Post-Draft Packers Position Analysis: Edge Rushers

Join us for a look at where the edge rushing unit sits after the 2020 NFL Draft.

In case this is your first piece in the series, Cheesehead TV is currently doing a position group assessment for the roster to break down where each unit stands heading into the offseason program and training camp. Naturally, because Za’Darius Smith is involved, I chose edge rushers. And let’s be honest here, the edge unit is absolutely loaded in Green Bay. This is likely the easiest assessment to write. Let’s get to it!

We’ll get into each contributor in more detail, but right now there are three roster locks in Za’Darius, Preston Smith, and Rashan Gary. The fourth spot vacated by Kyler Fackrell in free agency remains up for grabs, and there’s plenty of talent to push for that last rotational spot. Not only did the Packers draft Jonathan Garvin in the seventh round, but Green Bay also has quite a few undrafted free agents and returning practice squad players competing for what’s likely only one final roster spot.

Za’Darius Smith (27)

I could (well, did) write a poem about Za’Darius Smith and the impact he’s made on this Packers defense. Not only from a talent perspective, which we’ll get to in just a second, but the way he’s become a locker room leader and captain for this team. It’s too early to compare his career arc to that of Reggie White or Charles Woodson, but Z is an early favorite for General Manager Brian Gutekunst’s most impactful free agent signing (despite it being so early in his tenure).

Now, onto the stats. There’s not much to say about Z that hasn’t already been said, so I’ll try to keep this brief. Za’Darius had a career-high 13.5 sacks during the regular season and a whopping 37 quarterback hits (tied for first in the NFL) in 2019. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Z also led the league in disruptions with 84 during the regular season.

Preston Smith (27)

Just like Za’Darius, Preston has come in and made an immediate difference for this Packers edge rushing unit. He also set a career-high in sack totals with 12, making Preston and Z the first duo in Packers history to tally 12-plus sacks in the same season. Perhaps what’s most impressive about Preston would be his third-down numbers, with seven of his 12 sacks coming on third down in 2019.

While Preston is the less outspoken member in the Super Smith Bros duo, he’s done just as much for the locker room, making his presence felt both on and off the field in Green Bay. And luckily, both Smith Bros are under contract in Green Bay through 2023.

Rashan Gary (22)

Gary’s coming into an important second year for the Packers. While he only played 24% of snaps on defense in 2019, with Kyler Fackrell’s departure, that number should increase significantly. For reference, Fackrell played 40% of defensive snaps for Green Bay in his final season. Gary quietly tallied two sacks of his own this past season (to Fackrell’s one sack) and has put a lot of promise on film.

As a first-round draft pick, there’s a lot riding on Gary’s 2020 season in regards to his development, but with both Smiths taking 84% of snaps on defense, he’s still a player that will need to work his way into the rotation in specific packages. Still, Gary is a promising young talent on defense and has the third edge rushing spot locked in for 2020. Now let’s talk about the guys behind him battling for spot number four.

Jonathan Garvin (20)

There’s a lot to like about Jonathan Garvin, Green Bay’s second seventh round draft pick. Perhaps what’s most intriguing about him is his age. At only 20 years old, he certainly fits the mold of a Gutekunst pick - that mold being an ascending, young player with a great relative athletic score (8.99). Per Pro Football Focus, Garvin tied for team lead at Miami in total pressures during the 2019 season with 46. He also has a pass rush grade of 88.2, which was second highest among all ACC defenders with a minimum of 200 snaps.

Garvin is an intriguing blend of length and agility, which is apparent by his nickname “Spider.” He was expected to be drafted higher than the seventh round, so there’s a lot of potential there for Garvin. But as far as potential is concerned, here’s my favorite quote from him:

“As far as untapped potential, yeah, there's a mass of it. I haven't hit my prime yet," Garvin said. "I have years to go to hit my prime. By the time the contract is done, I still won't be in my prime and I'll still keep on growing and developing."

That sure sounds like a guy that’s ready to blow the doors off of Lambeau and get to work.

Tim Williams (26)

Before the Packers drafted Garvin, Tim Williams was my choice for the fourth roster spot at edge. That’s not to say he still can’t be the guy and beat out Garvin, but initially, he was my fourth rusher. Williams was drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens, and since then, he’s never really been able to live up to his draft stock.

In his two and a half seasons with Baltimore, Williams played in 19 games with two sacks, 18 total tackles, and five quarterback hits. He was signed by Green Bay off waivers in October of 2019, played in one game for the Packers (without posting any stats), and was added to the practice squad after being released from the active roster.

At Alabama, Williams put together 57 total tackles with 30 for a loss and 20 sacks, with three passes defensed, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. The upside is there in his game, and his familiarity playing with Z in Baltimore might help him acclimate to the defense, but he’s still got a long way to go to claim the fourth edge spot.

Randy Ramsey (24)

Randy “Rambo” Ramsey is another name to keep an eye on as training camp approaches. He had a fantastic preseason in 2019 and likely just missed the roster in favor of the veteran Kyler Fackrell. Luckily, the Packers were able to stash him on the practice squad after cut-down day.

