Panic Permeates Throughout Packers Performance

Green Bay did everything they could to shoot themselves in the foot - and succeeded.

Packers players and coaches simply panicked last night. On multiple occasions. They continually shot themselves in the foot and let a very below average Tom Brady performance be enough to beat them.

Overall Play-calling Panic: 16 rush attempts versus 48 pass attempts. Seems like anytime the Packers have lost, we've heard LaFleur lament not running the ball enough. The Packers did a great job last week with run/pass balance against the league's #1 defense with great results. Sure, some of the blame likely falls on Rodgers as he has options on just about every play, but LaFleur runs the show and has to bear the burden of responsibility.

Specific Play-calling Panics:
6 goal to go plays, six passes. Rodgers under heavy pressure in those situations forcing throws to the end zone. On at least one occasion, he should have kept the ball and headed for the pylon.

Six passing plays, after the Jaire INTs, not a single run.

Coaching Decision Panics:

Going for two in the third quarter when it didn't make sense.

Kicking a field goal in a goal-to-go situation with just over two minutes left in the game and down by eight. Tampa was going to get the ball back with two minutes left whether you scored a touchdown, failed to score or kicked a field goal. You're going to have to get a stop either way. If you don't score the touchdown, you at least have Tampa pinned near their own goal line. This isn't why they lost the game, but it reeks of panic. - what happened to "All Gas No F'ing Brakes?"

Mike Pettine, your defensive call with 8 seconds left in the half and the Bucs on the 40 yard line is man coverage with a single-high safety? You're more worried about the Brady throwing a quick out to possibly get into field goal range than protecting against a deep shot touchdown? That is panic under pressure of the moment. I rarely call for a coach's firing, but this is justifiable cause to me. This is where the game was lost.

Twice the Packers' defense got caught with 12 men on the field as they found themselves with the wrong personnel in the game and tried to make last second changes.

And the final nail in the coffin. Kevin King caps off a great night when once again he is beat by a wide receiver, but this time unfortunately is close enough to grab a jersey and draw a penalty on a pass that was never going to be completed. Too bad he wasn't beat by five yards on this one so he couldn't grab the receiver's shirt. Say all you want about the fairness of the call after everything that was let go to that point, but if King doesn't panic, the Packers get the ball back with plenty of time to mount a possible game-winning scoring drive.

I won't include Amos because he totally blew the TD to Brate. Otherwise, the others were pretty flawless and the game's bright spots.

In all fairness, the Bucs were dam well prepared from the previous game knowing who the weak links were on pass d and Brady knew who they were and their numbers and the bucs executed their plan well. Run twice to soften the d then look for the easy pass and move the ball downfield.
Its the Vikings offensive scheme at its best.
Hell if they would have just passed passed passed, they could have won by 35 points like the last time.

The score was 21 TB GB 10 at the start of the 3rd, thanks to the King fail. When he fumbled after the catch, run, get blasted, Brady put the ball into the endzone with ease and nets a 28-10 score. I am referring to the game on Sunday not last October.

I like the way you worded that. We didn’t wilt after the fumble and subsequent score, we rallied.

“Most football games are not won, they are lost.”. Over and over again that proves true. We made two big mistakes that cost us the game.... the bomb to end the first half, and the fumble/TD to start the second...were a 14-0 bad stretch.

The bomb...King didn’t stop it, but where was his help? Why did we choose to prevent the FG instead of the TD? We could have lined up three deep safeties. So that’s one big mistake. The fumble.....look, Jones rarely fumbles and he coughed it up twice. I admire the effort, but I have to wonder if he just was not physically able to play. It was an excellent hit, but I’ve seen Jones take hard hits and hang on before, so......

That’s how close we came to the Super Bowl.

True stuff....it would be interesting to see Rodgers leave this organization. See what these coaches and management are made of without their star player. I doubt I will see them back in this position again for awhile anyway. Some teams go all in, some managements are far too practical for that nonsense...why do that when you can draft an unknown QB who won't play for a few years...well, trade Rodgers and lets see how that works out...

It would be interesting to see what our star player looks like without Aaron Jones and great protection. Oh, wait a minute, we just saw that.

45 passes against this Tampa defense, behind a makeshift line, is a recipe for getting your quarterback hurried, hit and pressured. And that’s what happened.

