Ranking Aaron Rodgers’ Best Five Games of 2020

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers returned to MVP form in 2020, throwing a career high 48 touchdown passes and having a quarterback rating of 121.5, the second highest of his Hall of Fame career.

With the MVP award scheduled to be given out before the Super Bowl, here is a look back at Rodgers’ best five games of the 2020 season. Games are ranked solely based on Rodgers’ performance although ties are broken based on the overall play by the offense and the team.

5. Week 12 vs Chicago, Packers 41, Bears 25

Rodgers always seems to play his best against the Bears and this year was no exception. The Packers franchise quarterback was very efficient, completing 21-of-29 passes for 211 yards and four touchdowns.

The Packers cruised to victory, taking a 34-10 lead when Rodgers threw his final touchdown of the game. His touchdown tosses went to four different receivers with Davante Adams, Marcedes Lewis, Allen Lazard and Robert Tonyan each catching one.

The Packers attack was balanced in this game, rushing 39 times for 182 yards and passing for 211 yards and four scores. Green Bay held the ball for 37:44 in a dominant performance by the offense that could have been even better if they needed to score more points.

4. Week 17 @Chicago, Packers 35, Bears 16

Rodgers closed out the season with a four touchdown performance against the Bears in a 35-16 victory that clinched a first-round bye and home field advantage throughout the playoffs for the Packers.

Rodgers completed 19-of-24 passes for 240 yards and had a quarterback rating of 147.9.

With the Packers trailing 7-0 after one quarter, Rodgers found tight end Robert Tonyan for a three-yard touchdown pass. He later connected with Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a 72-yard bomb that gave Green Bay a 14-10 lead that they never relinquished.

Rodgers’ other two scoring passes went to undrafted free agent Dominique Dafney and to his favorite target, Davante Adams.

3. Week 9 @San Francisco, Packers 34, 49ers 17

Rodgers was hot early and never looked back. This game wasn’t as close as the final score indicated as the Packers rolled up a 34-3 lead midway through the fourth quarter before San Francisco scored twice late in the game.

On the Packers first drive, Rodgers threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Adams that gave the Packers an early lead. Later, Rodgers found Marcedes Lewis on a one-yard touchdown pass to give the Pack a 14-3 advantage.

The final two scoring plays went to Marquez Valdes-Scantling. MVS caught a 52-yard strike and then grabbed a one-yard touchdown catch on a play that saw Rodgers scramble away from pressure and find the receiver for a sliding catch in the end zone.

Rodgers quarterback rating in this game was 147.2 and he threw for 305 yards and four scores. The Packers too the lead early in this contest and never looked back as they got a small semblance of revenge for their loss in last year’s NFC Championship Game.

2. Week 1 @Minnesota: Packers 43, Vikings 34

As training camp started, Rodgers said he went back and watched game film of himself from 10 years earlier and saw some mechanical things he was doing differently over the last few years. It didn’t take long for those observations to pay off as Rodgers started the season with an outstanding performance.

A-Rod completed 32-of-44 passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns against an inexperienced Vikings secondary. The Packers rolled up 522 yards of total offense and looked like an elite team after lacking consistency a season ago.

Rodgers threw a pair of touchdown strikes to Adams who caught 14 passes for 156 yards on the game and looked unstoppable. The other two scores went to Lazard and MVS who scored on a 45-yard bomb in the final minute of the first half.

Rodgers final quarterback rating was 127.5 and he served warning to the rest of the league that 2020 was going to be a special season for both himself and the Green Bay offense.

1. Week 4 vs Atlanta: Packers 30, Falcons 16

Rodgers was at maximum efficiency in this game, completing nearly 82 percent of his passes. He threw 33 times and completed 27 of them for 327 yards and four scores.

Running back Aaron Jones caught the first scoring pass of the day from Rodgers on the Packers opening drive. The last three went to Tonyan who enjoyed a breakout game and established himself as a target that Rodgers knew he could count on.

Rodgers had a quarterback rating of 147.5 in this game and the Packers gained 403 yards of total offense. Green Bay scored touchdowns on three of their first four drives and never looked back as they cruised to victory.

Rodgers is the favorite to win his third league MVP award this season, something that puts him in elite company. The only other players to win the award at least three times include Jim Brown, Johnny Unitas, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Brett Favre. Like Rodgers, they are all considered among the best to ever play the game.
