Packers Vs. Eagles: First Impressions

My immediate thoughts on the Packers - Eagles game.

...

Jason Spriggs starts at RG instead of Barclay. A moment of sanity for Mike McCarthy or was Barclay just hurting too much?

On the first two TD drives, Packers showed the patient, creative, short passing offense that has really worked on the random occasions they chose to use it this year. Worked great in Atlanta and then went MIA.

Alan Barbre... SMH.

Things are pretty bad when Morgan Burnett looks better playing ILB than your ILBs.

Mike McCarthy must have studied some other offenses this week. Rub routes, pistol formation, QB option, 3-back formation, slants, motion, quick strike offense.  An unpredictable offense - didn't think it was possible.

Evidently, having a team backed up inside their own five near the end of a first half is a bad thing for the Packers.

Nick Perry - that 3rd down, neutral zone infraction commiting, drive-extending guy.

It's uncanny how every Clinton-Dix INT is either a tipped ball or bad overthrow that finds him. Make of that what you wish.

Packers have to be the worst team in the NFL covering tight ends. They're not just catching passes, they're wide open doing it.

Jared Cook MIA. When he was spotted, he looked a bit out of it and as slow as Richard Rodgers.

You use your last challenge to gain two yards in the third quarter? Thanks, Pederson!

Can someone tell Starks to stop jumping out from behind his blockers? Just making it easier to get tackled.

First TD by a Packers running back this season is by Aaron Ripkowski. In Game 11.

Rodgers enters the "magic tent," Comes out and leads a TD drive.

Matthews basically played the majority of this game with one shoulder/arm. Very likely had to get shot up to continue.

Let's just be thankful the Eagles had no wide receivers good enough to torch our secondary deep.

I wish Mike McCarthy could be somewhat creative/unpredictable with his game plan like this every game. We would all be happier Packers fans.

Hey Adam, thanks for putting in a good word for us with the man upstairs. Whatever you said worked. Peace.

Just barely still in there!!!

We'll see what happens folks. Like I said, it very well could be too little too late, but 9-7 can probably win the division. Detroit would just have to lose to us and two other teams. Minnesota continues to dwindle. I understand anyone's pessimism, but for me there's just enough to cling onto.

Of course I’m happy with the win, but why did it take 11 games for the Packers to play well for 1 entire game? Why didn't they do this against Atlanta, Indianapolis, Tennessee, Washington? Same players... Same coaches...

Al - Because of the TV POV, I couldn't see the full LOS before the snap. When we did get a shot of it, I didn't see any press coverage by the Eagles DBs. It looked like they were giving AR and the receivers about 4-5 yard cushion, which AR exploited.

If we have learned anything over the past year or so, it has been that the defenses who use press coverage are successful. It throws the timing of AR and the receivers off and challenges the receivers to beat the DBs downfield and we don't have the speed to do that.

Is the Philadelphia secondary that weak or was this a strategic mistake on their part?

I can't say I studied the Eagles secondary, but I can tell you the Packers used more press busting techniques than they did in the last three games combined.

A solid game. #12 looking like #12 again. Defense at least credible, albeit against a rookie QB with limited skill position weapons. 1-0 this week...let's see how they do next week against Houston.

I live in Philadelphia, and I've been hearing about their deficiencies at WR all year. With Agholor out and Matthews hobbled during the game, Capers should have been fired on the spot if they allowed screen passes and Ertz to beat them.

I love what the offense did to that very good defense, but I think this season hinges on the D turning it around. I'm glad they limited them to 13 points (though it felt worse than that, didn't it?), but I'm not totally convinced yet that they can cover people.

Nice win for the Pack against a good defense on the road. I mentioned in my predictions for this game that if the Packers played with a lead they could win and that is exactly what happened. Wentz made a couple of mistakes missed his injured WRs. Middle of the field is still too open against Packer D. Good win. Need to do it again next week. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

61 and RC,

You were both right and I was wrong. It still might blow up in a second, but for tonight, I will happily enjoy my crow a la mode.

The offense still can't run the ball and the defense still can't stop the pass, but this was a better effort than we've seen since week 6 or so. I thought the season would be done now. Next playoff game coming up. Get that pass D shored up Dom and MM, give the ball to Michael.

Hope ARod is ok. He's been back to himself the past month. Too bad the defense decided to go MIA at the same time...

It's nice to win a game again. 1 game at a time.

Getting Randall back was a good thing for the pass defense. Randall is so much better then Hyde. Randall back also puts Rollins back in the slot where he is better.

some thoughts.