We all agree that King, Pettine, Redmond, and too many others ie. dropped TD pass, dropped 2 point conversion caused the loss of the game. And the way Rodgers was playing, there was no guarantee that if the Packers scored the TD (that is, if he ran it into the end zone on third down and an empty corner in the end zone) that we would have scored the TD. But MLF screwed up. For that matter, even if King did not get the PI call does not guarantee that Rodgers would have gotten the TD. My point is that coaches and players earned the ridicule they are receiving but Rodgers should be getting so much more blame than he is receiving. He passes were off, he missed receivers, he tried to go to Adams to much with other receivers open, he missed the opportunity on third and goal, had two turnovers from Brady and went 3 and out. Look, we all love Rodgers but let's face it, he cannot win the big ones (other than the one SB). Except for this year, the previous recent years he gave us were lousy years with great receivers. Always letting the play clock go down to zero, going for the long one instead of the first down, etc. This year he is the MVP and one of the best ever to play the game. But he proved he is not the GOAT. If GB somehow got to the SB, Mahomes would carve the Packers defense like turkeys. Let Rodgers go to SF and let's get lots of low drafts and free up lots of cap space and see if Love can be the next great QB for GB.

By and large yes on these observations/indictments. However by the time of the two JA interceptions TB had two substitute safeties in the game. Throwing the ball in that situation could be argued as going after a clear weakness. That is what a game plan is supposed to do (see TB picking on Kevin King) and how a game plan is supposed to adapt. So a case could be made for those throws.
Similarly it seemed to me that when GB went to the quick, short throws around the 2nd quarter they started to move the ball ok. I don't know if that was meant to stretch the defense along the LOS or not, but if so then the case could be made that those were throws to set up the run game rather than vice versa. But hey none of that, in the end, worked so it looks like the game plan was the right way to go.

You could try to pick on their safeties if you have the time to make those throws. Rodgers was under constant pressure - a more balanced approach might have slowed down the Tampa Bay rush. A screen pass or two might have been a good choice also.

I was waiting for one, especially when Bucs were successful with lumbering Gronk. However, we ran the ball a few times in the second half and hit a solid brick wall. Earlier in the game there were some open holes in the middle and I wished we had Jones to take advantage of them with his speed .I think by that time the O line was in retreat while Bucs D line was smelling victory. Also, thought we should have rolled and sprinted Rogers out a bit more.

Speaking of that Gronk play. Have we seen the Packers with a legitimate screen play this year? Not a WR bubble screen. I mean one where the QB pack pedals from the pressure and then dumps it off to a RB or TE with the OL set up to block. I thought going in to this game it might be useful given the pressure TB put on in game 6.

When you are down 28-10 in the 3rd quarter it is necessary to pass the ball in order to catch up, especially when you have AR at the helm. In addition, Jones had just been forced out with an injury. Despite those facts, running plays were included in the subsequent drives that produced two touchdowns and closed the gap to 28-23 with plenty of time to win the game.

And the closing of the gap to 28-23 is evidence that the players and coaches did not "panic". To the contrary, Coach LaFleur called the correct plays to engineer a resurgence, and AR executed as needed to score those two touchdowns. The defense produced the stops and turnovers needed to keep the game winnable.

The one point I agree with is the inexcusable defensive play call at the end of the half, which was eerily similar to what got the despicable Gregg Williams fired by the Jets.

I understand your frustration Jersey Al. And, as you should be aware, I am very complimentary of all CHTV owners and contributors, including you. However, I believe that characterizing the players and coaches as "panicking" is not only inaccurate, but insulting to those professionals who were undoubtedly trying their best to win. It is especially insulting to Coach LaFleur.

You are unfortunately, and apparently intentionally, playing to lowest common denominator of your readers by describing the effort as panic. I believe you to be better than that.

Claiming that I am "projecting" is a personal insult/attack. Issuing a demand that I stop doing so is a personal threat. I am certain that you have banned people for posting personal threats.

Again, my original comment was extremely complimentary of your overall work. You could have chosen to discuss, in a civilized and polite manner, the merits of the points I originally made regarding the coach's decisions and the players' performances. Instead, you chose to go the route of personal attacks/threats. I believe that your choice supports my original opinion.

This seems to be quite extreme. There are plenty of comments here and on other threads that have no down votes at all. I make it point to never down vote great commenters like Since'61, RC, marpag, Tgr, Oppy, and many others.

There are others that I am willing to down vote. When someone rants about players kneeling I am most likely going to down vote that person.

My comment below regarding how I should not have ascribed a motive to you was posted prior to my seeing this. I stand by that mea culpa. It is unfortunate that what began as mostly a disagreement regarding the word panic has degenerated to this level.

Obviously this discussion has progressed far beyond the point of being productive. I believe that it is inappropriate to ascribe the word "panic" to the Packers players and coaches. You disagree, as shown by the subject of your column. Our opinions are our own.

