Packers Stock Report: Day-by-day edition

Sunday was a good day. Check that, Sunday was a great day.

I got to watch the Packers with my wife and two children. It was 4-month-old Baby Reggie’s first Packers game (yep, that's Reggie in the picture. He gets his cuteness from his mother), and he got to see the Packers win in a nail-biter. Almost 3-year-old Big Brother Edward even awoke from his nap just in time to give the Packers a motivational “Go Pack Go!” on the game’s decisive final drive.

Watching the Packers with my family has always been a big deal, but it was an even bigger deal on Sunday. I had a massive surgery in New York to remove all visible cancer from my body on July 29. In addition to the cancer, the surgeons also removed 70 percent of my colon, my spleen, appendix, gall bladder, a sliver of my liver (that’d be a catchy song title) and some of my bladder.

After that was all done, I had chemotherapy pumped directly into my abdomen through a port for three consecutive days. That port remained in my abdomen and became infected, which has landed me in the hospital twice over the last two weeks. This is in addition to all the other challenges and complications that make recovery from this surgery so challenging.

I’m trying to abide by the old cliché and take things day by day as I continue to work at finally turning the corner in my recovery. On Sunday, that meant watching the Packers with my family. And it made me happy. Very happy.

But enough about me and my various ailments. Let’s get to the Packers Stock Report:

Rising

Aaron Rodgers
It wasn’t the best – or most consistent – game for Rodgers, but how can you leave him off the rising list after that throw he made to Davante Adams at the end of the first half? Unbelievable.

Damarious Randall
Randall showed no signs of a sophomore slump on Sunday. Whenever Blake Bortles threw to Randall’s receiver, the second-year corner was there to contest the pass. On the game’s decisive final play, Randall blew up a bubble screen pass and held tight until teammates arrived to finish off the tackle and secure the Packers win.

The only questionable move made by Randall on Sunday was his decision to wear long sleeves in the 100-degree heat.

Clay Matthews
I liked that the Packers didn’t use Matthews exclusively outside. Yes, rushing from the edge was his primary duty, but Dom Capers still moved Matthews around enough to take advantage of his playmaking skills. Matthews’ versatility, and Capers willingness to move him around every now and then, resulted in several impactful plays from the Jeff Hanneman look-a-like.

Steady

Sam Shields
Damn. Another concussion for Shields, the fourth of his career. Here’s hoping he bounces back and he doesn’t suffer and short- or long-term effects.

Morgan Burnett
Yeah, Burnett had a bad holding penalty that enabled the Jags to extend the game’s final drive, but I was really impressed with No. 42’s energy and explosiveness. I thought he brought a lot of heat when he lined up closer to the line of scrimmage like a hybrid linebacker and flew around the secondary in the passing game. I’m looking forward to how the experiment of using Burnett in a variety of ways evolves.

Falling

Quinten Rollins
Don’t worry, young fella. Many Packers players who are now stars have ended up in the falling category at some point in their careers. You’ll bounce back and become the playmaker many think you can be.

Packers communication
Unlike Rollins, Mike McCarthy Rodgers and the offense don’t have the excuse of youth to explain away their communication issues on Sunday. What the heck was that on Green Bay’s final drive? Back-to-back time outs? An audible to a run where the entire offensive line was pass-blocking. Yuck. Ick. Bleh.

Adam, continue to pray for 100% recovery!
I loved Perry's game on Sunday, but not so much for Burnett. Also reviewed the game and Cook had a lot of open looks. Expect Rodgers to start looking at that for future games.

Keep it up bro. Thoughts and prayers for you and yours. I like the article but two questions...is Randall playing better than Shields right now (if sam were able that is). And does Randall have the world's smallest arms or something ? It's like he's scared to go sleeveless...

Wow. Just wow. Stay strong.

Glad you enjoyed the game.

I think Taylor has to at least be in the steady category. A lot of pressure for a guy on the road taking over for a Pro Bowler. No major issues.

Mahalo for the health update Adam. You've been thru a lot, remain a very strong person, and here's to your speedy recovery! I appreciate your take on the game. Well stated. Go Pack.

One victory over a subpar team, and the Packers move from number 6, to number one in the power rankings. Somebody apparently thinks that Packers win was pretty impressive. I'll wait to see how they handle the pressure in MN before I start turning cartwheels.

Could it be a bunch of the same sportswriters that rocketed the Badgers to #10 from outside the polls after one win over an overrated LSU team?

At this time of year (if ever), what does it all really mean? In the end, the only ranking that matters is indicated by the Lombardi Trophy.

(in edit) I had a former student (a Lions fan) who was stunk up over this message me and ask, as a Packer fan, whether I realistically thought that the Packers -- after how they played on Sunday -- were really the best team in the league. My response? Who cares?

Wow Adam, just wow. Your positive attitude is something else. Nothing like family. So glad you got to see the game at home and see another Packers win. Hope to see you for many, many years.

When I think of you and then of Kaepernick, there's really no comparison. You're 100x the man he is.

For one game out of one, both Perry and D Jones made me eat it.

Here's hoping that continues. Well played gentlemen. Both are "rising" in my book.

And I'll be right beside you eating my plate for my lack of faith in Joe Thomas' ability. Lol. I have no shame in being wrong.

And I will enjoy watching that. Lol

I have been a favorite of Thomas since last year. He seems to have taken a big step this year. Honestly I could see him have a bigger role on defense if he keeps playing the way he did.

@RC I wouldn't expect anything less, lol.

What I was most impressed with was the hustle plays. Sure, him putting little Denard Robinon on his ass and pretty much handing Matthews that sack was impressive, but that INT and him help gang-tackle on 4th&1 are plays he didn't/couldn't make last season. A few players just half-assed it over to the ball carrier. Luckily, he and Burnett were hustling because the initial tacklers (Randall & Hyde) didn't finish the play.

I thought it was cool of Guion to carry Thomas off the field too. Might be a confidence booster.

lol, all good.

That is exactly what impressed me the most too. The hustle plays. That INT he was blitzing and when he saw the pass thrown he turned and ran to the ball, and was in perfect spot to get it knocked into his arms. Also that 4th and 1 play he was blitzing inside and hustled down the line to help make that play. Though going back and watching that play he essentially helped clean it up because the first hit was by Randall and then Burnett came next then Thomas. But either way from him to be in the middle of the field and get outside to help make that play was impressive.

That was really cool that Guion carried him off the field.

First of all, GO ADAM!!!! Another finely written piece and we get a look at the future writer of "Surviving Sundays" 20 years from now when your retired and ready to let him take over.

Lots about the Defense and I agree so i won't be repetitive. I've had this feeling since Sunday about the offense though...Something just not right BUT I hope it's nothing more than lack of game time together. This week it gets better, despite playing a Defense everybody says is so great even though statistically they were nothing but middle of the road last year. I mean they DID play the Titans, where we at least played a QB who threw for 4400 yards and had the 2nd most TD passes in the NFL. Not to mention the two 1000 yard WR's.

I spell a home wrecking in Minnesota this week!!!

Adam, it's hard to believe what you have endured so far. All the best hopes and prayers for your successful recovery.

As far as the Packers, as long as we have Aaron Rodgers, we have a chance to win any game. nuff said.

Adam, thank you for your courage and determination. You give us the gift of perspective-something so easily lost through everyday trouble.
For me, Nelson's stock is rising. He caught a few balls, took a few hits, and got a TD. That's a start.

watching again... Jake Ryan, Of course Thomas, who looks like he is wearing 18 which is cool, and even Fackrell got around the OT`s edge numerous times. Granted too deep for Bortless... but a very good sign.
