Raiders 22 Packers 21: Game Balls & Lame Calls

The Green Bay Packers traveled to Winnipeg Canada to face the Oakland Raiders in preseason game three.  The Raiders ended up winning the game by a final score of 22-21 with a late surge, but that wasn't the biggest loss the Packers dealt with on the night.

The surface at Investors Group Field was found to contain some problematic areas during pre game warm up's.  That should have been omen enough but the NFL decided that the game should go on so the less-than-half-full stadium of fans could get their money's worth.  To avoid the bad turf spots on field, they simply adjusted the field to 80 yards with make shift end zones on either side.  Some Pop Warner fields are in better shape than what we saw in this contest.

The game that ensued was another laughable preseason display that saw several Packers players leave limping or on the cart.  Others made a strong case for their roster spot.

On to the night's best and worst.

Game Balls

Trevor Davis

Davis finally returned from the injury suffered over two weeks ago and made the strongest case of anyone on the team for his roster spot.  He led the team with five catches, a touchdown and a jet sweep for a nice gain.  Davis also handled one punt return.

With the unfortunate injury to Equanimeous St. Brown, any type of bubble that Davis may have been on has turned into a comfortable roster spot at this point.

Tim Boyle

Boyle got the start and wasn't awful.  He finished with two touchdown passes and a 113.9 quarterback rating.  Neither Boyle nor DeShone Kizer have looked good enough to give us confidence that they can carry this team if called upon (please no!) but Boyle looked much better this week than he did last week against Baltimore.

It's looking like the Packers want one of Boyle or Kizer to back up Aaron Rodgers this season and after tonight, it appears to be Boyle's job to lose.

Ty Summers

After missing many tackles last week, Summers had a game high 10 tackles in this game.  If Curtis Bolton's injury is long term, Summers showed that the Packers may have more insurance at linebacker then previously thought.

Chandon Sullivan

Three pass break up's will get you on this list, in general.  As a guy fighting his tail off to make the roster and as an undrafted free agent, it's this list and a standing ovation.

Lame Calls

The NFL and Investors Group Field

The easiest award of the night.  The venue for knowing the NFL was playing a game there for a long time and still not being prepared.  The NFL for allowing a game to be played in obviously sub par conditions.

The NFL can miss us with their claims that player safety is a priority.  Preseason game or not, an 80 yard field and sagging turf is a really pathetic look by an organization that brings in nearly $10 billion annually.

This is beyond a lame call.

Penalties

12 to be exact for over 100 yards.  That won't put a team in many good positions to win.  Hopefully chalking it up to the wonky conditions and that it gets cleaned up in a hurry.

Others to mention:

  • JK Scott had a 66 yard punt and averaged 47 yards on the night.  Not bad but he may actually have been upstaged by. . Kizer, who coffin cornered a punt of his own.  Gotta love the preseason
  • Rashan Gary, Curtis Bolton and Equanimeous St. Brown all left with what appeared to be more significant injuries.  Football is a game of attrition but the Packers could suddenly find themselves quite thin at linebacker if both Bolton and Gary are out for an extended period of time.  Gary's agent tweeted that Gary was well after the game.  Bolton was using crutches and had a brace on his leg.  St. Brown was also on crutches and had a walking boot on his left ankle
  • Dexter Williams and Tra Carson had some decent runs.  The running back position still looks to be one of the most interesting with only one preseason game left
  • Do they really have to play one more next week?

Turned out to be worse than billed in every way.

Bolton may be the biggest impact among the injuries.

Nice game by Scott.

Davis and Shepherd both had good nights on both O and ST.

Really limited opportunities in the second half after initial O line meltdown though I thought Nijman was relatively decent at LT.

Dexter flashed both good and bad, but would like to have seen more of Ford and Hill. Lazard got few opportunities as they essentially just ran it till the 2 minute period.

Sullivan again showed as did Sheldon. I thought Summers had a much better showing tackling

At least the O line in the first half did well. Boyle has a ton of time. Maybe Boyle needs to play a quarter before he takes the field. Terrible for the first 20 odd minutes then woke up.

Not sure what level of opposition the Raiders played but they looked poor on O and D till we were playing our bottom of the roster.

Hard to tell how much we gained from that. Particularly in the second half. Sullivan and Sheldon should play more perhaps and that Jamerson is not going to cut it.

A mess, and thats without addressing the organizational farce.

Agree on Davis, Sheppard and Scott. I thought Lazard missed an opportunity.

The running game looked decent in the first half. Almost reassuring after last week. I thought Boyle looked like a competent backup.

