Practice Round-Up, Day 11, August 12, 2018

·         DNP: Perry (ankle/PUP); Trevor Davis (hamstring); RB Devante Mays (hamstring); and S Jermaine Whitehead (back). Wilde  Graham, Aaron Jones and Bakh returned to practice

·         Mike McCarthy said a big regret was not elevating Gilbert to the active roster sooner.  Huber

·         Reggie Gilbert getting some first-team reps opposite Clay Matthews at  OLB today. Had been Kyler Fackrell.  93 being ahead of 51 is the biggest development at practice today. Wilde

·         Mike McCarthy said today QB's Tim Boyle, and DeShone Kizer "both have a long ways to go" when it comes to footwork, etc. "They're from another family."  Clemens

·         McCarthy says he liked the sideline-to-sideline aggressiveness of rookie ILB Oren Burks. However, he says Burks needs to get off blocks quicker.  Cohen

·         McCarthy says "mental errors were off the charts" on defense vs. Titans. Wood

·         Dillon Day was outstanding at center [during the preseason game]. Passed off stunts. Was able to get a few reaches on the 0. Even played guard. Well done  Eye in the Sky, retweeted  by Kruse

·         position coach Brian Angelichio is pleased with Graham’s blocking.  Wood

Actual Plays

·         Marcus Porter with an important breakup as M. Lewis was open behind him for a big gain. Porter’s had a nice day.  Herman

·         TE Kyle Lewis makes his biggest play of camp, catching deep pass in the seam from Kizer.  Hodkiewicz

·         Oren Burks with a poor rep as he lets Bouagnon get a big gain on a checkdown. Byrd with a really nice tough catch vs J Jones. Herman

·         Tim Boyle to Jake Kumerow despite a DPI on Rollins or Goodson, then Kizer to Adams behind Hawkins.  Wilde  Cohen called Kumerow’s catch a spectacular one-handed catch.

·         Kizer poor recognition as he misses 81 streaking over the middle wide open. Took too long but eventually completed the pass.  Ryan Smith has like 5-6 catches in team today. All very short for minimal gains.  Josh Jones with tight coverage and a PBU.  Hawkins great pbu on Cobb.  Herman

·         Aaron Rodgers finds Lance Kendricks on a free play deep downfield.  Hodkiewicz

·         MVS with a less than inspiring option route, no separation vs a LB. Low snap from Linsley but another 1 handed catch in the flat. This time by Ty. Allison with a 1 handed catch in the flat. He’s caught absolutely everything so far this offseason.  Herman

·         Yancey with a clean drop wide open over the middle from Rodgers. Has to catch that. And Greer Martini continues to impress. This time with a diving PBU.  Herman

·         EQ with a nice catch on a slant but Raven Greene would have crushed him had it been live tackling.

·         Kizer continues to struggle. This time missing badly on an intermediate out route.  Herman

OL/DL:

·         Right tackle Bryan Bulaga is taking a few team reps. I believe this is the first time he’s done that since tearing his ACL.  Cohen

·         Spriggs contains Gilbert this time.  Now Spriggs owns and pancakes Biegel. Lowry blows by Amichia for a sack.  James Looney is starting to show up. Fires through the o-line in team drills.  Herman

·         Very next play Looney gets through again.  Now Fackrell with an appearance in the backfield. Herman

·         Kyle Murphy at LT and Adam Pankey at LG to start out first team drill. Byron Bell at RT.  Silverstein

·         Akeem Judd with an impressive blitz pickup. Making the most of his abbreviated time in camp. Akeem Judd continues to look extremely shifty and just had a really nice run with great vision and agility in team. Herman

·         Gilbert good rush vs Murphy.  Williams expert blitz pickup vs Pipkins.  Ripper drops a pass on a checkdown from 12. Greer Martini with a fantastic read on a fake reverse screen pass. There immediately to meet the RB. Now Oren Burks with a great stop on an outside run. Adams beats Waters easy on a slant.  Herman

Special Teams:

Six punts: 40, 4.06; 46, 4.59; 48, 4.60; 41, 4.36; 49, 4.58; 38, 4.80.  Wood

Six punts: 40, 4.06; 46, 4.64; 47, 4.61; 40, 4.40; 49, 4.70; 38, 4.79.  Cohen

Jaire Alexander muffed a punt in the first drill. J’Mon Moore muffed a punt in the second drill. Cohen

After re-watching film of the game, I have some observations:

1. MVS and St. Brown look terrifying. Once they learn the game, look out. Fantastic draft picks. Pure Gute-gems. Watching them against backup DB's was like watching Shaq dunk on Mugsy Bogues.