You stated that I could not know your motivation for choosing to use the description of panic. That is absolutely correct, and it was inappropriate for me to even hint of some perceived motive on your part.

Whatever happened with past commenters is best left in the past. However, to my knowledge there was no reason given for what happened to the commenter you referred to.

I honestly do not understand the extreme vitriol. I offered a sincere apology. I respectfully suggest that moving on is the best approach.

With regard to comments, I believe you will find the ones you quoted were in response to edp1959. Much like someone such as DenePhilips, edp is not a reasonable commenter. They not only post ludicrous insults of the players and coaches, but worse, they post white supremacist propaganda. Plenty of other commenters have responded harshly to them, and plenty of commenters have thanked me for calling out their bigotry, which I greatly appreciate.

I do not believe that CHTV endorses racism. In fact, I know that you personally Al, have responded with great zeal to admonish posters who displayed racism when i emailed the site about a couple of such incidents. In retrospect, emails are obviously the best way to address such issues in the future, instead of directly replying these people.

The airing of our grievances is not necessarily wasted time. It can, in fact, be cathartic. The most wasted time has probably been that of the readers in viewing this entire unfortunate exchange. Again, it would be nice to acknowledge that this is a situation that has spiraled way out of control and proceed from here with you writing and me commenting about the Packers. However, if you wish to proceed with a ban that is obviously your prerogative.

So here's the deal. You took something I said and accused me of personal attacks and making a threat. My comments were not even remotely in that vain. Anyone who reads what I wrote would agree with me. If you think I am going to take false accusations lightly, you don't know me. I detest such histrionics and dramatics.

Now you are classifying someone else's comments as white supremacist propaganda. Do you think your words carry any weight with me after what you just did to me? They don't.

You're right about one thing, I do have little tolerance for racism or any type of hate speech, regardless of who it's coming from. I have just as little tolerance for dramatic bullshit. You were banned from here once before - that means I have an itchy trigger finger.

If anything has spiraled out of control here, it's due to your own actions. I will give you another chance and accept your apology. In return I will expect you to stop denigrating people with your comments and vindictively downvoting everyone's comments. Is that a deal?

Yes! The truly worrying thing is we made the same errors as in the first Tampa game, just as we did last year with the 49ers.

As feared, Pettine came out with 3 man rushes and giving Brady all day as well.

Serious coaching failings, tactically and in preparation. Pettine makes both players and schemes worse, he needs to be gone with SM, but LaFleur has a serious weakness at this point that he either gets over or will be a perennial post season disappointment.

Plenty of blame to go around: Jones fumbling, Rodgers interception, Adams dropped TD pass, O-line unable to protect Rodgers, Rodgers taking too long in the pocket, Rodgers starring down his receivers, Rodgers not running for the end zone, Rodgers missing a wide open Lazard infront of him while forcing the ball to Adams and most of all, Rodgers going three and out TWICE after the defense forced turnovers. But sure, it's all Kevin Kings fault in the end. Sure he sucks, but this is an offensive team first and foremost. Defense was just as slightly above mediocre they've been all season. Offense on the other hand... Geez.

Rodgers was pressured harder yesterday than he’d been all season. Agree? I mean, his numbers are good but it just seemed to me he had to hurry and couldn’t take his time to do a proper dissection. IMO, if we want to be in the Championship game again next year we need a plan to give him the time he needs to do his job.

Because of the events around halftime, we had to throw. But we threw too many passes, especially if we can’t protect our guy.

Also, some of his interceptions he too was out of place and dropped back and got an interception only because the guy he wasnt covering let the ball go over his head. If the guy had caught the ball it too would have been a TD or ball on the one.
Not impressed with any of them. Slow, poor tacklers, cant move laterally and certainly cannot play man coverage. None of em

Not sure if Rodgers wasn’t behind a lot of those play calls. When facing adversity, the offense seems to revert back to pre-MLF days with 12 holding the ball too long looking for deep shots and trying too hard to force it to Adams. It certainly wasn’t the quick hit, misdirection offense we’ve seen all season.

You may be onto something, IrishCheesehead.
We can say that Rodgers had a good game, even an excellent game, but still ask if he focused too much on Davante, was too intent on longer passes, and was less than creative in his decisions.
He led us back marvelously, though, and made a lot of big plays.
Rodgers is great, but that doesn't mean he can't get better.
He didn't have the leisure of Brady in the pocket, but we can still ask if he may want to do some reevaluation for future improvement.
Even as we search for answers from yesterday's disappointment, it's good to take a deep breath and appreciate the overall greatness of Aaron Rodgers.
We want any criticism to be constructive, and kept in perspective.
So I'm pretty much with you, IrishCheesehead, perhaps completely so. Thumbs up.