I saw the sack Nijman gave up when he first came in and then a few plays after that I called it a night. He gave it up to Cowser, who is entering his 4th year in the NFL with 1 sack and 32 tackles to his name.

Quitting on a crossing route is a big problem. AR already hates throwing over the middle.

I've been high on Davis and Shep. They are a similar player, but both seem to be a better fit for MLF's offense than the taller, slower WR's like Lazard and even Allison. They also have more value on special teams. Last, having two players of this body type protects against injury, which Davis has had trouble with in his Packers career.

Hopefully last night's "game" solidified their spots on the 53 and hopefully #11 can have a healthy and productive season!! I'm pulling for him big time.

If you told me three months ago that we couldn't afford to lose Curtis Bolton I'd have laughed you out of the room. Puts a lot of pressure on Summers to plug the hole and stay on the field.

Not sure what the next move is...anyone know if Bernardo Harris is available?

Lame Call to the NFL.

Goodell should be ashamed about making the players play on that mess. But he probably isn't. He doesn't seam to have any shame.

It’s interesting because Gruden said that the field was fine and that it was the Packers decision to use the shortened field and not play their starters. Matt said that because the Raiders did not play their starters, he decided not to play his.

I'm in the minority here and probably most everywhere else, but I didn't think them playing on the IG field last night was that big a deal.

A regular season game no way, but this was just a glorified practice, like any other preseason game. From what I could tell the surface of the field wasn't much different than any other turf field. Because they sectioned off the bad spots in the endzone, they didn't come into play.

The injuries to Gary, ESB and Bolton had nothing to do with the surface. They were injuries typical of when bodies collide. Nothing more. Could have happened wherever they played.

Both Head Coaches said the field conditions were no problem.

To me it would have been stupid to trot both teams to Canada and then cancel the game. The practice looked to me like any other preseason game except they didn't kick-off, which the NFL wants to do away with anyway.

I know the default setting for many fans is to lacerate the evil corporate NFL overlords whenever something even remotely controversial comes up, but this wasn't worthy of everyone's ire. If it becomes common place, sure, but this is not worth getting riled-up about.

Agree with what you say except "lacerate the evil corporate NFL overlords".

I arranged a family gathering for the Hall of Fame game in 2016 that was cancelled AT GAMETIME due to POOR FIELD CONDITIONS. The level of fans ire from travelling to Canton, Ohio and showing up at game time (not easily done because the stadium is in the middle of a crowded residential neighborhood) and from the wasted cost in terms of time, travel, and money was over the top. And, the "corporate NFL overlords" did NOTHING to compensate the fans.

Not a Roger Goodell fan anyway, but I would think someone entrusted with protecting the game for the long run (and for the benefit of the owners) would have staff in place to ensure field safety well before the day of the game. Guess compensation of $40 million or so per year isn't enough for him to have that much sense.

How about just don't trot them to Canada to an empty stadium. If they want to have a team in Toronto, etc that mantians proper facilities then that's a different story.

Game Balls:

Trevor Davis - He showed up! Plain and Simple. Anyone questioning whether he should be on the 53 learned that yes, he does!

JK Scott - He is becoming a weapon. Between booming punts and placing the ball where it needs to go. He doesn't get talked about enough as a guy taking a 2nd year jump, but he appears to be taking that big jump.

LaFleur - I'm truly happy that he decided to sit the starters. Can't protect everyone, but I'm glad those guys didn't play.

Lame Calls:

Playing this game- Seriously, the NFL had months to figure this out. And here it comes down to hours before the game to determine that the field isn't 100% safe? How does that happen?
This game was a complete joke. Plain and Simple.

Injuries - I don't know if any of these injuries were due to the playing surface, but they lost a lot of guys in this game. Gary's was not from the playing surface. EQ's could have been from the playing surface. And I dont' know about Bolton's

Notes:

I didn't put Boyle in my game balls. While he did end up playing a strong game overall, he started the game right where he left off from last week. Terrible! He was something like 2-9 until he went 8-9.

I seriously hope these penalties don't carry over to the start of the year. That Sheldon tackle late in the game was textbook hit. Can't hit a guy any better. And do they seriously just throw flags any time GB has a big run? Every big run there was a 'holding' penalty.

One game left and we are under 2 weeks until we take on the Bears....

Used to be a textbook hit. Now must lead with the shoulder. I get the safety aspect: we saw that with the hit on ESB, but I don’t like it in the context that Sheldon was in.

