Packers reportedly releasing LB Kamal Martin

The former 5th round pick was buried on the depth chart this summer.

Probably should have seen this coming when they experimented with him at outside linebacker early in camp, but still, this is a bit of a surprise.

Per ESPN, the Packers are releasing linebacker Kamal Martin:

Martin spent the first six weeks of his rookie season on injured reserve (knee), played in 10 games with six starts, recording 23 tackles (17 solo), three tackles for a loss, a sack, a quarterback hit and a special teams tackle.

I don't understand this. Why cut him now vs. the final cuts? What if there is an injury and he is needed?

Is there more to the story?

If they cut him now, it means they've seen enough and he's not in their plans. If they lose someone to injury, they're not turning to him. They'll find someone else. They drafted a late rounder, they brought in a free agent and they've got Burks and Barnes. And they may often only have one ILB on the field at a time, with hybrid safeties playing a backer role.

Wow, he showed so much promise last year. This is very surprising.

I think its his knee. He was injured in college and last year had knee surgery in September. He had knee injuries in training camp, and looked terrible against the Jets. Packers are smart to move on from him.

Keeping Burks and dumping Martin. That is a head scratcher. More to this then we know.

I think it's mainly his knee which will be three years in a row starting in college. He had knee surgery in September and injured it in training camp.He had a terrible game against the Jets and Packers have seen enough. I also think he didn't fit in Barry's new scheme. They have Campbell and Barnes, and Rivers could make the team.

He looked lost again on Saturday. Not a real big surprise. Supposedly he can't grasp the mental aspects of the game.

Agreed.
There was a reason we brought in Campbell.

Last year they genuinely seemed happy with Martin. This year he’s out the door before final cut down. They seem to have a revolving door at the position. Goodson in, Goodson out. Kirksey in, Kirksey out. Now Martin. They don’t seem to value the position like the fans do I guess? We draft plenty of high pick o lineman but for whatever the reason always a last minute FA or someone who got cut. I assume it’s Barnes and Campbell and don’t ask if someone gets hurt?

Don’t forget Antonio Morrison a few seasons ago too.

Thanks, your right! How could I forget.

All kidding aside, the same story every year. Always a stop gap type player. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Here we go again at this position....A couple of nice prospects were available and waiting in this year's draft, but noooo....

Don't complain about the draft as 6 of 7 will start or contribute: Stokes, Myers, Rodgers, Newman, Slaton, Hill. Packers new scheme may only have one LB on the field at times with safety hybrid players. All positions can't be stacked with all pros.

A bit surprised Martin was released at the second cut - thought he was likely a player that could and would improve his game in the Barry Defense.

Just read that Hollman was traded to the Texans for a 7 th round draft choice - always good to get a draft choice for a player the Pack doesn't have in their plans.

Tough to tell, but he did look lost out there. Players get released when they don't fit the system all the time. Maybe the Packers did Martin a favor releasing him, so he could find a better fit.

He got cut, but Ty Summers is still on the team? Summers had no idea what was going on again the Jets!

Martin has had knee injuries for the last 3 years starting in college and surgery in September. He missed some training camp with another knee injury, and was slow and lost against the Jets. Good move to spin again.

The jets game was a poor example. Absolutely everyone looked slow and lost against the jets. Tight ends and receivers were roaming free by 5-10 yards for most of the first half. Anyway, I really hope Burks has stepped his game up because it looks like a three way battle between Barnes Burks and Campbell.