Kind of hard when MVS was being mugged all game. Tampa put two on him when he was in. Green Bay started to move him in the slot second half, force Tampa to rotate coverage, opened up voids for the other WR. May not look like it, by MVS had a huge impact in the second half.

He might have been but there was at least one, probably more, case in the 3rd quarter where he "canned" the call and went with a run. It went nowhere. This is just to say that his change ups were not all about switching to a pass to Adams.
As for the quick hit offense it looked to me like after the Pack got some traction with quick throws in the 2nd quarter TB started to jam the receivers more. The plays just developed late too often I think.

Indeed Al. If I said I knew this was going to happen 2 -3 days ago I would have gotten 13 thumbs down. We were exposed again.
AR 12 folds on blitzes ( our tackles are/were not that good; where were the TE chips?) and is afraid to run out of them. Jones is gone...he refused the Packer's money. The weakest links are King , Sullivan and Redmond. I expect changes, but the Packers have too much "family pride". Gone are or better be gone are Pettine and Mangena(sic). The backend defense and specials sucked. ML did not act like the boss and it showed up. Getting 50 yards rushing is not going to win many games. Our 3rd down efficiency-ouch! That field goal issue, no onside kick try-ok, not calling time outs to slow momentum, or having 12 men on defense are just inexcusable at this level. Not letting a WR pass you ever … Must I go on?

As for the future the Packers have 10 picks, and the highly payed primidone's need to suck it up like TB12, take less money or restructure to build a "football team rather than family pride". Many new faces on this team are coming; just hope they get it right this time. AR12 did his best with what the FO gave him...it's just not enough to bring back a trophy! GPG

The big kick return by Tampa Bay after the Pack scored in the third was another brick pulled from the wall.
Packertown needs some more aggressive people on the D. Kirksey had the hit of the season on Fournette, but it came in the fourth quarter, not the first. They will need to secure three new CBs and an OT in this draft.
A lot of good RBs coming outto supplant Jones. Same time, next year, Win One.

Funny how I can agree with some of your points and think you are way off on others.
It's about time someone pointed to the obvious. Thank-you.

Now for my therapeutic rant aimed at anyone just random thoughts to vent....

King is the #1 reason. Hey guys get burnt, miss throws, drop passes, miss blocks etc, Tampa is a good team things are going to happen BUT.

King was exposed over and over and looked both short on football IQ, heart, and athletic ability. He single handedly loss this game. Once again plenty of guys have bad plays but he went above and beyond.

Chad Sullivan doesn't suck but he is nowhere close to a starting slot corner. He's a back-up.

Redmon sucks and there's a reason he seldom plays if possible. He's terrible. Easy interception and he chokes, alligator arms = choke.

pettine was GREAT. Enough with the clueless comments on him being the issue.

Hello-- when you're down and the opponent is stopping the run you pass. It's what the packers have done all year to other teams. It wasn't the play calling AT ALL.

I've been saying it ALL YEAR, Though admirable in his flexibility Turner is not good at Guard or Tackle. He is good at being not that bad against decent teams, good against bad teams. But against the best he sucks. Period.

Wagner was hurt and out there on guts alone and it wasn't enough.

The injury to Bach is the biggest reason we lost, the injury to Greene and lang didn't help.

EQ didn't drop the ball, it was tipped. It was a near impossible catch. Try it sometime
Lazard wasn't a drop, he was held with an arm being locked and his body turned. terrible non-call. Not going to blame the refs but they didn't help.

Rodgers wasn't going to make it on the 10 yards out play. He's slow compared to the DBs and had one to his left that would of made the play.

Any talk of Rodgers leaving is media driven for self serving money reasons.

The Packers have a chance to be better next year.

OT and CB are BY FAR the biggest needs. Then edge.

MVS might be a star in this league.

AJones showed both how good he can be and why he shouldn't be resigned. He is injury prone and is not a power back that this scheme needs. (Look around the league at the backs in this scheme) Still really like him both as a player and person but spend the money on Linsley, cut Turner if need be.

The GM has been fantastic but:
Oren Burkes and Josh Jackson failures as players really came back to bite us in the butt. Summers stinks and will be gone next year. Once again good guy gives it everything he has but its not enough at this level.

Z needs to take a pay cut.
Kenny Clark stepped up.
Kirksy looks good in his new position Will LB
Gary is for real
We need to sign or draft a gadget RB/WR/KR/PR....

Not calling Arod a choker, he played fine but was it his best?