The Hall of Fame Game the Packers were to play in, was cancelled, one year, due to noxious fumes emanating from the sprayed-on decals/logos on the turf. This Winnipeg field had areas on it where players could get injured just by walking on it. Why didn't they cancel this game? Was it that the NFL didn't want it cancelled so they could showcase American Football, and maybe expand it, in Canada? Was it money? Whatever it was, all the talk from the NFL about promoting safety and protecting players just went down the toilet.

Boyle engineered three TD drives in one quarter with two passing TDs. The only scores the Packers had the whole game. Yes, he started out slow, but what QB doesn’t do that at times...including Rodgers...as we have all seen.
Tim Boyle now has 5 TD passes in 5 quarters of preseason play with a 113.9 QB rating. He is showing the skill set to be a good NFL QB and with the more experience he gets, the better he will develop. He’s a QB who can get the ball into the end zone and not settle for threes. He’d be an exciting QB to watch lead the Packers if Rodgers does miss some games.

I wouldn't put too much weight on the actual stats, just because there's a lot going on that isn't geared towards pure production (running plays just for practice, etc.). However, from the eye test, he looks more comfortable in the pocket than Kizer and he doesn't consistently waste plays like Kizer does. 20% of passes from Kizer are completely uncatchable, that doesn't happen with Boyle.

I think it's a pretty easy decision at this point.

Neither Boyle nor DeShone Kizer have looked good enough to give us confidence that they can carry this team if called upon (please no!)

I disagree, I think Boyle finally put it all together, and lets not forget Kizer, who has done ZERO since coming to GB, let alone in this preseason, has had the benefit of playing with the 1's and 2's, and could do nothing.

Boyle, once he settled down a little bit, was dominant!! He's made beautiful throws all preseason, and we finally got to see him run with at least the best of the roster last night, and he looked just fine. He made beautiful throws, even one's to St. Brown and Kumerow who were well covered dropped right into their hands. If St. Brown had held onto his he would have had 3 TD passes.

Dude played awesome, he's markedly better than Kizer! If Kizer ends up our #2, I'll be left wondering what the hell they're seeing that just isn't translating to the games, because the dude has no game.. He's exactly what Cleveland and Green Bay have seen thus far, a totally inconsistent football player, if that was going to change, we'd have seen it by now.

Boyle won this job last night.

I think you hit the key guys.

I've been a Davis detractor pretty much since he was drafted, but he finally looked like a decent WR running routes and making plays last night. The thing is that the other WR on the roster bubble (Shepherd and Lazard) both looked at least decent, too. Unless there's a long-term injury, this is going to be a hard cut-down.

Boyle did as much as we've seen from either of these backups to stake a claim for the #2 spot. Kizer should be (even more) nervous.

They've got to find a way to keep Chandon Sullivan. Remember that he played NFL snaps for the Eagles last fall, so he's not a greenhorn, but he's active and has shown up repeatedly.

I personally think with the injury to EQ, (assuming that he would go on IR), that Shepherd locked a spot on the 53 as the 6th WR. Now whether they decide to keep 7 or not we will have to see. If they keep 7 Lazard would be that guy.

I thought it was telling that Moore wasn't on the field until late in the game. Both Shepherd and Lazard were ahead of him.

I think that, if you look at primary roles, this could muddy the waters a lot. Certainly, we think of Lazard and ESB as similar, physically, but ESB was projected to take some slot snaps, which is where Shepherd almost exclusively fits. I think Lazard could also fill some depth as a move TE and, with Davis likely on the roster, Shepherd's ST value is diminished.

I think Lazard would be the winner if ESB heads to IR, and that they try to get Shepherd to the PS. UDFA slot types are a dime-a-dozen. If they give Shepherd a high-end PS paycheck, I think he makes it there.

I think you swap those two. Shepard has shown he can play a key role on ST.
Lazard has shown he can play on the boundary and I’m not sure you could ask him to block.

I have it the other way around - I think Shepard makes the 53 and Lazard is the PS guy. Davis has not always made good decisions on returns and Shepard seems to be a natural for returning punts and kick-offs. I think Shepard is our return guy and Davis makes the team on his WR ability (and I can't believe I am actually saying Davis is a good WR but the tapes this year don't lie...).

The Packers have one more game to sort out WR, but with ESB and Moore seemingly out of the equation, it will be interesting to see what Davis, Shepard and Lazard do in the final preseason tilt.

This. Davis showing up as a true WR justifies Shep getting a spot as the special teams ace.

