Because a large contingent of us do not like podcasts...
Murphy was interviewed during a HS girls basketball game. Here's a series of quotes:
When asked if there was a scenario in which Rodgers is still the starting QB of the Packers in the 2023 season, Murphy responded: “Yeah, I mean, unless, if things don’t work out the way that we would want them. Yeah, he is obviously a great player.”
“We are fortunate to have back-to-back hall of fame quarterbacks,” Murphy said. “It kind of happens in our game. Very few players play for only one team. Brett had a great career here. Aaron had a great career here. Regardless of what happens, Aaron will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He will be in our hall of fame. We will bring him back and retire his number. But this is just one of the things that you go through as a team. We want to try to achieve something that is good for both Aaron and us.”
Murphy said the focus now is on “Trying to find what he wants and what we want and hopefully we can find a win-win situation.”
He also said, “It’s a situation where we wanted to help Aaron achieve what he wanted, as well as the Packers, and hopefully create a situation where it’s kind of a win for both sides.”
Murphy confirmed the Jets were given permission to talk with Rodgers.
“We did give them permission,” Murphy said. “But I really can’t get into the details and we are just really hopeful that we can reach a resolution that works not only for Aaron, but for us.”
As for when this will all get resolved? Murphy hopes for a conclusion soon.
“We’d love to have it resolved by the start of free agency,” Murphy said.
Murphy is now onboard with trading Rodgers. Why the hell wasn't he on board LAST YEAR when we could've made a great trade with Denver? Well, at least he's on board now.
And then there's this:
"As for the heir apparent, Jordan Love?
“We have a lot of confidence in him,” Murphy said. “We drafted him and developed him. A lot of credit goes to our coaches and to Jordan. We do think he is ready.”"

Thanks Jurp. I am not a fan of podcasts, so the written quotes were welcome. This does sound like a done deal doesn't it?

It was obvious that the Packers were going with Love on Tuesday. You don’t let your QB1 talk to another team about playing for them unless you’re planning on replacing him. Rodgers can go to the Jets or retire. Either way he’s done in Green Bay.

Valid point barutanseijin, but Murphy backtracked on the "plan" last year when he resigned Rodgers to that awful contract instead of moving on. It was good to hear Murphy publicly acknowledge that the plan now was to move forward with Love and not Rodgers. Getting Murphy on board should prevent any last minute changes of course (again).

It may be a comparable situation to Rodgers running the play clock down to the last millisecond; but it could also be adding Bakh to the trade, as well as other players/draft picks from both teams.
May the deal get done, and may it be for the best of everyone involved -- including the fans of both teams.
I'm excited for a new era of Packers football.
***
If this trade of Rodgers goes through, it seems the Packers are going to be stockpiled with talent, including a lot of guys already on the roster to go with a load of draft picks.
I wonder, though, if such a trade, even if it includes Bakh, doesn't actually open up much cap money for this upcoming season of 2023, even if it helps more so afterward.
My point being that the Packers are going to be overwhelmed with young talent going into this season, but may not have much money for signing free agents.
***
All of this leads me to hope that the Packers could be really good right away this next season -- even going beyond contention for a wild card to striving for a division title.
Which leads me to further wondering if the one type of player we could use urgently for this next season is a veteran wide receiver or tight end.
Even if Lazard stays a Packer, which I think is a very good idea, perhaps we try for a pass catcher of the caliber of a D. J. Moore, for example, or a Calvin Ridley.
I'm wondering if such a pass catcher could elevate the Packers from a record of 9-8 in 2023 to something like 11-6.
***
What do other fans think?
Is there a wide receiver or tight end out there worth getting? (Is there a pass catcher on the Jets worth obtaining who could be included in the Rodgers trade?)
Is there a way -- through trades or other means -- to pay for such a guy?
I'm wary of Odell Beckham Jr. becoming disgruntled if he doesn't get enough targets.
As I remember it, the wide receivers who were listed as free agents in a recent CHTV article didn't thrill me, but maybe I'm wrong.
It's hard to get a veteran who doesn't cost too much, who doesn't have too much baggage, but who is still likely to be highly productive.
I'm thinking we would need at least a WR2, or a tight end capable of 60 receptions (even if he's not used that much by the Packers).
***
We have Watson, but he's still young. We may have Lazard, but he seems at best a WR2. We have a promising performer in Doubs, and possibly another in Toure -- but, again, they're young.
At tight end, Tonyan may be much better recovered from his injury of 2021, but he's a question mark.
So, it seems to me at least worth discussing if adding a top pass catcher for next season is a worthwhile priority to begin the new era at quarterback in Jordan Love.

It's not inevitable for the Packers to make such a jump, but it seems doable.

