Packers sign CB Rasul Douglas off Cardinals' practice squad

The fifth-year player out of West Virginia University was originally selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round of the 2017 draft.

The Packers announced the signing of cornefrback Rasul Douglas off the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad earlier this afternoon.

Douglas, a 6-foot-2, 209-pound, fifth-year player out of West Virginia University, was originally selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round (No. 99 overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. He played three years for the Eagles (2017-19) and one season for the Carolina Panthers (2020), appearing in 60 games with 29 starts. Douglas has totaled 178 tackles (144 solo), five interceptions and 34 passes defensed as well as two special teams tackles. He has also appeared in six postseason contests with two starts, recording 10 tackles (all solo) and a pass defensed. Last season in Carolina, Douglas appeared in 14 games with a career-high 11 starts, recording a career-best 62 tackles (50), while adding nine passes defensed (No. 2 on the team). In 2021, he spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Houston Texans during the offseason and training camp before spending the first part of the regular season on the Cardinals' practice squad.

Douglas will wear No. 29 for the Packers.

If he had speed and coverage ability he wouldnt be on the practice squad thats for sure because he has the size. Jaire doesnt sound like a three week and were back in business situation.
They obvious know and expect the worst and went our for a second opine and its probably confirms the bad news we all are expecting.

He throws 4 th rounders away like they’re nothing so I guess a 5th was too rich, Gilmore should be a packer, but we’ll just bring up ps scrubs and other castoffs.. Oh wait Kevin queen may be available soon, another gem we’re paying millions to stink..Could’ve got Hayward in the off season instead of queen, there was 5 guys better than him out there easily..

Are you kidding Tommy? Gilmore is 31 coming off an injury, and had an average 2020 (according to Patriots radio today). He is also eating up about $7 million. Patriots announcers said they should have traded him last year. Incompetence from the GM? You mean the GM that got the players for a 13-3 season two years in a row with a rookie coach? The GM that signed Campbell and is signing Jaylon Smith (LB) today? You know nothing. You are incompetent. How about doing some research before making stupid comments?

Jaylon Smith is a pretty good get, here. Arguably better than Gilmore, given the lack of quality depth across the LB positions. Yes, even worse than CB because Gilmore likely wouldn't have been ready to contribute this weekend.

I want to keep an open mind but man our CB group is in big trouble. Yiadom is a special team player and not really a corner. With the Giants last year and against the Bills in the pre season he exhibited Ladarious Gunter like skills. Not good. Kevin King is doing Kevin King like things. Always hurt and when he does play he struggles mightily. Rasul Douglas is out there because he’s not very good. Without Jaire we are placing our hopes on a rookie first round pick and not much else.

I understand what you are saying PackfanNY and this does happen a lot. However, everyone thought the IL Campbell was just a guy as well but look how that turned out.

Sounds like this singing shuts the door on getting Gilmore from the Pats. Never thought it would happen, but read Gilmore wanted to be a Packer but probably at a high price. I have concerns like everyone else about our corner back situation.

Panthers gave a 6th for him.
GB could've offered a 5th, IMO.

What can you expect from one who learnt from another jackass? I have the belief if we had a gm and coaches with have the intelligence and compentences of the great Lombardi, we would have never suffered the 70s 80s and won numerous championships with Farve and Rodgers. Why are some teams more successful than others?Intelligence and compentences

The issue WASN'T what the Packers would give up, the issue was money. There was NO WAY the Packers could have swung that deal with the cap issues they have this year and next.

Sorry friend, I wanted him too but knew it was a fantasy.

It’s not like the team has much of an option this season. The very good players are already signed on other teams and the Packers are not exactly brimming with cap money. My hope is that Grey can coach him up enough to be a fair player when he gets to the field. If I remember correctly he was supposedly a fair CB in zone coverage. I don’t expect to see him in the slot or star position. And he does have good size and a number of starts and interceptions under his belt. He is not starter material but the team does need a backup.

So GB will owe Douglas at least 3 game checks. They can cut him at any time, but have to pay him. If they keep him the rest of the year, he'd get $990K for the year, prorated, or about $757K. So some churn as this reduces the Packers' cap space. The Packers had an open roster spot so no move is necessary - thought they could release someone, I suppose.

