Packers waive TE Michael Roberts following failed physical

-- The Michael Roberts era is over.

The tight end acquired off of waivers by the Green Bay Packers on Monday failed a physical, according to ESPN's Field Yates. It's his second failed physical in less than a week, first drawing concerns from the New England Patriots' medical staff.

Roberts, a fourth-round pick in 2017 by the Detroit Lions, was shopped to the Patriots in exchange for a 2020 conditional seventh-round pick. However, the trade was voided two days later due to the failed physical. Subsequently, the Lions released Roberts, leading to his opportunity in Green Bay.

It's unclear what specifically caused Roberts to fail both physicals, but for now, he reverts back to the waiver wire.

The Packers, meanwhile, have shown continued interest in stocking up the tight end position on their roster.

After the retirement of undrafted rookie Davis Koppenhaver, the Packers claimed Pharoah McKever off of waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars at the start of their minicamp slate. That transaction -- clearly to fil the roster void left behind by Koppenhaver's retirement -- coupled with general manager Brian Gutekunst's interest in Roberts shows that the Packers have some noteworthy plans for the position.

Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis are the two primary options at tight end for the Packers currently, with third-round pick Jace Sternberger expected to be a major part of their plans moving forward. Robert Tonyan, Evan Baylis and McKever fill out the bottom of the team's depth chart.

Oh Thank God, the culling happened even before we wasted a roster spot in camp. Praise God!

You know, Gute might not be targeting TEs specifically to fill out camp body spots. He could have just taken waivers on two best available positions that happened to be TEs

Kev, fine point from afar (we all are from "afar"); Look everyone, yes...it seemed odd, right?! Is Gutey trying??! Please, please have faith: i certainly do. Again, in the whole, or, as the Rock says: "to the good of the whole", let's say Gutey has done an admirable job of what he inherited. A once playoff team that's been on hiatus for a couple years, doesn't get back to the playoffs overnight. MM is gone, thank-you lord (from about 98% of the fan base) yet we thank him for his efforts and overall job..he just became complacent and IHMO, lost control of his charges. Gutey has re-tooled in fine fashion, and that includes coaches....a lot is on MLF shoulders and still quite a bit on AR, I'll take my chances with both! 10-6 minimum coming right up!

I'm glad Gute is leaving no stone unturned but Roberts was a little too much like Richard Rodgers for me. Big and slow and not a great blocker, decent hands though.

Third and 4. 1.5 yard out to R. Rodgers.

1.5 yards with forward progress, after his 6' 4", 257 pound frame is immediately driven backwards by a 180# CB.

Lol. So true. My friends surely grew weary of me yelling at the TV every time that was the outcome of a GB offensive play. Which was often.

Oh Lord........ It was clear he was not ready, Packers just wanted to know why. Question, (to be serious for the moment) is his shoulder repaired, did the lions or what doctor he use let him know how bad the damage is. Will be out for the year, or is he done playing football. Better to know now, so the young man can get on with the rest of his life.

Perhaps the point was to get their own medical assessment. This guy might be on the in season board in the event of injury. Gute has done a good job of using in season pick ups.

This is status quo for all teams. The extent to which they explore available players may have a little bit to do with their depth, but all teams bring in players based on their player lists.

I hope the Pack bring in 100. Maybe 200. Keep that list current. We will need someone (I hope not, but history says) at some point we will/have to.

Packers should try to resign Colt Lyerla. He would be the best TE on the roster.