The offense was put on Rodgers and man he delivered.

Adams is really emerging. Those slant routes he runs, impressive!

I can't wait till Michael can get up to speed. Starks leaves so many yards on the field. That screen should have went for 10+, instead he gets 5.

Spriggs auditioning to replace Lang next year? He really held his own against one of the best DL in the game.

The CBs already look better with Randall back. Hyde should be a last resort CB.

This was a good win. Much needed win. Hopefully Rodgers and Mathews aren't hurt to bad.

As someone who appreciated Starks contributions over the years, I have to admit he adds very little to the running game. Takes awhile to get going with the long legs. Has a hard time cutting back and too often tries to go outside by giving up yards and allowing the D to flow to him for either a loss or little yardage. Uneven catching the ball and is prone to fumbling.

Time to move on even though Starks is a good egg.

It's crazy, our RB situation going into next year is a complete unknown. It seems like just a year or two ago we had a great 1-2 punch with Lacy and Starks, plus a bunch of promising undrafted guys vying for #3. Now we have exactly nobody.

RC, I agree on Adams. His routes looked sharp and he gained separation on his own merit.

I take note of Spriggs' performance, too. It was up and down (2 hurries, 2 bad runs that I remember, and he was too slow to get out on the screen to Starks). However, he was facing a great player in Fletcher Cox and some other very good players, including Graham. Cox had a good game, but he did not dominate. Linsley for example had some nice reach blocks but he lost a few battles with Cox (he was called for a blatant hold). I'd suggest that overall Spriggs' performance in his first start was encouraging.

Off topic. I'm listening to Vic spew nonsense again on WTMJ. He spoke about how MM ran the WCO and this was the packers identity. He did not mention that GB hasn't really run a WCO for a long time, or that MM could have used this type of 3 step drop much earlier and more often this season.

TGR-

I'm not saying Spriggs was perfect. (I didn't watch him solely the whole night). But when I did focus on him he more then held his own. Cox is a really, really good DT.
Considering this was his 2nd time playing Guard ever, I give him a lot of credit.
That holding penalty on Linsley I think was more on Rodgers being hurt. Linsley didn't want the DL to have a free shot at him.

McCarthy has some WCO in him. But no, this isn't the traditional WCO we have known.
I agree. They need to run more of this type of offense. Since the Atlanta game, they got away from what has been working. And basically had to rely on Rodgers to try and bring the team back.

Idiot Fan-

Drafting another RB has to be a priority. They have to get some young talent in the backfield. Rookie RB's can come in and play immediately.

I think they will bring Lacy back on a 1 year deal, but regardless they have to draft someone fairly high.

RC - we're in agreement on Spriggs. A little ugly, not perfect, but against a great player, it was definitely encouraging. I only mentioned Linsley to show that a pretty darn good player is going to have trouble with Fletcher Cox. Linsley was cleanly beaten by Cox and had to hold or AR would have been killed.

I loved getting roasted in the offseason when everyone was worshipping janis and calling for Adams job and I said Adams was doing fine. Those were the days...

I believe i said that adams will probably be replacing nelson in the not so distant future. And it sure is early, but Nelson is looking like just (still darn good) a possession receiver. Cobb has been invisible, and Adams has been making the big plays the last few weeks. On an offense that seems to lack big play players and only has possession receivers, I will take Adams climbing out of his sophomore slump.

Replacing Nelson? Never. Nelson Came back to help A-rod several times tonight. Thats what Adams doesn't do! If you noticed the catches Adams made, were made with his left hand. Something I pointed to 10 games ago. Throw to his left hand. A-rod did. The defender even Helped him on the 50 yard catch. But this was Adams best game in two weeks. Maybe ever as far as I'm concerned. As far as Janis is concerned. People wanted Janis because Adams dropped more than his share. Janis sitting the bench has become a cold WR now. They lost the opportunity to make him good. As long as A-rod is the QB in Green Bay. He will have his way with who he wants. But the biggest problem with that, is forcing it to Adams. A-rod had great vision tonight.

seriously, people... get over yourselves. you can admit to being wrong about a player.

Stockholder here. Dude I figured that Adams was left handed last year. Adams is a breadbasket catcher. I'm not wrong on Adams. If it's not in his bread basket he will drop the ball. His left Hand pulls the ball into it. But what I can tell you is Adams is faster then the back up CBs he's playing against. So The packers took 3 years to get him gaining yards. And in the meantime we have to pray he does not blow the chance to advance the packers.

