I don't recall ever having this much roster churn in training camp. Not many surprises so far (except Dafney and Rambo), but just a lot of churn at the bottom of the roster. So far, these players have all departed:
Raleigh Texada
Donte Vaughn
B.J. Baylor
Ellis Brooks
Caliph Brice
Tre Sterling
Gabe Brkic
Steven Wirtel
Eli Wolf
Dominique Dafney
Randy Ramsey
Cole Schneider
George Moore
Hauati Pututau
Osirus Mitchell
Malik Taylor

A lot of it has been injury driven. Note how many of them are given injury designations and settlements after their release. In the old days, when you had 20+ camp practices, you could afford to let bottom-of-the-roster types stick around while they got healthy. Now, with 12 or so practices and a handful of walkthroughs, you need to make sure you have able bodies to get through the few practices you have. Time on the grass is too precious to waste.

Every year, we start training camp with 90 and trim it down to a 53 man roster. How is it different this year?

His point was the churn at the bottom of the roster is more robust. Yes, they have 90, then 85, etc. But it's not nearly the same 90 or 85. Lots of turnover at the bottom of the roster PRIOR to the cuts.