The ESB situation is tricky. You can't IR him now without making him subject to waivers, and if he clears waivers and ends up back to us, I don't think we can reactivate him later if he goes on IR during camp. The extent of his injury will determine if they just roll with him on the active camp roster, keep him on the 53, and IR him after cutdown day (meaning they have to bank on some other guys clearing waivers to resign after they IR him), waive/injured him now, hope he clears waivers, and then release him with an injury settlement and hope he sticks around so we can resign him when the settlement + 3 weeks runs out, or, if it's a short term 2-4 week injury, just roll with him on the 53 and leave him as inactive till he's cleared to practice.

My guess, unless they're estimating a 2-4 week return timeline, is that ESB is gone. If he's good enough to make our 53 it is unlikely he will clear waivers or still be available once his injury settlement runs out, as he can sign with any team once released.

Just because Davis looks good in PS games doesn't mean he's leapfrogged over all these other guys who have also looked good or produced in preseason, or are locked in based on past performance. I like the fact that the light looks like it's turned on for him, but I don't think his role has changed significantly.

Davis, I think, is still a depth piece at WR whose primary value is as a gunner on punts and as a return man. He might be a guy who sees a few chances in specialty packages in the offense, but I think that's it barring more injury at the WR position. His solidifying a spot on the roster is a significant hit to Shepherd.

He's definitely not in the top 4 for receivers but depending on how much the sweep (or threat of the sweep) will factor in for the run and short pass game he could be on the field more than we think as a decoy and threat that has to be accounted for.

As jannes b mentioned, Davis has more value in MLF's scheme than Lazard or Allison. MVS is a straight line speed guy without the quickness of Davis and Shep.

Bottom line, I think you'll see that Davis and Shep will be a lot more than special teams players.

If ESB is going to be out more than 4 weeks and the Packers want to play him this year, I could see a world where they cut Lazard, keep ESB on the 53, and if Lazard clears waivers signing him and IRing ESB. Especially since Sternberger practiced but hasn't actually cleared the concussion protocol and we don't know if Graham will be suiting up week 1.

I think the picture will look clearer when the Packers suit back up.

Based upon reading here and some video various places, Trevor Davis probably will make the roster. He looks improved but I'm not yet convinced his on-field decision making in return situations is also improved.

I saw one report where EQ has a broken ankle. If so, that might open the door for Shepard and/or Lazard. Both will make the roster if the Packers keep seven WRs.

Losing Bolton might be a bigger loss than Gary.

Boyle put up some good numbers and played well from what I saw. Kizer didn't do much to help his chances.

If Boyle did win the #2 spot as you mentioned (and I think you are correct) than there is no need for Kizer to play in game 4. Boyle needs reps and experience and Id play him either all or most of game #4. That in itself would help confirm whether he truly should be #2.

I would think Kizer is not eligible for PS, so if true than he either stays on the 53, or the Packers cut him.

Good God! Kizer is horrible. Why will they not give Manny Wilkins a fair opportunity to show what he can do? That was lame.

Both Davis & Shep need to be on our final 53 man roster. Nijman too. Yosh played great at LT - his most assignment sure outing yet. Summers redeemed himself, as did Dexter Williams. Scott kicked the snot outta the ball. Kumerow looked solid, as did Tra Carson.

Lancaster, Adams, Greene & Josh Jackson showed well early.

I found a lot encouraging, but hated seeing us play there, and I want Kizer out, Wilkins in for a change.

I think Wilkins will be released with the hope he can be signed to the PS.

The game venue was decided by the Raiders. This was what they chose as their "Home Field". They could have played it in several other places, including Lambeau, but chose Winnipeg, Canada. That's why Gruden wouldn't criticize the field conditions. This mess was the Raiders fault.

I did not watch the game but the announcers remarked a coupe of times how Nijman was often too slow to react and pass rushers blew by him. Offensive Holding seems to be an emphasis this year and hurt our run game. Boyle struggled in the beginning of the game when it looked like a blitz but later adjusted well. Lancaster and M. Adams looked good.

"Boyle struggled in the beginning of the game when it looked like a blitz but later adjusted well."

I agree with this from PatrickGB. This explains what Boyle is learning to do in his SECOND year and Kizer still can't do in his THIRD year. Kizer might be the more athletic of the two QBs but Boyle helped himself more last night.

I do not believe that’s true after reviewing each of his plays, twice. Did not see a single missed assignment from Yosh Nijman, especially in pass pro.

A bit more clarity on the WRs after this game. Davis and Moore needed to have big games - Davis did and Moore was once again nearly invisible. Moore will not make the 53 this year. Hopefully they can sneak him onto the PS.

If the report is correct and ESB has a broken ankle, he is headed for IR for the season (generally an 8 week recovery period plus several weeks to regain your conditioning).