There are weapons we could get that would help. Will they produce enough to result in two additional wins? I don’t think so. Needless to say, we have four 2nd year players in the WR room, so regardless of what we draft you’ve got to imagine they’ll be looking to bring a veteran in via Free Agency or through the Jets trade package. I don’t see us making a move for a true WR1 with Watson having the ability to ascend to stardom as early as this year.

Im guessing when it comes to compensation that there was a deal in place or an outline of a deal in place before the jets were allowed to talk to rodgers....
It's also my guess that theres no way in hell the packers trade orders with out high confidence ion Jordan love. If love sucks everyone in GB will lose their jobs
One more thing: lots of people on rodgers like hes a diva....well maybe he is a diva but he hasn't said anything. Its the media thats doing all of the talking. Rodgers hasn't said Boo

"but he hasn't said anything. Its the media thats doing all of the talking. Rodgers hasn't said Boo"
Think about that a little. His silence produced much more media interest than it would be if he talks. Even Rappaport and Schefter stoped their speculation after ACR call them on the last McAffe show that nobody knows anything about his position, especially those two.
Collecting info about how media talks he can adjust his announcement when and if any deal will be made, giving him leverage to again looks like the most clever over all of them. This prolonged silence also serving to rise as much media interest as it may.
He has talent for football, no doubt, but his talent to manipulate media is at much higher level.

I think it's a big decision for him and he wants to take his time. Hes played for the Packers for 15 years....so going to another team is a big deal. Green Bay is his home. He grew up there as a pro....
personally I wont miss him but I will miss his talent. Hes given all of us packers fans a lot of great moments. He was the best. We should just give him his space

Bakh has been restructured. they took the whole of his $9.5M Roster Bonus and almost all of what they could from his base salary. Like the other restructures, they left his $700K workout bonus and $600K game active bonus alone. Bakh's cap numbers are $21.353M and $40.565M in 2024, per OTC.
So, Bakh would not agree or GB didn't ask for void years. Interesting.
GB gets $7.5M in cap relief but we've been assuming $12.028M in cap relief from Bakh. That tells me GB is no longer in a win-now mode. $4.5M is enough as a first year cap number to buy a starting safety, or a pretty good Defensive tackle. And they didn't get it. Will they restructure Douglas and Campbell? They will extend Gary.

March 10, 2023 at 06:02 pm
If I read it correctly, this would make it more attract to a buyer were we to trade him? Next year his cap hit seems ridiculous from what I’ve read. Is it fair to say it’s a one year deal.
Thegreatreynoldo
March 11, 2023 at 03:40 am
Could be a one year deal, but it is possibly just for 7 or 8 games. The trade deadline is usually week 8. It seems possible that GB might part with Bakh at the trade deadline, particularly if they aren't contenders, Tom and Nijman (rookie, etc.) look good.
Bakh is due $21.5M in 2024 and the acquiring team would get him for 10 or 11 games, roughly $733K and $353K in potential game active bonus payments. $22.8M for 10 games in 2023 and perhaps 17 more in 2024 might be enticing. If you're in contention in october and Bakh costs $1M for the rest of the season, lots of fans and GMs will not worry about 2024 - it isn't guaranteed money, after all.

Exactly what I had been wondering, thinking if Bak were to be included in a package deal with AR, part of our compensation would increase if the Packers were to take on the bigger portion of his cap hit? Or taking on more of both AR & DB $$$ owed in exchange for increased draft capital thrown in?
That’s the only thing that makes sense to me with this minute leakage of info on the trade details, which yesterday pointed to the money being the issue.

Yeah, kinda funny how everyone has been bitching at Murphy - the one who had the balls to tell ARod not to be the problem - saying that Murphy is a dumber and more evil version of Satan and assuming that it was Murphy who was forcing Gutey, MLF and everyone else to keep ARod on the team. Maybe all the pitchfork-packin' narratives aren't based on fact as much as people imagine.

Murphy said that early, and then had to backtrack and send front office personnel out to AR's place to grovel. And then signed off on that monstrosity of a contract.
It is true that responsibility for the AR saga is murky, but that is because Murphy changed the organizational structure such that no one knows who does what, only that they all report to Murphy. If they all report to Murphy, then he is the responsible party. Hence, the pitchforks generally get aimed in Murphy's general direction.

It is obvious to everyone that Murphy is an idiot.
If he wasn't, he would've traded 12 to Denver last year, Love would've probably won us as many or more games as 12 did last year, our Cap would already be better off...
Our rookies would be ready to make their 2nd year jump in Love's 2nd year of starting, and Hackett would still be a HC.
We would be picking at #5 Overall, #15 Overall, #37 Overall, and #45 Overall...
I think people are idiots if they don't think Mark Murphy is an idiot...