Ramsey was a versatile addition to the Arkansas defense during his time there, listed as playing linebacker, defensive end, and along the defensive line. His college numbers are impressive as he finished with 106 total tackles with 19.5 for a loss, 8.5 sacks, two passes defensed, two fumble recoveries, and five forced fumbles. Given his strong 2019 showing and his familiarity on the practice squad, Ramsey could make a strong push for that last edge position.

Greg Roberts (24)

Roberts signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in May of 2019, but required offseason core surgery and was added to the physically unable to perform list for all of training camp and the preseason. He remained on the PUP list almost all season and began practicing with the team in December.

In a crowded room after having limited practice snaps last season, Roberts is going to have a lot to prove going into this year’s training camp. At Baylor, Roberts had 81 total tackles with 15.5 for a loss and three sacks with nine passes defensed and one forced fumble. If you look at his highlights, he’s also the player that got ejected from a game for fighting with now Bears running back David Montgomery.

Tipa Galeai (23)

Galeai is an undrafted free agent who recently signed with the Packers to compete for the final edge spot. He played two seasons at TCU before being dismissed from the program. He transferred to Utah State for his junior and senior seasons (which means yes, he knows Jordan Love). At Utah State, Galeai tallied 119 total tackles with 22.5 for a loss and 15 sacks. He also snagged two interceptions (returning one for a touchdown) with three passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. In 2018, Galeai led the Mountain West Conference in sacks with 10.

Delontae Scott (23)

Scott is the second undrafted free agent that signed with the Packers this past week. He played his entire collegiate career at SMU and recorded 97 total tackles with 35 for a loss and 17 sacks, including two passes defensed and two forced fumbles. The SMU defense led the nation in sacks in 2019, with Scott contributing 10 to the team’s total.

A fun note: former Packers safety Chris Banjo was also an undrafted free agent out of SMU. Could Scott be the next?

Summary

The edge rushing unit improved dramatically in 2019 after being an area of weakness in 2018. As of right now, and given the team’s recent history, it feels like there will be six players battling for one final roster spot behind Za’Darius, Preston, and Gary. It’s possible though that Green Bay could opt to keep only three inside linebackers and five outside edge rushers given the versatility a lot of the linebackers possess, and the way that defensive coordinator Mike Pettine likes to utilize a safety in the box. Keep an eye on this position heading into training camp, as there’s going to be a lot of competition for what likely will end up being only one or two roster spots. Today, Garvin, Williams, and Ramsey would be my early favorites for the last slot(s).

"And let’s be honest here, the edge unit is absolutely loaded in Green Bay"

Indeed. Now instead of relying on a bunch of UDFAs to start the Packers have one the of the best groups of edge in the league.

Let's just hope Pettine gets his es aech eye tee together so they don't get 'counter treyed' to death in the run game anymore.

Really good pass rushing group that needs to improve versus the run. Gary could help with that.

IMO and the stats I've seen our edge guys are good against the run. So much better than Clay. Z had a bad game against SF and it showed in the run stats. He was not on top of his assignments and was trying to do too much. Blake sucked in that game as well. Savage showed his inexperience along with Tramon and Kings poor play against the run. Just getting a run stuffing DL is not the answer. That said I would like to see one added to the roster as it will help.
Z stated after the game how he was disappointed in his play so hopefully that won't happen again. Now add a potentially much better ILB possibly 2 of them and that will help against the run.
Gary is a good run defender and an upgrade over Fackeral. Gary's issue is dropping in coverage. That's what kept KF ahead of him.

This starts with the Smith Brothers. They were absolutely amazing last year!

Gary was a rookie coming in, learning a new position behind 2 players that made immediate impacts. Gary didn't have to make a big impact which is what you want from your rookies. That being said Gary was pretty good when he was on the field. He just didn't make it there much.
This year he should see a lot more playing time. And our defense could be much better for it.

After Gary its nothing but questions.

Garvin is an intriguing 7th round pick. He has a lot of skills. One of the knocks on him that I saw is that he doesn't always give full effort. If that is true is there a better person in the league to pair him with then Za'Darius? Even Preston and Gary can help him in that area.

I think there are enough skilled players competing for the 4th spot. While they are mostly UDFA's they should be able to find someone there to fill that role. If not they can always find a guy who gets cut later.

Fackrell played in coverage last year. I assume Preston Smith would be preferable to Gary as prime candidate to play more coverage out of those returning to the active roster.

Will Gary play the role P Smith did last year or will overall usage change as a result of having the three available? I think it possible that it will, with the fourth OLB dropping more into coverage in Fackrell’s role. Be interesting.

If we have hound agile guys that can handle coverage, are they candidates to bleed into the ILB type role, strengthening depth and size options?

Gary is the best run defender of our OLB's so either Preston Smith or #4 OLB will need to be the coverage guy. I think P. Smith can do the job, but it would be nice to have one more with that ability.

With all the hybrid types and both ILB I could see a formation with only Clarke as the only DL, and he's the one that drops in coverage....

Yeah, I would downvoted have me too. There is a bit too much Dom Capers in Pettine for me at times...