Stockholder, do you live near GB?

If so, I advise you to go to TC and watch Devante catch footballs. Not only does the guy plucks balls out of the air away from his body, he may have the largest catch radius I've seen of any WR wearing green and gold.

Body catcher? Sorry, we will have to disagree on that.
..And I think it's possible you might be wrong about Adams.

Oppy: I do not live near Gb. I am a stockholder. And from what I've "seen", he is a Breadbasket catcher. He has done nothing to change my mind on that. If you watch A-Rod throw to him, their pin point passes to his bread basket. ( At least they have been for 3 years. ) It wasn't until this year he caught one over the middle ,above his shoulders. And it wasn't until Mongomery emerged, he became a better player in MMs offense. I don't go along with the injury BS. There is also a reason he is not on Ball return duties. Just not a fan. The favoritism to get Adams going has put this team in the hole. The press has been to positive for this guy. It's like camouflage. Only to pressure MM and TT on the defense struggles. Take away Nelson and Cobb and run Adams as your #1 WR. See what happens to A-rod. Lets anoint Adams as the #1. I'll bet we get TT, MM and staff replaced.

Good savy possession receivers get open on the move the chains catches. That is what nelson has become. He isn't the deep threat that we were accustomed to throughout his career. Maybe he can regain it. I would love for him to regain it. But 30 year old receives usually don't regain lost speed. I'm pretty sure adams was coming back to the ball the 13 catches he had against chicago. That's all he seemed to be doing. Only catching the ball when they throw to his left hand is a new one for me.

I'm glad green bay has nelson back, but statistically adams has been their best receiver, and im sure that is against rodgers wishes. He and nelson are buddies. Nelson has been target 16 times more than adams, yet adams has more yards and almost as many touchdowns. I'd have to look for the numbers. But your right, he has been using his left hand more and he has clearly been a left hand receiver his entire career.

Your comment also seemed a little spiteful of rodgers and his potential influence on janis's playing time. If you think Favre didn't have a big influence on a pass catchers career, I think you would be sorely mistaken. Be happy we have rodgers as long as we do, and that Ted drafted what looks to be a young promising wide out to keep the train moving.

#1 Nelson is still against the opponents top CB, Not Adams. Did you not see cobbs excellent catches. Watch Adams left hand. (See Above comment) I can name the 4 routes Adams will run. Both sides by the line of scrimmage. Down the left side line for his left hand. ( This keeps the defender from pushing it out.) The last is a slant that has to be in his basket or a hook for his left hand. My comment was a little spiteful. But it was aimed at Favoritism. It cost the development of the WRs that were behind him. Which all should be waived now. Montgomery is the #3 WR. Rodgers had his best game of the year last night. If it takes Adams for him to keep thinking like his old self , I'm for it. But the key for A-rod and his Wrs was to start with short passes. That is and what has been the key for A-rod. Not Adams.

I'm going to be spiteful now.... what you are saying is garbage.

Rodgers goes through his progressions and when a play breaks down he probably does look for Nelson. However the back should throws on 3rd down to Nelson are by design meaning they come from game preparation. That preparation has McCarthy, Bennett, Rodgers, the receivers, all involved so don't give me this favoritism. You don't have the best passer rating of all time by locking on your favorites... period.

Janis is what he is... mediocre. I think it's funny you say that Janis's development has been stunted by not playing him and turn around and call Adams a bread basket catcher. I've only seen one catch (haily mary) that Janis caught with his hands. By the way the same bomb that Adams caught last night was an exact replay of the one that boinked right off the chest of Janis against Indy.

Speaking of garbage listen to this idiot talk on this link. All he is doing is throwing out there is combine crap... doesn't translate to the field bucko

One prediction that I said in that article has become true.
'I think the area to really watch Adams is in the redzone. I think he will become the Jones of the WR's this coming year. Catching a lot of TD's.'

Currently there are 3 players ahead of Adams in TD receptions. Antonio Brown, Mike Evans, Nelson...

Like all Packer fans I am happy that #17 is starting to show up and I also agree that Nelson may have lost that white guy burst that made him so fatal in key moments! Nelson is still a very very good receiver and #12 trusts him MOST IMPORTANT. That being said Earlier this year I had become a little down on the whole WR Group and I have been looking for that guy to truly replace the old Jordy and I have gotten enamored of Corey Davis of Western Mich (Greg Jennings alma mater) he is as tall as Nelson has a burst and seems to catch everything and even better might be available in Rd 2. (TT does not draft reeceivers in Rd 1)

Hey rc, it's only been a very good 4 or 5 game stretch. But with the way the season has been going, he's one of our few bright spots. I have to see what his ypc is, considering the drop rate and his low ypc were the biggest complaints. I have a feeling his ypc is around 15, maybe higher.

