Packers release WR Jawill Davis

-- The Green Bay Packers released undrafted wide receiver Jawill Davis, the team announced Saturday.

Davis, who was claimed off of waivers by the Packers from the New York Giants in May, was entering his second season in the league buried at the bottom of the Packers' depth chart at wide receiver.

The Bethune-Cookman product played just seven snaps on offense in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Houston Texans, not seeing a single target in the passing game. He did, however, get an opportunity to flash his potential as a return man, returning one kickoff for 24 yards late in the game.

Hopefully they use his roster spot to grab more ILB depth.

That makes 3 open spots now by my count.

One for Spriggs, Donnerson, Jawill Davis.

We may subtract one if Campbell comes of off PUP soon but then will likely add one again for Burks if he goes on IR.

Campbell is taking up a roster spot while he is on PUP. It is called the Active/PUP list during TC, and the Reserve/PUP list during the season.

Should have added these to: #88 Teo Redding , #86 Malik Taylor, #13 Allen Lazard, #49 Baylis Evan, #84 McKever , #46 Johnson.

Watched start of game and saw #13 basically dominate the Texan's whole right side of their kick off special teams, and I am like who the hell was that? I'd been hearing about this Lazard but never had opportunity to see him in action. Subsequently, I then focused on him throughout the game. Intriguing talent at WR! I am sold on him after one game! How do the Pack not find a spot on the 53 for him. Holy Hanna!

Because there is 8 Wrs in front of him. Taking time away from the final 8 is not going to help them. The roster space is 6Wrs.

8 ahead of him?

If he keeps showing up next couple of games there may be a spot! Think lot of upside!

Much as I like Lazard, I’m not sure he has upside. He is a big receiver with good hands but that is his upside. A slightly bigger less athletic Kumerow, a more slight version of Tonyan and squeezed between the two.

He is a good floor low ceiling possession type. We already have Allison and Kumerow if whom one could say the same, but bring more versatility. We have Graham, Tonyan, Sternberger, MVS as tall catchers.

In addition one of Shepherd or Davis looks like being a the returner. I just can’t see Lazard cracking the 53 despite his ST acumen unless we trade receivers ahead of him or injuries hit.

From a most favorable to Lazard: Adams, MVS, Allison, EQ, Kumerow, Shepherd and Davis are ahead at this point. Even if one says Shepherd or Davis, that’s still 6 WRs. EQ, Kumerow, Shepherd and Davis have all been on the first return unit consistently and I am not sure that they will keep more than 6.

I'm guessing 5 this year (or 6 including a WR who is primarily a returner), but that's irrelevant. You practice every player in camp, give everyone time in PS to shine, and churn the bottom of your roster as much as you can, because injuries can strike the top of the roster at any time, and every year you have a few guys that come out of nowhere and can become impact players.

The roster isn't set till it's set, and if someone better comes along nobody (except maybe Adams) has a guaranteed spot going into this season.

Agree that Lazard, at 6’5”, showing some impressive skills out there as a receiver and on ST... he’s going to play in the NFL for somebody with his present talent and potential. Can see him being a very productive receiver.

Bears just had an injury to a top receiver. They could use and will pick up Lazard I think.

Lots of receiver-needy teams. Maybe pick up some 5th-7th’s. BTW, Packers receivers are performing with Kizer and Boyle, so can’t say Rodgers is making them look better than they really are.