Brady showed why he is a GOAT sure he missed throws, had some Int, not all him, even had to deal with drops but dang it if he didn't know exactly how to take advantage of the DB's. Just focused on King and Sullivan. It paid off.

Great Season, shame they came up short, hats of to Tampa here's hoping Gute can pull a few moves to better this squad. really nor far off. Being in the bottom of the draft and having a terrible cap position is going to severely hamper this.

My next biggest worry? SF healthy with a good qb in 2021.

Coach, I made a case for Pettine in the snap count article: the defense adjusted and absolutely shut down TB in the 2nd half.

But Pettine wasn't great.

With 8 seconds left and no timeouts, TB had the ball on the GB 39 (56 or 57 yard field goal), this defense should not play man coverage with inside leverage and a single high safety who isn't shaded towards King. The defense has to defend the sidelines and the end zone. Tampa Bay was out of timeouts. GB had a timeout to discuss what defense to play, but this is an awful defense to play in this situation. It doesn't defend the end zone or the sidelines. 21-10 is not a great situation, but GB would receive the 2nd half kickoff. 28-10 is a calamity.

Call for a Firing. I second that! Right on! King- was he on Drugs? So much was made of him being activated. Why wasn't he benched ? If a WR doesn't catch the ball. He's pulled. It's Time this Defense is run the same way.

I think it's many of the fans who are panicking, and the author of this article.
It's one thing to question decisions, but in this case way too much to say that the Packers were permeated with "panic."
The Bucs put a lot of pressure on our offense and defense with fast and physical football. They roughed us up. It's a lot harder to make the right decisions under such duress.
Overall, the Bucs are a top team that made a lot of good plays.
The Packers are a top team that seems to be not quite as good.
We played hard all the way through the game, though, and generally didn't panic.
Both teams made multiple mistakes, but that doesn't mean panic.
After only two years at the helm, MLF is way ahead of schedule with the Packers.
It only makes sense that we have some deficiencies that need significant improvement.
Let's analyze the game for our weak spots, but not tear down the team with words like "panic."
The Packers weren't quite good enough. That happens.
Let's look at how we can get better, rather than us as fans succumbing to "panic."

If one panics when there is no duress, that person has a real problem.

So, normally one panics only when there is duress. So, when there is pressure or duress, one would like to see poise.

28-23 with 12:20 left in the 4th quarter, LaFleur dials up INC deep, 5-yard pass to Jamaal, 10 yard sack, Punt. Brady throws an INT.

28-23 with 9:15 left in the 4th quarter: LaFleur dials up Sack but for 0 yards lost,; 2nd 10: INC Deep, INC short middle. Punt. TB puts up a FG.

31-23 (8 pts, so TD plus 2 pt conv) 4:42 left: LaFleur dials up 9 yard run by Dillon (37 seconds), 29 yd deep completion to MVS (44 seconds) to the TB 28 yard line, INC (5 seconds), 9 yard completion OB (39 seconds), 3rd and 1 eleven yard completion (6 seconds), INC (3 seconds), INC (4 seconds), INC, FG with 2:05 seconds. AR ran the play clock down to nothing on every play! TB's OLBs were getting great jumps on the snap and the OTs are already struggling.

GB is going to need a stop and get the ball back most likely. Getting a TD isn't a given and 2 point conversions are 50-50. GB has stopped TB cold all second half. Given the time AR took between even passing plays, some runs wouldn't take more time. Here you see one 9 yard run to start the drive and 8 consecutive passing plays.

I wonder if there would have been a run in those last 8 plays if a home run threat like Jones were available? I see the bandwagon building for Dillon being fine as the bell cow next year, and I agree he looks like a decent option, but it reminds me of how people suggested we don't need the dancing bear at LT. We don't against many teams; leaving Bakh on an island and being able to slide help to just the RT side would have been doable against TB, but a team can't help both the LT and the RT without shrinking the playbook. Means keeping a TE like Lewis in to help on OT and having the RB chip for the other side and hope nothing comes up the middle.

On the back shoulder TD pass to Adams, AR has time but throws it too quickly - even Adams isn't ready in time for it. Next pass is wild high in the end zone for Adams. Those things happen, so I don't know that there was panic by the players. Not so sure about the sidelines or if AR changed the plays.

Again, Pettine made the adjustments in the 2nd half. It is far easier to say that Brady panicked in the 2nd half. He made multiple bad decisions and not just on 2 of the 3 INTs. OTOH, he was smart enough to throw the ball into the ground to preserve Succup's 46 yard field goal.

So, not so much on the players. More on the sidelines and play selection.

