Rashan Gary suffers hyperextended elbow, will try to play vs Vikings
The 12th overall pick of the 2019 draft currently leads the team in sacks.
By PackerAaron
The Packers have seemingly dodged another major injury bullet.
Packers’ OLB Rashan Gary plans to brace his hyperextended elbow to see if he can try to play Sunday vs. the Vikings, per source. But Gary also has an MRI on his elbow scheduled for Tuesday to see if anything gets in the way of his plans.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) November 15, 2021
Gary currently leads the Packers with 5.5 sacks, including a sack in each of the last two games.
He is also fifth among edge rushers in the NFL in pressures and tied for fifth in quarterback hits.

This is good news. Seems there was no structural damage but it will be sore.
Gary is a warrior. Life in the NFL for physical teams...play hurt but do not play injured. Knowing how cautious the Packers medical team is with even hurt players...this tells me the docs and trainers have told Gary: "Playing next Sunday is up to you. Elbow is structurally sound."
Hope so!

Absolutely true about hurt vs. injured, lesson learned in grade school wrestling.
That being said, playing hurt can lead to more hurt, and at some point the pain can affect production, even if you're not injured.
I'd just as soon sit Gary if he's still in pain if at all possible and give him two full weeks to get 100% and get ready for the run to the SB.

Oppy……there are two games before the break , followed by the 5 games down the stretch, plus playoffs.
Of the two games, I’d rather beat the Vikings, because losing at home to us….again….would make them 4-6 and be a stake in the heart to their season. I also think that it doesn’t matter if we subsequently lose to the Rams, because we’re going to win the division and they’ll be a wild card, behind AZ.
The 5 remaining games after the break include games at home against Bears, Browns, Vikings and road trips to Baltimore and Detroit. I see us finishing 13-4 and getting the #1 seed,

That makes sense, I was failing to account for the bye week.
Also, the news on Mercilus is a massive blow to our OLB depth right now. Ouch.

5 wins ahead, with 6 games (7 weeks) remaining would be tantalizing.
He could go into the Vikes game on a snap-count (like KC and Lowry did the last 2 weeks).

Isn't the MRI to determine if there was structural damage?
Leatherhead
November 15, 2021 at 05:18 pm
Short answer is yes……but
Back in the days before MRIs, doctors diagnosed and treated patients by examining, maybe doing a test……….I’d bet the physician said something along the line of “it looks hyperextended. We’ll do an MRI to make sure”.
So now, the operating assumption is they’ll rehab this week and give him a brace, If the MRI shows something, then that’s different.

Qoojo, an x-ray will show if the olecranon process (bony protuberance of the elbow) has been damaged. It basically fits into a depression in the humerus [upper arm], called the olecranon fossa, to lock the elbow out during extension.
The MRI will show the extent of "soft tissue" damage - ligaments, tendons, meniscus.

Awesome news !
Our defense needs to carry the offense for a while longer and it would be devastating to lose Gary right now.

I’m more concerned about Mercilus, I think the Packers have someone lined up already I forget the name but he was in for a tryout and is known to Lefluer.

Yes, biceps can be season-ending. I tore my bicep, needed surgery, and was in a sling for several( 6 wweks?, can't remember exactly) then physical therapy.

Yeah I'm really concerned about Mercilus as well. That looked gruesome too.

It’s two months until the playoffs start. You can do a lot of rehab in two months.

Agreed!
There are 7 games left and a bye week making it 8 weeks till the end of the season. Then the Pack will either have another week before the 1st playoff game, or possibly two weeks should they win the NFC. Meaning the injured players have a 9 to 10 week rehab period. Guys like Gary, Jones, Jaire, Zadarius, Mercilous, and Myers potentially have a lot of time to rehab and get back in playing shape.

Gary just keeps getting more destructive every game he plays. I agree that some rest might be best versus throwing him in there with a brace?
What scares me is that now we have little or no depth here. Looks like the GM will be busy again finding additional depth.
Same goes for RB. Who do we have for RB depth after Patrick Taylor? Gutekunst is going to be a busy guy I suspect...

I really liked Dexter Williams this past preseason, and he'd come back to the Packers knowing the offense.
I understand he's with the Browns as of now, but maybe we could get him without giving up all that much. He could be worth a lot to us, though.
As a bonus, I think Williams did some kick returns in the preseason with some success.