2. Tennessee's Fluellen is a much, much better running back than anyone who was wearing Green and Gold.

3. Fackrell will be cut.

4. Donnerson looks like someone took a chiseled granite statue of Achilles...and improved it. Plus, he seems shot out of a cannon. Another Gute-gem.

5. With better throws from some nervous QB's, Kumerow would have lit up the scoreboard. The similarities between his game and Adams's (sneaky speed, excellent foot-and-hand work off the line, big strength, hands) is obvious, though he's 3 inches taller.

6. Despite the aforementioned nerves, we have 3 very good backup QB's.

7. Spriggs looked much better than Bell, though admittedly against lesser competition.

8. Oren Burks, as McCarthy said, should get off blocks a bit quicker...but man, what a 3rd round pick. Sorry, Jake Ryan, you will not be missed.

9. Ha Ha is ready to put last year behind him and play for a contract.

10. Our backup TE's are inconsequential. Keep 2 TE's on the 53, with Tonyan on the Practice Squad for depth. Save a roster spot for WR.

11. Gilbert is ready. Biegel is getting there.

12. Forget Dom Capers. After seeing the results from Gute's first draft (while adding a 1st next year), it's clear the most overdue firing was Ted Thompson.

I agree with this except for:
2) Fluellen, and that's because I didn't watch him;
11) Gilbert is ready. Biegel not there, not real close.

Nice point on Donnerson. GB likes him on inside blitzes.
Looney just keeps doing good things. 4-0 in 1 on 1s (including 2-0 against Lucas Patrick), all positive tweets. I'd love to see him against #1s and #2s. Tough cut? I kept Looney on my too early 53 prediction.

2 TE translates for me as Graham and Lewis. Cutting Kendricks saves $1.1M (figuring in that some rookie will make the team in his stead).

I am looking hard at Bell as well.

I didn't get the large signing bonus for Bell when they signed him. After seeing him in preseason seems like GB really overplayed for a poor performer. Hoping he can improve on his performance in the rest of preseason. At this point I don't expect him to improve since he's already a veteran but you never know.

Agree on Looney, fair point on Biegel, but watch the tape on Fluellen.

While we started a competent back who couldn't even attempt to bounce outside (nice TD catch, though), Fluellen showed burst and vision. It was no contest.

Perry still out!! What a joke. Should have never signed him to a big contract. Not dependable, soft, wont make half the season. A bust!!

I understand the frustration, but just so you know- he didn't suffer a sports injury, he's recovering from an elective ankle surgery. Certainly not soft, but I'll give you his injury history has made him a guy we can't depend on.

MM still loves no show Hundley. Either hes looking to build him up for a trade, or he is just plain stupid. Probably the latter.

Or, Hundley has progressed with his footwork, and looked good against the Titans.

But I agree that we'd love to get a pick for him, given our deep QB group.

I'm going to be watching Looney vs. Pit he showed up with that strip sack vs the Titans. Thought he would be a project PS squad type of player but would love to see him be able to contribute right away.

"Mike McCarthy said a big regret was not elevating Gilbert to the active roster sooner. "

How long have I been saying this? What is wrong with these guys sometimes..He always smoked the eye test.

No wonder it was 4 years too late for Capers firing.... This is their job and these mistakes cost games..

Green Bay will need three TEs, outside Graham and Lewis probably one more maybe Byrd, but he didn't do much in Titan's game. If Mays doesn't get back into TC, he will have a major problem getting by Judd. He's patience and shifty, not as much as Jones, but enough to take the place of Mays. Donnerson looked good to me against the Titans, just need to see him more against better players. The back-up OTs are a concern to me right now. Murphy and Spriggs haven't made that jump, or could be still not 100% from last year's injuries.

Do you think Lance Kendericks will be our 3rd TE?

Belichick probably regretting letting Kumerow go.

What do they do with Kizer if Hundley’s the clear #2? Can’t keep 3 QB’s, can they?

Need many corners. These guys are always hurt.

Too many receivers now. Must keep Kumerow, EQ, MVS. Don’t know if Moore would make it to PS.

I think they need several OLB’s, since Perry and Clay will be in and out of lineup. Plus, might need Mathews inside.

Not sure if you guys got the vikes game or not. If not, their third qb who they stole off Denver's practice squad looked better than our three backups and I thought Boyle looked good . Running backs looked fast and quick also.
Pretty impressive in some areas. Not so in others. First team d pretty much sat it out. Cousins one set.
Overall they looked talented throughout. Last, the top 8 stars are all signed through 2020 so they will have some continuity.
Thought I would share in return for your inputs on the pack doings.
Going to be a tough competitive season.
