfortable, it's pretty impressive,” said Rodgers. “He’s very comfortable with the system. I like the way he’s stepped in and controlled the huddle and the calls the first four days.”

Myers making a strong first impression on Rodgers is a promising sign following the loss of Corey Linsley. Linsley was the team’s starting center from 2014-2020 and was named an All-Pro last season. Green Bay had one of the best offenses in the NFL with Linsley, but they were forced to let him walk in free agency due to a lack of cap space. The team then decided to use a second-round draft pick to find his replacement. So far, the transition is going smoothly.

A lot of credit goes to Myers, who built up quite the reputation before joining the Packers. As a senior, Myers was an All-B1G and All-American selection. Myers’ draft selection was an easy decision for General Manager Brian Gutekunst, who was impressed by his leadership at Ohio State.

“He was one of the centers that kind of ran the show there,” said Gutekunst.

Myers was a two-year starter for the Buckeyes and helped direct one of the nation’s most high-powered offenses. Last year, Ohio State finished in the top 10 nationally in total offense (529.9 yards/game), rushing offense (266.8 yards/game), and scoring offense (46.9 points/game).

Green Bay finished with the number one scoring offense in 2020 and hopes to continue that trend given Myers’ history. He has spent a lot of time with the starters in training camp, and aside from one botched snap during the first practice, has done an outstanding job.

Expect Myers to continue to take a bulk of the reps during practice to try and build chemistry with Rodgers leading up to the season opener. Rodgers and Linsley had impeccable chemistry, and while it is unfair to expect that from Myers right away, building that connection in practice should benefit the entire offense.

The fact that Myers is already receiving high praise from his quarterback and head coach must mean he is off to a tremendous start.

Protect Rodgers!. This is really awesome. A rookie getting High praise. Myers solved more then what meets the eye. A rookie replacing an All-pro. And $10,000,000. I'm seeing just how Gute can solve his cap problems. BY Splitting this team into two sections. Offense and Defense. Don't over pay 1 for the other. If his players he brought in per Free Agency. Can't win it all. Move on. Don't re-sign any of them. I'm looking right at Turner, Amos, and the smiths. Their not ALL-Pros. And Gary, Alexander, and Savage, must be paid. The next group brought in, MIGHT! So why put a Target on Rodgers back? The guy who they can't over-pay is Adams. And you must pay Jenkins and Tonyan. We have watched these camp battles at WR, and TE for years. If Gute can replace Linsley. Adams won't be hard to replace either. Did he win a ring yet?

Agreed with all except Z. Unless the wheels fall off this year, the Packers will be drafting low again, where it will be nearly impossible to find an impact OLB. Galeai is a smaller speed rusher type, and if the Packers are going to be playing a lot of nickel we will need the size and versatility of Gary and Z.

All the other guys you listed - I suspect 2021 is their last year playing in GB, along with (likely) Lowry, Burks, Jackson, King, and maybe Patrick. The roster is gonna get a WHOLE lot younger next year, for better or worse.

Yes, in retrospect it is clear that Gute and his FO team were drafting the core of the next generation Packers roster. As I said before, Covid and the Cap just up the day of replacement. Sucks in a lot of ways. It's clear Gute was prepared to play Cap games to keep this current group (including Rodgers) for another three years. But the virus set off a series of events which brought forward what amounts to a too high Cap wall for the Packers to climb over. With the bulk of contracts of 3-4 years players coming due and with no increased TV money until 2023, the Packers are stuck between a rock and a very hard place for the short term. Rodgers will not be the first to go. With the current Cap, Patrick and a number of lower tier veterans are on the chopping block this season as well. As TGR has pointed out, the Packer's Cap number for this year for end of roster players and signing FA is close to nonexistent. Something's got to give. There will be surprise cuts. It all comes down to how good the FO and coaches think the rookies and second years can preform in this "Superbowl or bust" year. Glad I'm not Gute...

Packer fans take it for granted, but this front office is excellent. (Well, when led by somebody who knows their stuff -:)