In the heat of the moment, we do the best we can.
Afterward, we revisit the situation to see what we could have done better.
It's worthwhile to to analyze the play calling in this game, and to consider the alternatives.
We can consider that MLF is only in his second year as head coach, and seems the kind of person who will continually learn from his experiences and build on them.
Another question is what to do we mean by panic.
If the offensive line isn't holding up, and a quarterback is being harassed, he's going to have a sense of urgency that will likely cause him to do things more quickly -- which means his decisions in general likely won't be as good.
That's probably not panic, though.
What was happening on the sidelines, to my mind, was probably not panic, either.
While Dillon did gain nine yards on that run, and maybe should have been given a couple more carries, the coaches were calling the plays to the best of their ability.
Maybe now they look back and have some new ideas as to what may have worked better, but that doesn't mean they panicked at the time.
It's hard to know the dynamics on the field and on the sidelines during any game, and different participants may have different observations and interpretations of what happened.
I don't really know if there was panic to a greater or lesser degree; but my best impression was that there was not.
There were errors in judgement, as in any game -- and probably more in this game due to the jarring defense of the Bucs, and the momentousness of the game.
The key is to evaluate what happened and to learn from it for what we hope are big playoffs games in the near future for the Packers.
As it was, for a tick or two of time, I truly thought we had stopped the Bucs with less than two minutes but enough time for Rodgers to lead a winning touchdown.
Whatever we make of the crushing pass interference call, it was to me the biggest gut punch of the game.
P.S. I'm glad to have you here at this site to talk football, reynoldo.

Completely agree on Pettine. He normally plays too much prevent and then plays press man coverage the one time he should be in prevent. For a veteran DC, he makes too many mistakes and MLF needs to move on.

The worst part is that the Packer salary cap situation is going to cause this team to regress a bit next year. 2020 was Rodgers last best shot at a SB. The Packers will be competitive with AR over the next couple of years, but I think the window may just have closed.

Can’t really agree, Guam.

The Pettine thing makes me laugh. We hate the Prevent and we’re angry when he doesn’t play prevent and we give up a bomb. Of course we should have been in prevent. We’re 28-8 with Pettine...he’s not going anywhere.

Most of this team will be back next year. On defense, we’ll have to replace King. On offense, Dillon will have to replace the production of Jones/Williams. We should be favorites to win the division again.

All season, whenever we protected Rodgers we scored enough to win. We didn’t do that yesterday. My hope is that we address that in the offseason. Too many passes and not enough runs, IMO

You are right, I may be over-reacting LH, at least on the window closing. That game was a bitter pill to swallow.

However I still think Pettine is in trouble. Even MLF publicly called him out over the press man coverage on the last play before half time. I just see this defense making too many stupid plays. I would prefer a different DC as I think our good record is more attributable to the offense than the defense.

Ans yes, we need to run more and pass less. Time to address OT in the draft (as well as DT).

It isn't as far open as it was this season. AR knows it. We'll see what the cap turns out to be. Right now GB loses Linsley, Jones and maybe Lewis to retirement and maybe Wagner and Jamaal as a cap casualties as well. They will tender or sign Tonyan, and probably Ervin, but not Austin. Not sure what happens with Lane Taylor. On D, they lose King, Preston, Kirksey, and maybe M. Adams. Among the RFAs, perhaps they can sign or tender some of but perhaps not all of Sullivan, Greene, Redmond, Lancaster, and Boyle.

10 incoming draft picks, probably 7 in the first five rounds, so maybe 8 make the team plus internal development of players already drafted, like Runyan or Stepaniak for IOL, and Ramsey/Garvin/Tipa for depth behind Z and Gary. That's balanced against at least 5 main departures and probably one or two RFAs leave.

Any way one looks at it, GB will lose two elite starters, 2 more starters, and a few contributor types who are proven.

Guam, you seem to be right. however, you never know. A few creative management moves and a successful draft could make us champs. We all screamed for a ILB and we got a good one as an undrafted free agent and a TE who caught only a few passes before this season. When a team has all the important positions covered (QB, elite WR, LT, pass rusher, eilte CB) complementary players can be easier to find.

I agree. they panicked. Especially MLF, who wussed out in a big moment. His mentor, Sean McVay, also tends to wuss out when the spotlight is on so I'm not surprised.
I am basically tired of this Groundhog Day scenario and would really like to see Gutey blow this team up at this point. Trade Rodgers and take the massive dead cap hit. Let most of the FAs walk. Cut the high-priced dead wood. Get a couple 1st rounders for AR, absorb a couple 2-14 seasons and use the high draft choices to rebuild the team into what MLF really envisions.
I know it's never gonna happen because the Packers business model is stay good enough to beat the bad and average teams, somehow make the playoffs, and cross your fingers that your opponents in the playoffs have massive injury problems (like a star DL with bad ribs and a starting QB with a busted thumb) and you'll luck your way to the Big Show. However, I can still dream....