The undisciplined mind sees infinite possibilities, but the Zen mind realizes there is only one. From the moment Jordan Love was drafted, this day was coming.
After all the smoke has cleared, it's going to be interesting to see what we get in compensation and how much that massive contract ends up actually costing us. I'll reserve judgement until then, but it looks like we're going to transition from Rodgers, get extra picks in the draft, and get some salary cap relief.
Not a bad piece of work, IMO.

I think all of us here owe Mark Murphy an apology.
I know everyone has been hard on him for not wanting to trade Rodgers last year. In retrospect, it would have been a great move, but I must confess I was on board with keeping Rodgers last year. He had just won 2 straight MVPs and Love was nowhere near as ready as he is now. I thought we still had a chance to win it all.
What this tells me is Murphy is no longer the "evil, ignorant" President many people have claimed him to be. He, like us, has an opinion on the Packers, and I think that, for the past few months, we all have been jumping to conclusions about Murphy.

When you use Star Wars analogy, lets go there. Once young Anakin was promising Jedi, but with the senator Palpatin get his dictator position it turn out that he is dark side imperator. Who lured young Anakin to come over to the dark side offers him might. And Anakin (ACR) became Darth Vader.
After defeat, imperator gave up and was killed by Darth Vader (That tired and "killed" Mark Murphy looks at that video clip). And, after all Darth Vader did the positive thing (he accepted trade, as he left this world/Packers with new hope).
It looks like better analogy...

To make a mistake but be willing to see it does redeem to a considerable extent, however the nature of the contract we achieved that but means we are left with a significant burden that need not have been taken on.
Now we get to see if LaFleur is a real head coach. If he is reborn free from Rodgers that’s a positive for Murphy, but if he’s not, it will be pretty clear that the reason we never got back to the big dance was a choice Murphy imposed. However, if he does appear reborn, one should be asking about the wisdom of the pairing with Rodgers for so long as well. Even the positive raises fundamental questions for Murphy. We still have the issue of the wisdom Barry and continuity to work out too, even if LaFleur’s offense is a revelation.
Finally, none of this fixes what Murphy has done to the Harken structure. That in itself should be an unacceptable situation. It will almost inevitably bite us in future after he’s gone at some point if not fixed.
I find it interesting that some have the desire to exonerate a guy who just blew tens of million in cap and probably more in trade than we may get, when we could have just parted ways without any cap consequences last year. I guess people can be fans of almost anyone or just much more comfortable with trusting deference to leaders.
Now we have to wait and see if Rodgers is amenable and hope he is or retires. I doubt the latter is particularly pretty if it’s not what he wants. The idea that he could return and that end happily now is a stretch at best. However, we can’t stop him as that would effectively require cutting him, which we can’t do due to that contract, which Murphy drove through with Ball.
So, while I do give some credit to Murphy for realizing his error of a year ago, I don’t think that gets him into the positive realm. Fascinated by the need of some here to manufacture confidence in Murphy. It’s not justified as I see it. Unless Rodgers takes the oath we are now forced to pray he does, this could yet get very ugly and even if he does we are paying royally for the privilege.
Now what I would dearly love to know is what changed. I don’t for a minute buy the idea that it’s Love primarily. We could have let him go last year and signed a replacement place holder easily. Look at what Seattle did. From stating that we’d be idiots to let him go for a deal likely as least as good and with less cap consequences and control on our part to now overtly hoping he elects to go is a very significant journey. No, there’s more to this. I have a feeling someday it will leak out in this case, or some version.

There were no big changes made this offseason so it could be as simple as them blaming Rodgers for the losing record, despite the obstacles they put in front of him.
I'm not convinced that Love can throw accurately on the move(he'll certainly never be Rodgers in that category) so any offensive improvement will have to come from the growth of Watson and Doubs and a gelled OL. Keeping Barry gives me no hope for a top 10 defense despite a decent collection of talent on that side. I have a buddy that's a real knowledgeable football fan and he's convinced that between Love and keeping Barry the Packers will go 6-11 or 5-12 this year. He asked me if I thought that would get LaFleur fired and I told him it could get everyone fired. Would the board want Murphy to pick the replacements a year before he retires?
As for the Jets they had three QBs combine to throw 14 TDs and 14 Ints last year. Rodgers could throw 14 TDs blindfolded. As long as their D stays in the top 10 they're a playoff team with Rodgers at QB. Getting Hall back at mid season could really fuel a strong run for them.

Say what? He signed off on the mega deal just last year? Now if the deal wasn't done yesterday he's talking out of turn and hurting their negotiating position. No apology from me and I can't wait til he's retired. After that I hope they split the job so there's a president of business operations and a president of football operations. I also hope that president restores the previous hierarchy. No one knows the future but it wouldn't surprise me if everybody in this current FO is gone in the next couple years.

