Ray Nitschke almost takes it to the house

The linebacker was a better receiver than you might remember.

I just love this.

Ray was tough, but as we can see he wasn't the fastest guy on the field. Would have liked to see him score though.

That was at the end of his career. How many players could have done that. He was a one legged player at that point.

I watched him finish a game badly hobbled. Wouldn't go out. I would take him over Ditka any day.

I remember this game. It was his last season....that's why an HOF linebacker is on the field goal unit.

Loved the man. He started out as RB but was a better fit at LB in Green Bay’s defense under Lombardi. Thanks for the clip.

Ray was a fullback in his college days. He remains the best defensive player the Packers have ever had and one of my all time favorite players.

As a long distance fan I relied on my subscription to Ray Nitschke’s Packer report as a primary source of Packer news and information. Then the Internet came along and Jersey Al’s AllGBP and here we are.

Thanks Aaron for the great clip. Since ‘61

61, I used to get the Packer Report too, it was the only way outside of Wisconsin to get any Packers news and would get giddy when I saw it in the mail. I think I still have a stack because i never threw them out. BTW, in the spirit of transparency and full disclosure you knew me as Fordham Ram but like our former coach the name got old and stale so I came up with something light after I tried to do the tongue twister Peter Piper picked a pack of... and out came pickled packers.

Do you have the issue where the editors mentioned their Dewey Decimal Football league ? I read that and developed our fantasy football league after theirs. This was in 1979 ! We had our league from 1979 to 2016 with essentially the same guys ! What fun !! Fantasy Football has exploded since then. I think we were the forefathers, thanks to Packer Report !

He played Both ways at Illinois, but was drafted as a LB.

Since we are showing some nice old footage Nags, in memory of my hero who just passed I would like to post this revamped documentary I just found on the ice bowl. It held my attention from start to finish. Unfortunately, the link won't post, but it's on YOUtube and it's a beaute.

I used to get the Packer Report. I was about 10 or 11 years old. Mailman would see me waiting each week. He asked what I was waiting for. I told him the Packer Report! After that he would always hand it to separate from all the other mail. The issues were always a week behind. On a hot summer day in Queens, NY over some kool aid we would go over the result and Ray’s editorial opinion. I swear the mailman became a Packer fan. Rarely seeing the Pack on tv this was the only way to get news and information and create a picture. Times sure have changed.

In that regard for the better. At that time we were lucky to get a paragraph in the CT and NYC papers on the game the following day. Sometimes not even that.

Summary was something like Dickey hit Lofton with a 25 yard TD toss as Packers triumphed. Then nothing.
No box score, passing stats, rushing stats. Nothing. Always left you wondering what happened.

PackerfanNY, Careful about that "kool aid" comment; it could be used against you by some on this forum, lol. :)

LOL.. I actually thought about it before I wrote it. So, I drank the kool aid! What can I say it’s the literal truth.
In the 70s that stuff ruled. Almost like drinking sugar straight up. Hey I was 10. :)

My favorite Packer as a youth. I wear his jersey for all of the televised Packers' games I can get here in Oregon. 66 was a tad slow but always tough. Just like me ... minus the tough part.

Ray was my favorite for years. He was a great man. I read his book years ago. He died too soon, I was shocked and to this day I wish I could have met him. I never forgave Dan for benching Ray. Ray was slow but with his experience he was always in position to make a play.

Thanks for the video clip. As a young boy he was my favourite player and I think my childhood memories of him formed my definition of “toughness”.

Thanks to YouTube we can find some old clips that take us old-timers back to childhood.

NitschkeFan,

Hey, did you just change your name? :-)

My favorite D player. Almost never a mistake. Glad he was a packer.

When Dick Butkus got on the bus you gave him your seat, but when Ray Nitschke got on the bus everyone got off !!