Doubt that happens. I believe Gutes best answer is what the Saints did. Trade 2 #1s for the 10th pick of the draft and take a DL. No Davenport is needed. Or CB that high. If TT can find Casey Hayward in the second rd. Gute can too. But getting another Clarke is the key to healthy LBs. And winning the trench!

Coaching: The two absolutely inexcusable miscues were the FG on fourth down and the TD allowed at the end of the half. The FG is worthless without the touchdown, and it robbed us of one more chance. And Pettine should be gone after that lapse in judgment.

You usually need a very good coaching staff to win the title. Look at the Super Bowl coaches. Who would you rather have: Reid/Spagnuolo and Arians/Bowles; or MLF/Pettine? There's a significant gap there in my opinion. MLF was not afforded the opportunity to choose his own staff, and overall, has done a fine job with the offense during two regular seasons and divisional playoff games. But on the other hand, the team has not played with poise in a few instances (at least this they did respond to adversity this time, though), and MLF seems to have little appetite for creativity and none whatsoever for unpredictability. So I'm not as high on him as maybe some other fans are; I still think he has much room for improvement and needs to show he is command of the entire team. And at what point is he given the chance to hire his own defensive and ST coordinators?

The Executive Committee has given that authority to the Packer Vice President and General Manager of Football Operations. To be blunt, I don't think Gute will be giving up any of that power anytime soon. If MLF wants to be the 'Man', then he needs to convince the Executive Committee why they should vest him over the guy who will be one of the finalists for pro GM of the year. Hard to see that that happening.

I can’t agree on describing the Packers performance as a panic. After falling behind 28-10, the Packers drove for TDs on 2 consecutive drives. The second after a pick by Amos. We were 28-23 with plenty of time left. After that Alexander made 2 picks on 2 consecutive Bucs possessions.

The problem to me was giving up on the run game in the 4Q. Too many empty backfields. We needed to run the ball to try to keeps the Bucs pass rush honest and when we did throw we needed play action plus a TE chip to try to slow down the Bucs edge rushers. Too much placed on ARs shoulders as usual. Why not bang at the Bucs with Dillon? Their defense was in the field a long time in the 2nd half as evidenced by the Packers TOP of 34:37. We needed to play more physically at that point in the game. We also needed quick slants and quick passes to our RBs and/or TEs.

The decision to go for the FG on 4th and goal is definitely questionable but I’m not sure it was panic. I would agree that King panicked by grabbing the WRs jersey. But given that he allowed 2 long TDs and was beaten again, he was desperate.

Except for the Bucs TD after the Jones fumble the Bucs never reached our red zone for the entire game. Their 3 offensive TDs game from the 20 or beyond. 2 thanks to King. What could have been with another CB or another DC? We’ll never know. Thanks, Since ‘61

Who did the Packers have other than King? Jackson was inactive, a healthy scratch. Holliman(sorry for the misspelling) was inactive and Sullivan was already playing in the slot and Redman was playing with a bad knee. There are no secrets when it comes to injuries in the NFL. Tampa knew there were no real replacements for King, so they attacked. What I don't get is why either MLF or Pettine did not call a timeout to get the defense set at the end of the half. There was confusion in the secondary about alignments, and Brady being an old pro took advantage of it. I worry about the bad blood between MLF/Pettine MLF/Gute building, because of the way the season ended again. More likely I'm just reading too much into it...

The opportunity to bury the Bucs were there, especially in the 1st half. They couldn’t stop them on 3&6+ yards 6 times. No jams on the line, nothing to disrupt the timing.Offensively, the abandonment of the rhythm on O was abandoned when there was no need to go heavy pass. All in all, a painful learning experience. On the good side, the window isn’t closing on anything but this season.

Mike Pettine needs to be released. Kevin King will not be back or if he is back he will be back on a low ball money deal. I hope Packers have another option in mind, which I am sure they do. For Mike Pettine when it comes to coaching, you have to know how to utilize your players and he does not know how to do that in the right times. We need a replacement for king, but we need a DC that knows how to coach in the moment.

Head Coach, MLF. You failed buddy. You went away from your game plan and you lost it. Stick to what got you there, balance the run and pass even when it looks like its not working, because its working. Coach must learn to keep his head together in these types of situations.

We have a very good team, they need to improve in some areas but it wont be long before we are hoisting the Lombardi trophy again. GPG.

