Packers Select Kingsley Enagbare in 2022 NFL Draft - Round 5

Green Bay selected their first edge defender in this draft class

{Kingsley Enagbare, South Carolina, EDGE}

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

Height: 6-0
Weight: 258
40-yd dash: 4.87
Vertical: 36.5
Broad: 9.09
Shuttle: 3.93
3-cone: 3.33

CAREER NOTES:

Enagbare made only one start in 2019 and had a significant presence with 27 tackles, seven for loss with 3.5 sacks. In 2020, he had 30 tackles, seven for loss with a team-high six sacks, and was named first-team all-conference. Enagbare missed the final two games due to a hip injury and had surgery after the season. He was still productive in 12 starts with 44 tackles, seven for loss, with 4.5 sacks and two pass breakups.

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

Enagbare is long and strong but lacks explosiveness, which could create diverging opinions regarding his position and how best to play him. He's heavy-handed and physical but will never be confused for a playmaker on the edge. He's best suited as a cubicle defender where his power and length can benefit him in smaller spaces. He has played heavier in the past and teams might ask him to pack the pounds back on in order to compete as a run-defending interior lineman in an odd or even front.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

The Packers needed edge depth and get that with Kingsley Enagbare, a developmental player who was considered a second or third-round prospect by most draft analysts. He has the ceiling to be a third option behind Rashan Gary and Preston Smith.

COMMENTARY:

Enagbare is a great value by Brian Gutekunst, who traded back from 171, added another seventh-round pick and drafted a player who could have been selected much earlier. He can be a depth piece right away, with potential to be a future starter.

Lists at 6-4 rather than 6-0.

Good value pick at the end of round 5 and addresses a need. Great length. Might be the best of the remaining edge players.

Didn't Joe Barry say "you should always have at least one guy named Kingsley on the roster?" Or am I thinking of Pettine?

No, that was Enagbare's mom about 2 picks before the Packers took him.

Fit with GB:

Enagbare is a questionable fit for the Packers for a number of reasons. He’s probably not big enough to play 4i in Joe Barry’s scheme, and he’s probably not twitchy enough to pass rush for Jason Rebrovich, either. He’s a very good football player, it’s just hard to see where he might fit in in Green Bay. It’s much more likely the Packers opt for one of the more “toolsy” prospects in the pass rush department.

Positional Skills:

Enagbare is extremely efficient and technically sound coming off the line of scrimmage. With few false or wasted steps, Enagbare achieves above-average get-off with average to below-average athleticism. His flexibility is fine, but certainly nothing to write home about. Where he succeeds mightily is the ability to convert speed to power and work off of counter rush moves when that initial push doesn’t seal the deal. Enagbare is a more versatile defensive weapon than he is just a true EDGE He’s played effective football up and down the defensive line.

Some suggest that he gain weight to play 5 technique.

Draftscout has him with a 7.51 three cone, 34 and 6/8ths arms, 258 pounds, and a 4.54 20 yard shuttle.

He’s not been good against the run as I understand it, though he’s a good tackler. We will just have to see what they see him as and how he performs. I don’t have a clear vision for role and hence fit. He seems to have divided scouts too.

That's the question--do you beef him up and ask him to be a 5-T, inside rusher, or do you slim him back down and ask him to play OLB?

If you're a 5 tech you're lining up on the -outside- shoulder of the tackle, and at 270 lbs, he's the appropriate weight to play OLB in a 3-4.

I don't know about this guy. I'm not familiar with him, but his tape makes him look like a plodder. I see all the TFLs and he's got himself some sacks, but he looks like he'd be a hold-the-edge type player at the next level as opposed to a penetrator/disruptor type to my eyes.

Doesn't look quick, mobile, or skilled to me. Looks like a guy who's strong and has long arms who can keep a OL's hands off of his jersey until the ball carrier gets within his long arm's reach. If he could gain even more weight and get to 305-ish lbs, he might even make a very good 3-4 DE.

I like a lot about this draft and while you cannot get everything you want in one draft both Edge and TE is lacking. I'm hoping him the best and that he is able to adequately fill the void we have at Edge. A good 3rd Edge rusher will go a long way solidifying our improving defense.

Seems like they are still fixated on getting run stoppers and this guy should play in the middle in the NFL. How the f does Gutt find these guys. WTF is going on.
I know they hate true edge rushers because those guys want to be paid in real dollars. If you can call him anything but that his pay get reduced big time.

Not impressed. He will do nothing to improve the pass rush and he wasnt a pass rushed in college. Key word on this guy, lack of speed, lack of explosiveness. wow that sounds promissing.

Carpenter’s 6-4 225 4.51. Wow!!!

HUSTLE RANGER! Stays on back line of red zone and makes QBs pay for throwing. Sound run stop. Freaking beautiful.

Good value at the end of the 5th round. He no doubt is a developmental player. He did have good production in the SEC so he’s not afraid of the bright lights. This will be a challenge for the coaching staff to coach him up and get the most out of a player. He needs to be ready when injuries strike.

