Quinten Rollins - 2015 Packers Player Report Card

Quinten Rollins

  • Age: 23
  • Born: 7/15/92 – Canton, Ohio
  • Height: 5’ 11”
  • Weight: 195
  • College: Miami (Ohio)
  • Rookie Year: 2015, 2nd round
  • NFL Experience: Rookie
  • Career Stats and More

Expectations coming into the season:   With two veterans leaving via free agency it was hoped that Rollins would work into the cornerback rotation and with his athleticism also contribute on special teams.  Rollins was known more as a polished point guard on Miami of Ohio’s basketball team than a cornerback on their football team where he played just one year.  A competitor and athlete is what Ted Thompson saw in Rollins and he plucked him in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft.  Rollins showed talent early on, was injured, yet made his mark on this Packers team.

Player’s highlights/low-lights:   Against the St. Louis Rams Rollins recorded two interceptions including a 45 yard return for a touchdown.  Also showed promise in a blitz package and recorded his first sack against the Chicago Bears. Knocked out of two games – Denver and Washington - with injuries and missed the Carolina game as well.

Level of expectations met:  Coming out of camp Rollins appeared to be the more polished of the two new rookie draft choices.  As the season wore on Randall overtook Rollins.  Yet the Packers had to be pleased with his body of work especially given his rookie status.

Grade:  B-

Player’s contribution to the overall team success:  Active for 14 games during the regular season and started four.  The Packers coaching staff has defined “eye control” as the one area that Rollins need to work on.  That being his tendency to peek into the backfield and read the quarterback at the expense of solid coverage on his assignment.  It is something that can be coached up and will be a point of emphasis this coming season.  Credited with dropping four INT's.   At season’s end Rollins was arguably outplaying Randall.  Statistically ranked as the Packers second best cornerback and #20 overall by Pro FootballFocus.

Grade:  B-

Player’s contributions in the playoffs: Started vs. Washington in place of Sam Shields but was knocked from the game with an injury.  He played vs. Arizona but did not record any statistics.

Grade:  C-

Intangibles/Miscellaneous: Rollins is a physical presense on the playing field and not afraid of contact. Very high ceiling - young and athletic and in time Rollins should be able to compete for a starting corner back position.

Grade:  B

Overall Grade:  B-

My favorite pick from the draft last year. I saw him for the first time at the Senior Bowl and was so impressed with his potential. I said last year I thought he was the most intriguing player in the draft.

I love his upside. An offseason learning more of how to play CB will really help.

The part of his game that impressed me the most was his physical tackling. A wouldn't have thought a former basketball player would tackle and hit as hard as he does.

I'm looking forward to seeing him play next year to see how he develops in the offseason.

2nd best on the Packers and 20th overall? Wow. That's damn good for a guy with little CB experience coming into the pros. I wonder what the CBs snap counts were for the Pack.

Dix (1048 - 99.7%), Hayward (914 - 87%), Randall, 755, Shields (697), Burnett (683), Hyde (652), Rollins (323), Banjo (102) Goodson (72), Richardson (48) Gunter (8). Defensive snaps only - excludes special teams.

Thanks a lot.

That says a LOTTTTTTT about HHCD. Wow. Remember the year where Burnett played all but a handful of snaps on Defense in a season? Now it's HHCD's secondary. I actually like that.

Hyde might have to give up a lot of his snaps to Rollins sooner than later. Either Rollins or Burnett.

I like Banjo as a ST player and backup Safety. I wonder if they'll allow Gunter to play some Safety as well. He has the experience from Miami. That will be another way to get him on the field ( if injuries come around)

I agree, Drealyn, with your points. Yes, it means that Dix is young, healthy, and pretty good. I agree that Banjo quietly does many things pretty well. He had 200 more snaps on STs. I think the snap counts show several things. While Randall did displace Hayward at outside CB, Hayward did not take a seat because of it. Hayward moved to slot, displacing Hyde to some degree. I agree that Rollins likely will displace Hyde a bit, though frankly, I think I like Rollins better at outside CB (qualified because I need to see more snaps) and I think I like Randall better at slot CB. I do think Randall can play both outside and slot CB. I can envision a big Safety scheme using 3 safeties, with Gunter playing a hybrid who can play thirds or press cover a WR or possibly a TE. Gunters lack of snaps on STs makes me suspect that he cannot play outside CB unless he does it like Harris used to.

TT, who has been known to whiff on the high picks, did a good job this year with Demarius Rollins (or is it Quinten Randall?). Yes, I consider them together as one pick since they haven't been healthy enough to be on the field at the same time much of the time. It seems like when one is down with an injury, the other lights it up. Injuries are my only concern with both these guys

TT hasn't whiffed on a high pics outside of the front seven on defense. And even then he is the one who drafted CM3 and Raji.

His skill position picks have been very very good. I can't wait to see what Randall and Rollins turn into in a few years. Between HHCD, Shields, Burnett, Gunter and and these too, the future of the secondary is extremely bright in Green Bay.

Perry plays well when healthy. Just when has that been?

Never.

And Perry is NOT an OLB. Classic 43 DE. Unless GB throws insane money at him to stay, he'll go elsewhere. And to be honest, he probably should. Regarding Datone, man I don't know. He's flashed some, but he's not consistent. He does not have the strength to play 5 Tech DT on run downs, and he doesn't have the fluidity to play coverage at OLB on passing downs. He won't be tendered, and I'd bet he's gone to a 43 team after 2016 just like Perry will be this year. Both were miscast reaches by TT at the end of the 1st round IMO. We'd have been better off going another direction.