Lacy is still the teams leading rusher, followed by rodgers. I would like to see a heavy dose of Christian michael soon. Starks has been doing too much dancing. One cut and north south please.

The draw game doesn't fit their offense, please delete it. They have not ran very many screens this year, and they have executed poorly when they have. That should be a major part of their gameplan. I liked the short passing game in place of their lack of a running game. It would be nice to see them take that tape and throw in a few well designed deep balls disguised as essentially short wr screens to attack the defenses cheating up like they did toward the third quarter. Defense is a problem. Needs to get healthy fast.

Adams was good his rookie year. A lot of people forget that. Last year he played hurt and lost his confidence.

Michael had one carry but it was a good 4 yards. I think he can help the offense.

The draw works better with the RB that can find the holes. Montgomery was able to do this. Starks hasn't been able to.

Even though they weren't great the defense did only give up 13 points. So that is a step in the right direction.

I'm sorry. I don't buy that @IF

A run play is a simple run play. Draw, run left, run right, or counter....what else?

If it's a pass -- Rodgers points out a player to block or directs a player (in the backfield) to do this or that quite often. I mean, let's be honest, the player coming out of the backfield is rarely in the Top 3 reads anyway. Hell, we still have communication issues with vet. I say let the guy play. Especially if the RBs ahead of him aren't playing any better.

Projecting Adams' stats over 16 games:

125 targets, 84 recs, (67.2% catch rate), 1129 yards, 13.38 yd average (as a note Adams' yards/reception average has been trending up).

I'd have to be pretty stubborn not to respect those numbers.

They need more Michael and Montgomery and less Starks... He leaves way to many yards on the field.

Montgomery didn't play a lot. I didn't see the snap counts, but Starks was on the field mostly.

I groaned so loud on that screen pass. Abysmal. At least he made up for it by getting the first down on the next play.

Perfectly executed play except for one important piece - the RB. Should have been a big gainer.

- pass rush! Welcome back
- clay should stay at middle linebacker for the rest of the season
- Michael needs more carries
- Randall played pretty well tonight for his first game back.
- Julius peppers sighting!
- Janis is usually due for about one stupid penalty a game on special teams. The guy drives me nuts.
- pray for the hamstring!
- finally a win! We needed this badly. Any way we could get it. Nice to see us running down the clock for once.

A-rod was in total control. I liked what I saw in Adams tonight. I really expected more of this from him. First big catch over the middle. Small stuff then long. Great Game plan by MM. Loved the safety play tonight. Nelson and Rip were very impressive too.

My favorite highlights. Great catch by Adams, best throw and catch of season! Ripkowski runs, especially when team was backed up and of course TD. Can't remember when we last had a tough rushing td.

And Rodgers passing being accurate all game long.

Still want to see some staff changes and new GM.

Glad I was wrong about tonight! There is no such thing as a bad win on the road. Perhaps Jake Ryan is back next week, that should help?

Please, please McCarthy continue to run *this* offense. The deep stuff you want will open up if you do. Please, please.

I was about to type up the same thing. If this is how MM is going to call an offense, then I'm happy for him to stay around. The defensive coaches I'm not so sure about...

Also, Rodgers has looked really good for several weeks now. That funk may officially be a thing of the past.

The way the offense was run is the story of the game. A lot of quick passes, different looks and timely runs by the QB to keep the chains moving. Then from time-to-time shots down the field. Control the clock and keep your crappy D off the field

Seems so simple. They've done in short spurts earlier this year and it usually works. QB1 ran it so well tonight. Why they abandon it I don't know.

Agreed. But MM still went back to prevent offense in the 4th. Only due to a penalty, it worked tonight. I'm still not confident that MM has learned the lesson. Personally, I wish they stayed more agressive with what was working.

And how many times will MM still call timeout within 2 minutes left to the half. This is where he should NOT be aggressive until the D staightens out.

Still a win on the road.

The unfortunate question remains - do we hope to make the playoffs with no real chance of going far or do we rather get a lower draft pick?

Just get into the playoffs. Who knows what will happen after that. Dallas is the only team in the NFC that has looked really good consistently.