GB went from rags to riches in just 2 years. Wonder if any of these roster bubble guys can play ILB?

Tim Williams would be my bet as a guy who can be a run-down ILB.

Guam and Dzehren pretty much said what I was thinking....the Edge guys need/must learn to hold the edge on running plays. The Smiths and others were being pushed off their spot or overran the play and the 49ers just ran inside them. Now as pass rushers...they will/could be deadly.
The second part is depth. It's pretty good and wonder if Pettine and MLF are looking at some of these guys as ILBs? I guess we will find out soon enough. I just find it odd that the draft didn't hit on a DE or ILB which would help the run defense unless they had a plan in place (or people on the roster) who they thought would make a difference.

They picked Martin at ILB. We did claim Gerald Willis off waivers a day or two before the draft (not official yet). He is a highly graded DE in need of polishing prospect from last year held back by off field issues that he may or may not have left behind.

I firmly believe if Gary is on the field more he can produce. I also believe he could have helped more in the NFCCG on those sweeps and out side runs, setting the edge. I think Pettine moves him and Z Smith all over the defensive front this year.

The more that Gary is on the field (given he and Z will be playing DE spots more), the more depth they'll need at OLB. So maybe two of these guys above make the team rather than the one Fackrell replacement.

For a million different reasons the worlds fight with Covid-19 is terrible. From a football standpoint it just SUCKS!

Putting the 2020 draft aside for a moment, Gute has had 2 other draft classes so far in his time as Packers GM. IMO this offseason was going to be the most important in years for the Packers. Williams, Garvin, and especially Gary were the ones I really wanted to watch from this group. Some thought Garvin could have been draft earlier like in the 3rd or 4th round. Tim Williams was a kid I liked coming out. Granted he's struggled but the Packers have an excellent OLB coach. If anyone can help Williams it's Mike Smith.

Gary will be much better. How much better will depend on what king of camp if any he has before the regular season...IF there is even a regular season. With more snaps he'll produce. How much more will depend on the lead-up to the regular season. On athletic talent alone he'll get his share of sacks, BUT I'm really excited to watch him play the run as well along the D-Line and edge.

Can't wait to watch the bust-birds eat their words about Gary. It's coming too.

Maggie nice article. The Smiths were animals last year. But I still believe you need better up front. The smiths did a great job, don't get me wrong. But KC stopped the 49ers. We didn't! The Talent behind the Smiths shouldn't be the only concern. So- what does KC have that we don't? While edge players can rush. Our defense was really bad against the run. And my concern is the Smiths will slow -down. If we went the KC way, I'd be much happier. It takes 4 up front to stop the run. And if pettine doesn't change his defense to stop the run. Were going to lose. The 3-4-4 is dying. Sure his defense is great against the pass. But it's still a bend, don't break. Everybody wants to run now. I'd rather see the 4-3-4. The Trench and Faster LBs are the only way up. This defense must change with the NFL! It won't if Edge is the packers only solution.

The League is not trending run. The league is designed to make passing the best way to advance the ball. A few teams are doing what you said to take advantage of the Defenses required to focus on pass.

It's the reason we see all the shock and awe about Gute not going after WR but RB/TE/IOL.

MLF is ahead of the curve with the Shanahan system that is hot right now. It's probably the #1 reason he was hired.
The days of the immovable object at NT being a critical piece are over. Just look at the Draft, Fa and dollars expended.
It's why Kenny Clark is an elite player. He can play the nose and rush the passer at high levels.
I'd like to see them pick up Snacks but why hasn't anyone else? He is still a very effective NT gobbling up OL.
As far as mving to a 4 man front - maybe it is better we can debate that but the Packers have players to run the 3-4. It would be puzzling to have a great pass rush and be 8th in the League in points allowed and then change everything to fix a weakness that is there.

It's like throwing out the baby with the bath water.
The Packers have no interest in being the league #1 rush defense but giving up more points.
Yes SF was an utter embarrassment, yes it will need to be rectified if you are going to beat one of the top teams in your way to the SB. No you shouldn't retool your complete defense over one issue in a couple of games.

It's nice to read good news for a change, even if it's only regarding our edge defenders. Now that we have size and athleticism, let's add some gap discipline and we'll be set.

That could be true. What happens when the Packers have or any team has a lead late or a large lead early? Teams are forced to pass. If it was so easy for everyone to run all over the Packers lucky or not how the heck did the win 14 games to 4 losses?

Great review, Maggie! I think Garvin and Ramsey are the ones who will wind up winning positions. They are both great talents with unique qualities that set them apart, and, they both have SO MUCH potential in their development. I love the Gary pick more and more, as, again, this was a pick for the future. I look at Garvin and the Ramsey UDFA signing last year as much the same. Have a feeling they will do what they can to keep both players secured in GB - even at the cost of a 53 man roster adjustment.

The talent level of this group is immense, and a testament to the fine job Gutes and his personnel staff are doing to improve the Packers now and for the future.

Living here in south Florida the Miami hurricane fans thought Garvin dogged it the entire year and really under performed. Hopefully that trait doesn’t follow him to the nfl.
