Robert Tonyan suffers torn ACL in victory over Cardinals

The veteran tight end will miss the remainder of the 2021 season.

Robert Tonyan's agent confirmed the worst fears of the Packers and their fans when it came to the knee injury suffered by the veteran tight end in last night's victory in Arizona.

"I'm sick for him. I'm sick for us," head coach Matt LaFleur said after the game. "My heart goes out to him."

The former practice squad player caught 52 passes for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns last year in a break out campaign. Tonyan finishes 2021 with 18 receptions for 204 yards and two touchdowns in eight games.

😭

Trade deadline is Tuesday. I'd love for Gutey to find a Maxx Williams type of player. AZ isn't going to part with Williams, of course. Wonder what Kaufusi looks like in practice? I'd like more receiving chops but it is late in the game to find that.

A safety would not go amiss for better depth behind Savage and Amos.

It’s a shame for him hope he comes back next year , I wonder if it’s worth trying to get back Sternberger, if possible

No. He adds nothing but incompetence and unavailability.

This offense is probably too complex too bring in a new TE. It’s not an easy position anyway. Matt has too many roles for that position. A wasted time out was used because Daguria did not know where to line up. I think it’s him and Daffney in that role and Lewis on the line.

Perhaps, but they brought in Dafney as a rookie in mid-October last year and he was playing significant snaps before the year was up.

That’s terrible luck. He had set himself up for a decent contract, but now the market for his services is going to be very limited .

Well, maybe he stays with the team that believed in him, that developed him, and that gave him a chance.

Agreed. GB knows what Tonyan brings to the table. Unless someone just gives him crazy money, I would think Gute would come up with fair market compensation for him. Unless things go really south, he'll be a Packer next year.

Praying for a full recovery, but now he needs some emotional and spiritual support.

And given that he hasn't been racking up big stats and will now miss the rest of the season, the Packers could do some very reasonable incentives for significant dollars. Incentives would be not likely to be earned and would thus not count against the cap in 2022.

That’s what I’m hoping. I also hope he’s as good as new, which isn’t a given. He’ll be 28 .

Regardless, adding in Lewis age and the lack of accomplishment by the others, I’d be taking a real, real hard look at this position in the off-season.

For this year, we’re going as far as we can with the team we have. I don’t think we’re adding anybody who is going to be the difference.

Rotten luck for Tonyan and the team. He's in a contract year and the team is a legitimate SB contender. Hopefully he makes a full recovery.

Time for Daffney and Deguara to step up. You know Big Dog will do whatever is necessary.

Unbelievable bad break for Tonyan and the Packers. I wish him a full and speedy recovery. Another bit of adversity to overcome. GPG!

Does that injury happen if Tonyan doesn't have to play on three days rest? Even if the schedule didn't play a role, I'm still not a fan of TNF. Feel so bad for the kid.

I guess why some people look always for smeone to blame and come up with the q crazy theories.
How can you blame the schedule and how will you know it happend because of there?
Crazy, crazy, orange crazy. Thats football, getting hurt its a big part of the game and it could happen at every training or even at home.
Further than that we do not have much season ender besides him.

So my guess would be the downvotes is for the cry baby, drama queen complaining and the orange like logic for the "total smart".

Its just football........no one to blame. I know, a lot of people feel better if they do but its a sensless as ever.

"So my guess would be the downvotes is for the cry baby, drama queen complaining and the orange like logic for the "total smart". What does that even mean?

The intention of my post was to advocate for player safety. I think a schedule that allows athletes to get their bodies as close to recovered as possible before being pounded again makes sense. I understand it's advantageous for the NFL to look at players as commodities, we must have our entertainment after all. I was asking a question.

Croat, you make a great case for the interconnectedness of the body. I don't know what caused Tonyan's ACL to tear, but I don't think playing football on three days rest helped.

One of the reasons that I have never liked TNF is because of the increased risk of injury due to the short week.

However, in Tonyan's case I do believe that his injury was caused by the turf. He seemed to stumble or get a cleat caught just before he was hit on the play. It was probably a combination of the stumble and the additional pressure from the hit which caused his ACL to give out.

Point being the same injury could just as likely have occurred if the game was played on Sunday if it was the result of the turf and/or the hit on the play. It's the NFL guys are going to get hurt.

How we overcome is the key going forward. Best wishes for Tonyan. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

Well, it’s one of those things you can’t possibly know, so you have to choose what you’re going to believe.

I once heard a theory that these guys are pushing their bodies so hard training in the offseason that they aren’t getting enough recovery time and that’s making them more susceptible to injuries. It makes as much sense to me as any other theory.

ACL torn can be product of many reasons. It happens also to non athletes, who are not in training.

It might be a product of wrong trampling during his life, for example. It may be caused by not ideal bones conections in the knee, or x or o legs, as byproduct of genetic profile.

There is to many reasons that it is not possible to point any of the cause as sure.

To confront you, I will say that, if playing the game is the reason, blame should probably be on playing turf (it would be interesting to investigate how many players got torn ACL playing on the State Farm Stadion turf as visitors). But this is pure speculation...

Makes great play, starting to really impact the game and immediately goes down with severe injury. We just have all the luck. Get better soon. Bob

Maybe its time to see what Tyler Davis or Bronson Kafusi has as there doesn't seem to many options in the FA market to replace Tonyan at this time.