Never ever chalange your luck trying to play like "wise" guy. Every game play by full potential, no matter injuries, bad "luck" or mistakes. Gave everything you have. That is how real champs plays. With no calculation!
So, do not play for better draft picks... And never ever think you do not have possibility for greatness... If you think so, you do not, whatever your draft position was or is. With that type of calculation you are turning yourself to Browns...

First impression: This season is drunk

Second, first impression: I think we witnessed the potential of this IF everyone plays to their full ability, and the coaches don't undermine what works. This was fun to watch. Granted, we caught the Eagles on the downhill of their season, but we still looked great. Some of those quick passes AR put between blitzers were pure precision.

Matthews should stay at ILB for the most part with situational outside rushes. I think the D and Matthews would benefit

I like Mathews at ILB, but I would like him in a hybrid type of role. Don't force him to drop in coverage. Let him rush or spy the QB.

Exactly.

Thats how he was first used at ILB and he was the most effective that way.

Having him drop back into coverage more then a couple of times a game takes away his strength. Which is getting after the QB.

- Lord Rodgers was sharp tonight. Had some help from his receiving corps (for once) and had some beautiful passes.

- Julius Peppers, love him and hate him. Horrible face mask and then incredible sack when the game was over. As the season goes on, I hope he proves me wrong and earns that 10.5 million he is making this season.

- Nice MM decided to actually coach this game. Amazing what happens when you develop a game plan that keeps the defense guessing.

- Throw the ball to Rip more.

- Perry's neutral zone infractions were beyond ridiculous.

- James Starks...................I don't know......

- I take back all the bad things I ever said about Davante Adams, for now.

- Flawless game from the special teams. How long has it been since I could type that?

- Aaron is still doing that whole spin to his right thing too often, but there were a few times in this game he stepped up in the pocket and delivered a dart. Really haven't seen that in awhile.

- Win next week. Keep hope alive.

Defense allowed nothing big over the top, got some pressure and the safeties kept everything in front of them, finally, while Arodge and the offense controlled the ball. Not only that but the special teams was positively quiet tonight. All 3 phases for all 4 quarters! A sigh of relief looking on to a winnable game at home next Sunday!

Did anyone else groan when the MNF announcers kept bringing up the "the Packers haven't lost when leading at the start of the fourth quarter in 28 games" stat? In addition to some other flaws in that stat, it obviously DIDN'T INCLUDE THE PLAYOFFS WHEN OUR HEARTS WERE RIPPED OPEN AND SET ON FIRE.

I'm not still mad about that.......[eyes shift back and forth]

It's not a matter of being 28 games ago, it's a matter of being 28 games where we took a lead into the 4th quarter ago.

And actually, they said that the last time we took a lead into the fourth quarter and lost was in 2013, so the span definitely went through the 2014 playoffs.

-Excited about Spriggs- he can only get better. Barclay, take a seat.
-Starks will never be any more than we see, serviceable.
-Hope AR and CM3 will be ok.
-Stupid penalties on Janis, Perry and Peppers.
-Thanks Coach Pedersen for the head-scratching challenge!
-Not sure what lit a fire under DaVantae (loved those crisp routes), but I hope that is a sign of better things to come!
-Would be quite a feat to run the table, but it now has to be job-one.
-At the end of the day, a win is a win.

Wonderful game plan by MM, marred only by the bone-headed timeout followed by a punt.

Defense was better. GB offense did control the ball for 35+ minutes, and Philly only got 7 drives, but still.

Capers doesn't look like an idiot when he has 2 reasonably decent CBs and some chess pieces to move around. OTOH, the middle was wide open too much; Philly TE Matthews was killing us until he got injured.

AR was hot. On Adams' second TD, he wasn't really open (except on a fade over Adams' left shoulder, but I give Adams a lot of credit for concentration. The CB could have accidentally had a PD, and had he seen the pass coming, the CB had a better chance of catching the pass than Adams did.

Adams broke the ankles of the opposing CB a couple of times tonight. Some really sharp cuts coming out of his break tonight.

Cook - looks like you have to take the good with the bad. Couple of nice run blocks, one reception, bad hands again.

Guys,
I'm thrilled for the W, yes MM finally run the offense in a way that we always thought would work, but having seen the chiefs Vs. broncos I couldn't stop thinking, watching our D, that none of our players would start in either one of those D's.
I would make my top priority for next year's draft/free agency:
-DL, DE, LB, SS, CB
-speedy WR

We're wasting another future hall of famer at QB with such mediocre talent at D.
Cheers