Tgr is there not anyone out there that is better than Douglas ? I don’t know the free agents left, but we really dropped the ball on Gilmore if it would’ve taken a fifth round pick to get him.. What am I missing from our gm here ?? This seems pretty incompetent to me..

Gilmore wants money, that's the big thing. I read a few articles but IDK whether Gilmore was willing to play for $7M in 2021. One would think he has a contract and would have to play out his last year on that deal since he was traded and not released, but things sounded pretty bitter.

Douglas played 821 snaps last season for Arizona and got a 60 PFF grade (which is better than King's grade). So why is he on a practice squad in the first place? IDK.

There are a lot of CBs I've heard of out there. Gaines, Captain Munnerlyn, Darqueeze Denard, Sherels, but I don't know anything about them.

The problem is they signed King earlier this year !!!!
Now we have Jaire out, but King can't play because he's not good !!!
I keep saying that if we had signed Sherman earlier in the season we would have been covered now (and Stokes could have had more time to get out)
But maybe I understand little of it.
The only certain thing is that now everything is in the hands of the attack.
Anyway before Yiadom, better Shemar Jean-Charles or try to move Sullivan to CB

Hi Tommy
Pleasure to talk to you.
You know, I wanted Gilmoure at the beginning of the season, but with the salary cap problems I would have opted for Sherman .... but I had King !!
Now, if Douglas plays three games, he and King together, they cost us what Sherman might cost in Tampa if he goes well.
(I think the risk of injury is identical between KK and RS)
However, I am Italian and I believe that I cannot consider myself too competent in this game (although I love it)
I hope that the attack will support us for the whole season even if it will be very difficult

Sounds like Gilmore had salary cap implications to overcome. Just read that we’re signing Smith ( linebacker) just released from Dallas. I like this move and hopefully, Alexander will not need season ending surgery, we’re due for a break with all the injuries. Just remember it’s a long season . If we can get Smith and Alexander back towards the end of the season , we just might be able to get on a roll when it counts and ride it all the way to L A and win it all, Go Pack Go!

This move to acquire Douglas tells me that the Packers expect bad news about Alexander. Hopefully I'm wrong and Douglas is just a stop gap for a few weeks.

King participated as LP today so he is likely return to the field against the Bengals. It's not great but we could by with Stokes and King for a few games hopefully.

Concerning Gilmore I'm thinking that he was too expensive given the Packers cap situation and especially since Gutekunst was probably already working on signing Smith from Dallas. Smith could be a solid partner for Campbell. It would be great to have 2 solid ILBs. At least I'm confident that he will be better than either Burks or Sumner. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

I agree with you Since '61. Gilmoure was too expensive now.
In fact we should have signed Scherman at the beginning of the year in place of King and now we would be fine

Why does the media tease us with rumors that Gilmore was coming to GB, everyone gets excited and Belichek trades him instead of releasing him. They should have reached out to Jamie Collins still very capable LB vet minimum. Typical

The recent personnel moves are a good lesson in why the Packers don't operate in a vacuum. They have a fairly tight salary cap. The Cowpokes are picking up most of Smith's salary for this year. The Packers are likely to bring him in for the vets minimum. So they get an experienced linebacker cheap. Good move, or do you prefer Summers and Burk? What team is going to give up one of their top players just because the Packers have a need?

The Packers couldn't afford Gilmore as much as they need him right away. The Packers would have had to release some players to bring him in overall weakening the team and putting more strain on the salary cap.

The Packers have rebounded and are a contending team but will be pushed by injuries. Don't forget most of this possible championship team is here because of personnel and coaching moves. Gute was key in that.

Gilmore has at least 3 more weeks o the PUP list. He would be expensive and wouldn't contribute for weeks. Hopefully JA will be back in a few weeks. Smith is another good LBer and can play right away. Pressuring the QB will be more important than ever now.

If the goal is making your team better I think these moves are both smash successes.

Let's just say it this way. Who do you want logging crucial snaps in December and January? Ty Summers and Kabian Ento or Rasul Douglas and Jaylon Smith?