ESPN has him listed at 6'4". I was hoping they would go with Amare Barno whose 6'5" with a 4.36 40 yd dash but oh well. Enagbare's production isn't bad and he was projected to go much higher. Hopefully he's a steal.

AWESOMENESS. PICK # 179.

Gutekunst is a savant. Been making some very good picks, addressing nearly every urgent need on this Packers team. Great work by he & his staff. All draft.

Could be one of the biggest steals of the draft, as he was graded out MUCH higher in many scouting reports. He'll be a player to watch for sure. Raw in some areas, but apparently is very coachable.

Gutey can now take the top off the UDFA class with prospects offering ST value...WRs, CBs, a few safeties still on the board.

Get your top UDFA targets under contract and keep them away from other teams competing for them.

This may be one of the most talented UDFAs classes in a while due to covid and guys playing another year they wouldn't have in years past.

I think Carpenter is a nice upgrade over the departed Burks. Both converted Safeties but Carpenter, unlike Burks, will come in to play STs #1, backup LB, Hybrid, or S #2.

Bisaccia is getting the Cavalry riding to his STs. Walker, Watson, Doubs, Enagbare, Carpenter. Some good athletes!

I hope he pans out. He sure likes to celebrate after a play.

I have to put my trust in Gute and the scouts. The only player I recall seeing and remembering is Wyatt from watching the NCAA playoffs. I watched most of the Badgers games and a variety of other teams throughout the season, but the only first hand knowledge I have is watching some of the quarterbacks, running backs, and a few receivers; I am in the dark on most of the players being drafted. The only knowledge I have is what we are all inundated with regarding the numerous mock draft and simulations we do leading up to today. I am sure anxious to see these new draftees put on the pads this summer.

I don't know anything about this young man, and based purely on highlight reels, I'm not seeing an NFL pass rusher. I just don't see it. He's a run defender. That's okay.

His length is evident, but he doesn't look athletic to me.. I don't think RB's are going to be able to get past this guy very easily, though. He looks like he disengages from blocks and plays the run very well.

Maybe if he builds lower body strength he could become a bull-rush type rusher. With those long arms and better leg drive I could see him having the potential to walk back a tackle and get a hold of QB's jerseys.

He was 2nd in the country in pass rush win/loss rate at over 16% in the STACKED SEC which had several tackles drafted in the 1st round.

His question marks are actually...just the opposite, vs the run than as a pass rusher, but it sounds like you don't "see" much of an athlete because you looked at his 40 time maybe?

Because he was certainly productive at USC.

Been thinking a lot about Kingsley “JJ” Enagbare lately. A lot of great comments in here on him. Was reading some of Bill Huber’s thoughts on JJ, and he made a great point. Enagbare dropped like a hot rock because his Combine 40 was bad, and his Pro Day 40 was even worse.

He went onto say, JJ isn’t going to be running 40 yards. Where he makes his hay is in his early speed & burst, coupled with immense power. All he needs to to clock in well in his fast brutally 5-10 yd times and he’s set.

I do agree with many here - and Huber alluded to this - that he brings similar versatility to the Packers EDGE group that we saw with Z, and we now see with Gary.

He ranked #4 amongst the EDGE class in this draft with 16 QB Hits. That’s plenty of twitch and explosion for a 6-4 271 player. I can easily see him coming in and working multiple positions, including the 5-Tech… JJ is great attacking the B Gap.

His strength & power as a pass rusher deliver in his bull & club moves, and has great length to rip - but in run stop, that same strength is best seen in his standing up of blockers, shutting down running lanes, forcing RBs into the waiting arms of teammates when forced to redirect.

He’s just never going to be your chase EDGE. But, he is patient & disciplined in run stop, able to hold the edge. He just might have more to offer in our whole run stop package than people might think.

Enagbare filled up the stat sheet: 121 Tackles 24 TFL 15 SACKS 4 PD 3 FF - those numbers point to solid tackling ability and huge hustle.

Back to Huber’s point: Enagbare’s 5-10 yd time - that quickness and speed to get to and disrupt the QB, is ALL THAT MATTERS…

Enagbare RANKED HIGHER THAN Travon Walker, Aidan Hutchinson, Kayvon Thibodeaux, George Karlaftis and Arnold Ebiketie in PASS RUSH WIN RATE per PFF, at 26%, placing him in the 93rd percentile.

I’m really liking this player who I regard as a PERFECT add, and a steal at Pick #179.

Enagbare, as a rookie, may prove a highly valuable backup to both Rashan Gary & Preston Smith in our quest.

Yes..to all of this. I'm certainly glad the Packers grabbed in spite of the RAS score...which is a great tool, but obviously not the end all.

Davante Adams didn't(or MOST of our best WRers for that matter) didn't have particularly impressive RAS scores.

Bottom line, in the best conference in the NFL, he was an extremely productive player. You're not likely to get a guy who ran a 4.50 40 and had a 9.55 RAS AND was one of the most productive edge rushers in the SEC with the last pick in the 5th round. Those types of guys...well, they're top 5 picks. So he may not be a perfect prospect, but he was pretty close to a perfect pick at #179!