Fan Talk from the Lawyers in the Crowd:
First of all, when you're trying to negotiate a deal, the last thing you should be doing is telling everyone you don't want the thing you're trying to make a deal to sell/trade. Maybe hold off on talking about how you want to get rid of him and speaking of his career as a Packer in the past tense until the deal is completed, huh poker face? Second, when it's something like this, maybe unscripted comments at the WIAA girls basketball games isn't the way to go. Probably not the classiest way to announce the end of the career of what has been one of the best players in the franchise's history. Fourth, when has anyone every heard Murphy make unscripted comments that give you the impression that he's a professional able to speak extemporaneously without putting his foot in his mouth.
But after the unceremonious way Murphy announced the end of his career in GB today, why would Rodgers feel any loyalty to the organization? After that big WIAA girls basketball middle finger, why wouldn't he just say to Woody Johnson "Don't make the trade, I'll announce my retirement and trigger a payment they can't afford, they'll have no choice but to cut me since they've burned the bridge, and we can use that draft pick to make the team more competitive"?. Gutekunst/Murphy gave away a ton of leverage with the last contract. They gave away more trade leverage today. And for what? Shut your mouth, make the deal, then issue a generic thank you and move on. Be a pro. They may be decent and exaluating personnel and building tube slides and Pro Shops, but they've managed this whole thing pretty ineptly from start to where we are now.
If they match the three pick return from the Favre trade, they will bee Lucky.

you make a big assumption that I don't think you can make. In my scenario, the deal is already cut and the trade agreed to. the packers didn't agree to let the jets negotiate with Rodgers without establishing the compensation. this pronouncement is to play Rodgers into acceptance that he's no longer wanted.
Coldworld
March 11, 2023 at 12:47 pm
Unless they are really worried he’s going to say he wants to return, I think that it was ill advised. Murphy should be worried. He forced a contract that prevents us just cutting him. Not that that would be desirable, but it means we’ve got no backstop at all.
If Rodgers doesn’t want to go we are stuck with a QB we don’t want and have now openly said so, at least until June and then we’d be lucky to get a thank you card to compensate us for the tens of millions in cap and cash he represents thanks to that deal.
Does anyone think that will be pretty as it works its way out? I think not. I think that, if Rodgers doesn’t agree to go to the Jets, this could be a historically ugly before it’s done. $60 million media contract in the works?

What Murphy said was already clear, even to the public, and the press had already connected the dots for those who didn’t do it on their own. It’s not Murphy’s fault that a good chunk of Packer fans chose denial and/orbattacked the messengers “Tyler Dunne/Silverstein/McGinn have a grudge against Rodgers blah blah blah”.
I suspect that the Packers told Rodgers that they were moving on well before all this, perhaps at the exit interview. My guess is that since then, Rodgers has been weighing retirement vs playing for another team.
greengold
March 11, 2023 at 10:24 am
No way.
Murphy deconstructed a fantastic management system built by Bob Harlan for his own gain. In doing so, he usurped all power within the Packers organization.
He chose LaFleur, not Gutekunst, whom Murphy eviscerated in so doing. Murphy fostered insubordination by keeping Aaron Rodgers, further compounding his error by paying him more.
The writing was on the wall then. Almost 3 years ago.
Rodgers’ “MVPs,” were more about his own stat padding, than his being an irreplaceable member of this Packers team. When has he ever exhibited “team first” motivations or actions?
Quite frankly, Rodgers’ actions often proved to be the opposite.
How does one throw to no one other than a triple covered WR for an entire 3 Quarters of a playoff game, with other options running free, wide open?
How do you not show up to build rapport with new key players?
How does THE money guy for a team as rich as the Packers turn away one of the best ST Coaches in NFL history in Rizzi, when the HC he alone selected requests him to be on his coaching staff?
Considering team goals, and the overall betterment of the Green Bay Packers, both Murphy & Rodgers have been meddlesome distractions hindering the team in its quest to achieve those goals.

In the end, signing Rodgers and not trading him showed to be the wrong decision. I was one who thought bringing Rodgers back was the right decision. I think the contract could’ve been better thou.
He was coming off of two MVP seasons the teams seemed pretty loaded with a defense that on paper looked like a top 5. What if Rodgers doesn’t break his thumb in week 5? They were 3-1 going into that game. Including that game, they then went 1-7. We will never know, but the broken thumb certainly changed the outcome for last season.
Salary cap issues are going to hamstring our Packers for a couple of years while they rebuild. YES, they will be going into rebuilding and it will be painful. Some might not think so, but you can’t keep pushing contracts into the future without it causing salary cap Hell. My prediction, is we won’t contend for the North for at least 2 years. Love will be learning how to contend in the NFL and hopefully at the end of year 2 we will see some greatness from him. If we play our cards right we can be in contention in year 3.