DT and OLB are pretty solid needs this offseason, as is OG and ILB.

The guy said he doesn't want to play OLB before the draft and TT picked him anyway.

Which is why I prefer keeping Perry over Neal. I know he has been hurt constantly, but he has more potential. Neal has been better recently but probably has peaked.

+ Sherrod who was terrible even before he got hurt. Terrible afterwards, too.

I don't know if Sherrod was terrible before he got hurt - we never really got to see him at OT. Just at OG - and he was always too tall and long for OG. A 6'7" dude with 34" arms absolutely will struggle with stouter DTs. So it wasn't a surprise that he sucked at OG during camp. We will never know what could have been.

But yes, he was awful regardless of position after he got hurt for sure.

I too was not happy they effed up a first round tackle's confidence by playing him at guard, and he was pretty much awful after that devastating injury… career was over before it started, really a shame. By the way, he was 6-5.

Actually, I just watched highlights of Davante as a rookie. He was really good. I think he had a really bad year and MM really screwed the pooch by not having a dedicated WRs coach. He'll get another chance and I'm excited to see it.

Brian Brohm and Pat Lee. Forgot about them. Yeah. They sucked.

Some of the experts on ESPN said Rodgers would be behind Brohm on the depth chart at QB.

You watched a players' highlights and think he is good? Bearmeat, that is what highlights are supposed to do, though at least he had some highlights. His deficiencies were apparent in both his rookie and 2nd years. He runs lousy routes, is easily jammed, is not sudden out of his breaks, and can only beat the other team's 3rd or better yet, 4th CB.

...which is why he needs coaching. He didn't get that this year. ALL of the WRs sucked this year. All of them. And they've been strong for years before this - hence why I think it's going to be an exciting year for WRs next year.

Adams was not a lousy route runner his rookie year. You're still caught up in this season.

No doubt he had a bad 2015 season. Hell, which Packers WR didn't? I'm willing to bet he bounces back next season.

We just disagree, Drealyn, which is okay. I have been writing about Adams and his poor route running and lack of suddenness since his rookie year (and got hammered for it, too, which is why I know my criticism precedes this year). In fact, during preseason, I got hammered for writing just after the televised open practice last summer that Adams does everything well except for getting open. The play was the famous one-handed catch Adams made. I noted that while it was a great catch, he was not open - as usual. Got hammered (actually, this was on Acmepackingcompany.com). I was surprised by the drops. I think things just snowballed for Adams this season - too much too soon. I think his hands will be fine. I never liked the pick - I was on the Moncrief and Martavis Bryant bandwagons - but kept writing that one should never question a WR taken by TT in the 2nd round.

I sincerely hope that proper coaching can help Adams, because he does a lot of things well.

Lol, of course it's ok to disagree. I won't get emotional like some of the others.

No debate from me on his 2nd year. We all can agree on that. I just want to talk about his rookie season.

His rookie season looked totally opposite from this season. I also believe the hype began to build before camp because of the flashes he showed throughout his rookie season and the "2nd year jump" praise MM tags players with.

I remember him moving like Greg Jennings at times. His slant routes plus that little hop hesitation he does before taking off one way got him open à lot. You (not you in particular) can't praise one player for the indecisiveness and criticize another for the same thing. Cobb does the same thing.

You mentioned Adams does a lot of things well. What does he do well from your point of view?

Surprised by his drops this year. I read that he had some concentration drops in college. In his rookie year, I saw a player who plucked the ball out of the air with his hands, who had good body control allowing him to adjust easily while the ball was in the air. I saw elusiveness after the catch and some vision while running with the ball and who went immediately from securing the ball to running with it. Obviously I saw a taller WR who could leap. I thought I saw a WR who should be able to work the sideline, and box out the defender. I saw decent burst and enough speed. Very fluid athlete.

"Adams has a decent stance that will have a small amount of bounce as he comes off of the ball. What makes it more unusual is that he will fire off of the ball and attack routes but often uses a hesitation move which basically has him not move at all off of the snap and wait to make his move. The move has been effective at times, but it is something he is going to want to all but eliminate at the NFL. This raises a slight concern with how well he can get off of the line in the pros, but with time and coaching, he should be fine." Withthefirstpick.com

I thought Adams sometimes did not come back enough for passes, and who sometimes stopped his routes once his primary move proved ineffective (that is in a couple of scouting reports, too).

I think Adams' drops and poor yards after the catch were aberrations. If it hasn't gotten too much into his head, I think the drops will disappear, and likely his YAC will drastically improve when his drops rate improves.

Rollins will be Casey Hayward x5. Can he return punts? Those point guard moves would be great back there.

I like Rollins. He should develop into a solid starting DB. I am a little concerned about his tendency to go to the ground when attempting to tackle RBs but otherwise he plays very smoothly. Hopefully with another full camp and some coaching up his tackling will improve. Agree with his B- grade. Thanks, Since '61

I really like Rollins, and I'm excited about his potential, but I think part of the reason he seemed to be out-playing Randall was because Randall was covering the #1 receiver while Shields was out, and that included some really good WRs.