Yesterday was essentially an encompassing redux of the 2019 GB vs SF nightmares. Playoff prime time is supposed to highlight progress, where regular season gaffes have been amended; it's difficult to reach this far without doing so. Yet in the biggest spotlight, WI sports--be it the Packers, Bucks, Brewers, too often crumble under pressure. Under normal retribution, we would need more than our own set of hands to have enough fingers to point blame; it is human nature to deny accusations to dodge public shame. At sports highest level of competition, success is 90% mental, 10% physical and CONFIDENCE ultimately decides who gets the job done. Brady sweats it and his supporting cast bought in from day 1.

Such a devastating loss. In a way it was worse than the 2014 debacle in Seattle. What was supposed to be a “two for one” double possession- at the end of the first half/ beginning the second half - blew up the game with the Pettine single high safety call and subsequent King burn followed by the Jones fumble to open the third quarter. So many other variables contributed to this heartbreaker but that’s where the game was essentially lost.

The billionaires don't want a community owned football team. From teeny tiny Green bay,Wi winning the Super Bowl.. The refs are paid for by the owners.. Unless green bay can acquire 15 pro bowlers, even a HOF can't be expected to be able to win the right games.. Once again TB gets very little calls against them.. Gutie better do the draft of his career. And get free agent, if he has the monies....

The field goal at the end of the game suprised me. The failure to not attempt an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff shocked me.

Thank you for calling out LaFleur on the two-point conversion attempt in the third quarter. There were going to be more points scored in the game, so it would have made more sense to kick the PAT instead of chasing points. Plus the Packers had been struggling in those goal-line situations in the game up to that point.

I disagreed with the late field goal too, although I would describe that as panic. It was just the wrong decision, although I can see why LaFleur did it.

"if King doesn't panic, the Packers get the ball back with plenty of time to mount a possible game-winning scoring drive."-----wrong....if the ball is uncatchable, then there should have been no flag...the officials screwed that one up, and moron matt didn't challenge...

Trade Rodgers for three #1s ala John Hadl of yore.

Shift payroll into 2022 when financial impact of trading Rodgers is greatest.

Keep Corey Linsley and build a great OL for Jordan Love & AJ Dillon.

Let Jones/Williams go and draft another stud RB.

Offer Pittsburgh a #1 for Chase Claypool.

Sherman was Favre's boot-licking lackey so I don't understand the point of your comment. I'm saying the future is now so get on with it.

Y'all were right 4 years ago when Old Ted passed on TJ Watt and gave us Kevin King.
That pick cost us a Super Bowl IMO.
King gave up 14 points plus the chance for us to get the ball back.

Had we gotten Watt, we would have had someone else, anyone else, besides King, and that's a win.
And we wouldn't have needed to give huge money to Preston Smith.
Zadarius plus Watt plus Gary would be lethal.

AR is just not Prime Time in big post season games. 1-4 speaks for itself.
The D has been the week link for a decade. Pettine is Capers-lite. We draft poorly on defense. Other than Alexander and to some extent Clark, we have slow, poor fundamental defensive players. TB demonstrates how a defense should operate. Brutal, aggressive, form tackling. None of those qualities exist in any Packer D player. A lot of younger commenters have stated ILB is not a high need in todays NFL. That is pure BS. I wish GB had a Devin White to lead this D. Please in the future draft high round defensive players predominantly from the SEC and ACC conference. These young men have proper skill sets coming right out of high school let alone refining the skills in college. Draft on past performance and prior injury history. Enough of the "reaching" for development players at round 1-3. A first rounder (other than possibly QB) should have the skill sets to start immediately.

Great points. I think all of us knew they were going to throw against King on the 3rd down play. Grabbing the jersey in the middle of the field, and then holding on as the WR creates separation, was a killer. Going for the FG was a stunner. I get it (but hated it), but still a bad message to send to the team.

Excellent article Al. Wasn't thinking of the game in this way, i.e., "they panicked", but when you break it down, there's a lot that happened that wasn't happening in the games leading up this one, and players didn't make what should have been fairly straightforward plays. Two examples being Redmon's failed interception and ESB's two-point conversion drop. (And yes, the "it was tipped" argument is lacking. The ball barely moved and hit him in the chest.)

The abandonment of the run when you're down 28-10 is one thing, but when you climb back into it, and have time to sprinkle in some running plays again and still don't is a head shaker. And that includes Rodgers attempting a pass that likely would not be completed when he had room to run for at least 5 yards on the now infamous field goal decision drive.

I think "panic" is a pretty accurate assessment.