To many fumbles. That is why Packers let him go...

Wow - there's a bolt from left field! I wonder if he's still semi-fit enough to mold into match-worthy.
.......Be awkward in the locker-room seeing Gary put on the #52 jersey.

gp,
Maybe not signing WR, Beckham was another smart move by Gutey. Save the remaining cap money for RB and OLB replacement.

The life of a GM, time to search through the ruffage for some more help, they have to earn their stripes also.

It's like American Pickers, discovering the treasures amidst the ordinary.
It actually could be a lot of fun for the GM and his assistants, but then again there's a lot of pressure to get things right.

Swisch,
Guarantee Gutey has a long list of players available that he already has ranked by position. It is a matter of picking up the phone.

Yeah, pro personnel department spends 365 days a year tracking all NFL players and probably a number of guys that aren't even in the NFL.
They've got boards and charts and a 'rolodex' full of #s at their fingertips, for sure.

We get breaks when our players don't get breaks.
Still hoping for good news about Mercilus, after his first sack yesterday as a Packer.
It'd be great if at least either him or Gary could play the next two games, and the other rest until after the bye week when we play on Dec. 12.
Having both healthy for the final five games may be even more important, though.

Would rather rest him a week or 2 than lose him to a season ending injury
Swisch
November 15, 2021 at 02:59 pm
If we rest him for the next two games, then there's a bye, which means Gary would have until the following game on December 12 to heal -- almost a month from his injury yesterday.
So he'd miss two games, but have almost a month to heal before our final stretch of five games before the playoffs.

Conversely, if we lose the next two then we’re 8-4 and probably need to win out to have a chance at the #1 seed.
Still, if you had told me last May that we could be 8-4 and have a healed and rested bunch down the stretch, I’d have been happy about that.
I’d really like to shovel dirt on the Vikings season, though.

It's a tough call.
We do get the Vikings again later in the season, but it's at their place.
We could win either game without Gary, and we could lose either game with Gary.
As fans we get the fun of having our say, but it's up to the coaches to make the tough call.
They get paid a lot, though.

I believe that more important game is vs LA Rams. Because of tiebreaker. They are now at 6-3 and we should not let down to the same score at the end in the case we lose. What will happen in the NFCW it is hard to predict!

Having watched the Rams-49-ers game Croat I'm convinced that every team in the NFC is beatable by the Pack (unlike when the Pack faced the 49-ers a few seasons ago). No team is standing out week-on-week as indomitable.
Personally, I'd rather see the Packers assure their place in the playoffs, then go into them with a healthy squad and momentum - and let the seeding take care of itself.
....... Murphy would want the #1 seeding again. 2 home games guaranteed at Lambeau would be good for the coffers.

I think we can beat the Vikings without Gary, next man up. Hopefully get Bak back and get offense going. I would rather see Gary recover until week after bye.

With Delvin Cook the Vikes have a hell of a RB threat. Throw in the two WR's they have and they have a dangerous receiving core. Without Gary and Mercilous and only two OLB's remaining on the Packers the pass rush will be severely depleted. Suppose they will move Oren Burks outside for the Viking game. Defensive coordinator is going to have to be creative in his blitzes in order to get home. This game has potential to be closer than many might think.

Not sure he's gonna play for a few weeks. I was wrestling a friend in H.S , he was a little taller and had all his weight on one arm. I tried to sweep it to take him down to the mat and it hyperextended his elbow. He looked at it and popped it back in himself. He had a stick shift car so it was comical to see him go from steering with one hand and reaching across to shift....but I did feel bad. I would say it took 3 plus weeks for him to lose the sling. I'm sure Gary would have some sort of a brace set-up once the swelling goes down and he can move it.

Thank God the Gary injury was not worse. Rashan has been working hard and is really turning into a really good player.
All that being said, this is the Packers we are talking about. They are very conservative with injuries. My guess is you won’t see Gary or Aaron Jones until after the bye. Sometimes you have to protect players from themselves, This is one of those times.

Time to call up Tipa Galeai from the PS, he's there for a reason. I'm sure we will see Oren Burks playing some more OLB along with some snaps there for Devondre Campbell maybe. He's can set the edge better than Burks or Galeai can and he's played some OLB before for Atlanta.
