Planting for a Purpose

Before we start the football debates for the 2019 season I wanted to highlight one of the many charitable causes the Packers support within the community.  Just for the purposes of full disclosure, I do not live in Green Bay so I was blown away when I read about Planting for a Purpose.

As of September 5, 2018, 11.8% of Americans were food insecure which means they do not know where their next meal is coming from.  Think about that for a second, over 10% of Americans are in danger of not eating on a particular day.  To me, that is a mind-boggling statistic in a country where we are afforded so many luxuries.

As a journalist and supporter of the Green Bay Packers, it gives me great joy to see the franchise is doing their part to eliminate hunger in the community. Since 1996, Brown County has provided garden space and given the community an opportunity to grow produce and donate parts of their harvest to people in the community who are food insufficient.

The Packers have once again joined the Brown County Extension and are helping to further the mission to encourage members of the community to plant gardens of produce to donate to food shelters in the community.  In 2018, the Brown County Extension project ended up donating 15,000 pounds of produce and hopes to donate more this year.

We need more people to step up to the challenge like Jefferson Elementary's 5th-grade class who planted a garden of their own for the food insufficient in Green Bay.

My hope is that the Brown County Extension is able to donate 20,000 pounds of produce to homeless shelters this year.  I hope that if you are reading this and have thought about growing produce in past years, you make the decision this year to grow a produce garden and support this amazing cause and continue the fight to end hunger.

I agree. Take care of American citizens in need, particularly veterans living in the streets. Sorry, but it's ridiculous spending millions caring for illegals when so many of our own citizens are hungry.

The truth that all human life is worth our empathy and compassion? Nothing irritating about that at all.

Wow. Super mischaracterization of what John Galt stated Aaron. Where did he say anything about not having compassion for those in need??? He was merely supporting dblbogey’s point that we need to take care of those who are here legally before taking on everyone else on the planet who wants to jump the fence to get a free ride here. He is also 1,000% correct that it is fascist liberal Democrats who in reality could give a rat’s ass about helping anyone “in need” —-they want wide open borders so they can promise the illegally-entered “newcomers” whatever they want for one reason and one reason only— to secure their votes (yes illegals vote) and thus maintain their power in office. If Liberals/ Democrats are so knowledgeable about how to help the poor, how come every major city in the country, which have been run by Democrats almost exclusively for decades, is, and has been in the toilet economically for decades??? (See Detroit and New York for references). I’m from NY like you, and De Blasio is the biggest running joke in the state, next to AOC, who single-handedly blew up the Amazon deal that would have created thousands of jobs (even Cuomo pushed for it) and subsequently helped to feed more who are struggling for their next meal. Did you happen to vote for either of those two by the way Aaron?? Yet you make a ridiculous attack on Mr. Galt. Mr. Galt, thank you for your service. God Bless you for putting your life on the line for me and millions of others.

Thanks for the well-written piece on a complex issue, David. Food insecurity impacts someone you know, no doubt, and it's quite often not obvious. Check the number of children receiving free and reduced school lunches in your local school district. I'll bet you'll be surprised by the high percentage of those in need.

I volunteer with our local food pantry, and community kitchen. There is most likely an entity like that in your community. I encourage you to see how you can help.

And Meals on wheels for seniors. This funding has also been reduced in the recent administrations' budgets. E Pluribus Unum.

I have helped with food pantries and kitchens for decades. The vast majority of the people who are hungry are also in need of a job. I have noted that those who are in need is getting smaller as the economy grows. With employment there is the added benefit of more self respect. Yet there will always need to be a safety net and I am glad organizations like the Packers are working to help provide that.

I'll just say that I think this is a great idea. Garden-raised produce is much, much better and healthier than junk food.

Just so you know, fascists hate liberal democrats, they are not one and the same. Fascism IS corparate ownership of government. And before you go there, Stalin executed 10's of thousand's liberal democrats in the great purge, because liberal democrats are not communists either.