That leaves Kumerow, Davis, Shepard and Lazard competing for three spots assuming they keep 6 WRs. Lazard could be the odd man out as he did not do much against the Raiders and he will need a big game next week to stay in the mix.

Packers 2nd team O and D lines were awful. O line had a million holding penalties and was consistently getting pushed back in the pocket and the D Line got zero pressure.
Missed tackles were again prevalent, see Crawford’s lame attempt on the goal line. Summers looked lazy blitzing on Peterman’s 2nd TD pass.
Not sure there is a ref in the league with the balls to pick up that flag after Sheldon blew up that RB.
Davis and Shepard looked good though.

I'm wondering if the lackluster play of both back up quarterbacks will force us to keep both, and cost someone else a roster spot. I hope not. I also thought that LaFlauer's play calling when Kizer was in could have been better. The timeout situation at the end was confusing on the screen, but I don't think game management was good either, I expected the coaching to be better than this.

I'm not sure I agree.

As we all heard/read, all the GB starters were held out as a precaution. There aren't 33 starters. Wilkins was held out. If he's held out, this might...MIGHT...indicate what the Packers think of Wilkins compared to Kizer.

If they want three QBs (two active QBs/ one PS QB), this might say Wilkins is headed to the PS and Kizer is released or traded. I think Kizer will be released because I can't imagine anyone trading for him.

Didn't we say the same things about Hundley after the 2017 debacle?

It's a QB league and Kizer's experience (such as it is), youth, cheap contract, and physical attributes will carry some weight.

Your comments about Kizer are all accurate. My observation is Boyle played much better in the first half with the #2s than Kizer has with the same #2s.

Conversely, Boyle has played about the same with the 3s/4s in previous outings as Kizer did last night. Boyle's numbers with the 3s/4s might be a little better.

It seems Boyle, with no regular season experience, is developing better than Kizer, with 15 starts (Cleveland) and several more regular season games as a backup in Green Bay, has. It's possible this is Boyle's flash-in-the-pan moment. In addition, Boyle is on a FA contract and is less than Kizer in the fourth year of his rookie contract.

It's possible that we'll see both Kizer and Boyle carried. I think part of that will have to do with how they view QB1's health. If they see him as completely recovered from back and knee issues (and nothing else springs up), they might go with just 2 QBs and see what they can scrounge from cuts to either add to the PS or sign outright. But if there's significant concern over ARod's health, they might be forced to keep 3 QBs out of camp.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE describe to me what the play was that EQ got injured on?
And Curtis Bolton too.

Didn't see bolton. EQ caught a nice pass but went to the ground more quickly than the saftey was planning for. Ended up hitting him high and the first reaction was that he probably had a bad concussion. More bad luck than dirty.
Down on the ground for awhile. Then came up and couldn't put weight on his leg.

Game balls: M Adams and Tim Boyle.

Lame Call: NFL stupidity, again.
Unwatchable preseason football.

Should not make comments about both QBs playing with the same 2s without watching the game in which case you would know that was not true

Kizer will be the backup QB just because. They traded a player who is starting in Cleveland's secondary for him. They said they wanted to draft him. He's young. He's experienced. And yes, he's bad... but they think it's because he's had to learn many systems and they want to believe he'll come around. All I see is Hundley, but Gute won't want to admit a mistake this quickly. Kizer will be the backup and Boyle goes to PS or makes the 53.

I don't see Hundley at all. Hundley struggled massively, but after a rocky start he started finding ways to win and started showing improvements in reading defenses, and has gone about 25% as a starter. Kizer last night looked lost, and was constantly stepping up and trying to throw layups over rushers because he couldn't keep his eyes downfield. Maybe a first team offense and OL gives him more options and time, but he still looks like a QB that has yet to win a pro game and can't think faster than the pass rush.

I don't think Hundley is the best answer, but at this point I'd be much happier with him over Kizer. I don't see AZ parting with him, though, as they really don't have options behind him if their rookie QB is the day 1 starter.

Trevor Davis had a great game and Boyle was the best quarterback. Beating up on Oakland’s soon to be cut players should happen. The years that both players have been here they’ve improved. That said the limitations of those players is apparent. All this Trevor Davis is a playmaker now against the raiders scrubs is nonsense. He has been hurt and unreliable over the last 3 years. I would rather give shepherd his shot and hasn’t been injury prone. Shepherd has made plays with Boyle and Kizer throwing him the ball. I think he can eat up a nickel/dime corner with defenses focusing on other players. Shepherd will flourish if given a chance. Trevor Davis will get injured again and the team will be back at square 1. Time to move on!

Perhaps the surface is already outdated, the material itself. We need to re-lay out the material.
